CONSTANT "RESTART COMPUTER REQUIRED" SYSTEM CRASH!

NEED HELP! I have never used this discussion - needing to get some help. Ever since I upgraded my PowerMac G4 from latest version of Tiger to OS X Leopard I've been having trouble. My most serious problem just krept up with a tinted window I have never before seen indicating a system crash with a window that says "Restart Required." I noticed this first about two weeks ago but it began to occur once every one or two days. This morning it is not even letting me do any computing. I booted the computer from the Install disk and ran Repair/Verify but it indicated that all was good. I tried resetting the PRAM to no effect. I don't have Dr. Symantec installed anymore and am at a loss on what to do. I did the recent upgrade to 10.5.3 thinking that might help but it did not. All my other Apple software applications updates are good. Can anyone help me with this?

nah, that doesn't sound too swell. i can't recall if when you upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, if it would create a Previous Systems folder and save your Tiger OS and old iLife apps. seems like it would since you have a folder named such - though that could've come from your Tiger days - if you've ever archive/installed. anyway, an upgrade or archive/install will never save user account files in the Previous Systems folders. so, if you can't turn those files up anywhere, they're likely long gone. i've never seen file loss during an install, so it's weird that you would've lost stuff - unless something went wonky during the installation, or if your hard drive has some intermittent issues. some folks are confused about how iPhoto and iTunes stores and/or copies files - perhaps they're just hiding out somewhere on your system.

  • Attempting to open Firefox freezes computer, requiring system shutdown via On/Off button. Opening FF in Safe Mode doesn't help anything.

I was using Firefox just fine as I have been for years, and when I tried to open it today after restarting the machine, it froze the computer almost completely (mouse works, but clicking it anywhere does nothing and ctrl + alt + del does not work). Sometimes even the mouse ceases to work. The only way to react to this is to shut down the system by cutting the energy (On/Off button) as I have waited up to 5 minutes and the system does not recover.
I have tried opening the Safe Mode dialog box (start -> run -> firefox -safe-mode) and choosing the options to disable extensions and toolbars and "reset user preferences to FF defaults" and click "apply and restart" and the computer freezes. If I hit the "continue with Safe Mode" button instead, I get to see the FF screen with a blank tab on it but the computer freezes as well.
I am completely baffled by this sudden problem. I am having to type this from Google Chrome and thus I cannot supply troubleshooting information, sadly. I am sure it is not conflict with antiviruses because I have not installed any new firewalls or antiviruses before the problem started.
I tried downloading Firefox 8.0 and installing it (was previously on 7.0) but it didn't help at all. I also tried running FF with Windows on Safe Mode, but the freeze still happens.
Please help me, my life depends on ReminderFox reminding me of stuff and now I can't access it :,-(. I need FF back ASAP!
    Thanks a whole lot!
'''Addendum:''' The freeze is also happening at random even without opening Firefox, it has a chance of happening when I click something. My computer has frozen when I: 1- clicked the "reveal desktop" button to minimize all windows; 2- Attempted to close a tab in Chrome; 3- Clicked "play" in a Youtube video that had been loaded and waiting for some time). It will also almost always freeze when I leave it idle for more than about 10 minutes.
But it will '''guaranteedly''' freeze when trying to open FF, which doesn't happen with any other program.
I think my computer is breaking down. :(

  • Restart computer after EVERY crash????

I heard or read somewhere that its BEST to restart the pc after a crash or the problem may just lurk there....this helps most of the time but again is Very frustrating......Here's another question it was said to look at nVidia - I have the GeForce 7500LE - are they any known problems with this one?  It's been 2 months of work on and off to get a 25 minute, 100 photo slide show put together with transitions, music and titles.....on a bad day (lots of crashes) I leave the project alone for a day or so (to rest)  but I had envisioned loading the pictures with automatic cross dissolve and tweaking a few transitions and adding titles and music and expecting it to take but a day or so....would a dedicated pc striped to the bones and even without internet acess do the trick....I'm grabbing at straws.  Remember I'm a novice about pcs so just finding the specs can take me awhile......I thought the PrElements was for someone like me.

    Taxi Mom,
Unfortunately, you've posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. Maybe Steve will move it out to the main forum, where many more people will see your post, and help you.
In the meantime, it sounds like you've possibly got a few issues going on.
For crashes, take a look at this ARTICLE. It might help you gather "clues" as to what is happening, and maybe even point out the problem.
This ARTICLE will give you some tips on getting a computer ready for an editing session.
Last, let's talk about your still images. What size are they? For a DVD Project, the rec. is for no larger than 1000x750 pixels. This ARTICLE will give you tips on resizing, if necessary.
Hope that some of this helps,

  • Have new ipad2 1st time setup sync etc went without a hitch. Now whole system crashes

Now every time I connect the ipad to the computer the system crashes.  I get a long message starting with windows shutting down to prevent damage to computer.  Have followed procedures like system restore to the date before 1st sync, opend in safe mode, checked bios for updates etc but none of these actions have stopped the system crashing.  What can I do now?

I'd make appointment with Apple genius and detail everything that you have done, the error message you are getting and the crash.  It might be more than you'll find a solution for here.

  • When i try to load certain page, the system crashed and the bottom panel states " stopped" but when I close and open firefox again,it can't and I get this message that says my firefox is still running and to open the browser i need to restart the compu

while browsing suddenly the system crashed and the bottom panel says " stopped".When closed and re-opened, I got a prompt that says firefox is still running and i have to close to open again or have to restart the computer but it doesn't work
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == just happened

You get message "firefox is still running" and computer restart doesn't help you. Try the advice below.
Make sure Firefox isn't running (end firefox.exe process in Task Manager or restart computer)
    Find your profile folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default
find file "parent.lock" in it and delete it (the file is empty, its function is to signify to Firefox whether it's already open or not).
Then try to open Firefox again. Will it start or not? What will it say?

  • Stop requiring system restart after update

I turn on my machine. Acrobat says there's an update available. I let it update. Then I get a dialog saying:
"You must restart the system before using Acrobat. Click Restart Now to restart automatically".
Come on! It's 2010... Requiring system restart after update is sooo 1990's...
Or put another way, I cannot remember when another app required system restart after updating. Only Acrobat does this nowadays. Please, stop this madness!

While Adobe doesn't deliberately try to annoy users,
it does not deliberately try to remove documented annoyances either.
There are still bugs in Acrobat 9 which have been documented for years, and no one seems interested to fix them.
Serious flaws ... like crashes and corruption of PDF files so they cannot be saved.  Hours of work lost.
Every 3rd time I select the Crop icon, I can expect Acrobat 9.4.5 to crash.
There is no excuse for an app to require full reboot on update.   C'mon, spend some time at
Microsoft Tech Support and figure it out.   Acrobat is also the last application I can remember
    requiring reboot.
I turn off Auto Update on both Acrobat and Windows.

  • System crashes when put to sleep or restart

My system crashes when put to sleep or when I click re-start. This also happens when applications start and need to take over the entire screen. Once it crashes, I cannot start the computer for approx 5 minutes. I cannot re-start in safe mode because it also crashes. I cannot start with the application disc because the dvd drive pops open when I start the system. I have tried shutting the system down from the menu bar and the screen exits to the desktop window, but doesn't shut off. I have used disc utility to repair permissions and have re-set the pram, but the problem remains. I have a G4 gigabit/ethernet, running OSX 10.4.11, with an Apple Studio Display and ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. This has been going on for a while - I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM). Please advise. Thank you.

I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM).
The absolute first step in troubleshooting is to remove the recently added RAM.
That will remove question regarding the RAM.
Have you tried a Safe Mode boot (hold Shift while booting)?
This will allow for automatic system repairs. While in safe mode, does the sleep function work?
From Safe mode, does the restart function work?
If after removing the RAM, and after Safe mode, the problem persists, a PMU reset may be worth trying.
The PMU controls all power functions, sleep and shut down and start. Corruption in the PMU will cause problems with these functions, and a reset will clear this up if the PMU is the root cause.

I have been using Lightroom 4.4 successfully for over 2 years.  Just tried to import some new photos after a vacation and the application crashes when I click "import" every time.  Tried restarting computer.  Version says it is up to date.
How do I get formal support for this from Adobe?

Thanks for the response.  The application was crashing.  A Windows message was displayed showing "Lightroom.exe has stopped working", "Windows can check online for a solution the problem.". Etc.
I just launched Lightroom to check the exact message for this reply - and the Import worked.  It had failed dozens of times before.

  • Whenever IE tries to open, Firefox crashes, and cannot be reopened unti I restart the entire system.

Whenever I click on something that brings up IE (not the default!), Firefox crashes, and when I try to reopen it, a screen comes up that is supposed to let me reopen it, but it won't. I have to reboot the system in order to bring up Firefox again. Is there some trick to restarting Firefox after this crash?

Go to the address '''about:crashes''' and tell us your latest crash IDs. We can then look at the data specific to your crash and have a better idea of what is causing the problem.

In the password file I set the password of the os
user oracle which owns installation. The Password for the password file is supposed to be the SYS password and not OS User oracle which owns installation.
I do not think the Oracle OS user password change is the problem. When you alter SYS password using the alter user command, it should change the password file automatically.
    Try
SVRMGR> connect sys/sys_password as see whether it works. If it does not, then check other issues.

  • Downloaded firefox to new windows 7 computer and system would not restart, windows repair deleted firefox to fix the problem

When in started my new windows 7 computer I loaded office and a couple of other programs that I wanted. I then tried to download firefox. When I restarted the computer the system startup failed and all the windows options to repair or open in safe mode failed. I reloaded windows 7 and didn't load any other software then tried to download firefox and the restart failed. However, windows repair did a fix and I was able to restart but noticed that windows had deleted firefox. What is going on and how do I get firefox to load without causing problems?

What likely happened is Windows did a System Restore, which removed Firefox and everything that had been installed after.
Try starting up Windows, install Firefox. Then Restart, then install everything else one at a time. If Windows fails to start up after one install, you know that's the problem.

  • Constant system crashing

    Hi-
I've been a proud owner of an iMac for the past 3 years. For the last 6months+, we have had constant problems with our iMac crashing. Basically, we are in the middle of doing something (or have even stepped away) and the system hangs with no response. Sometimes the current screen is just frozen. Other times, it gives a nice striped pattern across the whole screen. There's no reaction from the system at all. The only route is to do a hard reset of the system. The crashing is completely random from what we can tell, occurring once in two days or three times in one day. It's never consistent in terms of the applications we're running or what we're doing at the time. Each time, the circumstances are different.
I believe the instability started a bit with Snow Leopard installation, but I'm not 100% sure. But in the beginning, it was once in a week it happened.
At this point, I'm basically at a loss what to do without doing a complete reinstall of the system. Here's the troubleshooting I've done so far:
    - I've verified and repaired disk permissions. I've verified the Disk itself.
    - I've tried leaving USB devices unplugged.
    - I've done a system scan via the bootdisk of the memory for any defects.
    - I've done a complete clean-up of the permissions, cache, logs, etc. via Yasu. After this clean-up, we actually had a 2-3 day period without crashed, but then it started again!
    - I've examined the logs via the Console and System logs. I see errors but no pattern tied with the time of the crashes, e.g. the same error messages from a particular application.
    - I'm of course fully up-to-date with all Apple Software Updates.
Hoping someone can shed some light or simply confirm that I give up and reinstall everything from scratch. I'm exhausted with the crashing at this point...
I can post logs if helpful. Here's the specs on the iMac:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Thanks,
    Joseph

Vents: talking about graphic card mostly, maybe iMac has air vents also, that can get clogged?
Every FREEZE or crash can = corrupt drive directory.
    Heat is a primary kill-joy
For my $$ Alsoft Disk Warrior is a must, finding bad blocks is not something that Disk Utility really does - at all. SoftRAID $149 does and has SSD suport. Drive Genius 3 was reviewed today on MacFixit.
I consider iDefrag a very optional iffy add-on but useful in some situations, like making for contiguous free space to setup Windows partition.
AHT is also not going to give or find memory errors, it can detect some problems with DIMMs not functioning properly, but you would need to do an extensive test with Memtest.
I don't use or rely on or trust those Onyx type maintenance programs. YMMV but you can do better for $29 and SuperDuper (bootable backup clone software that simply skips copying temp files, logs and caches that are best created from scratch.
Too many "cooks" can spoil the brew.
From 10 yrs of using Alsoft Disk Warrior, and check the feedback reports on MacIntouch, don't leave home without, or rely on just Apple DU First Aid (or anything that is simply using the same diskutil fsck routine).
    What I would do:
Clone with SD and run Disk WArrior on the clone.
Reinitialize your internal drive while booted from the SD clone external, with zero all option.
    Restore.
    Run Disk Warrior again.
    Boot from your internal drive.
That is your best bet other than a new drive or finding all the errors are USB devices and cosmic rays. And, you get a good solid bootable backup recovery routine that supplements and improves on just having TimeMachine.
