Constantly needing to reset Airport Extreme

Hi! I have an Airport Extreme network set up in my office with an Airport Express acting as an extension. The Airport Express works for a day or so and then flashes amber the next day. I constantly need to unplug and plugin the Airport Express for it to work. If anyone has any tips, that would be great!

Seems to be the firmware update. This board is full of complaints. Hopefully, someone at Apple is working on a fix. It worked fine before this dumb update.

why am i needing to reset airport extreme almost daily? Is it just too old?

    Teresa,
You haven't provided any useful information so it's almost impossible to help you. If you are really running OS X 10.2.x as your profile states then you are posting in the wrong forum, this forum is for Intel based iMacs that began shipping with Tiger 10.4.x. Also you haven't stated what Airport Extreme you have, there have been many models over the years. Once you locate which AE you have I'd recommend posting in the appropriate AE forum and try to paint a clear picture of what is happening and also provide the verison of OS X you're using, the Mac model and ever the firmware version of the AE you have.  You can find the firmware version by running Airport Utility.

  • Need to reset Airport Extreme password, but the instructions provided by Apple and the support community do not match with what I get in my computer.

I have followed the directions given on the Apple support pages and the ones provided in this community, but they do not match with what I get from the Airport Utility. According to the dorections, after starting a soft restart on the Airport Extreme, I should select the network from the menu bar item (which I suppose is the symbol for wi fi). Then it says to open the Airport Utility and select the Airport Base Station, ok up to now. But the instructions say that after selecting the base station to "click Continue". In my Airport Utility, which is the latest version, there is no Contimue. When I select the Base Station I get a bubble with information on the base and an "Edit" button. By clicking on this button, I am able to get a new window with info on the Base, inlcuding password, but I never get the window which says that the device has been reset. I need help, as I have bought a second Apple computer and need the password to set the wifi preferences, and I forgot the password for the Airport Extreme.

You're doing everything right. The problem is that the Apple Knowledge Base article is outdated and the screenshots do not correspond to the new version of AirPort Utility.
If all you need to do is find the password for the Extreme, you can do that by following this procedure. Use the Mac that is already configured to connect to your Extreme's network.
You can retrieve your existing wireless network password from a Mac you normally use on that network. Your wireless network password is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
You must first have an Administrator account on a Mac that you use with that AirPort Base Station, one that is used to connect to your AirPort network.
On that Mac, open the Utilities folder. Find Keychain Access and launch it.
In the search field at the upper right, type Airport. All the Keychain entries for your base station will appear there, as well as other entries.
Look at the column "Kind". The entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort network password" (not "AirPort base station password" or anything else).
If you are trying to recover the AirPort Base Station password then the entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort base station password" not "AirPort network password".
Double-click that, and in the window that appears check the box for "Show password".
You will get the following window:
In the Password field type your Mac's Administrator password - the same one you used to log in to that Mac.
Then, click Allow, and your wireless network password will appear in the "Show password" field:
    Make note of it.
Close the window, then quit Keychain Access.

  • I have already bought a macbook pro in USA and I want to use it in Europe. What adapter I need for my Airport Extreme?

I have already bought a macbook pro in USA and I want to use it in Europe. What adapter I need for my Airport Extreme?

No power adaptor is needed as the power units are auto-switching. But you will need wall outlet adaptors such as you will find in Apple's World Travel Kit, at AAA stores, and other vendors.

  • Need to reset Airport Express

I just got speakers to connect to A express. I am now trying to play music wirelessly from laptop. Not Working!!! Looks like I need to reset airport etc... Unfortunatley my password is not working and I cannot change any settings. Any advice??? Thnx

Push the reset button down for about 5-7 seconds until the led blinks rapidly. This is a hard rest and the PW should be back to default....public.

  • Resetting Airport Extreme disabled my home network. Now when i attempt to get to internet with iPad, or iPhone, I see an Earthlink (ISP) window with message: The internet connection is currently in use by another computer (nun.nn.n.nn)

Resetting Airport Extreme disabled my home network. Now when i attempt to get to internet with iPad, or iPhone, I see an Earthlink (ISP) window with message: The internet connection is currently in use by another computer (nun.nn.n.nn) Enter your DSL Account logon psassword to switch the internet connection to this computer. If I do that, other messages follow. I am usually able to switch connection, but can have only one device on internet at a time. Tried to correct problem using Airport Utility, but failed.

Unfortunately, there is mass confusion about whether a device might be a modem or a modem/router since the terms are mixed up all the time. Even though a device might have only one Ethernet port, it can still be a router.
    If this is your "modem".......
    http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netopia-cayman-3341-router/4507-3319_7-30484785. html
It is not a modem.....it is a modem/router. If that is the case, then the AirPort Extreme is not the only router on your network....it is one of two routers, and it should be configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Does this device appear to be your "modem"?

  • IPad 1 to 1 now I am constantly resetting airport extremes

I work in a school and we have had airport extreme 802.11n (version 2 I think 9 total). All of them are running 7.6.3. We also added 60 ipads to the network for students and teachers. Since we have started school, I have had to reset various extremes at least three times. I don't see any reason for this to be happening. Sometimes there aren't even any clients on the airport extreme that must be reset. I don't know if I want to try 7.6.4 right now. I like to wait on airport extreme firmware. I do have the airport extremes set with the same SSID and the same WPA2 password. Any suggestions.

Copy the backup folder to another computer that can run the latest version of iTunes and restore on that one, make sure to disable autosync before you connect.
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Note: The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your home folder, Option-click the Go menu.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press theReturn key.

  • Need help with Airport Extreme and my new Verizon Fios Internet connection

I just got the Fios install, and the tech and I couldn't figure out how to use my Airport Extreme as my wireless connection. I'm not real tech savvy (and I've only been a Mac guy for about 18 months). My current arrangement is the basic Verizon setup with the Airport out of the loop. How can I go about moving from here back to using my Airport Extreme? I need the range! Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you tried resetting and reconfiguring the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?
Are you using OS 10.5 or OS 10.4 or earlier?
Are you using the round 802.11b/g AEBS or the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS?
If you are using OS10.5 OR the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS you should refer to "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" (direct PDF link).
Otherwise you should refer to "Designing AirPort Extreme Networks" (direct PDF link).

  • How do I reset airport extreme A1408 to use on different network after buying new Extreme?

I have just bought and set up new Airport ExtremeA1521 and want to take my old one and set up at son's.  It is A1408.  Will doing a reset do all I need to do?  And then I want to hook up an Express to it to extend his network.
    Thanks.

Power up the old AirPort Extreme for a minute or two, then hold in the reset button on the device for 8-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart back to a slow, blinking amber light status.
The network settings on the AirPort Extreme are now reset back to factory defaults, and you can now set up the AirPort Extreme to create a new network with a network name and password of your choice.
Then, the Express can be set up to extend the network. If you have a new Express, it will already be set to factory defaults, so all that is needed is that device be set up to connect to the AirPort Extreme.  If the Express has been previously set up, then it will first need to be reset back to factory default settings, before it can be set up again to extend the AirPort Extreme network.

    hi,
I have a problem with my airport extreme.
1, My airport extreme is set always stay connected to internet.  If I reboot my airport extreme, it can not update my airport extreme global host name to my DNS, I need to reconnect manually.
2, if I sent a wol command to my NAS, airport extreme internet connection will be reset. it can not update my airport extreme global host name to my DNS, I need to reconnect manually.

    Derek-
Since I could not find an answer on the support site. I contacted Apple Support. Once I explained the symptoms the tech seemed to know exactly how to address my issue. I will explain what happened in hopes that it will assist you. It seems that the issue has to do with the type of wireless network security set up in the Airport Extreme that conflicted with the Vista notebook's wireless adapter.
The tech had me launch Airport Utility, log into the Airport and Click on the Wireless. First he had me change the Radio Channel Selection from Automatic to Manual and changed the 2.4 GHz channel to 9 (from default 11) and the 5 Ghz channel to 157. The wireless security was set to WPA/WPA2 and he had me change it to WEP (Transitional Security Network) and I entered a 13 character key.
This resolved the internet connection issue with the Vista laptop immediately, but now I cannot print to my wireless Lexmark printer. I have a support email to Lexmark. It seems that the Lexmark driver/software only lists WPA in the install dialog and does not include WEP. My guess is that this is the source of the problem.
    I hope this helps.

  • After resetting airport extreme, cannot connect to internet

    Hi all,
Few weeks ago, my modem died so today I got a new one. Connected to Airport Extreme, it wouldn't work. I downloaded airport utility for windows (I am now using a window pc with airport) and did a reset and created a new network and none of it helped. The pc is seeing the airport but it just cant connect with the internet. I keep getting message that involves "double NAT"
    Please help thanks.

A Double NAT error indicates that your "modem" is actually a router. Since the AirPort Extreme is also a router, you wind up with two routers in series on a network, which is a no-no.
The AirPort Extreme needs to be configured in Bridge Mode to work correctly with your "modem".
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update
    Then restart your entire network

  • Set up advice needed and appreciated Airport Extreme and Time Capsule

Hi all - bear with me on this
I have an Airport Extreme attached to my modem in the living room - all is well
This is attached via the house electrical mains to a Time Capsule in the office - which I use as a back up drive - which is wired to my main computer (iMac).
All works well - but the range in the back - where the office is - isn't great (i struggle to go wireless in the garden) - would it be improved if I ticked the 'Allow this network to be extended' box?
I am not 100% certain what this means - what it does and whether i should tinker (by and large the two airports are set up and working as they came out of the box)
    any help is appreciated
    best
    darren, lockerbie,uk

The second part puzzles me - excuse me (but i honestly don't know) do both units give off a wifi signal of roughly equal 'amounts'?
Yes. Since both are connected by "Ethernet" each base station is its own wireless network and you have a few options on how best to configure them.
One of those options is to give both wireless networks the same Network Name (or SSID) so that you can, for example, "walk" a laptop from one to the other and stay connected. This is known as a roaming network.
If this is something that you don't desire or have a requirement for, then leaving them as two separate wireless networks would work just as well.
So what i am asking - i guess - is can i increase the distance the wifi signal reaches of the second unit (the time capsule - that is wired to the airport extreme)
To extend the wireless range of the Time Capsule (TC) you would need another 802.11n AirPort, like the AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). This should get a stronger signal out to the garden. Of course, it would really depend on the distance from the TC to where you would like to place the AXn to get the best results.
Let me know if you need help configuring the base stations.

  • Do I need to reconfigure airport extreme with a new modem?

I looking into buying a new modem (Motorola SB6120) to take advantage of Comcast's DOCSIS 3.0 speeds.  Just wondering if I will have to reconfigure my airport extreme?

You shouldn't have to reconfigure the AirPort Extreme, but it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment when replacing any one of them.
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
(OPTIONAL) While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

  • In need of help: Airport extreme network w/2 expresses weak coverage. WDS?

I have an newish N airport extreme base station w/time capsule connected to earthlink 'super fast' dsl via ethernet.
I also have 2 new N airport expresses.
I've been disappointed w. connections, speed, range, etc.
The extreme is set to gbn compatible as partner has an iphone which cannot connect to N.
the network is extended - and the expresses are set to expand the network and airtunes - however, they don't seem to make any difference to the wifi speed.
My flat is rather long - and I've placed the expresses along the main 'throw' of the extreme.
I created a parabolic reflector to direct the signal along the hallway.
Should I set up a WDS network? or change channels or what?
This issue drives me to distraction.
    I would appreciate any advice/suggestions.
    Thanks,
    JWW

WDS is an option. Be aware that to use WDS you would need to force your network to use the slower 802.11g. In addition each WDS link cuts the wireless bandwidth in half. Since you have 3 base stations you would have 3 WDS links which would mean that your bandwidth would be 1/8 (1/21/21/2) of what it is now. The range and signal strength would be better but the bandwidth might not.
Instead, you might try configuring your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to allow itself to be extended (an 802.11n feature). Configure the closest AirPort Express (AX) to "extend a wireless network". Hopefully this would push the wireless network far enough for use in the entire flat. This is only useful between two base stations, therefore you would need to configure the furthest AX to simply join the wireless network.
