Constantly prompted to restore or set up as new

when conecting to computer, my ipod is recognized and shows up by name, but im constantly prompted to either restore or set up as new. Ive tried restore several times, it goes through the process, but when completed, it prompts me again. Ive owned this ipod for over a year and have been syncing to the same computer the whole time. Seems like the issue started after an itunes update

I decided I would write this update because I noticed a few people viewed my post. I found a fix that worked for me in a forum. I created a new user account on my windows vista. I did not add a password for that account because when I attempted to, i got a warning about how some passwords or settings would be disabled in this new account by adding a passwor? (probably not important but Im trying to be specific) I plugged my ipod touch into the usb port. It went through the 'installing new software' process, then itunes opened, which, btw, I couldnt see on my desktop or in my programs. I assumed it would download a new one, but I guess it accessed the one from my other user account? Maybe because I ommitted a password when setting up the new account? I also noticed that 'manually manage files' was still selected. Another carry over from my itunes in my other user account I assume, which is good. Once everything was finished loading up, I could access my ipod once again, no more 'restore/set up as new' loop. Hope this helps

So you're trying to set up your wife's phone as a new device? Just go to settings > general > reset > erase all content and settings, and you'll get a new device

I figure that either of those options will result in losing all SMS and data created since the last backup. Not a major loss, but ** annoying when nothing has changed and the time it will take to restore.
When was the last time you synced your iPhone with iTunes since the backup is updated as the first step during the sync process?

There is no way to know for certain but I've never experienced the same in the first place. I venture to say having to do this is the exception rather than the rule.

Select setup as "New", the next screen should prompt you to rename your phone. Just name it what you already have it named. After that, you should be able to sync and all of your data & settings will still be exactly as you've already set them up on your phone. The message is more threatening than what really happens.

IPod detected as new: prompted to restore from backup ...(?)

have no idea why, as soon as my iPod is dectected in iTunes, I'm being prompted to restore from a backup. Itunes seems to identify my iPod as a new device (?) and guess what, I don't want to restore. The iTunes backup is a few days old, my iPod works fine etc.. what can I do to let iTunes know that it's still the same old iPod being connected? thanks.
ps: the issue is new, I'm usually doing regular syncing and backups through both iTunes and iCloud, nothing has changed on my system.

thanks but this is not my problem at all, I didn't restore recently ... anyway as said everything went back to normal after I set up my iPod as new via iTunes. That doesn't set it back to factory settings etc... like I feared first, that just merges iTunes already synced stuff with the iPod data.
ps: I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, and it's up to date. Could be that the download/traffic scanning interferes with iTunes, but I won't deactivate it

Is this a new iPhone?
If so, when connecting a new iPhone to iTunes for the first time that has been used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the new iPhone, or set up the new iPhone as a new iPhone.
If you don't want to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device, select set up as a new iPhone. No existing data or settings will be erased or changed when selecting as a new iPhone. Not that difficult or difficult at all.

So after a backup your iPhone was acting like it was restored and now your PC won't even see it?
