Constant Email password corruption in System Prefs in locked  PP/ E panel

My Internet Connection keeps going off. Frequent calls to the Help Desk have led to the same conclusion--my email password--the one that is entered in the PPofE panel that I keep locked within System Preferences--keeps getting corrupted.
This happens each time I reboot, and, sporatically--several times each week--either when I am working or when the machine is on, but I am away from it .
I am at a loss to understand this because the panel is locked and I have to enter my machine password each time I re-enter my email password to get things started up again.
Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks.

Hi Susan,
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

If that doesn't work...
Drag this file to the desktop and reboot...

  • Constant email password request

I was told by apple support that the email server bandwith whether it is attnt (mine) or another is the problem. it is not the mail set up. if you select the cancel button your mail eventualoy shows up. Has anyone the same issue. It is constantly annoying all day and all night long. So I must think it is also a mail problem, as I never had this issue on my windows outlook....

Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
Note, however, that Mail often doesn’t correctly report what the problem really is. If Mail can connect to the server but cannot log into your mail account for some reason, it’ll ask for your password regardless of whether that’s really the problem or not. Don’t keep entering the password every time, because that’s not the problem (click Cancel instead, and take the account back online afterwards).
Some ISPs refuse connection attempts if they are too frequent, for example, or limit the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed from the same IP address, or there may be too many messages on the server and Mail times out before the server responds, or there might be a problem with the network, or there might be a problem with the server...
Do you access this account from more than one computer or some other way (e.g. webmail) while Mail is checking for mail?
What’s the time interval chosen in Mail > Preferences > General > Check for New Mail? If it’s set to Every minute, try changing it to Every 5 minutes.
If this is a POP account, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Remove copy from server settings?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible (i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.), and see whether that makes a difference.

  • Error entering administrator name & password to make System Prefs changes

I have been running Leopard with just fine but encountered this new problem today. I wanted to create a "Guest" account, but when I clicked on the lock in the System Preferences: Users screen to add that option, I typde in my administrator name & password and got this error:
"Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password. Please try again."
It accepts my password when logging in, for keychain access, etc... But I'm not able to unlock & make changes with the same username & password. I tried logging in to make the changes in System Preferences under another user who is also an admin, but I got the same error message using that user's name & password.
This is a new problem for me. I unlocked & added a user account for my kids with no problems just last week and haven't made any changes to my password or account name since then.
Any thoughts on how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

I'm having a similar problem, since the 10.5.1 upgrade (I downloaded the 110MB version, as Apple readily admits that there are problems when using Software Update for upgrades).
I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my boot drive, and it prompted me for my administrator password (something that I've only had to do since the upgrade to 10.5). This time, the user name was blank (usually it fills in the user name with the account name I'm logged in under). I entered the information, and got the error. Double checked everything, and still no luck. After a third attempt, I was told I had to wait a while before trying again.
I'm hoping there's some simple fix or something I can easily to type in. I don't want to wait a few more weeks for Apple to release another patch, and I don't want to have to step back to an even more unstable version so I can use Disk Utility.

I'm not sure about the status of that bug in 2.2.5, but it has been
resolved in our internal 2.3 builds.
I think that you can work around this problem by enumerating your
persistent types in system.prefs instead of in the data store. See our
documentation for more information on how to do this.
Basically, if I recall correctly, the problem is when retrieving the
list, but not when connecting to the data store for other purposes.

  • Access to non-apple system prefs

We are in a corporate environment. When setting up new Macs we turn off access to the System Preferences using the Accounts Control Panel. We want to prevent users from changing Network settings, Sharing options, etc. that we setup up for our company.
The problem with this is when we install software for third-party products such as mice or graphics tablets. Many of these items install Control Panels that are accessed only through the System Preferences, but a non-admin user cannot go in and change the individual settings for these devices without having full admin rights to the System Preferences.
Are there any workarounds for being able to control which Control Panels users have access to when using System Preferences?
    Thanks for any help!

If your users are non-admins, they shouldn't be able
to change the Sharing or Network prefs unless they
enter an admin password. When setting up the new
accounts, go into those prefs and ensure the little
    padlock icon is locked.
Apparently this has improved over earlier versions of OS X when I wasn't looking. When we intially loaded OS X I remember turning on the access to System Prefs and locking the various control panels for the non-admin users, but I recall that some of them didn't stay locked. That's why we started turning off access to them completly. After that initial install of our desktop Macs I never tried this again. We've updated the OS a couple times, but never went in and tried this again because everything was working fine. But when I went to setup some new laptops with wireless mice that had their own control panels this became an issue and that's why I was looking for the workaround. It would be nice if Apple gave you a way in System Preferences to turn on/off access to the individual CPs without having to muck with system like this. But this will work for now.

  • Cannot change user passwords in System Prefs

They just don't "take." I can change passwords as root in terminal using passwd no problem but not in System Prefs pane.
The secure.log hints that something happens:
Apr 20 19:08:01 Dualie com.apple.SecurityServer: Succeeded authorizing right system.preferences by process /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Resources/writeconfig for authorization created by /Applications/System Preferences.app.
But then I try to use that password and:
Apr 20 19:10:03 Dualie SecurityAgent[1846]: User Authenticated: continue login process
Apr 20 19:10:03 Dualie com.apple.SecurityServer: authinternal failed to authenticate user lucy.

I had a similar problem ---- The initial problem was that my AirPort network password wouldn’t stay set and when I attempted to change the settings in the Network pane, I got a dialog box which said: “Please enter your keychain password --- System Preferences wants to use keychain ‘System.’ “ I opened “Details” and it showed Keychain: System Keychain and Application: System Preferences. I thought I had corrupted my keychain and first created a new keychain per the Mac Help instructions. This did not correct the problem and I made a screen shot *using Snapz Pro) to send to Apple or MacFixIt; I noticed that the title bar said SecurityAgentScreen which was the first time i heard of SecurityAgent --- and there is not much in the way of documentation on it.
My next attempt was to rebuild my System which did not fix the problem, so I called apple Technical Support. I was directed to move the Keychain folder from my Home directory (Home/Library/Keychains) to the Desktop and reboot. This corrected the problem, however, there is suspicious difference: the new Keychains folder contains only “login.keychain.” I surmise that the keychains are now invisible and encrypted, and, are accessed via SecurityAgent which was introduced in 10.4.1 ,SecurityAgent was most probably developed to correct keychain vulnerabilities, but.I have not been find any documentation, or at least any that I can comprehend.

I have not been able to sync my mail with iCloud on my MacBookPro (Lion OS).  Everything else has been syncing fine for the past two months, but when I go to System Pref/iCloud/and try to check Mail, it asks me to choose an iCloud email address. When I put in my regular @me.com email, it says that address already exists (of course it does - it's mine!) and wants me to choose another one.  But I want it to sync with my stuff.  What can I do?  I haven't been able to find help anywhere online...  Thanks!

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

Hello, all my emails in Mail, Thunderbird, Postbox show the same date 05.01.2013 which is the example in System Prefs.

  • .mac system pref gives wrong password

I saw this question in the archives, but it was not answered. I hope someone can help me. I have acquired an iMac and am trying to sync and run Backup. Backup says it is in trial version because I am not a .mac member. Sync says my iDisk is not connected or mounted. However, the iDisk is mounted and I can see all of my data stored on it. I can also sign into .mac online and on my Powerbook. I can run backup on the PB, too. Now
When I access the .mac system prefs, the password automatically fills in with way too many characters. Since these characters are all dots, I do not know what it is putting in. When I go into the keychains or log into my .mac online, it accepts my correct password. I don't know what is going on and how to get the sys. prefs to let me put in the correct password. Now I just checked the prefs on the PB and it is doing the same thing, but it WILL allow me to use sync and Backup. Does anyone know how to get the iMac to recognize my .mac membership?

I have tried and tried, but I am not able to reset anything in iSync on the imac. iSync will not run, saying it cannot access my .mac account. I have 4 macs in my house, including a G3 that cannot even install Tiger (due to no DVD drive), and 3 of them can sync and can do all they should do. The imac is the only one with this problem. It will not recognize that I am a .mac member, thus, will not allow me to sync or set prefs.
If anyone has any more suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them and would like to try them. The only thing different about this imac is that it was formerly owned by someone who had a .mac account. His account is no longer active and I want to make the computer my own. I was able to change the passwords and could change everything except the short name of the home folder. I wonder if this has any connection with my .mac identification problem. My other 3 Macs all have different names, though, so I don't see how that could affect it.

  • Email Password Problems (Password corrupt?)

    Hi there,
I need a mod to have a look at a friends email password for her.
She hasn't been able to receive email for around 10 days via Windows Live Mail on Windows 7.  It suddenly stopped working with no changes made to the settings.
I've logged on remotely and checked all settings, all settings are fine. We have reset the password 3 times now via the instructions on the BT Support Site and via Desktop Help. The password resets successfully but when we enter the new password we still get the same error.
The ports were different when I first logged on to what they are here - http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917/c/346
I have changed them now to reflect the instructions in that link but still no joy, we still receive the same error whatever the settings
Unable to send or receive messages for the Btinternet (xxxxxxxx) account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

I should add that I tried setting up a new IMAP account and the password worked fine that way but we don't really want to have to go through the process of transferring all the old mail stored in the inbox and sent folders etc on the laptop from the POP account to the new IMAP one if we set one up.
Could a mod please check what is happening with the password please and whether it is corrupt somehow?
    Thanks in advance.

If  the password works on webmail and IMAP it is more likely a setting on your Windows Live Mail that is incorrect or her Windows Live Mail account has become corrupted. If the settings do not work you should save all her emails and then delete the account and re-set it up.

  • Apple Desktop pictures do not appear in System Prefs

I tried to change my desktop picture and discovered that there are none of the apple images showing in the system prefs for Desktop & Screen Saver. The folders are there (Apple images, nature, plants, etc) but the folders are empty.
Digging via the finder I found in Library/Desktop Pictures all of the missing files but Prefs does not apparently see them.
The default Aurora was there after 10.5.5 upgrade, then I replaced it with one of my own from the user/Pictures folder which shows in the prefs window. All of those pictures still show in prefs.
    What is wrong?

Conclusion, there is now something about my account that no longer can see the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder. Why is unknown still.
Usually, a bad preference file or incompatible login item is the culprit, although it could also be corrupted data in a user cache.
For the first, you can try moving likely suspects from ~/Library/Preferences to a desktop temp folder, then logging out & back in or restarting to see if the problem is gone. If not replace the old preference from the temp folder to its original location to restore the old preferences. One general way that may help locate suspect pref files is to change the preference in the normal way while ~/Library/Preferences is sorted by date changed -- the file storing the preferences should be very near the top of the list.
You can also run a terminal command that checks the syntax of most preference files. It won't indicate all problems but it is worth a shot. In Terminal type:
    sudo plutil -s ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
followed by pressing the return key. At the password prompt, enter you admin account password & press return again. It won't be echoed to the screen. If you get nothing besides the prompt for the next command, those prefs are syntactically correct. Otherwise, remove the indicated pref file as above & test.
If desired, repeat this for the main system-wide preference folder with this command:
    sudo plutil -s /Library/preferences/*.plist
Note: since your new account has no problems, it is highly unlikely a system preference is the problem.
For login items, check the list in the accounts system preference. Suspect anything that isn't from Apple. You can list them here in a new post if you have any questions about them.
If the problem is a bad user cache, a third party utility like Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner will allow you to "clean" (delete) them. Try this as a last resort, since caches speed up the operation of your Mac & will need to be rebuild by the system, causing one-time delays until this is done.

  • How can I turn OFF my Yahoo email password from Firefox memory. since it was hacked last week.

Some time ago I let Firefox remember my Yahoo email username and password. Last week someone hacked into my Yahoo email account and used my email address list to send out lots of yucky spam to them. I have changed my Yahoo password, but now, just for safety's sake, I want to have that password blank whenever I sign in. How do I toggle the Firefox memory OFF so that it doesn't remember my new Yahoo name and password? I would prefer to log that name and password in myself from now on.

I'm back on Firefox 13.01 and the webmail and Yahoo Home page appear to be sorted.
From another similar problem, I learned that going into Tool/Options - Network Settings, and changing the proxy setting from AutoDetect Proxy to Use System Proxy, or No Proxy gets rid of the password pop-up problem.
I've been using 13.01 for the last 10 minutes or so, with Yahoo as my home page, and I've ended and started FF five or six times, and each time, my it went straight to my homepage without requesting a password. E-mail looks to be working fine as well.
