Constructing Database Statistics

When and where should I use Database Statistics?  I'm trying to improve overall system performance.  Are there any cons to running this process?
Thank You All.

Yes BRCONNECT will collect DB stas on the tables as it determines appropriate based on monitoring criteria which actaull allows for DB stats to be refreshed based on some % of rows added to the table (default is 50%) since the last time stats were collected.
The Traffic light status of the performance tab simply checks to see if DB stats are missing on a fact or dimension table, setting the status to RED.  If the E fact table stats are more than 30 days old or 4 or more dimension table's stat are more than 30 days old, the status is set to yellow.  So yellow could mean your stats are really pretty accurate, or disastrously out of date.
I'd bring your DBA into the discussion so determeine the best course of action.
You can set the stats collection job in the performance tab to run automatically based on loads/deltas, or you could schedule the job to occur perhaps on weekends.  Better yet, setup a process chain to do it.  The main issue is probably whether you have time in your daily load window to refresh the stats.
If you set the option to collect stats after a load/delta, stats are only collected on teh F fact table and the dimension tables.  If you run the job yourself or schedule it, it will collect stats on both the F and E fact tables, the dimension tables, and all related master data tables.

  • DB statistics - Use of 'Construct Database Statistics ' in process chain

    Hello,
I would like to know the differences (or is it complementar ?) between:
    - using Business content Statistics cubes + Tools / BW statistics for infoproviders
    - variant 'Construct Database Statistics' that can be used in process chains
Have the 2 techniques to be used together ?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Thomas,
Statistics should get loaded in the Business content Statistics cubes .........now by using the process type 'Construct Database Statistics' we can automate the process............actually ...........The DB Statistics options for the InfoCube allow to collect current DB statistics about the tables associated with the InfoCube............the collection of statistics can be automated.........

  • When to use the "construct database statistics" process chain' item

    Hello, everybody.
    Information 1:
In our BW system we have a job from DBA guys that build statistcs for the entire database. This job runs every day in the dawn.
    Information 2:
In several process chain flows, we use the item "Construct Database Statistics" to update the statistics after cube upload.
    Information 3:
I checked the log from both jobs and found several tables analyzed in first and second cases.
    The question:
Is this step inside the process chain unnecessary? Exist any situation when this step is useful?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Construct Database Statistics - Oracle

At the moment I havent included a construct DB statistics step in my process chain. The three cubes are all loading more than a million records each time. But ive been told that as we are running on an Oracle database so I dont have to / or there is no benefit to this step. Is that true? Possibly due to something called BRCONNECT?

    Hi Sriram,
Calculating DB stat is probably mandatory  on any DB. You can use either the DB stat component in your process chain or the BR tool. SAP recommands to calculate the stat with this last tool (it calculates stats on all your db tables and not only the cube tables and have a lot of options).

  • Problem with Construct DB Statistics varaint in Process Chain.

    Hi Experts,
I try to create a variant Construct DB Statistics over Info Cube. my PC is as follows:
    1. Start
    2. Delete Index
    3. Load data into Info Cube (Full Load).
    4. Create Index
    5. Construct DB Statistics
    6. Delete Overlapping Requests from InfoCube  .
I got the error message: No type "Delete Index" process can be in front of process "Construct Database Statistics" variable XXXXX  in the chain
I* While  creating the  variant construct DB Statistics shall I take the object type as Info Cube  or  Info Package?*
Because when I use the InfoPackage   as the Object Type  I won't get any error message.
    I need the clarification that:
Shall we Construct the DB Statistics over Info Cube or  over the Info package?
    Any suggestions please.
    Thanks & Regards

We had the same problem.  This had to do with a support package.  Implement note 1122289 or BI Patch 17 (SAPKW70017).  This solved our problem.

  • Resolution to error - Unable to update Database Statistics

OK, If there's one thing i hate most about SAP, its the dreaded installation, I am always so paranoid, as to something will definitely go wrong,
Lately i realized that it aint my mind , but the damn installation itself is pretty damn stupid. Why cant SAP leave the installation packaging to professionals like installshield...
Unfortunately SAP doesnt think of it as a better idea, so until then lets try to resolve as many errors as possible thru these forums..
Here's one error resolution ,i am pretty sure, many are checking for..
Use the following procedure to resolve error
<b>Warning - "loading of sql client library oci.dll failed"
Error - Unable to update Database Statistics, Check BRCONNECT.log</b>
The problem seems to be with the SAP Patch Collection InstallMaster disc Material No.(<b>51032143_13</b>).
To resolve the problem, here's what needs to be done,
1)Install DB Instance as usual. Then after the installation errors out due to loading of sql
    client library oci.dll ..
2)I unsar the downloaded DBATOOLS.sar (Thanks for the Link Andreaz!!!)
log into sapnet (eg. service.sap.com) with your user-id/pwd:
-> downloads -> support packages and patches -> entry by application group -> additional
components -> sap kernel -> now chose either 32 or 64 bit; either unicode or non-unicode ->
sap kernel 6.40 -> windows server -> oracle -> download the package DBATOOLS Package for
Oracle 9.2.x ... brconnect is part of that package...
3)Copy the files in the Unsar'd package, as follows
         overwrite br*.exe to S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\run
         overwrite initSID.sap to S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\run &
    S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\nuc\NTI386
         overwrite libsbt.dll to S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\run &
    S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\nuc\NTI386
         overwrite sapdba_role.sql to S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\run &
    S:\usr\sap\R31\SYS\exe\nuc\NTI386
    4) Retry the installation again & Guess what!! it works....
Warning-: I initially tried a shortcut by replacing DBATOOLS.sar on the installmaster disc, rather than following above steps, but that doesnt seem to work, the installation fails as as soon as Tablespace creation starts. So the shortcut aint a good one..

Well, it looks like you resolved your problem yourself.
you can send feedback to SAP directly instead of posting this here in a forum.

update the statistics the optizer uses for making an execution plan.
    The statistics contains values like:
    table statistics:
    - nr of rows of the table
    - nr ob blocks / pages of the table
    - nr of empty blocks / pages
    index statistics:
    - nr of distinct keys in the index
    - nr of leaf pages of the index
    - clustering factor of the index
    - height (levels) of the index
    column statistics:
    - nr of distinct values for a (indexed) column
    - low value and high value for a (indexed) column

with updated statistics the runtime of the program might be
    - higher
    - lower
    - the same
it depends on the differences of the generated execution plan used after the update in
comparison with the execution plan used before the update.
In general the runtime will be the same or lower. But i have seen cases where updating
statistics lead to higher runtimes, but these are very rare.
Why are you asking this question? do you have slow sql with a inefficent execution plan?
statistics is one of many things that need to be analyzed...

  • Database Statistics Process slowed down

    Hi Experts
The Database Statistics Process usually used to take about 2000-3000sec. Now for the past few days i am observing that the database statistic is taking 5000-6000sec.
I have checked the job logs of both the jobs, there is no difference as such.
Please let me know what could be the reason for which it is taking so much of time these days.

  • BRCONNECT for Database Statistics

    Hi,
We have oracle 9.2 database with SAP 4.6B. We use BRCONNECT (6.20) for updating database Statistics. This takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete.
    Command used = brconnect -u / -c -f stats -t all -m +I -s P10 -f allsel,collect,method,precision -p 8
Could you please help, investigating the reason for such a long run?
Also, if any OSS notes need to applied.?
Please, let me know, if additional info needed..
    Thanks,
    Sam

    Hi,
Wondering if applying <u>OSS Note - 871455</u> could resolve this issue?
Is there any other command options, to avoid unnessary data collections by BRconnect could be thought of, to reduce the long runtime?
    Command used:
    brconnect -u / -c -f stats -t all -m +I -s P10 -f allsel,collect,method,precision -p 8
    Thanks,
    Sam
