Constant rebooting of 3rd Gen. 10gb ipod

I have a problem with an iPod (detailed below). I appreciate that it is probably broken in a hardware sense but I'd like to know what exactly about it is broken (HD, logicboard, buttons!), to arm myself with an idea of the cost come the long trip to the repair shop...
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
MODEL: 3rd gen. 10 gig with docking connector (over a year old) US version.
OCCURRING SITUATION: When the iPod is on, regardless of connection to PC or MAC via USB (2, 1.1 or 1) or Firewire and even when unconnected.
SYMPTOMS: Constant re-booting. Shows Apple logo then reboots, etc... until battery is dead. There is also a whirring while it is booting then a click as it fails and reboots (however this may be normal as I didn't notice it before and only hear it now when putting my ear to the back plate). All buttons are unresponsive while booting (or rather have no effect on the process). Boot cycles are about 2-3 seconds apart. Windows XP will recognise that a USB device is connected but can't tell what it is and ipod will charge via Firewire but continues a constant cycle of reboots while charging.
TRIED (but ineffective) FIXES:
+ Connecting to different PC's and MAC's
+ Various ipod button combinations to illicit a change in ipod behaviour
+ Different cable connectors through different standards to PC's, MAC's
+ iTunes updates
+ iPod updater
+ Shouting "Why don't you work?" at iPod

Just to understand it though, wouldn't the firmware on the logicboard still enable me to run some diagnostics despite a HD failure?
Yes, yes it would. If you were to do the right thing, you could run a diagnostic.

  • 3rd gen 8GB ipod touch stuck on connect to itunes

This isn't fair. I just bought this 3rd gen 8gb ipod touch (my first ipod ever, only owned Mp3 players) from best buy today and i can't even use it...
I'm going to start from square one, this will be long-winded, so forgive me in advance. But detail might help you guys help me out...
Okay, all giddy with excitement I boot up my touch for the first time. It tells me to connect it to itunes. I do that, hooking up the touch to the computer via usb. Vista detects it, installs the "apple mobile device" drivers just fine. Good, so then I open up itunes -- latest version -- and it's telling me to set up my ipod; name it, etc. Alright, I'm almost bursting at the seams here with excitement, but then itunes is notifying me that iOS4 is out. I upgrade, it takes a few minutes to do its stuff, it's done, and bam it's working. I play with the ipod a little bit, looking at the apps that already came with it. I disconnect, play with it, then reconnect to the computer again.
So now, itunes for some reason is doing a "recovery" process -- i did not tell it to initiate this. So it's in the process of "recovering" (backing up, i guess?) and Vista is prompting me to install the driver "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery)" I tell it ok, locate and install them. It does that, I'm guessing, for it's now prompting me to insert a CD. Well, there is no CD so I tell it to find this driver on the internet. It says "cannot find drivers check manufacturer's support site blah blah blah." At this point, itunes tells me that it cannot complete the "recovery process" -- no error code or anything, and the dialog box closes.
Now, my ipod goes into the connect to itunes screen. Itunes does not recognize it, for it does not even display my ipod at all. Vista does however, and each time i connect the ipod to the computer it attempts to install the "apple mobile device (recovery)" driver and fails each time. I don't know what's happening. I've lost all functionality in my ipod, can't even get into DFU. iTunes just refuses to recognize it. I've tried all of those fixes (reinstalling itunes, rebooting, trying that method where you go into device manager and update the apple mobile device (recovery) drivers....all of it doesn't work). I've spent hours websearching...
And I'm at a loss. I'm ready to throw this thing somewhere. Can you guys suggest any help for me? Please...

  • 3rd Gen 40GB iPod losing connection to computer

I have a 3rd Gen 40GB iPod that I have replaced the battery in (a long time ago) and it has been working fine for a long time. Recently, in the past month, I haven't been able to use my iPod because when I connect it to the computer via Firewire, the iPod loads and is mounted on the desktop, but then it disconnects itself from the computer. Thats followed by a "Device Removed Improperly" warning. If I fiddle around with the dock connector, I can get it to load again, but then the same thing happens.
Also, I cannot seem to get it to charge in my car anymore. If I fiddle around with the dock connector, it will start to charge then it will stop.
Does this sound like the dock connector issue?
Things I've tried - various firewire / USB2 ports and cables.
If it is a dock connector issue, is there a way to manually fix that by opening it up? Or must apple fix it?

having moved through the apple world of ipods and shuffles and phones and laptops, i have just found in moving my lovely 3rd gen (20?gb) ipod during our move. however i now have a macbook pro, and although my lovely 3rd gen ipod is playing and works, it is NOT syncing to my laptop. and i've discovered there are loads at itunes songs that i didn't back up and transfer through generations. so///
here's what happens (and i've done the reset of holding down the buttons until the apple appears).
nothing on my laptop. nothing. at all. but the ipod looks like it is receiving a charge... but it is not on seen on my desktop, not in itunes.
    help anyone? thanks.

  • 3rd Gen 20GB iPod not recognized by iTunes 10.5

I decided to dust off my old 3rd Gen 20GB (firewire) iPod that's been in my closet for many years.
However for some reason iTunes 10.5 will not recognize it, so I can't copy songs to it or check for firmware updates, etc.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the iPod itself as:
    - Windows successfully mounts it as the I: drive.  I can browse files on the iPod with Windows Explorer.
    - Foobar 2000 can successfully copy files to it.
    - I can then drag files from Windows Explorer to iTunes as a Playlist and then play those songs from the iPod within iTunes.
I've gone through the troubleshooting steps on the Apple Support site but no luck.
One interesting point: Windows is unsuccessful at "Restarting" the iPodService from Windows Services manager, I have to kill it in Task Manager.
    Any suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks

I guess I have to assume my iPod is defective?  What's strange is that I can access the iPod file system from Windows ... why can't iTunes?
Aren't there any iTunes or iPodService logs that might provide some clues?

  • 3rd Gen. Ipod Touch Access To Music On An External Hard Drive

Wondering if anyone has heard of or experimented with getting your iPod touch to access music files from an external hard drive. I have a 3rd gen. 64gb touch that is full and even though I love the storage capacity of the iPod Classic, I would hate to lose the touch functionality by going to one. I listen to the majority of my music while on the road for work. What I imagined in my head would be to transfer my music libray to a portable hard drive and have my Touch connected to it where it could access it. I know you can transfer your music library to an external hard drive connected to your computer and have iTunes access it but wasn't sure if the iPod would be able to do this.
It doesn't seem like Apple will ever increase the size of the iPod Touch beyond 64gb since it looks like everyone is pushing music streaming. I guess I'm one of those people who want their music anytime and anywhere without having to have an internet connection.
    Thanks,

You can get a HD like this. It uses wifi to and an app to access the HD

  • Connection problems using Macbook pro and 3rd gen firewire ipod

    Hello,
I have been trying to get my girlfriends old 3rd gen ipod to synch on our mac but when connected, the ipod charges but is not recognised at all by the mac. nothing shows up in itunes, or the desktop but the ipod is definitely charging and connected fine. I was told by someone that the newer versions of itunes are not back compatible with these older ipods so ive wiped itunes, reinstalled the earliest mac version i can find (7.4) with no success. I cant find any mac versions older than this although windows versions are readily available.
anyone had a similar problem and know how to remedy this incredibly annoying problem?
thank you very much for your time.

    is there a work around
Not with an eMac, iMac, or iBook.

  • 3rd Gen. IPOD-Won't load songs from Itunes.

My sister gave me her 10 GB 3rd Gen Ipod, and it didn't come with the software. I used the Ipod updater and loaded the latest software. Itunes opens when I plug in the Ipod, but a window comes up that says the songs cannot be copied onto this Ipod.
All the songs have been imported from CDs, so I don't understand.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Jess

The message you got - did it go something like The iPod "whatever" is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes library and replace all existing songs....
If so, you should click on the affirmative answer and then you can sync.

  • 3rd Gen 32GB iPod Touch Caushes iTunes to crash when connected.

I just bougth a brand new iPod touch 32GB model Number A1318
I connected it to my iMac with OS X 10.6.1 and iTunes 9.0
It detects the new iPod touch and activate it.
But itunes crashes, so I can not sinc with it.
    How do I fix this?
I tried reinstalling iTunes and iPod support from the Snow Leopard DVD, with no luck.

    Hi,
I just want to get in on this one as well because I have the exact same problem. (ipod touch 3rd gen -recently purchased- itunes 9.01 crashes)
When I go to sync my ipod, iphoto will open by default. I am able to see my ipod in the iphoto device list, but I cannot access it - I can only eject it. What is more, itunes will always crash at the same time. I am unable to reopen it.
The only workaround I have right now is that if I delete all the content/settings on my ipod, I am able to re-sync it with itunes. The next time I want to sync it however, I will have to repeat the reset (not ideal!).
If anyone has any help I would appreciate it.

  • 3rd Gen nano iPod + tops

well, im looking at the nike + tops long sleeves. But they dont say whether the pockets fit the 3rd Gen ipods. Has anyone got any idea or where tobuy some or when they will be out?

What format are the songs in? What bit rate? The number of songs an iPod is "supposed" to hold is predicated on the idea that the songs will be 3 minutes long, 128 kbps AAC files. If your tracks are .wav or Apple Lossless, fewer of them will fit.
You can try restoring your iPod: Hook the iPod up to your computer. In the middle of the Summary page in iTunes, click the Restore button. Note: this will delete everything on the iPod so be sure you have everything backed up.
Also, what size is your Nano really? They come in 4 gigs and 8 gigs, not 9 gigs. Is it really an 8 gig?

  • How to connect old 3rd gen firewire ipod to pc w/o firewire?

Just got out my ancient 3rd gen 20GB windows-formatted ipod and its Firewire Cable (6pins on each side). I charged it, and now can't figure out how to connect it to my pc. I don't have any kind of dock - only the 6pin firewire cable (identical on each end).

OK - just figured out that this is a 2nd generation ipod (20GB). It has a firewire port at the top with a cover over it. I just got off the phone with Apple Tech support and they suggested I try the forums, etc. They didn't know how to connect this ipod to a USB port. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Who has successfully made a phone call on 3rd gen/8G ipod touch?

If it works then I'll buy a earphone with mic and remote. Thanks!

It works, as long as you have the 3.1.1 software (which you should since you have a 3rd gen).

  • 2nd Gen iPod fit the dock connector of of 3rd Gen Color iPod?

So I have a 2nd Gen iPod (4 round buttons) dock connector 40GB and want to get the new universal dock with the IR sensory so I can control it with the remote. In the description of the new dock it says it is compatible with my model but doesn't say it comes with that particular dock apdapter. However it says that it does come with a the dock adapter for the 40GB color display. My question is does mine have the same physical dimensions as the 40GB color display model? And so will it fit into the dock adaptors that come with the dock or do I need to get some additional adaptor? I thought that they were identical in size, though on Apples "Identifying different iPod models" page it doesn't list the physical dimensions of them. If anyone knows this that would be great.

    hi Zachary!
good lord. something appears to have gone horribly wrong with the footnoting on the Universal Dock KB doc:
    Learn about iPod Universal Dock
okay ... here's what i think is going on.
it's saying that five different adapters come with the dock.
five of the adapters listed in the table have little superscript "1"s next to them (adapters 3-7).
the first of those two "bullet point" notes below the table says "Included with the iPod Universal Dock".
sooooooo ... my thought is that the five adapters you get with the dock are adapters 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
but your 40G four-round-button ipod is a dock connector ipod according to this document:
    Identifying different iPod models
which i think, according to the table on the Universal Dock page, means that you need a number 2 adapter, and so you're going to have to get an additional three pack of adapters for it.
... that all sounds plausible, but i'd prefer it if someone with both a universal dock and a 40GB dock connector ipod could actually tell us which adapter they have to use ...
    love, b

  • 3rd Gen 40GB iPod click-wheel is seen by windows, but not Mac

I just dusted off my old iPod after nearly a year of no use and coulfn't get it to be seen on my MacBook Air with iTunes 7.7. I tried it on my homebuilt PC running Win XP with iTunes 7.7 and it mounted just fine. I did a software update on it, plugged it in overnight to give it a full charge, then tried it on the Mac again. Still no dice. No crash or hang, just as if it didn't exist. But it (the Mac & iTunes)see my wife's and my iPhone just fine. I double-checked and it still shows up and works normally on the PC. I don't want to do a reset if I can avoid, as I have some music on the iPod that isn't on the Mac. It is on the PC, but, it's a hassle to get it across.

I have a similar problem. I have not used my iPod in a few years. I recently bought a mac. The iPod syncs fine on the windows, but is completely unrecognized by my MacBook Air. I had to buy a USB connector because my iPod had only a firewire cable. Perhaps that's the issue? Disk Utility doe not recognize it. ITunes does not recognize it. In disk mode the screen still reads "OK to disconnect" after I plug it in. Any ideas? (I followed the Rs on the Windows where it's working fine...)
I am abandoning my PC altogether and I am becoming addicted to podcasts. Getting this to work with my MacBook Air would satisfy my new addiction.
    Thanks,
    T

  • 3rd gen 20GB iPod not being detected / freezing computer

One day I plugged in my iPod before I left for work so it would charge, and when I came back it was still stuck on the do not disconnect screen. This was before I knew you could reset the iPod with the select/menu buttons, so I just left it for a bit. Then I went on here to figure out how to reset it, did it, then there was the corrupted file error.
Ever since then, whenever I plug the iPod into the computer, it basically freezes anything that the iPod is related to and stays at the do not disconnect screen. If I have My Computer open, it locks up, and after maybe 20 minutes, "Removable Disk" shows up, and when I right click it, it locks up for a long time again. If I restart with the iPod still plugged in, it freezes at the empty desktop without the start bar even loaded until I unplug it.
I have tried 4 of the 5 R's MANY MANY times. I've been trying to restore many times too, but when I load the updater, it freezes as well, and eventually says could not mount iPod. I have tried uninstalling the drivers for the device, only to have it re install them and have the exact same problem. I have tried loading the iPod on my sisters computer but it froze as well. I have tried different USB ports, and different cables. I have no idea what to do. I don't care if I lose everything, if that's what it takes just to be able to use it again (I have all the songs on my computer), but like I said, I can't even restore it.
Oh, I also tried configuring it as if it was the first time using the iPod, and it froze as well.
      Windows XP

I forgot to add that it heats up when it's frozen, connected to the computer.
And also, when I try to play music, it plays a random amount of the song. Just randomly in the middle of the song, or even 10 seconds in, it freezes for like 30 seconds then goes to the next song. I haven't found one working song yet. And yes, it is random, I have heard like 2 minutes of a song thats only worked for 10 seconds previously, so obviously the data is still obtainable, I don't know why it isn't working.
