Constantly losing index

After upgrading to 10.8.4 (now 10.8.5) I find that Spotlight will not find files that I know exist. When I perform a Reindex operation, the files reappear for awhile, then disappear again until I again reindex. I find myself reindexing 2 or 3 times a day.
Anyone have any similar problem?
A fix?
Thanks!
Jon

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender mdworker -o -k Sender mds | grep -v boxd | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

Grrrrr.....makes me miss my stupid PC set up as I could force it to do what I want!
Intermittent connection screws up Netflix, VOIP phone, Amazon, Streaming music via Spotify/Pandora, general internet access.....whole family is ****** off.
    Any tips/tricks/ideas???

Downgrade firmware to 7.6.1 .. as the latest is just lousy.
It is easy to downgrade.. hold down the option key whilst you click the version number. in Macs.. lots of stuff is hidden behind an option key.
I also strongly recommend a factory reset and use all SMB names.. not apple type names..
    ie TC name.. TCgen4
Wireless name TCwifi (or give names to both bands.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz).
That helps all the non-apple part of the world.. connect.
Also Mavericks has now changed over to SMB as well. So even Mac is now windows networking.
Generally these two things. .7.6.1 firmware and SMB names will fix it.. if not post again as is another step that is possible.. controlling the WAN speed of the TC.

  • P2/MXF Footage in Premiere Pro CS6 constantly losing its linkage.

P2/MXF Footage in CS6 constantly losing its linkage.  I'll relink the clips as the 'locate footage' box pops up, then a couple of minutes later, all the clips in the bin are showing the question mark and asking me to locate the clips again. It does this over and over.  This happens on both my desktop machine and on my laptop.
Not having this problem with any of the file types at this point.

Just saw an official reply on another similar question asked at the same time as mine and that Adobe is aware of it and it's being worked on.
    Thanks.

my i pad is constantly losing wifi.  the other desktops and laptops in house but it happens on my iphone as well but not as often.  i have to keep renewing all the tihelp please.
    thanks

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • HT4623 Constantly losing cellular service!

Using Iphone 5C and constantly losing cellular service.  Just had new sim card installed this morning and still having issues.  Anyone else experiencing this?  Phone is brand new.

    Hello jdoersom,
Congratulations on your new iPhone 5c, and thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with cellular service.  You have already taken some good troubleshooting steps to address the issue, and I recommend continuing with the following steps (you can skip any steps you have already taken):
Follow the instructions below for assistance with troubleshooting cellular data issues on your iPhone. After performing each step, please test to see if the issue is resolved.
Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings, turn airplane mode on, wait three seconds, and then turn off again.
    Restart your iPhone.
Ensure that your software is up to date:
Check for a Carrier Settings Update. Tap Settings > General > About.
Check for an iOS Software Update. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
Remove the SIM Card and reinsert it. Allow the iPhone to acquire the network again.
If your SIM card has SIM PIN enabled, try toggling it off: Tap Settings > Phone > SIM PIN.
Try another location. If a different location works, but the original location still does not, contact your carrierto report the issue.
Reset network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Restore the iPhone as new.
    Contact your carrier to:
Verify that the iPhone is properly set up on the account with the appropriate, current data plan.
Verify that there are no account-related blocks.
Find out if there are specific error messages in the carrier logs that could help determine why the issue is occurring.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, contact your carrier, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, or contact AppleCare to troubleshoot further.

  • Wireless N WRT300, Constantly Losing Connection

This router Constantly loses the internet connection, and I am HARD WIRED to this router, is this not somthing they should have mastered Ages ago?
The wireless signal is Weak and constantly loses it's connection.
I've tried calling them to fix it, I've changed the MTU, from 1500, to 1400, to 1300 etc, etc, I 've also set it to auto.... nothing.
Every so often the internet connection Drops, the only way to fix it, is to Unplug the router and plug it back in. Soon as this is done the internet works instantly again. I can see the wireless being buggy, but NOT the hardwire, there is NO excuse for this.
And to boot I just love how bestbuy wont allow any exchanges on this type of hardware, And cannot return it, and I cannot exchange it for a different router. I can only echange it for the exact same make and model of router.
Message Edited by curtisbouvier on 11-16-200603:06 AM

I also have the wrt300N router. I am losing connection all the time either wirelessly or wired. When the router works it is blazing fast, but every 2-5 minutes it just HANGS which is REALLY ANNOYING!
I have updated the firmware. This happens on my wired XP machine, my wireless XP, or on my apple laptop. It is not the computers becuase my old wireless router (linksys i forget the number, but it was a b system at least 4-5 years old) did not have this issue....
I saw on some threads that port forwarding may help? Is this a solution? Anyone have any ideas? Clearly by reading the posts this is not an isolated problem....

  • Canon Pixma 922 constantly losing network connection

I own a Canon Pixma 922 and from the very start I have been having issues with the netrworking staying connected.
My network is a simple 3 computer connected to a D-link 655 router with WPS abilities.
before this printer I had a very similar, older model. I set that up once, after purchase and until it finally gave up the ghost it remained connected solidly to all the computers in the house, including laptops that connected once a month if that. Power went out several times and it remained reliably connected.
The new Pixma 922 instead disconnects from the network several times a day. The record so far has been 3 whole days without the need to reset it. Otherwise the moment we try to print and the print job is not running, we just go to the rpouter, press the WAP button and quickly reset the network. After that it will work reliably for a few hours until the next time (usually later in the day).
I don;t need to point out how disappointed I am. For me it's rather easy to reset, but my wife is constantly aggraved by it (as if I designed it) and my daughter always forget how to do it and has to wait for me.
I have been unable to find similar posts to this one, so I assume it's not an endemic problem. But is there a way to fix it or at least troubleshoot it?

I have never experienced that, but I am not surprised.
in my case I am now able to print from  my win 64 PC, my Mac Mini, my wife's win 7/32bit laptop (which was really the huge headache for me) and from my toilet paper roll if I'd ever bother to connect it.
Compared to the hell we went through for more than a year, pressing the friggin button, reconnecting the printer twice or more a day. My router is, of course, in a corner where I have to climb over a desk and behind a shelving system just to press that silly button. Compared to that, this is heaven. It hasn't lost its connection since the day I switched.
My mistake was to assume that Canon changed the way connections worked and that this was the new way to do it. I didn't realize it was an additional "easy" (for whom, I wouldn't know) connection method.
I guess after keeping udated on JS, PHP, Phyton, HTML, HTML5, XHTML, CSS and CSS3, facebook, twitter, gmail, analytics, google this and that, and more, I had little brainpower left to really think about this.
I am just happy that it works. It seems like a minor miracle each time I print  something. I want to drop on my knees and shout Hallelujah! (and I have been an atheist for almost 50 years)
    Good luck to you all.

  • Wireless Keyboard Constantly Losing Connection

I have been having trouble with my wireless keyboard for awhile now. It constantly loses the connection to my iMac.

Similar problem here -- keyboard has brand new batteries. I go into System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Set up Wireless Keyboard. It shows the "searching" and wait cursor. If I hold the power button on the keyboard, the light will turn green, and then it will flash, and as it's flashing the computer will say "keyboard found". If I hit the "Continue" button in time, it will show 100% on the battery charge when it gets back to the main screen, but within 5-20 seconds the keyboard will disconnect, giving a "Connection lost" message

  • OS 10.9.2 upgrade - then constantly losing memory - and finally resolved it...

A few days ago, I upgraded to OS 10.9.2 (2011 17" 4-core i7 250GB SSD MBP) - and the following day noticed a dramatic drop in available HD memory.  I use FreeSpace to monitor my various HDs and only saw the issue when its value appeared red (<20%) in my upper icons.  Started dumping unwanted files (it was time for a clear-out!), but the available space still continued to fall.  That made no sense.  Closing down apps made no difference.  With nothing open, the memory level still continued to steadily drop.
Took it in to the Genius Bar the next day, where they re-installed 10.9.2 and sent me home to "see what happens now..."  Did a re-install using Time Machine (Migration Assistant).  Initially, all seemed fine, and then the available memory space started dropping again.  I turned off all apps, to see what would happen, but this issue continued.  Time Machine kept sending an error, as now did DuperDuper! which I use as a second back-up app (yes, I'm anal about backing up).  These responses were new.  Patently, something was seriously amiss.
Last night, I went to turn Time Machine off, not wanting or needing its error messages any longer - I had another appointment lined up at the Genius Bar for this morning, to try and resolve this losing-memory issue.  All apps were closed down.  It was only a minute or so after turning Time Machine off in System Preferences that I saw the FreeSpace indicator change from red to black and the available memory space spin back up to where it should be in less than a minute - an upward jump of around 50GB, for no apparent reason.  I turned Time Machine back on - just in case! - but nothing changed.  Memory level still back in the black.  It has remained so overnight and still sits there, as it used to.
So! - just putting this out there as a situational report, in case it can help anyone else.  I am not "techie" enough to know what happened or why - just sharing what I observed.  If it helps one other person, then that's good!!
    Happy Days!!

Thanks indeed for that fast response!!
Time Machine is still creating its first backup after I re-partitioned one of my external HDs last night, to give everything more space (another 8 hours to go, I gather), so I've yet to see what happens when it begins taking those "snapshots" again.  At least now I know where to look, to see what is taking up the space!
I also read a thread where the snapshots can be turned off using Terminal, and that may be a future option if TM is the actual culprit, as it appears.
Again, my thanks for your prompt response and advice.  Greatly appreciated.

  • Constantly losing focus away from code view in CS6 OSX

DW constantly loses focus away from the editing pane in code view, and instead seem to focus on another part of the interface.  Two big problems with this:
When I expect to still be in code view, and the first thing I do is hit Delete, DW wants to DELETE MY FILE - and worse, the confirmation pop-up is automatically focused on YES, so if I hit enter, the file is gone before I may even notice what happened...
I have to keep going back to my mouse and finding the exact line and spot in my code where I had my cursor (and can still see the cursor there, just not focused), and click to reclaim focus.
I've noticed this happens on several occasions:
When I do Command+S to save, and then Command+U to put, the put command focuses on the "Files" component of DW and does not return to code view like it should,
if I switch between apps with Command+TAB and then return to DW, again my focus is lost away from the code where my cursor still sits, but does not respond (again, it seems to think I am trying to manipulate the file, like delete it upon Delete key),
sometimes, complately randomly when I highlight something, same focus loss...
This is extremely annoying (on top of the already laggy and poorly designed custom chrome).
OSX 10.8.2 and latest DW CS6.
Anyone know how to fix this, or is this just another bug Adobe is ignoring?

So looks like Adobe released a DW update, yet this is still not fixed.
Unbelieveable how this is not a priority, along with optimizing the terrible UI experience (it has gone backwards in speed and funcionality from previous versions).
This is also not a problem on Windows, just OSX - which used to be Adobe's target market... time to find alternatives to CS.

  • When two Computers are online at the same time, constantly losing internet connection

I recently added a WRT160N router to my PC for a wireless Laptop elswhere in the house as well as adding a new network adapter card to my PC. When both the Laptop and the PC are online at the same time I am constantly getting booted offline and having to reset the connection, but when just the PC is on there are no prbloems and everything seems to work fine.
Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks in advance
    Andy

In this case i think you need to change some settings on your Router. Follow the steps below.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Constantly losing wifi

I figured I would join in the discussion. I am not techie, so I apologize. I am running an imac 24-inch Mid 2007 on 10.7.3. Always do the updates and everything seems ok. I have been having problems with connecting, reconnecting after sleep and just losing my connection in the middle of being on wifi. I have replaced my wireless router, I have deleted all previous wifi networks. I have also renewed my dhcp license. Nothing helps. To reconnect, I have to continuously go to network preferences, assist me, diagnostics, then continue with the assist me and choose my network and it then reconnects. This IS NOT just waking from sleep. Sometimes just randomly while working on the computer.
I have  read some things about equipment plugged in and I have an ATT micro cell plugged into 1 ethernet jack in my wireless router/modem, I also have a bluetooth mouse, a printer plugged in USB and a Lacie HD using Time machine. Please help with any suggestions on stopping this annoying  behavior. It is really frustrating and makes getting things done very time-consuming. HELP.

Make sure the time and date is correct on your Mac and update with Apple's time servers.
If your router is "hidden" you need to unhide it, it offers no security protection and causes the sleep and won't connect issue your describing.
If it's WEP encrypted that could be the problem, only WPA2(AES) is secure, with a good password.
After fixing the router, create a new Network Location, then connect to the Wifi and save the "guest internet" password in your keychain.

  • Constantly Losing Connection

I swapped a couple of weeks ago to BT Infinity hoping to have a speedier connection for myself and the family.  We got it up and running, with everyone on wifi and yes the speed is faster.  However we are finding that we are constantly having to disconnect and reconnect to the router as it keeps saying we have no connection even though the router is blue and the computer says signal strength is excellent.  Any advice before I start the dreaded phone calls to BT???

If router still connected to internet is your problem with your wireless devices?  are your wired connections working ok?

  • Constantly losing and rebooting airport express

Hi, I have an aiport express station that serves two g4 laptops, a printer, itunes and an intel desktop. When it works, it works fine, but I constantly (sometimes twice in one hour, often at least 3 times a day) lose my connection (disappears from the wireless network list on all computers) and I have to unplug and plug back in the airport express. That fixes it, but it's a pain.
Is this an ISP problem? Is something expiring too often and is there a way to fix it?
My airport is plugged into a linksys cable modem (have RCN service).

    heya dave,
haven't checked in on this for a bit... but seems like i came back just in time. maybe pour yourself a cup of coffee, and settle in for a read - i'll share a story with you.
i am on Rogers. when the problem started (the day i updated the firmware) i was using a Webstar high speed modem made by Scientific Atlanta. it had just been released by Rogers about a month or so before the problem started... the old modem worked fine, the Webstar worked right up until the firmware update - so i wouldn't be incline to buy into any line that it's the modem... it seems perfectly clear to me that it is/was the firmware.
i have recently changed over to the Portable Internet modem put out recently by Rogers. i am thinking it is also Scientific Atlanta, but i am too content with my connection/position on the sofa right now to check it...
i am using a MacBook Intel Core 2 - when i got it, i went a bit accessory crazy and went on several buying sprees for it. loved the idea of no longer being tied to the back rooms (where my cable comes in) so very quickly got an airport network set up. and loved the idea of Airtunes too - yup, both the express and the base station running. all worked great at first... don't remember when the Airtunes started doing the disappearing tunes trix, but from this forum i gather that was also after a firmware upgrade.
trying to putz around with that was a real treat. at one point the Express just seemed to decide it had had enough and took a couple of weeks vacation of malfunction - despite being told that the *factory settings hard reset* was infallible, for two weeks it absolutely refused to reset, despite my tring a couple of times every day. would have taken it back, but it conicided with a rush at my day-job... after downloading and printing (the base station still worked great at this point) enough paper for several first novels and hours going through it all - and coming to the same *do a facotry reset* option - i read a two- or three-paragraph reply in this forum (i think... it may have been one of the other discussion groups) that solved that one - i printed it out as well, and have amazed/amused friends: i tell them the story, show them the stax of sheets that i waded through with no answer, and then the one page sheet that actually solved that issue - by connecting the express directly to the MacBook through ethernet.
so the Express came back to life, but not without residual issues - at this point i will tell you, i have always (for 20+ years working various frontend typography systems and then into the Macs) personified the hardware... ascribing personalities and names to them. my Express is called Patrick, while the Base is named Blanche. some people think i do it to try to humanize technology, but really i do it because i like the look in people's eyes when i'm talking about them... it gives me a sort of crazy-cat-lady cachet.
anyway, when Patrick returned from the near-dead, suddenly i started having issues with the Base - i couldn't figure it out for about a week. did resets, changed channels, relocated phones, waded started to wade through the paperwork again.. found out with some admin utility or other that within range of my living room sofa there are about a dozen wireless networks all humming away. after about a week of that i found out that since coming back to life, the Express (Patrick) had decided he was the base station and kept seizing control over the network - despite not being hooked into the modem. many resets later, he seemed to learn his place again and once again began to function as an add-on acessory instead of the boss.
and then there's the printers story... i have two, a simple b/w laser for type and (at that time) an 8-colour inkjet for photo, both USB. i guess you see where that story goes. i tried to cheat and finagle, but no dice, the base was quite firm with the rule - only one USB printer allowed. i realized my options were to buy another express to service the inkjet, move the inkjet into the middle of my living room - yuk - or replace my trusty photoprinter.
got a Bluetooth inkjet, the Pixma 6600D - great, problem solved... not quite. all is good if i am in the back office, or in the hallway between the office and the front room... past the hallway, about 10-12 feet away from the office, and the Printer is out of range. but i do have a workaround... if i am in the front room, i e-mail any images i want printed to my Blackberry, and use it to send to the printer - the Blackberry took the suggested range of 33 ft. to heart.
and my Airport network... that i loved so much at for all of its modernity and convenience. Patrick the Express sits beside the stero, his green light quite happy. it is too frustrating to try to play music only to have it start gapping and evenutally grind to a halt... the Base Station Blanche remains perched high above the office on a race of metro shelving - her sole purpose in life now to relay my files to the b/w laser - although every couple of days she seems to lose the printer and i have to shut them both down and restart before she finds it again.
i actually took it into my head just after Christmas to fire it all up again - there'd been something updated or something... and i decided to try changing the channels again. Airport Admin couldn't read the configurations for either part of my Airport Network, couldn't make any adjustments to them, and in fact they both disappeared for a couple of hours after i tried.
i am thinking in the new year to see if i can install the original Airport software that came with the base station, back when it all worked and was glorious... and until i hear that an upgrade, either software or firmware is in fact an improvement, they will (knock wood) continue on that way.
for now, i am can be quite happy with Roger's portable modem. by default, i am tethered to a 12 ft. radius to it, but that's not such a hardship...

  • Constantly losing trackpad functionality on Bootcamp

Hello, I am dual-booting Windows 7 and OSX 10.6.3, on the Windows side, I CONSTANTLY lose my ability to right-click. It will be working fine one second and then the next second it stops working and the only way I can get it back is by closing the lid to put the computer to sleep and then reopen the lid and the functionality comes back.... The issue also disables my ability to scroll using the trackpad.
Sometimes it will work fine for a day and a half before having the issue, and sometimes it will only take 30 minutes. It is EXTREMELY annoying and I would love to fix the issue. Any ideas?

Make sure you have the Boot Camp 3.2 upgrade installed in Windows, then go to the Boot Camp control panel in Windows and check the trackpad settings.
