Constant Kernal Panics
I have a faithful iMac G4 that will now now longer boot up.
Usually my computer is turned on constantly, occasionally every few weeks or so I restart it due to software updates or just because I hadn't done it for a while. All these problems started after I turned the computer off and unplugged it for an hour or so while some electrical work was done in the bathroom (new switch for the shower).
The only other thing different about the machine is that about 4 months back we installed a new dvd burner as my superdrive had given up the ghost. An engineer friend who knows his stuff did it for me (with me watching, wincing as he pried apart my machine, It is my baby after all ) and all went fine.
Now after turning the computer off for a few hours, I'm constantly getting Kernal panics during the boot up process, but in differing places. Sometimes it's while the grey apple is on screen, sometimes when the screen has gone blue just after. Once in a blue moon it actually loads the operating system only to kernal panic a minute or two later.
So I booted into single user (after looking on the web) and ran fsck -f and it said there was a segmentation error, I then ran /sbin/fsck –fy after reading official apple support documents and looking around a bit more and found that this is apparently what your supposed to type (i'm not a command line guy) and it said all was ok. Each time I ran it it said the HD appears to be ok.
So I booted up with the Tiger install dvd and it kept kernal panicing again and again (at this point i'm thinking - **** it it's going to be hardware related) finally the dvd booted and I ran disk utility to verify the disk and it said the HD was ok. I decided to do a repair permissions and then went to the bathroom (I was getting ready for work) only to come back to a kernal panic.
I've reset pram multiple times, I've removed 3rd party RAM I had installed when I got the machine a few years ago. That I thought has fixed it until the next day it started Kernal panicing again.
I ran the extended hardware check and there was no problems, I then ran the quick check and it got an error with text coming down the screen about memory address's (i think, I know I should have paid more attention) and the option to type reboot.
So I did and tried again, this time I did the quick test first, and it passed, then I tried the extended and I got the same error.
So I turned it all off, I booted up fine till it got to the desktop where it kernal paniced again.
Now I did a pram resett during boot and when it gets to the grey apple I get a kernal panic and a screen full of text.
So I booted the tiger install disk and wiped the HD (it was all backed up), Hoping that this would help...
Nope I now have a completly blank HD and an iMac that will not install an operating system.
It's just got to be hardware hasn't it? From things I've read it looks to be a logic board problem, any idea how much this would cost me to fix in the UK?
So anyone have any idea's about what I can do?
Hello,
Those don't sound like Kernel Panics to me. Here are some things to try:
1. Reset the PRAM.
2. Boot from your Tiger Install DVD. From the Menu Bar choose Disk Utility select Macintosh HD on the left hand pane and run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Try booting again.
3. Try holding down the shift key after the start-up chime (or there abouts if you still don't have a chime). This boots the iMac in to safe-mode. Go into Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts and remove all the log-in items. If you've added any fonts recently remove those too.
It's probably best if you start a new thread as this will attract more attention from the real experts.
good luck and let us know how you get on.

Brand new MBP Retina constant kernal panics
I have a new MBP Retina with Mavericks 10.9.4 installed. I have received constant kernal panics since a few days into it. It seemed as though they were being cause by the io/logic boards, but those have both been replaced now. OS has been reinstalled multiple times to no avail. BSD and kernals blamed are all over the place (Dock, WindowsServer, mds; filesystems, AppleSMBusController, IOAcceleratorFamily)
The latest kernal panic is as follows:

I've got many more where that came from. I just don't want to post a wall of text.An update on my situation.
I had my macbook pro replaced with a brand new one by Apple, which was brilliant customer service.
Before giving back the old macbook, I decided to copy all my essential documents over to a usb stick. I also formatted my time machine external drive so it was blank.
Rather than restore this new macbook using my time machine backup, I set it up as a new machine and copied just my documents from my usb stick. I then proceeded to carry out fresh installs of software I regularly use but nothing non-essential (namely Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, xCode, Adobe CS5, Squidman, MAMP and Office 2011).
For three days everything worked beautifully - until last night when I had my first kernel panic on this machine. Nothing was running apart from firefox when this panic occured. The report is below and states the process which was running was 'plugin-container' which is part of firefox.
Below is the log output:

I'm running the latest OS X Mavericks - all updated to date.
I've tested the thunderbolt display with a friends MacBook Air and I see no problems there.
Any clues what is going on? Or it this latest Kernel Panic just a coincidence compared to my previous macbook?
Thanks in advance! -
Just upgraded to Leopard now I get constant kernal panics!
I just upgraded my G4 PPC to 10.5.8. I can do things okay on my computer for a while then it does the kernal panic. All updates have been done except the prokit 5 one (I use logic and the last upgrade messed with it). Could this be causing the issue? Here is the info. I hope someone can help so I can start doing more recording!

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your currently installed OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, you did not indicate if this upgrade to 10.5.8 was from an earlier version of Leopard or if you first upgraded to Leopard then to 10.5.8 using the combo updater. I'm assuming the former, so after you've done the above repairs reinstall the 10.5.8 Combo Updater. If you did not use a Combo Updater, then you can download it from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If the above doesn't help then I would suggest reinstalling OS X as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
And, if the above doesn't help start looking at the probability of bad RAM. -
HELP: Constant Kernal Panics Macbook Pro 13inch (2010)!
My MacBook Pro (13inch, 2010? version) has been having many Kernal Panics since June this year. Given that the Retina MBP will only be out in October onwards, can anyone suggest a way to allow my Macbook Pro to live beyond 2months? Any help from pros will be greatly appreicated!

It's the discrete GPU that causes the problems because it is defective. Using integrated graphics simply means you won't see the same graphics performance as you would normally see when the system would switch to the faster GPU. Don't try any high speed gaming. -
How Do I Resolve Constant Kernal Panics?
I need help troubleshooting what is going on with my iMac.
We've been getting sporatic KPs since about Oct. 22. We have not been able to use our computer since yesterday, because looking at it the wrong way causes the black screen of death. I've looked at the reports, and I cannot tell if it is software or if there is some hardware hookup that is causing the issue. We installed Microsoft Office in September. We have several devices that we hook up (all of them are unplugged, now) - our camera, iPod, and Kindle - all of which we have had for a while. We have a backup HD that we use with Time Machine, that also has been a part of our set up for over two years. The one thing I discovered today, is that the software had not been updated to 10.7. Thinking that may be the cause, I rebooted in safe mode, downloaded the software and then restarted. I got the message that the update could not be expanded and the download may be corrupted. Add to all this: I had to restore my iTunes library from the Time Machine twice in the last two months. There is a lot going on here. I'm not looking for any magic solutions (although that would be nice), just maybe a few more things I should do and/or look at before resigning myself to spend the dough on computer repair (hate to do that if its not a hardware issue).
The first KP runs like this:

Constant Kernal Panic on Macbook Pro after 10.8 update.
Ever since I updated my MacBook Pro to 10.8 the computer has been crashing almost every hour. It is rediculus. Each time it crashes the BSD process name changes. I have tried multiple methods to remove programs such as littlesnitch which I had heard was a problem, but this did not work. The computer had not had a problem for 3 years until I updated it to 10.8. Is the new operating system broken this badly? Can someone please help me.

Does Installing Windows XP stop Kernal Panics?
i just baught a MBP 2.0 15 inch last week and had to send it in for repairs because of constant Kernal panics about ever 5-10 minutes after browsing the web using safari. The panics only occured after i started using wireless. I used the computer for about 20 hours, doing everything with it, before even connecting and it worked fine. I called apple and he told me to reinstall OSX, so i did, first an archive and install, next a complete erase and install. this did not work, as the problem persisted. Keep in mind that unlike many uses who have gotten kernal panics in login and startup screen, i have only gotten them when browsing on safari, and connecting through ituness, all wireless. Apple finally told me to send it in for repair. After reading extensivly on here, ive heard so many horror stories of people getting new mbp's and still having problems. I was just wondering it getting it repaired was a better choice, and if anyone will think they can acctually fix this problem. Let me know what u think about my issues. thanks
-BenYes!! They are amazing. I had the same problem and they replaced my entire logic board so fast it made my head spin. The problem is now history and I'm a happy man. Nobody likes the hassle sending back a computer, but it is sometimes the only fix. A new logic board solved by problems. Let me say that a week later my battery died. They replaced that pronto, as well. I'm a bit of a sucker for trying the the "first" of any new product line, but I will admit that Apple has gone beyond the normal standard of customer support in fixing it. Give them a call and chill.

Kernal Panic Over and Over--repaired, checked yesterday, now again?
Help!
My computer had problems with display, track pad, not powering up, and lots of parts were replaced in January (MacBook Pro purchased 12.31.09). Got it home, after a while constant kernal panics. tried everything, brought it into Apple store yesterday, ran diagnostics, hard disk repaired, seemed OK.
Shortly after I came home it happened again. I repaired permissions, did verify disk, no problems with disk. Updated software, including went to Java and Adobe and updated them.
Nothing works. Now the permissions note lots of problems with Remote Management (one of the updates from yesterday, 5.21) and Java (yesterday too).
What to do? Do I have to bring it back? It's very hard to figure out.
Lulu
MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8, would like to go to Lion but don't want to until my machine is stableHi Lulu,
I would bring it back to the Apple Store. There's obviously something wrong with it and it's their problem (given you just had it repaired), not your's. RAM is often the cause of KPs. Is this the original RAM or third-party that you added? -
Kernal Panics never end !!!!
I bought an intel iMac 20" intel core duo 2 ghz with 2 GB ram about 2 months ago.
Immediately it worked awesome, no problems.
The stoe engineer helped me setup bootcamp and do all the proper updates needed for it.
I started to have lots of problems after installing windows it seemed. Was getting lots of kernal panics, but i thought it was due to a video editing app (handbrake or visualhub).
I decided to do an erase and install, and did all the normal updates to 10.4.7 through software update.
After that, I decided to absorb the windows partition, and make it whole again, and then installed windows on parallels desktop.
i am now having tons of kernal panics again, but this time i realized that it is hapening at random times, even when all im doing is running safari.
I also read that my build number should have an 'a' at the end of it for the proper build, so i upgraded again to 10.4.7 (second time) and now have the 'a' at end of it.
BUT, it is still happening. Constant kernal panics every day, sometimes several a day.
my setup for reference:
20" iMac
2 GHz intel core duo
2 GB RAM
TV as second monitor ALWAYS connected
External Lacie 250 GB D2 extreme drive ALWAYS connected
I have it running about 8 - 12 hours a day, with occaisional 24 hours straight.ok...heres an update:
This morning i turned the computer on, and it showed grey apple screen, then the blue screen, then showed the "starting Mac OS X" dialog box, the blue status bar zipped across, and then the box dissapeared, and I was left with a blue screen and spinning loading symbol.
After a min, it went to black screen and said something about imac.local darwin and had a prompt (like dos) and said login, so i type my username and hit return, and then it says password. Passowrd doesnt let me type.
I tried several different scenarios, and tried nothing at all, but all result in same thing: goes back to blue screen with loading symbol spinning, then after a min returns to black screen.
So, I went to the apple reseller and brought the computer.
-they tried to start up and same thing happened.
*They replaced the samsung 1GB sticks x2 with kingston 1GB sticks x2.
-they tried to start up and same thing happened.
-they tried safe mode and same thing happened
-they tried firewire target mode and started up from another computer, but same thing happened.
so i left the computer with them to look at today. i get it back in about 6 hours.
what do you think it is? -
Vertical Lines!! Kernal Panics !!!! Please Help
Hi this is my first post to the forums. I thank you all in advance for answers. I have an IMAC 24'' 3.06 GHZ 4GB RAM that is displaying some weird characteristics. The first is the lines from left to right that are vertical. The first set is 4 lines then sets of 3. This is happening all across the screen. I have a W8 serial and saw something about defected computers is this true? I have the Applecare extended for 430+ more days and I already had a crash on the HD. Now I am having more problems. The lines worried me the most, but also I am receiving Kernal Panics. I can't even get the computer to load up. I spoke with Applecare over the phone and they referred me to the store. I got sent away twice before they finally got my computer in the store. I have now been to the store three times this week alone. Most importantly is the vertical line issue a permanent issue? I purchased the unit in July of 2008. I hope my unit is not defective. Now they are telling me they are going to replace the Logic Board as well as HD. They said this time it wasn't an HD issue but they are going to replace the HD to placate me since I have been there three times this week. The new HD is 640GB. Original is 500. If the HD is not bad are they truly accomodating me or is it deceptive practices to hide their constant issues with the CPU. I just want to find out why they are causing me to do all of this running around. I have spent over 5 hours on Phone with Applecare. I worry if this computer is going to be a recurring problem. Are the vertical lines symptoms of other issues down the road. My confidence is slowly eroding. I will give the full serial If that helps. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Adam('s Apple)How do I get to Customer Relations?
Just call 1-800-275-2273 and asked to be transferred to ACR. CALMLY explain the situation to them and have all your case numbers ready. If you don't get satisfaction with the first call, call back and talk to another rep. I went through 3 of them one time, but Apple came through in the end to my satisfaction. They will do what it takes to make you happy.

Kernal Panic Attacks - how to diagnose
I have recently started to get kernal panics on my dual processor G4 with increasing frequency. The problem started when I switched monitors to a 1600x1200 Samsung (analog connected). They went from once every few days, to every day, to multiple times a day, to the point where my HD could not complete a start up without a kernal panic during the apple screen.
I tried the following:
1) tried the Apple Hardware Test CD and it check out fine.
2) Ran Repair Disk from OS X Tiger install disk - no errors found
3) Ran Repair permissions - many errors found and corrected
4) Ran repair permissions again - no errors found
5) Panic occured while still booted from Install disk
6) Machine seemed to work when started from external HD (though only used for a short period)
7) tried to boot from internal HD again and got panic before apple screen complete
8) removed memory (3 - 512K) and tried with individual dimms only. No panic each time - startup OK.
9) restored all memory and system now seems to work
Not sure if I will get panic again, but at least I can boot from internal HD again. Any ideas as to what else I can check. I believe I have gone through Dr Smoke's steps. Could problem have been due to dust on memory?

Darwin Kernel Version 8.0.0: Sat Mar 26 14:15:22 PST 2005; root:xnu-792.obj~1/RELEASE_PPCThe "uncorrectable machine check" and Machine check exception state is pretty much an unrecoverable hardware error indicative of a more serious issue. It could be bad memory, it could be the logic board, it could be a processor issue, combination of some/all. Normally something like this may occur when the system is overstressed but faulty hardware exasperates the problem under even lesser loads.
In my case, I had intermittent panics which were hard to track down (pretty much folllowing the steps you did). I eventually did rule out the ram by running them in my Cube without any problems. Sometimes I could go weeks without an issue even under load after doing the troubleshooting but then all of a sudden, every few minutes to a few hours would result in a KP doing something simple as web browsing. Eventually it got so severe that one day, I got that machine check panic as soon as I powered on. It turned out to be one of the processors on the dual processor board failing from overheating.
This happened twice on my QS2002 within the first two years. The first time, the system could be coaxed to boot after letting it sit since the failing processor wasn't completely fried yet but the second time (not too long after the initial incident), one processor burned out completely (machine check KP right at power on). The tech showed me the chip and how bad it was. Luckily the first two times were covered under Applecare.
The third time happened out of warranty (at which point I was ready to grab the machine by the handle and fling it out a window out of frustration). Was almost ready to pull the trigger on a PM Dual G5 but decided to get the cheapest dual G4 (1.2GHz) upgrade from GigaDesign at the time in 2005 since this would hold me over until the Intel Mac's came out.
In all three cases, heat (even with attempted improvements to the airflow/exhaust) was the primary factor in the eventual processor failures since my system was always under constant load. I think the culprit was insufficient cooling of the aluminum heatsink (the GigaDesign uses a better designed and smaller copper heatsink along with two attached fans) which is magnified by a case which already has poor airflow.
I've had no problems with the machine since this brain transplant. Of course, anyone who is able to narrow it down to either the processor or logic board needs to think if it is worth sinking any more money into at this juncture considering the prices of a new Mac.
Mac OS X (10.4.7) -
My macbook pro (Mid-2010; Mountain Lion) has been crashing to Kernal Panics more and more frequently; from few times a week to now around twice a day. It's getting really fustrating and not sure what is causing it. I hope its not a hardware problem; but I think its might be Chrome, as it seems to eat alot of my harddisk space with getting constant 'Your startup disk is full' popups.
I've switched over to Safari for now and hopefully it wont crash.
I'm not sure how to paste up my Kernel Panic log; this is from Logs>DiagnosticReports:

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. -
Kernal Panic on Mac Pro...HELP!!!
So I have about 2-3 Kernal panics a week....only when using Logic Pro....Can anyone help get to the bottom of it? The system runs perfectly in all other apps and I have NVER had a crash in any other app except Logic Pro....It usually happens when I am mixing a song and it plays over and over..but sometimes happens within a few minutes of opening a project....Waves is about the only 3rd party plugs...i am completely up to date on all plugs and OS and logic...here is the latest crash log....

Kernal panic using pro tools 8.0.1
Hello, I own a Power Mac G5 that was upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. I use it for Pro Tools with the most updated version for Power PC which is 8.0.1 Cannot update to a higher version since they are for Intel based processors. My issue is I keep getting Kernal Panic on a constant basis. Ive done a Disk Repair & it continues. I was told by Apple to simply reinstall all software from scratch using Leopard. Im hessitant since I would have to reinstall numerous programs & updates, thx.
Kernel panics are the result of failing hardware, corrupt system files or incompatible system files.
Troubleshooting is tedious at best, and the process of elimination is key.
Strip ALL third party items from your machine, internally and externally.
With only a wired USB mouse, wired USB keyboard and monitor (if it has a hub, disconnect all devices) does the machine run properly or do kernel panics occur?
If no panic, add one third party device and test, and so on......
IF a panic occurs, test the RAM with Rember or Memtest, and test the system with the Apple Hardware Test from your original software discs.
If errors occur, reseat RAM, graphics card and any PCI cards and retest.
If all tests are clean with no errors, reinstall all of your software, updating in increments, testing as you go.

Mini DVI to DVI monitor Kernal Panic
I have a 20" iMac Intel Core Duo, mini DVI to DVI-D adapter, cable, and Princeton 17" DVI-D monitor. When I hook up the monitor to the iMac I immediately receive a Kernal Panic. If I restart, it also results in a Kernal Panic. It does not matter if the monitor is on or off. No monitor, no Kernal Panic. The monitor does work with a VGA adapter on a mini mac and on a G4 PowerBook. I don't have a mini DVI to VGA adapter for the iMac, so have not tried that yet. But I'd much rather have it work with DVI. Any suggestions?
did you try running a repair disk, to see if it is software related?? you could also try pram reset. (apple-option-p-r at start up, and hold til you get two sets of chimes). you could also unplug power from power supply at back of mac mini and plug it back in after a few minutes. if none of these things worked, i would contact the manufacturer of the monitor.
