Constrain proportions in PS CS6

Hi
I resently went from PSE to PS. I was wondering if it was possible to change the default way the proportions work, when you drag a corner of a layer.
In PSE the default is that the proportions are constraint, but in PS you need to hold down shift to to do this.
Is it possible to change the default in PS to the same default as PSE?
Trying to figure the same out for AI - have been through the settings but could not find anything.
Thanks.
Ulf

Thanks
I can do this, but I would like to do it for the move tool where I resize layers and selections. I can find a way to do it when I have an area selected like this:
I works but as soon as I close and open PS the default is non-proportional again.

  • Constrain proportions only working sometimes?

    When holding Shift to constrain proportions and resizing using the scale tool, it only sometimes constrains proportions correctly. The other times the smart guides say it's constraining uniformly but it doesn't (the info display shows the width at 100% and the height changing though). This seems to happen when I click to the bottom right of the object, but not lower than the furthest bottom point of the object. Is this another "feature"? How do I turn it off if it is a "feature"?

    Further clarification:
    Normally when holding down shift and resizing with the scale tool it switches between resizing only the one axis (a smart guide line on the 90 degree axis) and resizing both axis' uniformly (a smart guide line on the 45 degree axis) depending on where my mouse is. When this problem manifests it only switches between resizing only the one axis (smart guide showing 90 degree axis) and some weird in-between state where the smart guide shows a +-30 degree axis line and states that it is a uniform resize and the info display shows only one axis resizing, yet BOTH are resizing, in a weird distorted proportion. It DOESN'T switch to a true uniform resize no matter where i move my mouse, and I have to release the resize, undo and do it again. I'm still not able to emulate this reliably so i can file a bug report....
    I hope this isn't even MORE confusing...

  • Cannot uncheck "Constrain Proportions" in PS Elements 10 for Mac

    I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 for the Mac (running Lion). I want to adjust the image resolution without changing the image size.
    When I go to Image -> Resize -> Image Size, the height, width and proportions are constrained together. The "Constrain Proportions" box is checked. I cannot uncheck it. Clicking on the chain icon does not help either. The image is a JPEG. Does anyone know what I have to do to be able to unconstrain proportions? Thanks in advance for your advice!

    The answer: check the Resample Image checkbox.

  • Problem with scale tool locked on "constrain proportions"

    I have no idea how that happened but suddenly my Scale Tool stopped working like it should be and works as if it was locked on "constrain proportions".
    Whenever I try to scale an object (any object), if I try to scale it by dragging one of the transform bounding box corners, it scales like I would keep the Shift key pressed.
    Is there a key shortcut that locks the "constrain proportions" setting?
    I was trying to find an answer to that problem and it looks like there are people with the same issue but none of them got any answer.

    The following article doesn't address the Scale/Transform behavior at issue here, but it offers some good information on scaling objects in Fireworks:
    http://www.fireworkszone.com/six-ways-to-scale-an-object-in-adobe-fireworks_654.html
    I particularly liked its description of scaling using Pointer tool:
    Instead of using the Scale Tool you can use the Pointer tool. The pointer tool can scale, auto shapes, bitmaps but cannot scale any path object or symbols. Rectangle Primitives are a special case, but if you ungroup it, then the pointer cannot scale it. Draw a circle/ellipse, polygon, or any auto shape and ungroup it to become a regular path, and the pointer tool cannot scale it. Draw a line with the line tool or a custom path with the pen tool, and the pointer tool cannot scale it.
    What it doesn't mention is that you can basically surround anything with a Group, and then scale it using the Pointer tool—even objects that couldn't otherwise be scaled this way, like Symbols or Paths. So instead of selecting the Scale tool or the Transform command, you could group the selected object(s) using the Group command (e.g. ⌘G), scale non-proportionally or proportionally (with the Shift key) using the Pointer tool, and then Ungroup (e.g. ⇧⌘G).
    It's an idea, anyway.

  • Using shift key to constrain proportions while scaling

    I notice that using the shift key doesn’t currently constrain proportions when scaling objects. This is pretty standard behaviour in graphics apps and it would be good to have this included in Muse. There seems to be nowhere to manually enter a scale factor either, which would be useful.

    Looking into this further, it seems that the behaviour is inconsistent. A placed rectangle object can be resized proportionally when constrained with the shift key, but this doesn’t work the same way when scaling a placed image. Additionally, using the crop tool on a placed image does allow constraint using the shift key.
    Testing with grouped objects, a group of plain rectangles can be resized proportionally, but a group of images cannot.
    The answer is to use the lock button when resizing images but it would be better if the behaviour were consistent across object types.

  • Can't change constrained proportions

    I'm completely puzzled: I have a whole series of images I
    need to optimize/reduce, and all three dimensions (w, h,
    resolution) appear to be locked, with the constrain proportion box
    grayed out. I'm using FW 8 on a Mac, and this appears to be a
    fairly recent problem. What ridiculously simple solution am I
    missing here? And why might it be happening with images I've
    received from others? I've optimized many images in the past
    without incident.
    Thanks for any help!

    You didn't say which version you are using, but I am on CS3
    and didn't
    appreciate the other day when resizing a square with
    dimensions something
    like 196x196, typing 200 in the top box resulted in 201 on
    the bottom and
    vice versa. I had to uncheck constrain proportions to get
    what I wanted.
    This would seem like a programmatic no-brainer!?

  • Scaling Styles without Constrain Proportions

    Hi, I'm an artist and have paintings that I take digital images of and work on them in Photoshop cs4. The problem I have is that the images, when cut out from the background, are smaller than the actual painting and the aspect ratio (ratio of one side to the other) is not correct. When I scale the image using the image size dialog and use constrain proportions and scale styles the image has the same look as the original, however the aspect ratio is not correct and to look exactly the same the aspect ratio has to be correct. When I untick the constrain proportions, the scale styles is also automatically unticked and when I size the image to the exact size, the image has a very harsh and abrupt look that is not there in the painting. Is there any way of not using constrain proportions and using scale styles?

    222design wrote:
    No I don't but when I use scale styles it produces an image with the same look as the original and when I don't it doesn't.
    Well, that's nice and vague:P There's something else at work here, that checkbox doesn't affect how your image will look if you don't have Layer Styles in it. Are you viewing your image at 100%?

  • Constraining Proportions

    When clicking on the constrain proportions box in the Property Inspector in CS5, and using the scale tool, it seems like it scales in proportion without using the shift key on an image whether the box is checked or not? How is this supposed to work?
    Thanks.

    The feature is there so that you can numerically scale an object within the Properties Panel, without using the scaling tool.

  • Constrain proportions for zoom area not working-Captivate 5

    It does not matter whether constrain proportions is checked or unchecked, the zoom area windows do not maintains the height-to-width ratio.

    Hi David Ovich 1,
    the contrain Proportions works perfect if you keep the mouse button pressed over the number next to W: and slide the mouse left/right.
    Release the mouse button and the H: will be scaled too.
    Same goes for entering numbers in there.
    But there is no way scaling the object other than pressing SHIFT at the same time you scale the object.

  • Fit Content Proportionally Broken in CS6?

    I have been having a lot of issue with Fit Content Proportionally since upgrading to CS6.
    In many of my documents (some new, some pulled in from earlier versions and saved over as CS6), I find that both via the menu and via the keyboard shortcut, the commonly-used and absolutely essential "Fit Content Proportionally" command just simply does not work.
    I can create a bunch of square frames, and then fill them all with various-sized and shaped images, and then when I would usually Fit Content Proportionally to make them all scale down inside the boxes, what I get instead is no response at all. The only way to "fix" the problem is to go to the toolbar with the content selected and change either the vertical or horizontal percentage to any number at all. As long as the proportion lock is in place, then that changes both % numbers to the same number, and thus fixing the problem. This is what makes me think it is a bug.
    Is there some new fitting setting in CS6 that I need to change?
    I have tried saving as IDML and importing back into CS6, but the behavior persists. Interestingly, if I change the fitting via the toolbar % "fix" and then select Fit Content to Frame (not proportionally), then Fit Content Proportionally is broken again, and does nothing at all.
    On most of my documents, Fit Content Proportionally works exactly as expected, and exactly as it always has. Of course my biggest "problem" documents contain large numbers of images.
    High Res Image:
    http://i.imgur.com/kl9jS.jpg

    This is a bug or a big enough change in behavior that it should come with a warning alert the first time you use it. I've replicated it across different 8.0.1 installs and (Mac) OSs.
    To replicate:
    Place graphic. I haven't seen a difference among placed graphic types.
    Resize the graphic frame non-proportionally.
    Object=>Fitting=>Fit Content to Frame, so that the content is scaled non-proportionally. (Or select the content and scale it non-proportionally.)
    Object=>Fitting=>Fit Content Proportionally. Nothing happens. (Or, if you scaled the content without fitting it in the previous step, the content may be centered, and it may be scaled, but the proportions won't be changed.)
    I suppose you could make an argument that this is more correct than the old behavior—the command now means "Fit without changing the proportions"—but it's a big change, and I doubt anybody wants it to work this way.
    Here's a short script that should more or less give the old behavior:
    function fit(item) {
      var i, l, graphic;
      if (item instanceof Group) {
        for (i = 0, l = item.pageItems.length; i < l; i++) {
          fit(item.pageItems[i].getElements()[0]);
      else if (item.hasOwnProperty("imageTypeName")) {
        item.horizontalScale = item.horizontalScale < 0 ? -100 : 100;
        item.verticalScale = item.verticalScale < 0 ? -100 : 100;
        item.fit(FitOptions.PROPORTIONALLY);
      else if (item.hasOwnProperty("graphics")) {
        for (i = 0, l = item.graphics.length; i < l; i++) {
          graphic = item.graphics[i];
          graphic.horizontalScale = graphic.horizontalScale < 0 ? -100 : 100;
          graphic.verticalScale = graphic.verticalScale < 0 ? -100 : 100;
          graphic.fit(FitOptions.PROPORTIONALLY);
    function main() {
      var i, l;
      if (!app.documents.length) {
        return;
      for (i = 0, l = app.selection.length; i < l; i++) {
        fit(app.selection[i]);
    app.doScript(main, ScriptLanguage.JAVASCRIPT, undefined, UndoModes.ENTIRE_SCRIPT, "Really Fit Content Proportionally");
    There are  certainly some corner cases I've left out. Let me know if you try to use it and it doesn't work right.

  • Smart Guides, Constrain Proportions and Resizing an Object.

    When I have Smart Guides on and I'm trying to resize an object while holding shift (to constrain) Indesign seems to ignore the shift key. Usually when there's other objects in close proximity, or just closely aligned, vertically or horizontally. The image I posted is a good example. Trying to resize the bracket object while near all those other objects results in a lot of skipping around, and constrain not working. You can see in the image the outline is not constrained, even though I'm holding the shift key. It just wants to jump to those Smart Guides regardless of what I'm trying to tell it to do.
    This isn't much of an issue, but basically I'm wondering if this is a bug, or if the Smart Guides, just take priority. It's bit annoying turning smart guides on and off constantly to accomodate this odd behavior. Does anyone have any insight on this?

    Hi,
    I'm on a Mac Snow Leopard/CS5, and there actually is an update I haven't installed yet. I'm on 7.0.3, so I'll try that out.
    If it is a bug it's certainly not the end of the world, but I was curious if anyone else had been dealing with it as well. I love the Smart Guides, except for that.

  • How to resize groups WITHOUT constraining proportions?

    If I have e.g. group 3 boxes and I want to change their width I have to do this one by one because if I group them I can't uncheck "Contrain proportions". This changed with Keynote 6, before that it was easily possible to change widths of objects in one group. To me that looks like a usability fail...

    If you had Keynote version 5 installed use that, it will still be in applications, in the  iWork 09 folder.

  • Magic move only for constrained proportions?

    Dear all,
    basically going nuts trying the same thing a lot of people did: animating charts. After finding out, that this is not possible in an easy way, I went even back to build the chart myself. In my case a line plot with two lines. I try to animate a change from one data-pattern to another (just 4 data points, hm?).
    After reading Apples description on magic move I thought that should work: just add two line shapes, duplicate chart, move the lines on the second chart, magic move, ready. Or? Doesn't work. By fiddling around a bit, I probably nailed it down: Because lines don't have a size (only start and end point), changing any endpoint position breaks the magic move. But even further: For all other shapes, magic move breaks as soon as you change it's size unproportional.
    Can anyone confirm that or propose a workaround? If this is true, Apple should definitely change the Keynote help text:
    +This transition only works when you use an identical image, shape, or text box in a different location or with a different size on the next slide.+
    They should mention, that it only work for proportionally resized shapes, which makes the tool pretty useless for a lot of cases.

    The workaround I use is to build slides with 'layers'. I cut my slide in photoshop into pieces and let the graph bar slide in from behind one of those pieces. I's a workaround, I know. And I'd really love to see the next release with build in layers, but with a little creativity and clever thinking you can come up with great results.

  • Indesign cs6, smart guides on, transform not proportional

    i use my smart guides a lot. i have found that when i go to transform an image using the direct select tool, and the cmd+shift function, the percentage of the scale is not consistant on teh x and y axis (they should be the same). i do have the "constrain proportions" active. i have tested without them being active. it seems, so far, the only time i can recreate the issue is when the smart guides are active.
    -osx 10.8.3
    -indesign cs6 (cloud subscription)

    -transform window open
    -constrain proportions active

    -select image within a frame with direct select tool (white arrow tool)
    -use shift+cmd and drag and scale, repeat (small and large areas)
    -repeat a few times and watch the horizontal and vertical percentages in the transform window. percentages will not be consistent after a few tries

    does anyone have any suggestions on a fix (other than turning off the smart guides)?
