Constant noise inside upper left of machine

A constant whirring fan like noise suddenly appeared on my older MacBook Pro yesterday. It seems to come from inside the top left hand corner of the machine. I have spent several hours reading the MANY postings of people have the exact same problem. It is astounding how many people are having this very same problem. I read all the postings, done everything suggested: installed the fan control program, reset the SM whatever, monitored the CPU's in Activity Monitor, I have done EVERYTHING suggested. No one has resolved this issue short of taking the machine in for repair and/or replacement. My machine is older and no longer covered. Since this problem is so widespread and prevelant it does not seem fair that all of us inflicted with this constant noise should have to pay for repair! Why will Apple not resolve this? Anyone? Help!

OK--so it likely is the fan and not the hard drive. I gather the noise is there all the time and not just when the fan speeds up? It could be something mechanical, like a bearing starting to go out or even some piece of trash that has gotten trapped and is rattling around. Do both fans spin at around the same speed? And does the buzz change with the speed?
You probably are hearing the fan, but to be sure that the noise isn't coming from the left speaker, temporarily mute your volume to check.
It may be that the bearing is starting to go, but the fan is still working well enough that you don't get an error code on the Apple hardware test. But bearings usually start going slowly, rather than suddenly as you describe. This leads me to think that possibly some piece of trash got into the fan blade area and is maybe caught between a fan blade and the housing, and is just making noise. If this is the case, it may eventually go away as suddenly as it came. I had a leaf in my truck heater fan that caused a buzz for a surprisingly long time, but it finally broke up and blew out.
Probably the best course of action is to monitor the fan for a while and try to tolerate the buzzing noise. Check the fan speed frequently with iStatPro to be sure it is spinning at close to the speed of the right fan. As long as it is doing this, it will be cooling your Mac properly.
If the fan is actually failing, it would be expected to spin ever more slowly and erratically, and at some point in time, you would get an error code with "MOT" if you ran the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. If this happens, it will be time to have it replaced.
Good luck!

Unfortunately if there are various colours across the screen then you have broken the LCD Screen and it will need replacing. If the colours change when you press the area lightly then this is another symptom that you've broken the screen.
Sorry to give the bad news!

    Hi
It's likely your fan,  It always runs on a MBA.  Mine is very quiet, others report some noise - here is one link.  There are lots of others.
    Hope this helps

  • My late 2010 MBP is having a noise on the upper left hand side while starting up. is that from the internal fans or the HDD? is it cause for worry? am i going to lose the comp or the data?

there is a noise from the upper left side of the machine at the time of starting up? is that from the HDD or the motherboard fan or the processor fan? recently my 3.5 year old HP laptop crashed and it was only later that i came to know that the heating issues had led to the motherboard being affected. i want to avoid such problems with my MBP.
i would be grateful if some one could reassure me as to the probabilities of the problem which i am facing from the machine. the noise mentioned above is mostly at start up but at times also at the time of running of the machine though more intermittently so.

Are you still under warranty? If so, call Apple and report the problem and get a case number. If you do have a hardware problem, a case number will document that it originally occurred under warranty, and Apple will honor your warranty until the problem is fixed.
You can also run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It will be on one of the grey system discs that originally came with your computer. On your model, it may also be possible to boot to it by holding down "D" as you boot up. If the AHT detects a hardware problem with your fan or hard drive, you will get an error code.
Alternatively, if you have access to an Apple Store, you can make an appointment at the genius bar and have a hardware test run.
There is also a utility you can run which will give a good check on the physical health of your hard drive:
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
SMART Utility seems to be a bit more critical than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner. You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
Also, here's a link where you can listen to failing hard drive sounds:
    http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
If you do have a hardware problem, a hardware test should detect it. If it's a fan, you want to replace it ASAP. If it's one of two, wouldn't hurt to replace both of them.
If the hardware tests don't show anything, you may have some other problem like maybe a bit of trash or debris caught up in your fan which is making noise. It wouldn't hurt to keep tabs on your fans with something like iStatPro.
    Good luck!

  • Noise on the left side of the keyboard?

I have a MacBook Pro and since 2 days ago I'm hearing a noise of the left side of the keyboard.
The noise is constant and it looks like its from the disk. Why it can be? I'm not able to describe the noise but it sounds like the disk working but with a glitch.
    Any advice? Thanks

It looks like the sound comes from a external port? Is that possible?
Not unless the sound is coming from somewhere else inside the machine and you hear it when your ear is pressed against the ports. None of the ports ever emit sounds by themselves.
The sound looks like a disk head rolling?
A sound can't be seen, so it can't look like anything.
In rare instances, the CPU and/or GPU can emit noises, and if the noise increases when you begin a download, perhaps that's what is happening in your machine. Take it to an Apple Store or authorized service provider to be evaluated.

  • Optical out sends constant noise to speakers

    Hi,
Is it normal that when I connect the optical out to the surround sound system the speakers produce a constant hissing noise. If I connect any other device with optical out to the surround system instead of the AppleTV, the speakers don't produce this annoying feedback noise. Is this a problem with my specific AppleTV or is this a design malfunction in all AppleTV devices.
The noise always has a constant volume.
I have tried connecting it to a different surround sound system, and the AppleTV
still produces the same noise. It's likely that most people won't be bothered by
this, but I have sensitive ears and I did expect high quality output from this
rather expensive device (given the limitations apple has enforced upon it, even though the hardware is capable of so much more).
    Thnx.
(To bad I couldn't get online support from Apple for the AppleTV, seems
they only have e-mail service for iTunes store????)

This is a public update of Lion available since last night.
    No a developer thing.
Click in your "Apple" menu (top left) and then "Software Update"
    The usual procedure.
I have left my machine on all night long and the sound is still good and the "SoundStay" app is still runnig fine.

  • How can I return to previous page? There used to be an arrow in upper left side of screen that would allow this, but it has disappeared.

I have the latest version of Firefox, 5.0 installed today, but no arrow in upper left part of screen that previously would let me return to previous page.

can I somehow edit the location of where I can find all the sheets (right now they are on top of the page, and you can't see all of them listed at quick glance but must scroll/arrow through them)
On my machine I just hit shift-command-j (the keyboard shortcut I assigned in System Preferences) and a list of the sheets in the current document pops up:
I type a number from the list and jump immediately to that sheet. The hands never have to leave the keyboard.
(This particular document had a sheet named for each month.  But the sheets in your document automatically will be listed instead.)
This is done via a Jump to Sheet Automator Service (Dropbox download).  To install just doubleclick the .workflow package and (if needed) click 'Download Anyway' in System Preferences > Privacy & Security.
Installation will cause a new item to appear in your Numbers > Services menu.  Then, if you want a keyboard shortcut, go here in System Preferences and add one:
You can rename or remove the service by holding down the option key in Finder and choosing Go > Library > Services. You can also view the AppleScript contaned within the service by opening the .workflow package in Automator.
Note, also, that in Numbers 3 you don't have to use those left-right arrows upper right to slowly scroll left-right to the sheets that are out of view.  Just move your cursor up to the "band" with the "tabs" and drag left or right.  That's much faster than using the arrows.

  • T61 Buzz coming from upper left hand side when on battery power.

I have had 2 or 3 T61's exhibt the same problem. When the laptop is on battery power, I hear a very annoying buzzing noise coming from the upper left hand corner of the laptop. It seems to originate right next to the exhaust vent next to the speaker. Does anyone know what can be causing this? I have the most recent BIOS update as well. The second the unit is plugged back into A/C power, the sound disappeares.
    Its driving me crazy!!

This is a hardware problem or glitch with the older Core 2 Duo processor, it was industry wide problem, there is no real fixes for it, other than to turn power saving features off and put the processor at max performance on battery.

  • Slideshow settings  made impossible by a big black rectangle covering the upper-left half of the screen/photo,

Slideshow settings made impossible by big black rectangle covering the upper-left half of the screen/photo, appearing when I move the cursor. Disappears when I start the slideshow. Restart does not help.

    Thanks,
    -  First: Linc Davis' question seems to be relevant: Indeed, when I disconnect my second display, the problem disappears.  However, reconnecting the display makes the problem reappear again.
    - I use iPhoto 9.5.1. and Mac OS 9.5.2.  The machine is a MacPro first part of 2008 (not a MacBook Pro as I inadvertantly said in my original question). Processor 2X2,8 GHz Quad-core intel Xeon. Memory 6 GB, with new (2yrs old) 2 TB SATA-disk (WDC WD2002FYPS-02w380 Media) as hard disk.
    - Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing - with only part of the settings display (in Norwegian) visible.
    - I have looked for a solution in the iPhoto settings, turned the program off& on, and restarted the computer, all without success.
    -  The library is, as I understand it, located in users/[me]/pictures/iPhoto Library.
    -  No, as I remember I did not apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem.  I have regularly updated the programs, as they come, without checking the results on each program.
    -  I run a managed library
    -  Apparently there is 1,29 TB free space (out of 2 TB) on my boot drive [=central hard drive, see above?].

  • Problem with windows shrinking vertically and becoming stuck in upper-left corner of screen.

Does anyone else have problems with open windows shrinking vertically and becoming "pinned" to the top-left corner of the screen in OSX 10.9? They snap back to the upper-left if I try to move them. I have to Quit or Force Quit the apps and restart them.
I have a Mac Mini, and I have it hooked up to a TV via HDMI. This only seems to happen when I switch the TV input source *from* the Mac Mini to, for example, DirecTV. When I switch the TV's input source *back* to the Mac Mini HDMI connection, all seems fine; except that some or all of the windows that were on the desktop have shrunken vertically, and they are "stuck" in the upper-left corner of the screen. When I try to move the windows out of the upper-left corner, they snap right back. Very weird.
Everything else about the desktop and the Mac Mini appears just as I left it. The screen resolution hasn't changed - nothing like that. Although my first thought is perhaps the screen resolution is, briefly, changed to a lower resolution when the Mac Mini detects that its "monitor" connected via HDMI (in this case my TV) doesn't appear to be there because I have switched the input source of the TV. That's just a guess. And even if that's correct, I don't know how to fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I don't remember this happening before I upgraded to OSX 10.9 Mavericks. I'm not 100%, but it seems like something I would have remembered. So the culprit could be 10.9, or it could be something else I have installed recently.
Thank you to anyone that can answer this for me.

    same here:
Overview: I've seen it occur with the symptoms described by the OP while running Xcode, almost exclusively  after waking my laptop from sleep mode.  It effects non-Apple apps as well, but sometimes differently-- the window(s) open in Eclipse Juno for instance will sometimes disappear entirely such that they are totally inaccessible.  As the OP noted the only way to clear the problem is to force quit the app and restart it (quite a hassle if you have multiple project windows open at once).  I run Juno on Win32 and debian Linux also and have never seen behavior like this, so given that the problem has been observed in Apple branded apps and the fact that it only started after I installed Mavericks I would also posit that it is a Mavericks bug.  That said, I do run a third-party app called WindowMagnet (v. 1.6 by CrowdCafe) that affects the window system, allowing Windows 7 Aero style window snapping; does anyone else having this problem use WindowMagnet?
Steps to reproduce:  open Xcode, put the machine to sleep, wake the machine -- this bug will appear intermittently
Expected results: windows should remain the same size/configuration they held prior to sleep
Actual results: intermittently windows will be 'stuck' in the upper-left corner of the display or entirely invisible
System info: mid 2012 macbook pro (OSX 10.9.1)

  • Idea centre K410 clicking noise inside the cabinet

I have just bought a desktop computer Lenovo ideacentre K410. When in operation there is always quite an audible noise inside the cabinet, it's like small stowns rolling down the mountain. I suspect it's made by HDD.  A service centre told me it's normal, but it's rather loud and can be distinctly heard at distance 3-5 metres. What can be done about this? Please help.

On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

I managed to boot the computer and get the desktop to show. I now have a "repaired" computer. There are several problems that have cropped up. One is that I can only start up now in Safe Boot mode. Is there a way to turn it off? Also, I do not have a sound list, so I can't access anything requiring audio. Google Chrome only shows up as a white screen. Pictures that loaded before don't load in browsers, etc. Any suggestions? I figure I should reinstall Mac OS Lion for starts, maybe even do a mirror backup and reformat the drive. I think this drive has turned into scrambled eggs...what a headache!
