Constrain-Drag in Piano Roll?

Before I send this one in as a feature-request, I wanted to make sure it wasn't an already-implemented feature which I just hadn't figured out yet:
When dragging a selection in the Piano Roll (aka Matrix) view, is there any way (presumably via a modifier key) to restrict the move to ONLY vertical (or ONLY horizontal)?
In many apps, this happens when you Shift-Drag a selection. In FinalCut, for instance, when you drag a clip from one track to another, holding the Shift key keeps that selection at the exact same spot along the Timeline. This is what I often want when moving a selection in the Piano Roll -- to change the notes in that particular MIDI track, but keep them in the exact same spot relative to all the other tracks.
Is there any "official" way to do this Logic -- other than simply by eye, which is how I do it now?
Thanks,
John Bertram

Another useful nugget -- thank you.
I also just discovered that when the "constrain" preference is left on (making it the default), clicking Shift once as you describe turns OFF the vertical/horizontal constraint just for that one particular move.
Very cool!

  • Fixed note length in piano roll

Hello ,is there any way to draw notes with a fixed length in the piano roll rather than using the last edited note's length?
In other words,i want the default note length not to automatically change every time i draw/edit a new note (with a different length).
Im quite sure this cannot be done, but i thought i should ask to confirm...
I also feel i want to say my opinion on that, you dont have to read it or answer back to it:
I find this way of editing very confusing and counter creative ,it sure adds extra thinking proccess. While you are drawing notes it
constantly keeps your mind away from your melody line since in every step, you have to stop some milliseconds and think
"which side should i drag to resize now given the new facts left or right?"....
And extra (unnecessary) thinking always acts against creativity.
I think it seems very logical the way i said that and that objectively, irrelevant to any personal preferences, this way of editing
,even if i doesnt annoy everyone ,it is indeed counter creative.
Especcially if one really does a lot of editing rather than recording.
I wish there was an option for that in the preferences, maybe something very simple like a checkbox "Automaticaly define default note" to uncheck.
Im sure it would be only a few hours of programming for the developers to do something like that, but it would be such a saver for people
who edit a lot or for people coming from other DAWS, or for anyone that simply cant get used to it because they feel it anti-intuitive / unatural...
There...i shared my thoughts, at least i feel a better know...!
(However if you read my opinion i d like to hear what other people (that do a lot of editing) feel )

You can use the transform tool but it's "after the fact". Simply rubberband a group of notes to be changed and use the Transform tool under the piano roll's "function" menu. Choose "Fixed Note Length" then set the parameter box to the value you need.
There's also this workaround:  Find a note of the correct length already in the sequence or create temporary notes of the correct length. I'm assuming by "draw" you mean using the pencil tool. Move the pencil over the *center of note with the length you need, left mouse click and hold for a second, until the pencil turns into a hand, you will now have the length set for drawing new notes. The pencil tool is still selected so you don't have any additional selections to make.
Yes, it's a hassle, but once you get used to it you will find it's faster than what you've been doing.
*slight correction: when moving the pencil tool over the *center of a note, it will change into the pointer arrow, left click and hold and it will change into the hand, move the pointer away and it goes back to the pencil.

  • Why do the piano roll and event editor act differently?

In Logic Studio 9, this wasn't the case, but there are numerous examples now where editing MIDI in the event view acts right, and editing the same MIDI content in the piano roll acts wrong.  It's extremely frustrating!  Personally, I think who ever modified the behavior of the Piano Roll in Logic 10 should be fired on the spot.  I'd downgrade to 9 in a heartbeat if it was still available in the App Store.
Two examples off the top of my head:
    - Selecting a MIDI note in the event viewer selects ONLY the note and not all the MIDI objects that fall within the time span of that note. This is not the case in the piano roll as it assumes that when you select a note, you want *more* than just the note you're clicking on. This is a stupid assumption and is new in 10.
    - Dragging midi notes in the piano roll randomly deletes all non-note events and changes the action from "move" to "copy" where the only workaround when the piano roll gets stuck in this state is to do the same action in the event viewer.
Please rollback changes made to the piano roll in 10 back to what 9 was as I've wasted countless hours of my life trying to work around these flubs!

Try making a blank project with no settings at all and just add a bass from whatever plugin. Make sure there are no plugins at all on the track (not just muted but removed). Then try again.
I believe palying on the pianoroll with the mouse plays at 127 velocity but I ain´t sure. How about the output? Does it clip/go red? Then it will disort.

  • Displaying multiple midi regions in piano roll

I have overdubbed some midi tracks and would like to view and edit them in one window of the piano roll.
The manual says "Ensure that View > Show Selected Regions Only is switched off."
Well for the life of me, I cannot find any option in either view menu (arrange window or piano roll) for "Show Selected Regions Only."
    Am I missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Not sure if this will help or not, but if you select all the MIDI you have, and then open piano scroll view, all the MIDI will be there. The drag is it is a litle hard identifying one from the other.
I have two Ultrabeat tracks and selected both tracks, then opened Piano Scroll and both were there.
Not sure if that helps or not bro but it is what I have done to address the problem

  • Cant get software loop to show in piano roll to edit

    Hey
Ok creating a song and made a software loop and i want to loop it straight through it stops at  49 at the original color  so I can see it in the piano roll  now that i looped and dragged it to 120 its a different shade of color and i cant see it in the piano roll.  So i can edit this one off beat snare and kick,
I tried dragging regions / copy and paste  but it not keeping the same tempo so i revert or undo to last saved or last undo
Ok the question........  how do i get the whole region to be the same color so it will show in the piano roll editor  with no splits  or differnet region I know merge but whet do I do ..... its probably simple as **** but I am new and trying here

Drag your Project End Marker to the right - now it is at 49.
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=7%26sec tion=8%26tasks=true
To define a project’s end point
    Do one of the following:
Drag the project end marker in the Bar ruler to the left or right.
Set the value in the Transport bar’s numerical Project End display (by click-dragging or double-clicking the value).
Note: If your Transport bar does not include the Project End display, Control-click it and choose Customize Transport Bar in the shortcut menu. Select the Tempo/Project End checkbox in the Customize Transport Bar pane.

  • Enter triplet values in piano roll... and volume question

How can I get the piano roll grid view to temporarily change to subdivisions of 3 per per beat (instead of 4) in a 4/4 piece so I can align triplets?
Also, how do I change the volume of a single note in the piano roll editor?
    TIA

    1. In the transport bar, where you see the time signature (default 4/4), just below that is the beat subdivision. You can click on it and drag up or down to change the value. A value of 12 will subdivide a beat into thirds.
    2. You can't really change the volume of a note, per se, since volume is a MIDI parameter that doesn't apply to single notes, but rather as continuous data. You can, however, change the velocity of notes, which will affect the volume of the note if the note's velocity is programmed for volume change. To do this, choose the Velocity tool (escape, then 9) and click the note and drag up or down.

  • Chaning pitch in piano roll like in Gragaband and Akai MPC

The other day I was fiddling around with Garaband on my buddies new Macbook and I found a cool feature which I thought the MPC was the only that has it.
If you select a MIDI note in the piano roll in GB, you can change the pitch of that note and it tunes the sample it triggers (the mIDI note remains at the original place, however). How do I do this in Logic?? This is an excellent thing if you fi are programming a snare roll or if you trigger different samples in 1 sampler and can't change pitch other than automating the sampler's tuning parameter.
I hope I make sense? This is hard to explain in a foreign language.

sorry, but just wanna cover this...say if im programming a drum beat in the piano roll. i dont like to use mouse or trackpad at all.
i would record a pattern with caps lock on-screen keyboard, i tend to copy and paste certain notes via mouse drag to select and copy and drag to copy too. but i guess i can select multipe notes with modifiers..?...and copy and paste too, by moving the song position line via the transport display figure...right....
(theres no avoiding mouse/trackpad is there?)
then moving and shifting notes is ok...
any other cool shortcuts for building a drum pattern in piano roll editor, for someone who doesnt wanna use mouse or trackpad?

  • Paste notes in Piano Roll changes Region size

    Hi,
When I copy/paste a note in the piano roll, using cmd+C, cmd+V, it also changes the Region size. Which is not convenient at all.
When I do it with alt+mouse, it works perfectly fine. But I work mainly with keyboard commands.
Also, sometimes it even creates a new region on its own.
    I am on LogicPro X 10.0.1, OS X 10.8.4, iMac 2.5 Ghz, 16 Gb RAM.
I saw similar questions already, but no answer yet.
    Thank you by advance

You shouldn't have an issue...doing what you are doing.. and I cannot recreate it here..
But an alternative would be to simply copy the Region itself in the Arrange window....
Hold Down the Option key and drag region using mouse or trackpad....

  • Region handles in piano roll-where are they?

    Hey!
In Logic 9's piano roll, there were handles on either end of the regions so you could drag the region ends to make them longer or shorter.
I see no handles to do that in Logic Pro X.  Where are they?
In Logic Pro X the only way I can see to lengthen or shorten a region is to do it in the Main Window.  So, in piano roll I have to got to the Main Window to adjust a region.  How clunky is that?!!
Is there a way to expand or contract regions in the piano roll?  Anyone?
    Thanks,
    P.

I don't use iCloud and the last time I backed up was on September 29th to my computer, but I don't import photos or video when I backup, just music, apps, etc. And there's no other albums besides my camera roll, which only has the 29 pictures/videos.

  • Piano Roll Incorrect Note Playback

I've been recording through my keyboard into the computer no problem for ages. I recorded a song last night, played it back soo many times and this afternoon I am about to put more instruments in, and the piano roll is playing B2 as E2. It's only in one track and it doesn't matter whether I copy it from one track to a different track, it keeps reading this one note as a completely different one. I have also tried dragging another note down to it. When I click on the note, it recognises it, but then when I play it again, it goes back to reading B2 as E2. I've tried closing and opening the app to no avail. Any suggestions?

10 and Steinway piano I think. Using my keyboard to play through it. Works with everything else. It's just so weird. That one track gets confused and I found out that another segment further on where I re-recorded and that gets confused between two completely different notes! For now I've deleted it and started again. I was paranoid that if I added to the file that other keyboard tracks would get confused. So far no other file has been confused *fingers crossed* but i was wondering. Whether I had pressed something by accident that changed the keys around

  • Catch video frame in piano roll

I use Logic X to score for TV and Film and a big part of my workflow used to be dragging notes in the piano roll editor to match the picture.
The dragged note used to scroll the video and catch the frame in previous versions, this seems to have disappeared in LPX.
Is there something I haven't checked to enable this?
    Thank you,
    Simon.

(first attempt:) I can't confirm this. Resizing always as expected.
I also noted that even in your video it is inconsistent. @ 0.42 this odd glitch does not happen.
I just tried it again and "success": I deleted my recorded midi notes and pencilled in one instead, and I can now replicate your bug. It only happens if I try to lengthen the note by moving the left side. All resizing the via grabbing the right side, or shortening via the left side  work normally.
my MO: Open a New project, create 1 Software Instrument track (no need to load an actual instrument), pencil in 1 region (two bars long), go to the Piano Roll for that region, open MIDI draw and pencil in some Expression events (MIDI CC 11), then pencil in 1 note and try resizing and moving it.
Another weird bug, this, though luckily it can be worked around easily.
I tried to make this note exactly 3/4 by dragging the left side:
This is the result (it moved with a catterpillarlike motion, like in the vid)

  • How to raise the piano roll notes at the same value? (127)

    hello,
who knows a quick way to do this??
    thanks for your help

Select all notes in *Piano Roll Editor,* select *Velocity tool,* then *option-shift drag* any note.
    or:
Select all notes in *Event Editor,* option-shift drag any one value in the velocity value column.

  • How to edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window

I edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window at the same time. (It is very handy way of editing especially in huge orchestra projects.)
I can see midi contents of all selected regions in Piano Roll at the same time.
    1) But how to choose certain one region of many selected to edit it?
    2) And how to edit all at once?
Hope the questions are clear enough.
    Thanks.

First of all, the Piano Roll has two mechansim, of what it is displaying.
Selected Track: This displays all the Regions that you select in the Tracks Window
One Track: Selecting one Region in the Track Area displays all the Regions of tha tTrack in the Piano Roll. If you select multiple Regions in the Tracks Window, then the last selected Regions counts.
Whatever Regions are now displayed in the Piano Roll Editor can be edited. Select the MIDI Events and apply the command.
You can also apply edits directly to the selected Regions in the Tracks Window.
I explain all those little details in my graphically enhanced manuals ("Logic Pro X - How it Works")
One thing to be clear about:
Tracks Window: Any edit is applied to the selected Regions
Piano Roll Editor: Ay edit is applied to the selected Events
    Hope that helps

  • When i try to open piano roll it is stuck on the same track regardless of whether another track is selected. I cannot elect a new synt track and pull up in piano roll

When i try to use piano roll it always goes back to a single track. Even if I select another track or adda new blank track it will not open.
Also if I add notes to the track that opens I cannot hear them when i place them on piano roll

There's a little icon in the top left corner of the piano roll window that looks like a pair of chain links. If that is selected (goes yellow) then the piano roll editor is linked to the arrange page region selection(s). Sounds like what you want.
It's really useful sometimes to be able to unlink, so that you can keep one piano roll open (to watch the timing of the notes, for example) and not haver it change each time you do something in the arrange page.
Also, next to it is a little man running icon. If that is selected, the piano roll will chase the cursor. If not selected, it won't. Also useful sometimes.
    Hope that helps
