Constant Kernel Panic and "You Need to Restart" screen
Hello all! I installed Leopard on my Powerbook G4 yesterday. I did the default upgrade. I then went through Software Update to get up to 10.5.4. I am getting Kernel Panics galore. Here are the latest results from the report:

I have tried creating a clean account, but the same thing keeps happening. I have also noticed that Spotlight re-indexes almost every time I have to restart.
Thanks in advance for the help! (BTW, I am posting this from another computer...)
Okay, here is the latest.
I ran both the Apple Hardware Test and Rember to check the system. Both checked out fine.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup. It had no trouble making the backup, but it wouldn't boot the machine.
I then used the Leopard Retail disc (10.5.1) and Disk Utility to erase my HD. I used the Zero-out method.
As I am sitting here right now, the "You need to restart" screen just came up. This is after starting up with the DVD and erasing the HD.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!!

Kernel panic problems / "You need to restart your computer"
Okay. My MacBook doesn't start.
Basically, I changed the boot.ini when running Windows XP in Boot Camp, and Mac OS X no longer starts. So, in a futile attempt to save myself, I tried System Restore in Windows XP, which only made the problem worse: now when I start XP, I get the configuration screen with either Parallels or Windows XP Professional, but the keyboard doesn't work, so I end up with an error saying:
"<windows root>/system32/hal.dll is corrupt" or something similar.
When I start OS X, I get the error shown here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2238.html
I followed their instructions and I reset my PRAM and I still failed. Please help, or otherwise I now own a 2000 dollar paperweight.
Trying to restore from the CD goes like this:
I press C with the CD in the drive and it starts loading with the Apple logo and the circle, as normal, and then a light-blue screen (kind of like just when Mac OS X has started but your wallpaper hasn't loaded). It stays like this, then the disc drive stops spinning, and nothing happens. Thanks for replying, I have no peripherals attached, I am booting from the MacBook Tiger DVD one that came with the machine. I get the panic kernal with or without the disc installed. All hardware checks out fine in the three hardware checks I've done. I am almost positive the problem is stemming from the Apple updates performed since this is exactly when my problems began(trying to restart after the Apple updates). I just can't get the machine to boot from the disc no matter what I try so I can reinstall the operating system. I even tried using an external DVD-ROM once to see if it would boot from it but it did the exact same thing as when I try booting from the internal drive. Yes my files are backed up to an external hard drive. I've got no problem doing a Nuke and Repave if I must but since it won't boot from the disc I don't know how I can even do this. I know it is under warranty but since the hard ware checks OK it looks like there would be a way to get it running again without sending it in for repairs. However I am starting to think that's what I'm gonna have to do. I'm just glad I still have an old clamshell iBook to work with so I can access the internet to seek help. Thanks for your input, can you think of anything else I could try?

My mac mini displays a green screen with 'mac os version not yet responded' and 'you need to restart your computer' as a warning message. Inspite of all my tries it doesnt run from the install dvd either.
Please help.Sounds like you may have a hardware problem since it won't read from DVD, and it is only a year and a half old. Hopefully all it is, is bad RAM*:

Panic Kernal: You need to restart your computer, Help please...
Yesterday I installed an update on my MacBook and everything went haywire. I installed the Apple updates
that were recommended for my computer when it did it's weekly update
check. After the install I quit all open applications and did a
restart per the on screen prompt. Finder closed and the computer just
sat for over a half hour and never would finish shutting down. No key
strokes or commands would do anything. As a last ditch effort I held
the power key down until it shut down. I waited a minute then powered
back up. The gray screen with the apple logo comes up then the spinning wheel. Then a
panic kernal saying the computer needs to be restarted. I tried ten
times then I reset the PRAM then I did two hardware checks. First the
short check then the long one. Both tests showed all hardware to be
fine. Then I called Apple. They told me to reset the PRAM, told me to
do a hardware check then told me to boot in safe mode. Then told me to
try an archive reinstall by inserting disc one, power on, then hold
the C key after the startup chime sounds. One of two things happen
when this is done, it either goes to a blank blue screen or the "You
need to restart the computer" message comes up. If I power on with the
disc in and hold the option key the hard drive and the disc shows on
the screen. If I click on the hard drive the "restart message comes up. If I
click on the disc the blank blue screen usually comes up but twice the
"restart" message came up. I have tried all of the start-up key strokes, Once I got into safe mode but I can't get into it anymore, it now gives the you need to restart message. I can get into Verbose and Single user mode but I don't know of anything to try once I'm in either of those modes.I tried to boot system from single user mode by typing in the command sh /etc/rc but a long list of code just comes up and says something about the panic kernal which I believe is telling me that the same problem
I have trying a normal boot is keeping it from booting in single user mode also. I can do a hardware test(I've done this 3 times and everything shows to be OK). The main problem I have now is it won't boot normally and it won't boot from the install disc so I am truly stuck. I am at a loss as to what I should try next
since I can't even reinstall the software. Any help will be greatly
appreciated especially since my free phone help ended 2 days ago and
today was the first time I ever needed it!!

15" Macbook Pro Mid 2010 . Constant Kernel Panic and Reboot
Hello, im having this issue from six months ago. The problem its a constant rebooting of my mac , when turned on shows a Kernel Panic inform that i copy here. I have contacted the tech support here in my country ( Argentina ) but they can not solve the problem. They told me than cand be a logic board issue, but in all the hardware test the macbook get an OK ! The only strange they discover is a electric problem in the usb ports, but i dont have any problems whith pen drives or usb external disks.
The rebooting its unpredicible , but in some cases like using the spacebar for previewing files if i do it five or six times it reboots instantly showing then the Kernel Error.
I really nedd help !
Thank you, and sorry for the monkey insland English !

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. -
Constant Kernel Panic and Freezes
Hello. I've recently upgraded to SL on my MBP (clean install) about a month ago. It's been working flawlessly until this week, where at random times, my computer freezes up and the screen starts to flicker. When I try to restart, I get the screen that says I need to restart (kernel panic screen). Sometimes it takes multiple (as in 5 or 6) tries of restarting before I can boot up. I've tried software update, repairing permissions, resetting PRAM, etc. and nothing has seemed to work. Does anyone have any other possible solutions for me to try or any insight? Any help would be appreciated as I am a student and need my computer to be working. Thanks. Here is the log:

Kernel panic and stuck on start up screen
Last week I got a kernel panic. I safe booted it and everything was fine. Now within a week it happened again. I did the safe boot again but this time it didn't work. The grey bar appeared then halfway through it was gone and now my MBP gets stuck on the start up screen. I tried doing the safe boots several more times but it still does the same thing. Help please!

I am not sure if the 2 are connected but they seem to be. My external hard drive apparently causes Kernel Panics which forces me to hard reboot the computer. So I can only assume that the external hard drive is somehow causing Finder to cause the kernel panic.
Also I've noticed that my computer seems to like re-indexing the entire hard drive over and over possibly after each kernel panic. This is the 3rd time since i've installed SL that my hard drive was reindexed from top to bottom. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but the fact that it's CPU intensive, it heats up the MacBook Pro and we all know heat on computer components means shorter life span. The GPU also seems to heat up during the indexing which I find kind of weird?
So far my experience with Snow Leopard is not so great.HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Check the manufacture web site for updated software for the external drive. Hopefully they have updated to 10.6

Kernel panic and possible bad hard drive? HELP!!!
I've been running my G4 iMac without any trouble for just shy of 4 years now. On Monday night I clicked on a menu on the Netflix web page and the computer crashed. I later figured out this was a full on kernel panic.
I happened to have Tuesday off so I spent my time backing up as much of my files as I could. While backing up the computer would occasionally have another kernel panic and freeze. Sometimes the screen would look like this (http://www.tallgrassrestoration.com/kernelpanic2.jpg), sometimes it would look like this (http://www.tallgrassrestoration.com/kernelpanic1.jpg). Eventually it just stopped starting up, as of now it just gives me a folding icon with a flashing question mark on it. I got all the files I really need burned onto DVDs, but there are still many files I would rather not lose.
I can boot it up from the OS 10.3 install disk, but the installer software does not recognize the hard drive, i.e. it does not list it as a location to install the operating system. The Disk tools does recognize the hard disk but comes up with a nasty error when I try to 'repair' the volume and will not proceed. The erase option looks like it would work, but I'd rather not go there... yet.
So I believe I have a hard disk issue. Because I don't hear any associated noises I am hoping its not hardware related, but rather a corruption in the sector where the system software is store.
Does anyone have any advice how I can proceed? Is there any way I can just use my wife's iBook and treat the iMac like an external hard drive and remove the last of my files that way? Any way I can repair this problem without wiping out or replacing the hard drive?
thanks,A couple of years ago I accidentally bought and installed two incompatible modules. I would get Kernel Panics 3 or 4 times a day. When I removed the factory module these KP dropped to a once every day or so. I would suggest you monitor closely for a while longer until we can be sure that both modules are good.
It's possible it was the RAM seating but I'd be more suspicious than that; you could always try re-installing it.
Most RAM comes with a lifetime warranty so even if it was some time ago it's worth contacting the reseller.
I use a magnetic screwdriver with torx bits too, but did keep it away from all the chips and boards.
Let us know how you get on.
cheers

Trying to recover from constant kernel panics 'You need to restart your...'
Since last night I've been having major problems with my MBP. After installing some software on my Windows 7 Bootcamp partition, and following a restart, I got a kernel panic and the message "You need to restart your computer.." in 5 languages, and the screen would freeze.
Disconcertingly the desktop video was totally screwed up - the best way I can describe it is that a looked like a really, really bad 8-bit display, with huge blocky pixels.
Multiple attempts at pressing and holding the power button, then restarting, simply replicated the problem. In the end I was eventually able to boot up using a superduper clone. I decided to reformat the MBP HDD and copy the clone over. However, during the process the screensaver came on and froze the system, so I had to restart and repeat the process, this time switching off energy saver preferences and the screensaver.
So I'm back up and running (for now). I'm about to restore my energy preferences and test out the screen saver. Fingers crossed, but in the meantime, has anyone else come across an issue like this?
I've got 3rd party RAM installed, have had it for over a year, so not sure if this is the problem (hasn't been so far). As part of my initial troubleshooting I tried resetting PRAM but this had no discernible effect, other than to make the patchy block video more uniform (if that makes sense?)
I haven't tried the Apple Hardware Test yet, just got to find my original disks! Spec of MBP as per signature below.
Lastly, after I restored my system a browser window appeared, pointing to a file in my system library which contained the following:
# File lib/activerecord/connection_adapters/postgresqladapter.rb, line 116
def quote(value, column = nil)
if value.kind_of?(String) && column && column.type == :binary
"'#{escape_bytea(value)}'"
else
super
end
end
Any views / comments / tips greatly appreciated.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer. I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro. I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory. My wife first noticed a problem with the display. Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable. The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer. The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what. Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic. The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget. It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc. I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop. He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other. I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out. Everything appered to be connected properly. Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue. So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire... I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable. I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive. I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button). The computer magically started up!!! I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3. I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive. After some time the computer froze. I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic. I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze. I managed to run Disk Utitlity. I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine. After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install. Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again. Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message. Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc. I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely. I set up the computer as a new computer. He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had. He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure. When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously. Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze. The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below. After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately. After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one. Now the computer will not boot via any method. It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down. I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times. I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference. I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out. I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer. I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer. If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else. Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
Thank you!

I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012. I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store. I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no. He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime. When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board. I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses." I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it. I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds. Again...thank you both! -

Hi, just now my computer just popped out an error message saying that "You need to restart your computer". I was able to power the iMac back (and i'm typing from my iMac). I did some research about it and it has something to do with the kernel panic..either hardware or software. Since i was able to power back my iMac, i supposed it was software-related problem? Here's the log from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/
I'm sorry it was quite long and i have no idea how to attach the text file which i have saved. What could be the problem here? And any suggestions to avoid this from happening again? My heart skipped a beat just now.. Hopefully it was no something serious such as hardware problems..
thank you!

IMac G3 Kernel Panic - You need to restart your computer - HELP
I have an iMac G3 400Mhz slot-loading with 256MB 13GB running Mac OS 10.3.3. It was all along running Ok until I tried to do an OS updating recently. After update done, re-boot and I got this cyclic message "You need to restart your computer". Tried all methods like pressing CtrlOption+PR or Option during power-up but still the same. Now at a loss as I also cannot find my OS media installation CD anymore. Can anyone suggest how to remedy this? Worse case scenario, I don't mind clean re-load OS but need help in getting a copy of the Mac OS installation media.
Welcome To Discussions KevK!
How much space is available on the 13 GB Hard Drive?
What peripherals do you have connected to the iBook?
Are there any programs or applications, that are set to load at Startup?
You may find use helpful tips in this document Resolving Kernel Panics, authored by Dr Smoke.
As the iMac G3 400 MHZ's, original pre-installed OS was Mac OS 8.6, the original system discs, will not be much help.
You will need to purchase a new set of Panther discs, or a newer version of OS X, if you wish to upgrade.
With a larger Hard Drive, and additional RAM, that iMac, is capable of running Tiger 10.4.x.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Caveat Emptor!
If any are presently available, examine these items very carefully, and if in doubt, ask questions of the seller before purchase!

Once Panther 10.3.x is re-installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.
