  • Missing Contact Names - Only Numbers Showing - All Yahoo Contact Data Gone

The other day I did a sync and afterward in the phone tab, all my Favorites and Recents are displaying numbers and NOT the names of my contacts as they had always done before.
Further, if I click on the "Contacts" tab, there are only 10 contacts listed when before there were several hundred!
This was just a sync, no software update. I have tried several troubleshooting steps including:
    1. Checked my Yahoo account online to make sure all contact info still exists there, it does.
    2. Re-entered my Yahoo credentials in iTunes to make sure contact info was syncing. It accepted credentials as expected.
    3. I restored my iPhone using the latest backup (from a few days prior) with no luck.
    4. I restored my iPhone from a backup several months ago (July) and my contact names were back...but all my music, apps, photos, video, etc. was gone so I restored back to the most recent backup.
    5. I then imported all my Yahoo contacts into my Gmail account and then added my Gmail account to the phone in the hope that it would grab the contact names. Nope.
So now I'm stuck and looking for assistance from anyone who can offer my advice on what else I may try if anything. This seems to be a reoccurring issue with Yahoo contacts on the forums here as of late with different people experiencing slightly different behavior (like me having all numbers but missing names and other people having names but no numbers).
What's going Yahoo? What's going on Apple?
What's the fix, or at least a workaround???

    Update on the Gmail workaround:
Importing all my Yahoo contacts to Gmail and then choosing to sync Google/Gmail contacts in iTunes before syncing seemed to do the trick.
I think this is definitely a Yahoo contacts problem and not necessarily iPhone.
    Any thoughts?

  • I changed my sim card and contact names are gone in messages app.

When I changed my sim card to a Spanish one in messages app's contact names are gone. My contacts are in iphone not in sim card i can see them in contacts but the problem is number are showing in messages not the names.

The SIM is not involved. The iPhone does not save contacts to the SIM. Most likely when you restored the phone as a step in unlocking the phone you did not restore your most recent backup.

  • Imessage - Contact names & No.s gone

Since updating to Yosemite the only issue I have is that the contact name and photograph that was normally displayed in imessage against each contact has reverted to just the mobile number which makes is extremely difficult to use and follow conversations threads. Messages are received on phone and MAC as normal. Is this a Yosemite issue or is there a config I am missing to get the features back ?

Please try each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    Step 1
From the Messages menu bar, select
View ▹ Buddy Names ▹ Show Full Names (or Show Short Names)
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Language & Region
From the Region menu in the window, select one of the preset regions. If one is already selected, choose a different one, then change it back. Close the preference pane. Quit and relaunch Messages.
If you still have the problem after taking those steps, post your results.

  • IPhone not showing contacts names in text messaging after sync AND reset

Three days ago, I bought the iPhone 4S as an updgrade from the 3GS. I also transferred my wireless service plan from AT&T to Verizon. Since doing that, very strange things are happening. For example, my contacts appeared to transfer without a problem, but whenever I attempt a call to a number that does not have a "1" stored in front of it, it tells me that I am attempting a long-distance or international call and the call won't go thru unless I place a 1 in front of the number and store it that way. Also, whenever I send text messages and someone replies, their message comes back to my phone under the phone number only and not the name that is stored in my contacts. This happens even when the contact sends a direct message to me that is not a reply. (Imagine all the "Merry Christmas" messages I received yesterday that I have no idea who they were from, except the 5 out of 300 contacts whose numbers I have memorized!!) I have gone to the Apple Store and the "Genius" there reset my phone, which temporarily fixed the problem, but now it is back. I did a soft reset, now it randomly selects which names will show up in my text message window. (For example, yesterday, the name "Jane" shows a message that says "Merry Christmas", but after the reset, only Jane's number shows up in the text screen with the same message from yesterday.)
Does anyone know what in the world is going on?? This is Very Annoying! I'm tempted to go back to AT&T, as I am being told that the iphone technology, even for 4S, is not as compatible on Verizon as it is with AT&T. Please help!

Not sure about the random contact name problem. I suspect a bad database. Use iTunes to delete and replace your contacts with a good list. If that doesn't work, do a 100% software reset and don't restore a backup, setup as a new device. Finally, if that fails go back to the apple store. The issue is not software fixable and the unit should be replaced.
The other issue with 1 dialing required... are you roaming? Disable wifi, should say Verizon 3G in the status bar.
When you are off your home area cell network, you are not dealing with Verizon directly.
Edit: your last question about using a Verizon 4S on AT&T's network. You are correct, out of the box the Verizon 4S is locked to only work on Verizon's network. The AT&T 4S and Sprint 4S have the same locks. You can purchase an unlocked iPhone directly from apple. I've also heard of people convincing Sprint customer service to unlock their phones for use out of the country,

  • How to delete the contact name in iMessage memory on iphone5

Please help how can I delete the contacts name under iMessage memory?
Eg.: when I start to sent text messages to person name start with K which even contacts are already been deleted from my
            Contact list still pops up.

After MANY , MANY blogs and discussions and failed attempts I've figured this out. When you go to write a message the contact that was deleted still shows up next to the contact is a letter I with a blue circle all you have to do is tap it then it gives you the option to delete recent contact and lord behold that contact is permanently gone no back up syncing needed or anything !!!

  • Lost my Contact Names and Months of New Entries w/ iOS 4 Update--Any Help?

    Hi,
I updated to iOS4 yesterday and after it was done all my contact names were gone. The numbers were all in there, just no names. I don't use Mobile Me for my contacts.
Checking my iPhone sync settings on my Mac for some reason "sync contacts" with Address Book was no longer checked in iTunes. It looks like it was that way for some time, which is unusual as that's the method I use to backup my contacts. No idea how that got switched, as I wouldn't have changed that. Don't think MobileMe troubleshooting had me turn it off after a Calendar duplication issue. Wouldn't make sense.
Also, I don't know why the update to a new OS would make me LOSE ALL my contact names. Why would the update be designed that way and not retain everything?
Now my computer has an old contact list and I've lost months of new contacts, phone numbers, emails and contact organization. Pretty bummed. Not sure why that box wasn't checked and the phone backup system is absolutely no help at all as, by design, iTunes only saves ONE backup of your phone at a time, and after the operating system updates to iOS4, it immediately and automatically backs up the phone with the new settings, writing over the real backup with the data you might want to return to.
Restored it from backup today to see if it'd repopulate the names, but no, it went to the backup it took AFTER the iOS4 update. It even erased the new spelling of someone's name that I put into the phone last night!
Why is this upgrade process designed without more safeties in mind, Apple? Not sure how that happened but clearly grandmothers and others might have a snafu and need to go back to an earlier backup. Can't iTunes backup the last 3 or 5 versions, or just note the differences so getting back lost data is easier? Happened a few years back, an iPhone I was using that went bad, but iTunes backed up the corrupted information in its single backup so that the last few weeks of entries, etc., got lost. Any way to get wireless syncing of the phone in the future like with Time Capsule or something, indexing at least a few multiple backups by date or something?
Clearly all the names were on the phone in their entirety immediately before the update, but then poof! Anything I can do about it now? Any ideas, folks?
    Thanks.

Try a hard reset right now and see if they disappear.
Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for 10 seconds until you see white Apple logo on the screen. Wait for the phone to restart and see if the contacts are fixed.

  • Is it possible to uninstall OS Mountain Lion and go back to OS Lion?  This upgrade has been a headache! Mail freezes, all contacts all gone and I am unable to import them again.  HELP?

I recently downloaded and install OS Mountain Lion on my iMac.  Consequently none of the new mail features are available and everytime I attempt to check for new mail or send mail, the mail app freezes and has to be forced closed.  Also, all of my contacts are gone, and I am unable to import them back.  And I just discovered that all of my calendar items are missing too.  Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

Thank you for the tip, Andreas. That is exactly what I did for my iPad, and it works like a charm. Unfortunately, when I try to set up my Gmail accounts in Mountain Lion using Exchange services, I receive the following error after putting in m.google.com in the server address field:
The Exchange server "(null)" is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable.
I know this works for iOS, but it seems like this will not work on Mac OS X.
    Any other suggestions? Thank you.

  • My works ip4 will not display contact names in my fav's and only has stored email contact addresses in contacts

My works IP4s has developed a problem. my Favourite contacts appear as numbers instead of names. if i try to re-create they will not store. also my contacts in the contacts have gone leaving only those with an email address. I have tried shutting down etc and re-inserting sim. but problem persists.

This is inevitably caused by duplicate entry, (many posts already exist) check settings in options in contacts and make sure memory in use is phone memory. Then you need to go through contacts and make sure you don't have more than one name attached to each number  .
    Good Luck

  • Contact names do not appear when composing an email

When I click to compose an email, names of my contacts do not appear when I start typing ...only email addresses...and they look shaded out.  I have gone into contacts and confirmed that names are all correct, and looked through other discussions, but usually this seems to happen with text messages.  I don't ahve a problem with the contact names appearing when I text...only when I try to compose a message.  Its very annoying because I don't always remember people's email - I'd like to just start typing their name and ahve the contact appear.  Iphone 5.

    Hi there basecampmason,
I would recommend force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • POP3 Mail & Address Book contacts have gone!

I recently did some housekeeping on my Mum's iBook G4 (OSX 10.4.10), part of which was purchasing and installing SpamSieve into Mail. This all went fine. Today she said all the mail in her POP3 inbox had gone, she couldn't send/receive and all her address book contacts had gone (Except hers and Apples).
I've got the iBook now and have noticed that her account type in Mail has somehow changed to a .Mac account (did I somehow do this, or did she???). This is obviously the root of the problem as the
email address now has '@mac.com' appended to the end and the incoming mail server is now 'mail.mac.com' and the outgoing is 'smtp.mac.com:heremailaddress' which is all wrong. I'm unable to change the account type back to POP or the incoming mail server from 'mail.mac.com' (it's greyed out) back to what it was.
I have now created a second account with the correct POP settings and have received in all unread email, but the read email messages have gone. I am unable to send as the new correct pop account is only offered the incorrect outgoing server ('smtp.mac.com:heremailaddress').
Having read several post on this forum, I feel the Mail/Address Book issues are connected and that maybe the application(s) database(s) have been corrupted. I've tried the Address Book remedy at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5248351&#5248351 but this does nothing. The 'user'>Library>Mail folder shows the two accounts as two separate folders. The recently recreated account folder has the new unread messages in the 'INBOX.mbox folder, but the older account folder (which now has 'MAC-' added to the front of its name) only has 'info.plist' in a 'INBOX.imapmbox' folder!
I don't believe any back-ups are available. Can anyone help me restore her old unread mail, and possibly her address book contacts?
I've also just noticed that SpamSieve does not launch as it should when I launch Mail, even though It was purchased and the scripts installed correctly.

Didn’t you make a backup prior to the housekeeping?
I don’t know why would Spotlight find contacts that are gone from Address Book (if that’s what you mean), but as far as Mail goes, under some circumstances (e.g. lack of available disk space, filesystem corruption, repeated crashes), Mail may discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. This file is where all the account settings are stored. As a result, all the non-.Mac account settings (but not the messages themselves) are lost. If you had a .Mac account, its settings would appear to have been preserved because Mail would set up that account automatically using the System Preferences > .Mac settings.
What’s the capacity and space available on the startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
    You have three options now:
    (1) Restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your mail accounts again (you may want to quit Mail and trash the new com.apple.mail.plist first to start over). If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try trashing the new com.apple.mail.plist and renaming the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Given the circumstances, there exists the possibility that com.apple.mail.plist.saved became corrupt, but that often is not the case and the settings can usually be restored by just renaming the file back to com.apple.mail.plist.
As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

I'm on an iPhone 4 and I'm running iOS 5.1.1

  • I went to make a phone call today and all my contacts are gone - poof!

I need to recover them as they were not in itunes or anywhere else.  Some of them were in my phone only.  They were copied into my iphone 2 years ago from my flip phone.  There are contacts in there from 5 + years ago.
    HELP!!!

    FYI:
The same identical thing happened to me on a new iPhone 4S. Call came in, name & number showed on the screen, hit answer, screen went black, phone turned off. Turned it back on, all contacts were gone. But, it was simple for me to restore them. Point being, this stuff can/does happen to anyone, and at anytime. That's why you have redundant backups.

The problem is originated from apple itself and should be resolved by apple as well. Is it too much to ask?
I would like to try and put into perspective this statement you've made about 'Apple'., Your contacts were at a point in time on your 'Apple' iphone. That is a given as you would not now be asking about why they have disappeared. To say that at a given point and time they were there and now they are not and THEN to blame apple for this inconsistency is for me at least just a bit much.
So now after me expressing my opinion on your comments lets see if we can't put together some trouble shooting to see if we can't get to your contacts.
IF your contacts were saved to icloud they are still in the icloud only gone from your device. Please read this article about how to use icloud and how to get icloud to send your contacts back to your phone in which they once resided.
