Constant electical buzzing noise when off. Normal?

I have a W520 that makes a soft electrical buzzing hum, kind of like a florescent light bulb.  It does this only when I turn off the machine, and the hum changes pitch every 2 seconds, but it is constant.  The only way to get it to stop humming is if I turn on the machine, or remove and reinstall the battery.
The computer is new.  I bought it direct from Lenovo and just received it on 7/14/11.  It has been making this noice since I got it, but because this is my very first laptop, I don't know if the noise is normal.
I called Lenovo tech support and upgraded my drivers as advised, but this hasn't solved the problem, so I was told to call Post Sales Department on Monday to see if I can get a replacement W520.
Has anyone ever experienced this with their W520?  Is this electrical humming noise normal?  I have confirmed that it is not a fan noise, or a hard drive noise. There is no movement or vibration in the machine, it just likes to hum all the time when it's supposed to be off.  Our IT guy at work thinks it may have a bad connection somewhere that is causing capacitor noise.
My W520 is a model 4270.  Core i7-2720QM, Quadro 1000M, 8 GB SDRAM/500 GB HDD, running Windows 7.
Thanks.

Thanks.  I got a return authorization and shipped the computer back to Lenovo today.  The post sales dept is going to give me a refund when they get the computer, and once I get the refund, I'll have to order a new W520.
Hopefully, the new W520 will not have the buzzing noise problem.
I'm really glad that the post sales dept allowed me to return the computer instead of having me send it to a depot for repairs.  I wish they could have just exchanged it for a new one, but because it's over 21 days from the order date, they have to give me a refund instead.

  • New imac and a buzzing noise - is it normal because it's irritating?

    Hello peeps,
I got my new imac delivered today. Most things are fab, but I'm a bit disappointed with a buzzing noise that only happens when I reduce the brightness of the screen using the slider in the display icon under system preferences. If I keep it at optimum brightness the buzzing doesn't happen. Is there any way of darkening the screen another way?
I'm finding it big and too bright initially as I'm not used to a 24" screen. Is this something that happens or should I send it back?
Anyone care to try theirs and see for me? I would really appreciate this as it's really bothering me and I don't want to complain if I don't have to.

Try using: Shades from Charcoal Design be sure to download the "Intel" version. Shades gives you brightness control all the way down to a black screen, great for working in a dimmly lit room.

It's only my opinion, but I find that text images stay sharper at the lower levels using Shades!

  • Static noises when calling normal?

i have been experiencing static noises when making phone calls. im the only one who can hear them and not the person im calling.(already confirmed myself.) is the at&t service or is the iphone defected. i hear the static through the normal earpiece at the top(not headset) and in speaker mode. thanks.

    Hi all,
Mine does it too. Has nothing to do whatsoever with at&t. None of my other phones do this.
I have a hiss sound I can hear in my earpiece that kind of overlays each word I speak.
I have posted 2 other threads here and only Allan Sampson has responded and understood what I was describing.
The information I have gathered online points to the fact that all NON 3 G phones have a poor sound quality compared to a 3G phone of any make.
Or maybe some of us just have bad ear piece speakers. If so chalk this iPhone up as bad returned iPhone #5.

  • Odd buzzing noise when on BOTH AC & Battery

My PowerBook has a strange "buzz" that sounds like white noise (or crickets, like my old G5 used to) when it is plugged into the adapter AND with the battery in. When the notebook is on just battery or just AC power, there is no noise.
    What is my problem?

Hi, I had the same problem, at least symptoms. Changing energy usage to low worked fine, but I use graphic intensive software so I need the high performance output. I posted the below information on a separate article as well, but I wanted to share it in case anyone has the same problem and wants a possible better fix.
    --- previously posted---
I recently had a loud screeching buzzing noise, not the very faint hard drive or fan sound, but a loud annoying sound. After searching hours online, I found an answer for the problem. (in my case at least)
If you have any speakers plugged into the same energy source (i.e. powerstrip), that may be the problem. I unplugged a set of Sony speakers I had running along the same chain of AC powerstrip outlets, and the noise was gone. The article I found was here: (look for the post by "ST" about midway down this page:

  • Buzzing noise when iPhone 4s vibrates

My new 4s buzzes loudly when the unit vibrates.  It is not the sim slot or door as the noise exists with the sim and door out of the phone. The buzzing is almost as loud as an audible tone and quite annoying and distracting.  Anyone else with this issue?

I have the same problem. Even holding my finger on the bottom right corner eliminates the buzzing noise. I think that the screen could be slightly loose.
I don't mind this when it's in my pocket, but the alarm gives me a bit of a shock in the mornings now.
And I don't really want to exchange the phone, because it's perfect otherwise. I definitely don't want to end up with a faulty screen some of the people here are reporting.

  • Macbook pro making buzzing noises when using google chrome

I have had a Macbook Pro for at least 3 years. I have always used Google Chrome(in fact as I am writing this it began making this noise while using Safari) to use Google Drive to work on my homework to do other things as well since I find it easiest to use for school. Recently my computer has started making a very loud buzzing noise near the fan areas when I use Google Chrome and it worries me. It had that problem before, but when I took it in before I thought the problem had been fixed. Now 2 years later it is making that noise again and it only goes away when I put my computer to sleep. I am unsure as to what to do about it and it worries me because it is getting to the point where I can't even use my computer to work on it.
Please help or give some advice on what to do.

Open the bottom and use a can of compressed air and clean out your fan for dust and possible plastics stuck near fan blade. It will help and if needed replace fan           https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu6tKVqdgGI

  • Buzzing noise when fast forwarding live tv

After pausing live tv, then fast forwarding, it's started to make a buzzing noise whilst forwarding then stops when playing.  It doesn't do it when rewinding.
    Anyone else experienced this?

Yes I've been getting this since the new update. Buzzing whenever FF or RW on demand, recordings etc, even sometimes when changing between adds on 4oD. It sounds like something to do with the hard disk. I've just put it down to an ageing box reaching the end of its life, sad really but I suppose 2yrs is what we should expect from these types of products.
    How old is your box?

  • Loud buzzing noise when I play music and watch videos. Happens through speakers and headphones

Hey guys would really appreciate your help.
I bought a HP laptop in January which started to make buzzing sounds when playing audio from iTunes and YouTube as well. I thought the laptop was faulty so I returned it.
I then got an exchange and instead got a hp-15-d051sa and it does the same thing! I have looked everywhere on these forums to resolve this issue and one source said to uninstall the HP assistant but my laptop is still doing it. It happens on both my speakers and headphones.
Any help will be much appreciated because this has happened on two brand new HP laptops so I'm sure this is happening to other people as well.
    Regards,
    N

Same with me nothing has changed. However what reduces it for me is if you change your battery settings to high performance. But it still does it, you will just find it will do it less.

  • Horrendous buzzing noise when renting some movies on ATV2

    Hi,
I have now experienced for a second time a rather annoying and loud buzzing audio output from ATV2 when I start to watch a movie. It doesn't stop even if I move forward in the movie. If I come out of the movie and listen to anything else through ATV2 then the audio is fine.
I am listening via the optical Toslink out to a speaker system (B&W Zeppelin). Music is fine, internet radio is fine, other video is fine and other rented movies from Apple are fine! Only this film (Pandorum in HD) is doing this. The last time I experienced this it was exactly the same symptoms when trying to watch Downfall.
I have tried unplugging the replugging the Toslink at both ends and resetting the ATV2 (even a full powercycle) and nothing changes.
Newflash: I have turned on my TV speakers (they are normally permanently turned off in software) so the sound is going over the HDMI cable to the speakers and there is no distortion at all... It would appear the ATV2 is having issues with outputting certain audio files over the Toslink. It would not surprise me if this is associated to the encryption that is used by Apple to stop illegal copying. A similar condition is still causing me problems with the video out to my TV (the dreaded inverted colours issue on ATV2).
Anyone got any thoughts on the audio issue?
Anyone experiencing something similar? The audio does sound scrambled now I think of it.
    Cheers,
    Rich

I have the same issue. Sometimes restarting my MacBook Air2,4 helps. iOS devices and Apple TV play together quite nicely. But I'm deeply disappointed with how Apple TV and OSX play together. It's just very disappointing.

  • HT1338 buzzing noise when i adjust my brightness?

Is there an easy solution to fix the noise from my brightness adjustment?

    Hello TommyJon,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you enjoy your stay!
I understand that a buzzing sound is produced when the "W" key is pressed. This is normally a hardware failure, and I would contact HP support for assistance.
You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide

  • Nasty Buzzing Noise when using external charger

I've got a travel charger made by iWantit (iPod & Nano compatible) that I've always used to charge my nano when out and about. When I connected my Touch to it the screen showed a flashing charging icon in the top right and the Touch started buzzing erratically as if it wasn't happy. I should add that I'd had a low battery warning message just before doing this (less than 20% I think it said). My question is can I safely use this travel charger to charge the touch or does it have different specs to the other ipods for charging?

I suppose what I really need to know is whether charges have damaged any ipods. Maybe I should film it for YouTube so everyone can assess the threat level for themselves.

  • Trying to make or receive a phone call and there is constant background buzzing noise?

Trying to make or receive a call and there is constant buzzing sound in background.
    I reset the phone.
I updated network setting on Verizon.
I can play music with no trouble.
    Speaker mode works on phone.

Did you use the latest backup after setting it up "as new device"? If yes, try again, this time without using the backup, maybe it contains damaged data causing your problem.
If this does not bring any change, you should get it serviced.

  • Buzzing noise when connected

When I connect my touch to my computer (this happens with Mac and PC), there is a very short buzzing sound that last just a split second that comes from the device. I'm fairly certain it wasn't doing that when I first got it. I can't tell if it's from the internal speaker or something mechanical. Since the touch has a flash drive I assumed there would not be any moving parts.
Is this happening with anyone else's?
Should I be worried about it?
    Thanks.

Are you sure its the Touch speaker? With my iPhone the wifi makes various sounds that bleed onto my computer speakers. And sometimes I thinks its the iPhone.

  • Fan buzzing noise

Hello, my 13 inch late 2011 (Lion 10.7.5) MBP has started to make a buzzing noise when the fan is running. Its sort of a low E and a constant buzz, no static, so I dont think it has to be cleaned. When the fan gets louder and faster it drowns out the buzzing, so that also makes me worried.
Oh, and if needed, I downloaded a Fan Control pref pane in January.
I also just deleted some junk and cleaned up my computer.
    Thanks,
    Narmo
