Constant kernel panic crashes
My macbook pro (Mid-2010; Mountain Lion) has been crashing to Kernal Panics more and more frequently; from few times a week to now around twice a day. It's getting really fustrating and not sure what is causing it. I hope its not a hardware problem; but I think its might be Chrome, as it seems to eat alot of my harddisk space with getting constant 'Your startup disk is full' popups.
I've switched over to Safari for now and hopefully it wont crash.
I'm not sure how to paste up my Kernel Panic log; this is from Logs>DiagnosticReports:

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

FireWire Device: built-in_hub, 800mbit_speedOS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Upgrade to a newer version of OS X as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else. -
Constant Kernel Panics on Mavericks 10.9.5
Hey Everyone,
I really hope someone out there can help me out because these recent kernel panics I've been getting are driving me crazy because they always happen right in the middle of some important project I'm working on.
Before I share the latest kernel panic diagnostic let me give you a bit of history on my computer. I'm running a late 2011 MBP with Mavericks 10.9.5. I had issues with the logic board in the past and got it replaced. I've only had the computer for a little over 2-2.5 years now, and started noticing lots of issues with it after an overall short period of time, mainly related to performance. The computer would run hot with the fans blazing just from watching an HD video on Youtube. Admittedly I do heavy graphics work with Adobe software and 3D apps like Cinema4D. Some of the research I've been doing regarding these kernel panics has lead me to believe that this could potentially be a heating issue. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I decided that I would install more RAM in the computer, bringing it up from 8GB to 16GB. Apparently this Macbook model was only sold with a max of 8GB of RAM, but I heard that it could handle up to 16. So maybe this is potentially the issue, I am running more RAM than I'm "supposed" to, even though the system can technically handle it. Other people have reported issues with the Radeon graphics card (I've got the 6770 M installed).
It doesn't end there though, unfortunately. About two months or so ago I started having major problems with Dashboard. After running processor intensive applications (it would seem), Dashboard would start eating up crazy amounts of memory, stalling all my running programs. Some people said that turning off apps within Dashboard that constantly received data (like the weather app for example) could be causing this. I did that, but it didn't help. I would have to constantly go into Application Manager and kill Dashboard. Eventually I got fed up with doing this and found out how to permanently turn it off. That helped with the memory issues. But THEN the kernel panics started happening. They had happened very rarely in the past, but now it is literally every 2-3 days. And the last bit of info I can share to hopefully help someone figure this problem out for me is that I think the last two times they happened, it was while I was in the middle of typing up a document in Open Office. It definitely did just happen while using Open Office, but I can't confirm the previous one. I am going to be very careful to note exactly which application I am using when it happens from here on out.
Here's the Apple Diagnostic report from the last one:

I took a look into the Library/StartupItems folder and I can see the "tun" folder which correspondes to that foo.tun process. Should I just delete the folder? Doesn't seem to be any way to turn it "off". Also, I'm not sure how to turn off or disable Google Chrome Helper. I've been reading from various other people that it has been causing memory leak issues, but couldn't find any way to disable it. Some even said that after they uninstalled Chrome, the Helper app was still running. What should I do about that? Thanks. -

many thanks for any advice..(and sorry for the huge paste)

Constant kernel panic in regular boot sequence - HELP!
Hi,
I purchased my mac pro in march of 08. By june, my monitor had begun emitting a pink hue over everything. I replaced the monitor only to find that the problem was related to the computer itself, the pink color persisted on the new monitor. So I started using the one other working monitor port and researching the problem. I heard from a couple people that it sounded like a problem with my video card. It continued to worsen, the crash rate started to escalate slowly over a period of 4-5 months. Now it consistently crashes within 5 minutes of booting up, usually crashing immediately when the interface loads or shortly beforehand.
I took it into an apple certified technician to have it looked at. I brought only the computer itself since the problem had persisted on multiple monitors. One week later, they told me there was nothing wrong with the video card and they couldn't reproduce the problems i had described. So i bought a new vga/dvi converter and brought it home only to find the EXACT same issues on both monitor ports, pink screen or constant kernel panic.
So I zapped the PRAM 3 times, reset the power source, cleaned out the inside of the computer, played chinese firedrill with my ram cards, and rebooted in safemode. It FINALLY WORKS but ONLY in safemode which leads me to believe there is a faulty system extension or driver that is causing the kernel panic.
What is the simplest way to resolve this problem? I can't spend 5 hours isolating the possible .kext files. Will upgrading my OS to leopard fix these issues, i.e. replace the system extensions with new files that might eliminate the problem?
I appreciate anyone that can offer help. Thanks! Thanks BDAqua for your feedback!
I checked the panic log and the system log but still can't see what might be causing the problem. I tried booting from disk by pushing the 'd' key directly after the startup beep and before the gray screen appears to no avail. I also tried the 'c' key, command-'d', and option-'d' to no avail. When i access the bootdisk from the volume on my desktop and click 'install mac os x' i get the following error:
"Mac os 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine. Please consult the documentation for a list of supported Macintosh computers."
This seems odd since i am running 10.4.11. Below is a sample entry from the kernel panic log and the correlated logs from system log at the time of the panic. Is there anything else i can do? I don't understand why the mac tech support wasn't able to reproduce these debilitating problems.

Constant Kernel Panic in OS X! HELP!
Hey All!
I got major problems with my Mac Pro.
I continue to get Kernel Panic duing Software Update, Moving big amounts of files around, using different applications (everything from apple apps, games and Photoshop/Modo).
I just reinstalled my comp and resettet my harddisk (wrote all zeroes to it) and got Grey Screen Of Death (please restart your computer) again. I booted my Mac Pro up as external harddisk and used my iBook disk utility to write zeroes to my Mac Pro Harddisk and it worked. Now after installing OS X, it supricingly crashed again with kernel panic.
I did a hardware test using the DVD's i got with my Mac Pro. It said everything was in perfect order :/
heres my panic.log

I dont know what to do to get rid of this constant kernel panic shutdowns
Please write if you need more information. At the moment i dont know what to do.First you cannot format the Mac Pro using Disk Utility on your iBook. You need to use the Disk Utility on the OS X Installer Disc that came with the Mac Pro. Insert the OS X Installer Disc (Mac Pro) then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the gray startup screen with the dark gray Apple logo appears. Release the key when the spinning gear appears.

1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Option button and select the GUID partition scheme option then click on OK. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed to install OS X.
If the computer kernel panics when starting from the DVD then there is likely a hardware problem. You can run the hardware test by again restarting with the OS X Installer Disc and after the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the hardware test screen appears. I suggest you run the long tests to see if any hardware faults are detected.
Hardware problems can only be resolved by taking the computer to your local Apple service center.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values. -
Recurring Kernel Panic Crashes
hi folks. okay, i am new here and not too super-tech savvy, but am having an annoying problem with my new G5.
i bought a refurbed Dual 2.5 G5 from the apple store a month ago. (not the dualcore, and not the line before it, but the product line before that, when 2.5Ghz was the top model.) ever since i got it i have been having constant Kernel Panics (the screen goes dark and says "You need to restart your Computer")
i have not yet added ANY external devices. but the weird thing is: it is ONLY happening when i am connected to the internet and browsing, regardless of what app i am using (Safair, Navi, Firefox, IExplor.) it has not happened any other times.
now, so far i have repaired disk permissions, but this hasnt helped. i dont know what to do. i am wondering if it has something to do with the modem connection, as i am using the built in 56k V.92, so i worry that this may be a cause.
I am in a weird position because, since it is a refurb, i wonder if maybe whatever it is that had it returned for refurbing may still be haunting the system. At this point, i dont feel i should have to go out and spend more money to buy TechTool or something like that simply to troubleshoot the problem. i am hoping to get some advice here before i contact customer service.
Here are my specs.
Dual 2.5Ghz PowerPC G5
512 MB DDR SDRAM
OSX 10.4
no external devices added yet, and i am not doing anything that would be excessing the current amount of RAM (unless the RAM itself is corrupted)
here is a quick copy of the most recent Panic Log:

Dual 2.5 PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4)Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The fact that PPP is mentioned in the log suggests that either the software for connecting to the internet has some serious corruption, or there may be a problem with the modem itself. I would backup your data, and then see if the kernel panics have resulted in directory damage:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If the disk appears to be OK, and you aren't using any download optimizing software, then I would definitely have the modem looked at.
If there are errors which Disk Utility can't repair through Repair Disk, then I would get Alsoft Disk Warrior 3.0.3 to attempt to repair the directory.
If your hard disk is especially full, directory corruption can happen easily.
But it can also happen for numerous other reasons, which is why I recommend backing up before attempting the directory repair. -
MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.
Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:

A way to know that the crash is gonna happen is that the internet stops working and as long as I click on the wifi icon on the menu bar, The crash occurs. Could someone please help to put me out of misery please . Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Have a nice day.i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
hope this helps -
Please help me decode frequent kernel panic crashes on my macbook pro, I have not been able to diagnose the real cause, I am pasting my last panic report below, any help will be highly appreciated...

A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

10.5.3 kernel panic/crash upon boot-up
I haven't been able to properly boot-up my Mac Pro (early 2008 model) since the 10.5.3 update. Prior to the update, my machine worked fine. But after I installed the update and then restarted, my Mac Pro immediately crashed during the gray Apple start-up screen. This was the first time something like that ever happened (I got the so-called "black curtain of death" -- the screen that prompts you to do a hard restart of the computer in about four different languages).
I did the hard restart as told, got my Mac Pro to the desktop screen, but as soon as all my icons loaded up, I got the same "black curtain" screen. After a third hard restart, the computer seemed to work fine for a couple days.
And then yesterday happened.
I tried to boot-up but got the "black curtain" screen several times, either during the gray Apple start-up screen, or just after the desktop images loaded. All told, I probably did about a dozen hard restarts yesterday (though I was able to boot-up in Safe Mode). I have tried to repair the disk permissions and the hard disk via the Leopard DVDs, as well as via Disk Utility on my start-up hard drive, but none of that seemed to have fixed the problem.
I'm concerned that all of these hard restarts are messing with my system drive (though I am successfully repairing disk permissions and the disk drive -- at least according to Disk Utility).
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, has anyone had any real success in solving it? I am awaiting for my Time Capsule drive to arrive from Apple so I can do a more thorough back-up of my system, as I have not tried an Archive and Install yet (or, God forbid, a total Leopard re-install).
One final bit of info -- in the event that it matters to anyone: I am currently using my afflicted Mac Pro to post this message, in normal operating mode (not Safe Mode). After the last kernel panic/crash, I left the computer off for about five hours, and then booted it up with no apparent problems.
But I also have no way of knowing if it's in proper working order. I did successfully repair disk permissions one last time using my start-up hard disk. Should I restart with the OSX install disk and repair it from there, just to be sure?
Sorry for the long post. This problem is a most unpleasant surprise. My thanks to anyone for making it this far.
Kindly,
-- NaveenOK Guys, heres the solution, this will fix the problem in 5 mins. Hope this gets me some kudos lol. This is the solution for when you power up your mac you get the please restart curtain within a few seconds and regardless how many times this does not go away.
Here goes.
1) Boot into Safe mode (takes longer than normal boot). This is done by pressing the shift key when you hear the mac chime and holding it until you see the rotating cog then release the ket and the mac will boot up into safe mode.
2) select Go to folder in the finder menu at the top of the screen.
3) Type in the following: /System/Library/Extensions/
this will take you directly to the right folder.
4) Locate the file: BootCache.kext and delete it.
Now simply restart. this file will be recreated on the first restart.
you should not get the restart message now on startup and your mac should boot fine.
Happy days
Let me know how you get on. -
Time Machine backup cause kernel panic crash
I bought the new iMac and transferred everything from my old G4. Initially everything worked great, but now I get a kernel panic crash when time machine runs a routine backup. Any ideas?
I am connected to a LaCie External Drive using the Firewire port. It's could be something wrong with the setup of the LaCie, especially if it's new. Double-check it, per #C1 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If it's old, it may be something wrong with the LaCie itself. Start by trying to Repair your backups, per #A5 in the same Tip.
Also, does the LaCie have it's own power supply?
Are any other external disks connected and being backed-up? -
CLASS ACTION FILED AGAINST APPLE FOR DEFECTIVE MACBOOK LOGIC BOARDS
I was one of the many unfortunate individuals who ended up paying Apple the $310 repair fee (more than $400 total, diagnostics included) to fix what was a defective logic board causing constant kernel panics. I don't think the suit has come to a conclusion or a settlement has been reached, but after spending the last month or so on this board trying to diagnose my kernel panics, I figured many others with similar problems would be interested in knowing about this.
If anyone has any more up-to-date information on the suit or on what individuals should do if they believe they fall into the Plaintiff Class, please share!CLASS ACTION FILED AGAINST APPLE FOR DEFECTIVE MACBOOK LOGIC BOARDS

Constant Kernel Panics in PowerMac G5...
My uncle's PowerMac G5 is having constant kernel panics, almost every time it's turned on. Does repairing permissions in disk utilities, is a good step to ry and fix the problem?
The computer is running leopard 10.5.You did not say how much time elapses after startup before the G5 experiences a Kernel Panic. Given the age of the machine, it is possible that your Uncle's G-5 needs a good internal cleaning.
Do not just blow out the dust with an aerosol. That leaves a dust film on the surface of the electronic components which acts as an insulator. I suggest that you remove all boards and vacuum them separately using a soft brush head. Pay particular attention to graphics cards with fans mounted on the GPU. These accumulate an unbelievable amount of dust. Blow them out first then vacuum.
Don't forget the CPUs. Remove the aluminum covers and clean the visible surfaces. The covers a very flimsy so be careful when removing and replacing them or they will not snap back into place when you put the machine back together.
Voice of Experience here. -
I have recently been having kernel panic crashes, and I believe I have narrowed it down to an issue with an audio driver/kext, but I'm not sure which; nor how to properly remove it. It only happens when I attempt to launch an audio application - I.E. Garageband. This all started upon my upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Any help on fixing this would be much appreciated.

If there's anything else possibly causing this in there, I'm fine to remove it too. I just want this problem fixed.
Thank you.I'm currently attempting to remove the kexts in question, but I continually get "Permission Denied"; even in Safe Mode.
Is there any other way to remove them?
Right now this is how I'm going about it in terminal:
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AmbrosiaAudioSupport.kext
--- EDIT--
Disreguard this. I was able to fix this problem, and now my entire problem is solved. Thank you so much!

Kernel Panic/Crash Explanation?
Hi all! I've been using 10.5 without a hitch since it's release. However, recently had a Kernel panic/crash.
I have had my iMac for about 2 years now, and I have had only TWO kernel panics: One occurred two days BEFORE installing Leopard, and this one now.
I have pasted the log of the crash below, as per an Apple article's recommendation. (I notice it mentions "Bluetooth" quite a bit--but I really never use that and I don't recall pairing with anything in the last several months)
I simply want to know what I should do next, if anything... run Disk Utility? go on about my business?
FYI, I was running Mail, Safari and iChat at the time.

Message was edited by: Doug DellisHey Will (and Gunnar)--first of all, thanks for your quick responses and input!
Just FYI, I followed Will's advice first, partly because I had not yet seen your message, Gunnar.
In any event, here's what I did--something interesting happened first:
1) I went into my system preferences to deactivate Bluetooth, and somewhere along the line, I believe I accidentally clicked on a "rename device" option. Suddenly, the options to "power off" and "make discoverable" were grayed out and I was unable to deselect either.
2) After restarting once or twice, the selections were available again. Go figure. Anyhow, I unchecked everything. Bluetooth off.
3) Starting up off of the Leopard install disk, I ran Disk Utility--first doing a Disk Verify and Repair. Everything came back A-OK!
4) I then verified and repaired my permissions. (I had a bunch of HP Printer related repairs, but that's to be expected, I had installed updated drivers)
5) Restarted the Mac and here I am.
I have not yet used your suggestions, Gunnar--do you think it's worth the effort at this time, or should I wait if and when this kernel panic happens again?
In other words, am I in the clear for now, or is there a definite next step?
Once again, thank you both for your help!
