Constant static

I've been recording on Garage Band using the built in mic and a pair of headphones plugged into the jack. Everything was fine until 8/18 - when I opened GB and tried to record I got some terrible static. It was similar to the static I got when the Mac was running on battery power - but then I simply plugged it in and the static went away. Now it is constant. I don't have any third party hardware or anything except for the headphones, which I was using before without any problems. Nothing has has changed with regard to the electricity supply at my house, and I've tried plugging in to multiple outlets.
Also, the fan seems to have been coming on more often...I'd say after less than a minute of recording. Any suggestions?

No I haven't. What other program would you suggest using? I would try to use iMovie, but I can't open it since I don't have Quartz...which I assume is because I have had to abort and safe boot the last five update attempts...it gets stuck on configuring installation for hours at a time. ...but that's another issue altogether.
Do you have any suggestions about what program I could record on to check for static?

  • Why do I have constant static on one tv and now the land line has the same thing

    I have had static on one tv for I forget how long. The tv is on  the highest volume possible and some stations you can hear and others have a constant buzzing sound. Now the land line has a constant static as well. Granted the land line is an old fashioned push button phone but it has been fine for two years now. I have a smart phone and never bothered to get a cordless, but this should have nothing to do iwth the static I now have on the land line. The tv could be the speakers but why is it different from channel to channel. Paying what we all pay, our land lines, internet and cable should be working properly.

       On that TV that's low, try this:
    To control the speaker volume of the motorola box itself:
    1) Press and hold the AT&T button on the remote
    2) Press the "OK" button and release it and the AT&T key at the same time.  All the universal lights will flash twice.
    3) Type 955.  The AT&T key will flash twice
    4) Press "Enter"
    Now you can turn your motorola box all the way up. Once you get it set how you want, we need to set the remote back to control the TV volume instead of the motorola box.  To do that:
    1) Press and hold the AT&T button on the remote
    2) Press the "OK" button and release it and the AT&T key at the same time.  All the universal lights will flash twice.
    3) Type 955.  The AT&T key will flash twice
    4) Press "TV".  The TV light will flash twice
    All of this is assuming that the TV button on your remote is already programmed to control your TV.
    Good luck
    Chris

  • Const static NSDictionary

    I have to use this long dictionary of constants in my app. I decided to save on the CPU time and place it in its own class method as a static const variable, but for some reason it produces this error:
    {quote}
    error: initializer element is not constant
    {quote}
    +(const NSDictionary*)getNamesDictionary
    const static NSDictionary* dic = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjects:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:
    @"value1",
    //Very long list of values
    nil] forKeys:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:
    @"key1",
    //Very long list of keys
    nil]];
    return dic;
    Can someone suggest how to remedy this?

    Ooops, sorry Den. I just pasted your initialization code without thinking We don't want to use the convenience method to create the dictionary without retaining it:
    static NSDictionary* dic = nil;
    + (NSDictionary*)getNamesDictionary {
    if (dic == nil)
    dic = [[NSDictionary alloc] initWithObjects:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:
    @"value1",
    //Very long list of values
    nil] forKeys:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:
    @"key1",
    //Very long list of keys
    nil]];
    return dic;
    As shown, you might also consider moving the static declaration out of the method so dic can be released in the dealloc method.

  • Constant static through headphone jack

    Playing audio through the Mac's own speakers - no problem, but audio through the headphone jack = irritating static / whitenoise as well as the audio, the right side worse than the left.
    I tried with a number of different headphones and speakers through the jack, which showed that the problem wasn't the headphones. This is an 18 month old iMac.
    When I took the Mac to an authorised repairer to get the optical drive replaced recently, I reported the problem with the headphone jack, and they replaced the wire between the motherboard and the jack thinking that would fix the issue, but it hasn't. They suggest replacing the whole motherboard (for a further outrageous cost (I'm no loner in a warranty period)). An earlier discussion in the community thought the problem could be resolved with a grounding adpater on the power cord, but in Australia we don't have that problem because all power is grounded.
    Any advice on what exactly the problem is? The repairers couldn't say, but I note that a number of people have reported this issue but not posted any successful fixes. Any suggestions?

    you could also try a reset.
    PUSH AND HOLD the middle button and the menu button AT THE SAME TIME for 10 seconds.. this may take a few trys and it works best if hooked to power..
    you could also try a restore but if you do backup your information because it will erase your ipod

  • Workaround and possible solution to CONSTANT STATIC

    The workaround is disabling your driver then re-enabling it.
    Go to control panel->sound
    Click speakers, properties
    Click properties next to X-fi logo
    If windows security is on, click change settings, continue
    Click driver tab
    Click disable, wait while windows disables your sound card
    Click enable
    I can not confirm the solution, but turning off the windows startup sound seems to have worked for me.
    Go to control panel->sound
    Click sounds tab
    uncheck "Play Windows Startup sound"
    Someone please test this to confirm if this works or not.

    Well, after a couple days of playing games on the computer, another problem showed itself. Occasionally, when I would boot, the sound wouldn't work at all and I would get strange intermittent static sounds from my speakers.
    My new fix that has worked every time for me is to make sure my speakers are ON when I turn on the computer. If I forget, I get intermittent static and I have to reboot.

  • Nokia Lumia 710 Earphone Jack - Constant Static/Wh...

    Hello everyone,
    I have noticed, with a majority ofNokia devices that there is a static noise in the background when the sound card of the device is activated. I wish to seek a fix because I use in ear earphones and it gets really annoying having to put up with the noise when I use in ear earphones to block out noise. Is there an easy fix and/or explanation for this?
    Kind regards,
    Kenneth

    No, not hardware. My Lumia 710 is working fine.
    Try see if the audio port is clean. If it isn't, you can try clean it again (Not with a tissue or water).
    If it still doesn't work well, try use your headphones on the other phone. If it doesn't work, you can bring it on Nokia Care to ask for a replacement (On warranty).
    If I have helped you in any way, give me a kudos!

  • Query Issue with adding a static value

    I have written a query in SAP that works the way I need it to. I am going to schedule it so that SAP does a file transfer of the output to another area where the data will be accumulated.
    My problem is that I want the name of the system to appear at the end of each line but it is not in any table I can find to match up with the userid.
    EX:
    UserID        Group                          System
    JDOE         HR Query Group            P201
    The field for system is not in any tables but I want to add it and give it a constant/static value all the time in the output.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Justin Dauby -- SAP Security Analyst
    Kimball International Inc.,

    The name of the system is not in a table, but rather a structure called SYST. You can evaluate it using the system field sy-sysid.
    Another option is to call function module RFC_SYSTEM_INFO. The export parameter RFCSI_EXPORT will deliver the system id from component RFCSYSID of the structure RFCSI.

  • Constants

    Hello there!
    Just want to ask is it possible to use directly the constants of any class.
    Let's say, in my class i want to use ERROR_MESSAGE and not JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE
    My code will not compile even if I import the JOptionPane class.
    Thanks and thnx much

    tnx both of you, and please dont fight about this thread. My apologies to you flounder if you find my question vague enough.
    Tnx ejp for your easy understanding of my question.
    By the way, this is the set-up of my code.
    if have my package, let's call it mypackage.
    mypackage contains three class
    MyPackageConstants.class // contains all the constants (static final declarations) used by this package
    MyFirstClass.class // uses MyPackageConstants' final variables
    MySecondClass.class // uses MyPackageConstants' final variables
    My only problem is that MyPackageConstants is too long for me to type every time i access a static variable, say for instance
    in MyFirstClass.class i used this
    package mypackage;
    public class MyFirstClass {
    public MyFirstClass() {
    System.out.println( MyPackageConstants.DETAILED_MESSAGE ); //here, i only want to use DETAILED_MESSAGE
    this is the case... well anyways, i think ejp has already answered my question, so i guess i have to import all the constants...
    tnx all...

  • Initialization of the static variable

    When does it happening; Is it happening during the compilation time or when the class is loaded or when the first instance of the class is created?
    can't find it anywhere in docs

    There's one common gotcha with static fields. Compile and run this code:
    public class One {
        public static final int CONSTANT = 17;
    public class Two {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            System.out.println(One.CONSTANT);
    }You get the output 17 -- no surprise. Now edit One.java and change that value to 42, say, and
    carefully only recompile One.java. (You may not want to do this
    in an overly helpful IDE!) When you run Two again, you will still see 17!
    To avoid this, you can use a static initializer:
    public class One {
        public static final int CONSTANT;
        static {
            CONSTANT = 42;
    }

  • Static recording macbook issue

    Can anybody help?
    I have constant static when recording on logic pro. Here's what i've done so far. Apple also want to charge me 85 pounds to have a look and they cant even guarantee results!
    I thought it was my external soundcard (alesis multimix) so i changed this for a motu audio express - it is still happening (even more frustrating that i changed hardware for nothing)
    I've swapped all wires and changed USB ports.
    Even with no instrument in and if you merely hit record a static will come through. The static is extremely loud and you cant even hear anything being recorded.
    I've updated all drivers. There are some notes that it could be a grounding issue?
    Does anybody have any advice? It has worked previously in the past, albeit some months ago. And I have not moved any of the hardware around.
    Thanks in advance
    Dec

    1- no the  VM can have any IP addressing, there are completely independent.
    If that were true, and I'm not arguing it's false, then what I'm trying to do should work perfectly.
    2- when the VM is on dhcp, try to put the same configuration to static and give us the results
    I don't know if I understand your request perfectly, but I'll try to answer it.
    When the VM is using DHCP, it functions perfectly.
    If I simply take the settings provided by DHCP and use them statically, it functions perfectly.
    When I take an address/subnet/gateway combination supplied by my ISP, it fails.  I can't ping the gateway, let alone ping the DNS or resolve names or ping anything else.
    Note:  I know the address/subnet/gateway combination is good since if I use it on the independent adapter, it works like a charm.
    I assumed what you said in #1 above to be true.  However, if it is, and since I know the VM's networking is working (since both DHCP and static work), I'm even more confused why it doesn't work with the actual static IP information that I need to use.
    Brad.

  • Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS - static no

    Hi,
    I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS soundcard in my Dell Dimension 4700 computer. Recently I started getting a lot of static - like rice crispies crackling.
    It would go away sometimes after powering down, but come back after a few hours. After reading some of the posts here I tried moving the card further away from the video card. This seems to allow me to run longer without the static - a few days was my last try. But the static did come back and I had to power down to get rid of it. Now I am static free for several hours, but I think it will be back. I can't move the card any further away now - it is in the last slot. I'd appreciate any feedback on ways to fix my problem and what exactly my problem is. I don't really understand what is causing the static. Thanks in advance,Steve

    I have the same card -- and the same problem -- in my Dell XPS Gen 3 system.
    Two weeks ago, I started getting constant static though my speakers. I didn't know what the source of the problem was and, since I have a year left on my warranty, I called Dell tech support. I subsequently embarked on a two-week troubleshooting nightmare which involved all sorts of fun stuff including:
    A system restore (rolling everything back to factory settings and having to reinstall everything)which did not solve the problem
    Determination that I had faulty speakers (which turned out not to be the case after the speakers were replace with brand new ones)
    Complete reformatting of my hard dri've and a full reinstall of the operating system (Windows XP Professional (turns out the XP professional disk I got with my computer actually contained XP Home, so I am looking forward to another round of reinstalling the OS once Dell ships me the proper software). The reinstall did not solve the problem.
    The Dell people finally had me relocate my computer and 6-piece speaker system to another room (to see if an electrical source was causing the static). Static was still there.
    They finally determined that the problem was in the Creative sound card, even though their diagnostics gave it a clean bill of health. My guess is that one of the input jacks developed a bad connection with the card after 2 years of use.
    I have not yet received the replacement sound card. I'm crossing my fingers that when the new one arri'ves, the static problem will disappear.
    So if you work through Dell tech support, do yourself a favor and cite my problem. It may save you hours and hours and hours of frustrating troubleshooting.
    To be fair, I have to say that the various Dell tech reps I worked with were very thorough, polite, and accommodating. They did things by the book, which is really the only way to approach a mystery problem like the one I'm having.
    The downside is, during the past two weeks, I've spent more time trying to get my computer back in shape than I've spent working (I'm self-employed). But it was also a learning experience and I now know a lot more about computers than I did before.
    I hope you get your sound card problem solved quickly with less pain and suffering than I went though.

  • Strange static noise

    I recently acquired a 17" G4 iMac, which seems to work very well. When I first got it the OS install was hosed so I wrote zeros to the drive and installed 10.4. After the install, everything functioned normally with the exception of a constant static, buzzing sound.
    Occasionally it would go away for a period of time and then come back. It's one of those strange types of electrical noises that not everybody can hear. I've read so many discussions on these forums about noises that my eyes started to bleed and nobody seems to be having the same problem.
    I replaced the HD about 2 weeks ago and ever since then the noise is quieter and not as constant, but it is still there. I'm concerned that it is related somehow to the graphics card because anytime I open a graphics intensive program (such as google earth or my dashboard) it makes the noise.
    Any ideas?
    17" iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    My first thought, is that you might be hearing a cooling fan.
    This idea is supported by the fact that you say it gets louder when loading graphically intensive apps. And, that the noise changed when you replaced the hard drive.
    Now, that may not sound right at first, but here is my way of thinking:
    The more intensive apps are going to demand more of the CPU. The more the CPU is taxed, the hotter it gets. The hotter it gets, the faster the fan spins.
    My thought, is that the fan may be dirty. So, that could cause it's sound to be less smooth, and a little noisier.
    Now, what's that got to do with the hard drive?
    Well, you may have knocked some dust off of it while you were replacing the hard drive.
    I'd go ahead and open the computer back up, and see if you can locate the fan.
    Take some compressed air (low pressure such as canned compressed air), and blow away any dust you find in the system. Especially on the fan blades.
    I haven't been inside one of the G4 iMacs. So, I cannot say for certain if there is more than one fan.
    But, if I had to guess, I would speculate that you are hearing fan noise.
    If the fans are the cause of the sound, and cleaning them doesn't remove the noise, then I would consider replacing them.
    Sometimes the bearings wear out, and they'll get a little noisier.
    But, with any luck, you'll find that cleaning the dust off the fan blades will restore a smooth sound.

  • Static Distortion in HS-1000 headphones

    I recently purchased a HS-1000 headset, and after the cd failed to install anything for some reason, I simply downloaded the necessary drivers for the headset. The first time I used it, it sounded great. However, the next time I used the headset it had a constant static-like sound distortion. I tried reinstalling the drivers, getting the necessary firmware updates (I have vista 32-bit), and even downloaded the update for the creative entertainment console. Initially, the first time after updating the firmware the headphones worked fine. But then the second I used them after updating it went right back to having distortion again. I even tried disabling my wireless card, but that did nothing.
    Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated, as I really like this headset and would love to make it work.

    I have also been following that thread having problem with my headset as well. Just so sad that creative has not responded to help us who have problems with this product. Customer service is also the same. Hopefully in time they will respond.
