Contact / proof sheets WITH FILENAMES

I have read all the postings on this topic and I simply can't believe that the programmers who coded iPhoto could have left out this OBVIOUS necessity of any photo management software.
I have almost 500 photos. The standard iPhoto contact sheet is WORTHLESS without filenames. I have read the workarounds . . . . "print one screen at a time"???? Please . . . .
Does anybody from Apple monitor these boards?? Come on guys, how about a real fix for this obvious problem with iPhoto???

Proof prints with filename, batch, automate? help!!

I am 'action' and 'script' challenged...trying to find a way to automate batch processing of printing 4x6 inch proofs (jpegs to local print lab) with the filename from the EXIF info on them in the lower right corner. I can get exactly what I want with a 'picture package' action, but once flatted, it won't save to another folder, just sits on the desktop.... I have Win XP, CS2 and 4, and LR2 - Thank you!!

You're in luck. You can use the Object > Captions > Caption Setup to pick Name as the metadata. Then when you place the file turn on Import Options and check Create Static Captions.
You also can create dynamic captions which pull other metadata from the images but it doesn't sound like that's what you need.

Making Proof Sheets.....

I am a ametuar photographer that likes to just take pics..... BUT i was asked by a local board shop to take pictures of thier local mountain boarding event in like a month. I want to be able to provide proofs to those who ask for them. this is what i want to do,
1.) see if i photo would let me (degrade) resolution and print say 6-8 pics on a page......
2.) find a way to degrade print quality to upload the web for a site for viewing or ordering purposes.
3.) or be pointed into the direction of software that would let me do mulitple prints at a lower quality!
I shoot with a Nikon D70s and in Raw format. I use iphoto only for library purposes

An easy way to produce a proof sheet with file names underneath each photo (the Contact Sheet print option does not give you this option) is to do the following.
1 - set your background in the Organize window to white.
2 - set the size of the thumbnail size to what the size that you want.
3 - take a screen shot of just the Organize window area (I use SnapZ which will let you select a give area. Or you can use Grab located in your Applications/Utilties folder). Then print the screen shot file. You can only get as many photos on a sheet as your can get on your screen so it may take a few screen shots.
Another way is:
Creating Contact Sheet with Titles
1 - Put the files you want to print in an album and arrange in the order you'd like.
2 - Go to the File->Export->Web Page menu option.
3 - While in the Web page window, select the number of thumbnails you'd like across each page (iPhoto will keep you informed on how many pages it will take).
4 - Click on Show Title under thumbnails and click on Export. Then select the location where you'd like the resulting files to be saved (create a temporary folder to contain them).
5 - Once saved, go the folder and open the index.html file with your browser. You will get a page with your thumbnails and titles beneath them.
6 - Print that browser page and you've got your contact sheet with file names (or comments if desired).
If you want more control over the thumbnail gallery, try using BetterHTMLExport or Galerie.
This will give you more photos per page than the screenshot method.

Contact sheet with variable rows/columns

I'm interested in an InDesign Contact Sheet script/plug-in that is capable of creating a contact sheet with variable rows and columns, allowing amages to be placed at 100%. For example, say I have 20 images all of various dimensions. I'd like to place each one on an ID page at 100% while fitting as many on a single page as possible. So if one of the images was 8in x 10in then it would be the only image on the page, assuming a page size of 8.5 x 11. If smaller images were included in the same batch though, they would be placed as many across and as many down as could fit. Any images larger than the select page size would scale to fit on the page.
All of the existing solutions I've found so far force you to choose the number of rows and columns and then images are scaled to meet those requirements.
Does anyone know if such a solution is out there?

A stand-alone app that can do the same thing, essentially create scatter proofs, may work as well. If anyone knows of such a thing I'd be interested to hear.

Contact sheet with Photoshop CS5 Windows 7

As I tried to make some contact sheets with Photoshop CS5, I found that this functions disappeared from the "Automatization" menu (I had it in Photoshop CS3)
How could I do ? Is there some special "plugin" to do that ?

which includes the old contact sheet II, but please READ the instructions before installing.

Contact Sheet with Photo ID?

Hello fine folks,
I want to print out the contents of a photo album onto a contact sheet. Bingo ... iPhoto gives me that option.
But a digital contact sheet without photo file numbers is pretty much useless. Is there any way to print a contact sheet that contains the photo file name?

There are a couple of workarounds to get a contact sheet with title.
1 - Create a gallery with the File->Export->Web Page menu option and select the option for titles in the gallery page. You can set the number of columns and other info. You don't have to worry about the media pages as you won't be using them. Then open the resulting galley page in Safari and print from there. There's a free 3rd party application,Galerie, that will produce a much nicer gallery page that the default iPhoto one. There's also BetterHTMLExport which has some terrific themes and lots of control.
2 - Create an iPhoto book using the Year Book theme. You can have from 1 to 32 pictures per page and the titles will automatically be put below each photo. Then start a print of the book but actually save it as a pdf file. Then you can use preview to print individual pages.The caveat to this method is that the pages will be in landscape orientation.

Building contact sheets with CS5

I am trying to build contact sheets with Bridge in CS5. The feature works great except if you have an odd number of images, the last of the images are built into the contact sheet at a much larger size and not kept proportional to the first images in the contact sheets ie: if you are building 8x11 contact sheets with 18 images and you want 8 images per sheet, the first two sheets are great and the last sheet with the final 2 images have the images at a much larger size relative to the first 16 images. Is there a way to have bridge maintain the correct image proportion on all contact sheets short of creating "dummy" images that divide by 8 for instance giving you an equal number?

How to print contact sheet with file names

I want to print a photo contact sheet with file names. Is this possible with any standard Mac app?

I'd like to print the Album name at the top of each contact sheet I produce from that album - is this possible within iphoto '08 or do I need to print to a pdf and then edit that pdf with acrobat pro for example.

Missing images in proof sheets!

Hi all, I am a professional photographer based in South Africa, with some 20 odd years of experience in medium and large format photography. Since converting to "digital" some time back, I made the decision to use LR for my cataloging and raw conversions. I have been on the Lightroom Bandwagon since the first 1.0 beta, and consider myself to be reasonably capable, although every now and then an issue, normally related to the printing function, leaves me scratching my head and threatening to change to another workflow!! My current problem is that every now and then, when making proof sheets for clients, one or two images "go missing"!! It seems to be totally random, the file names are printed on the contact sheet, but the image is a blank white box! It shows up ok on the LR Print Preview as well as the Printer preview. I am using Epson R2400 and R 270 and is the same on both machines. The problem is that it does not seem consistent, usually on top row of images, but occasionaly in middle, and sometimes not at all!
I have "fixed" the dark and muddy prints issues I encountered in LR1... as well as the double color managment issues that took me ages to understand, and now am back to making proofs in Photoshop as I cant redo every second proof sheet thatcomes out of LR

I am wondering if possibly the Preview folder has gotten overburdened and is causing the anomalies you describe in contact sheets. An easy test would be to create a new catalog for your next run. If that proves to be the case, you could then delete the Previews folder on your main catalog and fold the test catalog into it.

Printing photos using proof sheet format?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

How to create a pdf proof sheet?

I wish to create a proof sheet of all the graphics, mostly .ai with .pdf preview, in my job.
I have been through Adobe's Bridge Output module tutorial, but there are whole parts of the interface missing in my version of CS4 Bridge for Mac.
There is no sign of the header, footer or pages fields for example.
Has anyone got this to work?

Can you create a smaller photo file to send to my clients like in a proof-sheets style?

Hello photographers, i have a question about sharing a file ;Some of my clients's photos files of about 300 photos take about 3 GB space. How do you share them with clients? Dropbox needs 2 days to downloadand and not user friendly; YouSendIt allows only 2 GB per file, and zipping the file takes the download about 7 hours. How do make a smaller file, reducing size but still being big enough to view details of the photos? is there a way to make a proof-sheet? or is there a photo librairy that can be shared temporarely with the client? anyone with feedback please? Thank you.

The camera roll is not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing these photos to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera. Youc an organize them on your computer and sync the to the iphone if you wish.
The photos sync from the computer to the iphone is one way.
The iphone mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.

Sorry if this is off topic. Does anyone know of a Mac program that can make a proof-sheet-like image from a video file? Like a large image with thumbnails from the video?

Don't know of one that will create such a consolidated output sheet, but QT Pro (or applications accessing QT export capabilities) can create a sequence of video frames which can then the manipulated (manually sized and laid out) by other applications.

ITunes 6.0.1.3 not syncing Outlook Contacts or Calendar with ipod Nano 4GB

I have Outlook 2003 installed and setup with a Microsoft Exchange Server. I have about 200 contacts currently stored in it.
I recently purchased a ipod nano 4gb with hopes of syncing my contacts and calendar with that and being able to throw away my old Palm. The ipod nano works great for syncing music but I can't get it to sync either the calendar or contacts from outlook.
I check the box for syncing contacts and choose Microsoft Outlook from the drop down. Then iTunes only gives me the option of syncing all contacts (which is fine with me) and I click Okay. Then I choose update from the ipod nano right click menu. The status bar says updating contacts but does not import any of my contact to my ipod. Also, except for the 1st time, the Permission Window asking for access to Outlook has not popped up again. When it did that first time, I was told that there was an error and itunes could not copy contacts over. Since then there have been no errors from iTunes.
I have tried all the steps in the apple online help docs (unchecking boxes, restarting, re-checking, etc..) but can't find a solution. I don't want to have to manually Save As each calendar item and contact. Frankly, I'd rather just return the device.
Can anyone help me?

Possible. It is just odd that the day before the update to 9.x.x (I forgot the release), it worked great. Following that upgrade, the sync died. I could reinstall the old release (per instructions from Apple Tech Support) and it would sync. However, not upgrading your iTunes means not upgrading your OS...and that is not an option. However, I think I will have XP reistalled on my machine...and then put a fresh install on iTunes...and see what happens.
