Constantly rebuilding Mail

Here's the deal:
I used Entourage for a long time but with my new MacBook I decided to give Mail a try.
It's good, but I'm having a problem that I can't solve, so I'm thinking on going back to Entourage.
I manage 4 POP accounts.
The first one is my company e-mail. So, since the pop server (10.x.x.x) is inside my company network, I have to change when I'm at home (pop.mycompany.xxx)
The second is the oposite. It is my home pop server. (10.x.x.x) when I'm at home and (pop.myhomeserver.com) when I'm at work.
The third is an external account, that I never need to change the server.
The fourth is my .mac account that also works fine.
So the problem is the 2 first accounts.
Probably because I keeping changing the pop server, Mail is having trouble to "save" my messages at the inbox. Messages keep disapering and I need to constantly rebuild the two accounts.
Anyone had this problem or can help me with an insight of how to solve this issue?
Thanks!
Neto

In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/. You'll see several folders whose name starts with POP, followed by an account username and the corresponding incoming mail server. These are the account folders Mail uses to store the mailboxes of each of the accounts (and the messages within them). Now you can see why changing either the account username or the incoming mail server is a really bad idea.
What I don't understand is, if those accounts are actually different and they use different usernames and/or incoming mail servers, why don't you just set up a different account in Mail for each one? Why do you make all of this so convoluted? I really don't get it.

  • Why does my mac mail constantly rebuild itself in the area called Mail Activity?

My Mail is constantly rebuilding itself. When at home with a super fast internet connection, it's not big deal, but when travleing and using a slower connection the activity runs all the time.  Seems to me that it's taking up resources. I have Gmail and Yahoo accounts set up and sometimes it's downloading 12,000 messages!  Is this a problem?  What happens if I hit the "x" or cancel button during a download?

Sounds more like a server issue rather than rebuilidng and as a matter of fact, an actual rebuild might help.

  • Aperture constantly rebuilds same thumbnails and preview images.

What is behind Aperture 2's pathological obsession with constantly rebuilding the same thumbnails and preview images, and is there any way to stop it? I can't link this performance killing problem to any specific action on my part; I see it in many different circumstances. For example:
    (1) Putting the system to sleep while Aperture is open then resuming later
    (2) Hiding the Aperture app, working on other memory consuming apps for a while (e.g. Photoshop), then returning to Aperture
    (3) Switching from one project to another via the "Projects" tab.
    (4) Quitting Aperture then restarting it.
I can say with 100% certainty that this is not the result of some previous thumbnailing/preview generation operation that was interrupted. The # of images in the project doesn't seem to have a bearing. Nor does the type of camera or image type I've imported from the camera.
I can be happily working in Aperture, working with a project created months ago, when all of a sudden the "generating thumbnails" message and the dreaded Wait Cursor appear and my speedy, well-apportioned iMac grinds to a total halt while Aperture does the same ** thing it's already completed before.
The only hit I get when searching Apple's support site mentions a known bug for those who upgraded from Aperture 1 to version 2 but definitely does not apply to me here.

Thank you for the reply Tony. I've followed your suggestion but Aperture continues to (apparently) randomly decide to regenerate thumbnails and previews.
The problem has become bad enough that I've had to stop using Aperture completely.
Doesn't anybody from Apple read these forums? I can't possibly be the only Aperture user in the world to experience this problem...

  • Trying to rebuild mail, is it normal for it to continue for over 3 hours

How long should it take to rebuild mail, going for 3+ hours already

It finished after about 4 hours, this is my first mail rebuild.

  • On booting Mail 4.5 says Rebuild Mail Databases

It claims another computer is accessing my mail accounts. I got an iPhone recently and the problem did start at that time. I have had an iPod touch for a long time and never had this problem.
Usually I just say quit and relaunch mail and everything is okay. It only happens when I boot.
Lately I have had to force quit Mail.
On one occasion, after cloning my Hard disk, i did say Rebuild Mail Databases. Bad decision. I had to force quit when it indicated it had finished. and Mail sent some messages that were a year old out again, causing confusion. Some of the recipients received a blank email with the subject complete. Others received the complete email.
I use SpamSeive, Mailtags, Mail Act-On and Mail follow up plug ins.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I solved the problem by following this advice from WZZZ
"Try moving the small 8.1MB Mail.app to the Trash. But don't empty it. Then download and install the Security Update again. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
Luckily I didn't empty or trash my original Mail and after installing that update (link above), Mail opens fine.

  • Rebuild Mail Box Folders

How important is it to rebuild mail boxes and if so how often should it be done? Is it the same as "compacting" folders in other mail clients such as thunderbird? What are the consequences of not rebuilding mail boxes? Thanks for a reply.

  • How do I rebuild mail database manually

I am running Mac OS X version 10.2.8. I need to rebuild the mail database manually. I have done it in the past, but I have forgotten the exact command line operations. I know that new versions have apps that do it very easily, but a newer version is not an option right now. Could someone please help?
    Thanks

  • Rebuild Mail

I hit the rebuild button in Mail because I was getting the "need to download from server" message and all my mail disappeared? How do I get it back?

The majority of Mail.app data is stored in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
All account information and general Mail.app preferences are stored in the Mail.app preference file at Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist.
So these are the only two items you need to drag and drop from the backup to restore all Mail.app data and settings.
With the Mail.app quit, place the backup copy of the Mail folder at Home > Library and the backup copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file at Home > Library > Preferences.
    Done.

  • Constantly rebuilding Iphoto 09

Since I upgraded my computer to Iphoto 09 i've had problems opening the program. I've been advised to rebuild, which I have, but i'm constantly having to do so. I've also installed the Iphoto library manager. At this point all I get it an empty grey window when I try to open the program, followed shortly by the pinwheel that remains on my screen until I force quit the program. I really don't want to rebuild again. Please advise what other options there are and what can I do to get Iphoto to work correctly. Thank you

I have the same problem. I have a 1TB iMAC with 800 GB free space. I use iphoto manager and have 4 iPhoto libraries.
When I have this problem, I rebuild the library using iPhoto Manager and it works fine for a few days, but if I manipulate the photos (ie, use faces, import, etc), then the next time I try to open the library, I get a grey empty iphoto screen, no iphoto menu bar, a pinwheel, then after abou 20-30 seconds, the grey screen disappears. Iphoto never opens.
    Any ideas?

  • Even after rebuild Mail is slow or crashing -- HELP!!!

Seems like since the update to OS 10.4.5, I'm having Mail 2.0.5 problems. My Mail is set up with two accounts: .Mac and a POP with insightbb.com. A friend/tech had me do a rebuild on both accounts but this still is not stopping the long, long time it's taking Mail to send Mail with thing backed up in the Outbox. Note that I am noticing this mostly with outbound .Mac mail. Mail is also slow with incoming mail. AND, my accounts are synced with .Mac and I'm experiencing this issue in Mail 2.0.5 on my home iMac and work iMac. Both are running 10.4.5.
I notice other posts about Mail acting weird since 10.4.5 so I am going to have to wait for 10.4.6???

I'm having the same type issue.  I'll hear Mail chime and there will be nothing new.
I even have rules to make the Dock icon bounce when I receive email from certain people... that will trigger, but no new messages.  Eventually they show up, sometimes hours later, but there was at least one Gmail message that Mail never delivered.  That really has me concerned and looking at alternatives.
All of this started for me after Apple's patch to fix Mail.

  • Rebuilding Mail's search index?

A few days ago, I activated FileVault. Spotlight has been reindexing my computer since then and in Mail in particular, the search results are very disappointing, i.e. most messages have apparently not been reindex so far.
Can I somehow force Mail to rebuild its search index?
    Daniel

What type of searches are we talking about here?
All types of searches, i.e. e-mail I had received before I activated FileVault cannot be found.
I've meanwhile deactivated FileVault and Spotlight is now reindexing my Mac, hopefully including all my e-mail …

  • How often do i need to Rebuild Mail to get search to work

i seem to be not getting correct results on some searches and when i click on an email from someone i /don't/ see the other emails highlighted from this person listed but if i click on /another/ email with this person's same address i /do/ see a /third/ email highlighted in green.
is this simply a case of needing to run a REBUILD or are there other factors at work here?
also, does the search dialog in the top right hand corner work the way you would imagine it should? i sometimes don't see results that i think i should.
i have multiple email boxes (about 13) all listed under "Inbox".
    TIA

    > In "connect by level <= 3000000", this is where I specify the number of records to be
    inserted into the database, right?
Yes. Caveat - I have not looked at the execution plan of this SQL to see what (if any) the performance and overheads are. I usually only use it for generating 1000's of rows for testing purposes. Not millions. But it seems to work fine with the 3 million limit I used. It should work with 37 million.. touch wood.
    > Another question, if I want to insert random string but with specify constraint, is that possible in SQL?
Yes - you can use the CASE statement in SQL. The CASE statement is described in the Oracle® Database SQL Reference guide.
Obviously using a CASE statement will have a performance impact of sorts - but it will still be faster than using a PL/SQL function to do it.
    > how about BLOBs?
That depends on what are you planning to put into the LOB. If each row has to contain a random BLOB, then you may need to resort to a PL/SQL function that can return a randomly generated BLOB of a random length.
If the BLOB can be fixed, you can do it with a bind variable - as a CLOB. Define a PL/SQL procedure (or function) that returns a CLOB of the size that you need. Let's call this procedure CreateClob.
In SQL*Plus you define a CLOB bind variable:
    SQL> var b CLOB
Then you call this proc and assign the resulting CLOB that it creates to the bind variable:
    SQL> exec CreateClob( :b )
Now you can use the CLOB bind variable in the SQL statement. E.g.
    SQL> insert into foo( clob_col ) values( :b );
Consult the Oracle® Database PL/SQL Packages and Types Reference guide for details on the DBMS_LOB package.
Both documents contains all the details and includes examples - and are references that I still use almost daily when dealing with Oracle. Copies of Oracle docs are available at http://tahiti.oracle.com

  • ACR Cache Constantly Rebuilds

Everytime I click on a folder of images the cache rebuilds from scratch. This behavior started this week. I've trashed prefs but it didn't help. I'm using CS3 on Dell computer with 4GB of ram and Vista.

If you are talking about the cache from raw files inside of Bridge, that's _NOT_ Camera Raw's cache...that's Bridge's cache. You would be better off asking about your issue in the Windows Bridge forum...

  • Is there a way to just reset/rebuild mail in Yosemite?

    Hi
As previously posted - I made a change to my spam setting (move spam to spam folder) and since then my mail quits everytime I start it up.  I'm even able to get to the preference for it but it just quits.
The resolutions offered here in communities are complicated.
Is there a way to just RESET mail?  Or even re-install the OS?
    Thanks so much everyone!
    Brian

You can reset Mail's configuration by doing the following:
If Mail is open, then close it.
    Open Terminal.
    Enter the following:
    mv "${HOME}/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail"{,.$(date +%s)}

  • Constantly having to rebuild mailboxes

Most messages I receive have the senders name changed to a previous sender, or a junk mail sender.
Clicking Mailbox - rebuild- fixes it, but then if I go to Sent messages -( same wrong name happens there as well)-on return to my Inbox - all messages have all reverted to the one new sender.
Constantly rebuilding mailboxes is wearying ! Where do I look for the culprit setting please ??

Thanks for your prompt response Ernie,
I'm using a POP account and have a separate.mac account. I did have Internet Cleanup installed(Supplier's name withheld) but it threw up some message about kernel problems so I uninstalled that. Now I keep getting messages about purchasing the product as the trial period has expired - although I had paid for that download.
I can't get rid of these popup messages as there is no sign of the original app that I can find.
That could be the cause of the problem.
The situation has got worse as this morning I have lost all my "sent" emails.
Where do I start looking to try next please ?
Thank you for the many hours you devote to helping others in the Mac forums. Your expertise makes a difference to a lot of people. Thank you.
