Contact vs phone contacts; Google Android vs Motorola vs HTC vs Samsung

My Droid 2 contact came from several sources.  Verizon downloaded by Motorola E815 phone contacts and my contact information from an old HTC XV6800.  I downloaded other contacts from Outlook and from my HP Palmtop 200LX.  All of this made for a pretty awful database since some of the databases only had a single name field.  As I tried to correct many of the entries, I got a ton of "Forced closed" messages which was quite annoying, but I quickly learned that it was my contact database which was the culprit.  The contact and phone databases have requirements for the type of characters that are allowed in the fields.  If the import file has the wrong type of characters in the fields into which the data are imported, you get a "forced closed" error. After cleaning up all the fields, the "forced closed" problem went away.
In the process of cleaning up my contacts, I also noticed at the bottom of each listing there is an entry called 'Linked Profile' with a number in parenthesis following.  The number 1 means that this is the only profile for this person. The number 2 would mean a second profile exists.  This second profile could be within your contacts database or your phone contact data base.  If you had a higher number there, there could be additional entries within the same database - say one entry of First Name, Last Name and another of Last Name, First Name.  I had some with 7 entries and believed that these also contributed to my 'forced closed' messages.  I decided to unlink each one and found that many of them had only names and phone numbers.  These, I believe, came from the import of my old phone database that had been backed up to Verizon's Backup Assistant.  There were a few entries which consisted of a name and email address or two.  Some with just an email address.
After cleaning up the database and trying to learn about other features on the Droid 2, I decided to ensure my data was being backed up in my Gmail contacts as well as Verizon's Backup Assistant.  When I logged into the latter site, I found over 500 deleted addresses.  It seems that all those entries which contained only phone numbers that I deleted from my Droid2 were really phone contacts and were deleted from the Backup Assistant database (they were not totally deleted and I could undelete them if I wanted.)  I would have thought though that the remaining entries in my contacts are much more complete with complete home and work addresses , phone numbers, email address, IM address, company names, titles, nicknames, Websites, ringtones and whether to send the call straight to voicemail.  However, none of these contacts were backed up the Verizon Backup Assistant.  They were backed up to my Gmail contacts.  I have my Droid 2 scheduled to sync with Google's gmail, gmail contacts and calendar, as well as the Verizon Backup Assistant.  My first question is why doesn't the Verizon Backup Assistant back up ALL contacts?
With the Droid 2, if you select the Dialer icon from the full list of programs, it brings up a keypad with a search bar above and 4 Icons on the top - Dialer, Recent calls, Contacts and Favorites.  By the way, clicking on the Favorites icon allows you to select your favorites.  After clicking the Contacts or Favorites icon, If you long press the menu icon on the bottom left, you then have the option searching your contacts, clearing the frequently called list or setting up your speed dial.  It appears to be the only ways to set up the speed dial.  Once set up, you can see the assigned speed dial numbers in the entries for those people in your Favorite list.  To dial them just click the dialer icon and long press the speed dial number for the contact you want to call.  If you remember the numbers by heart, just go right to the dialer and long press the correct number.  My next question is at first I had no trouble in setting up the Favorites or the Speed dial, but lately, when I long press the menu icon, it brings up the electronic keyboard.  The only way to bring up any options is to open the sliding keyboard, shifting the screen to landscape mode.  Pressing the menu icon will then bring up the choices mentioned above.  I noticed this occurring within other applications so I believe it is a software problem cause by interactions with other software or a recent update.  It seems to be intermittant, corrected momentarily by opening the sliding keyboard, but after a couple of minutes reverts back to the problem mode.
Getting back to the contacts issue, if you select the Contact icon when the Dialer is opened, while many of the contacts that come up are from the Phone Contact database AND are not VIEWABLE when you select the Contact icon on the Home Page.  In fact, I have two entries for myself, one with nickname and last name; the other full legal name (first middle and last).  Only the one with the nickname shows up in viewing my contacts in the Verizon Backup Assistant.  This entry is also found in my main Contacts database on the Droid 2.  The entry with my full legal name is not in the Verizon Backup Assistant database.  This entry is only viewable from my phone contacts on the Droid2.  It does not show up as a Gmail contact and is not viewable on my main contact database.   It is also not the first time that my own entry has disappeared.  Can anyone explain this?
I have been reading the forum entries on various subjects regarding contacts with most folks focusing on Google's lack of design.  However, my wife has an HTC Incredible which also runs Android 2.2.  However, its contact system is totally different from Motorola's, as is LG's and Samsung.  These systems have the ability to enter data into either the phone database or the contacts database starting from scratch.  With Motorola's system the only way to enter a new entry into the phone database is start by keying in a phone number first.  This is confusing to the average user who is typically shown by Verizon people how to add entries to the main contact database.  All these systems allow for the entry to be displayed either the last name, first name mode or in the first name, last name mode.  Take aim at Motorola, not Google.  There may be some aspects of the contact system that are controlled by Android, but the sorting of the database and the ease of making entries is not an Android-specific problem.
Next question, with my Bluetooth earphone paired and connected, it takes almost 30 seconds between the pushing of the center button on the Bluetooth for the Droid2's voice command to say "Say a command", to which I respond, "Call Joe Smith mobile" or some other command.  It was instantaneous with my old Motorola E815.  This kind of delay is totally unacceptable.  Does anyone have a clue about why it takes so long?

Keep in mind, each source that you are importing contact information from has its own platform and technology being used which can be different than the platform on the device. Based on the multiple topics that you bring up, and to ensure that I address your concerns fully, please send me a private message with your Verizon Wireless cell phone number, a callback number where I can reach you, and the best time to contact you.  You will want to provide a call back number since you will need to be off of your device when we talk.

As explained above, you purchased the Wifi-only model.  The 4g is not available yet, but is rumored to be arriving soon at a much larger price.
The two devices may share the same case, but yours (and mine) have no cellular radio in them!

  • Syncing both "Contacts" contacts and "Phone" contacts to iCloud

I have an iPhone 4, and when tryig to upload my contacts from my phone to iCloud I noticed some were missing. I went through my phone and found some of my contacts are in the "Contacts" app, and others are in the "Phone" app. How do I get all of these together and onto iCloud, or at least all into one app on my iPhone?
When I attempt to sync my phone contacts to iCloud it only transfers the contacts from the "Phone" app, leaving all the contacts in the "Contacts" app behind.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if this will work or not, but you could try something like this:
Put your phone in airplane mode so it does not connect to the internet (and to iCloud)
Restore your iTunes backup as before.
When completed, go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts to Off.  If prompted, choose Delete from My iPhone.
If you have only a few contacts on icloud.com, you can just copy them down to re-enter later.  If you have many contacts on icloud.com, download them as a vCard file to your desktop as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4910, under "Contacts...iCloud.com Contacts".
    Delete all contacts on icloud.com.
Turn off airplane mode to allow your phone to connect to icloud.
Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to On and choose Merge when prompted.  Your recovered contacts should now be in iCloud.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section) and confirm that it is set to your iCloud account.  If you don't have this setting you can skip this step.
If you downloaded contacts from icloud.com as a vCard in step 4, email this file to yourself, open the email on your phone and tap the attachement to import these back to your phone and to iCloud.
If iTunes does not allow you to restore the backup while the phone is in airplane mode just leave airplane mode off and restore nomally.  When the restore process begins to restore your apps on the phone, perform step 3, then wait until the restore process finishes to complete the remaining steps.

  • Different sort for Z10 contacts and phone contacts

Hi, I need my contacts sorted by last name, rather than the first name default. I changed the sort order in the standrad contact list and this worked as expected. But: In the phone contact list, sorting is still by first name - and I found no setting to change the sort order. I'd expect that the contact list is sorted identically in both contexts, but seems not to be. Any idea? Thanks!

    Hello,
I too noticed some challenges with PUSH and Contact/Calendar sync (in my case, with Hotmail/Outlook.com via active sync). I found that it was better to turn off PUSH and instead let it manually synchronize at my chosen interval. Since I use a different provider for email, changing that doesn't affect my configuration for email, and that continues to PUSH via that account.
We are all hoping that this issue, and all others, get resolved in future OS updates. But for now, I recommend defeating PUSH and instead configuring for interval-based synchronization.
    Good luck!

  • Google grabs phone contacts

this may may be wrong forum but i'll start here.
i notice on my google email account web interface under "contacts" all my phone contacts from my cell phone are there. i just noticed this as it wasn't an issue with blackberry.
is there a way to not have google auto grab so much data from my phone and put it on my google web account?

Your phone is tied into your gmail account, you should have noticed this when you first activated the phone.  They are saving your contacts as just that... contacts.  That being said, any time you input a new contact you can choose to save them as gmail contacts or phone contacts.  Anything saved as a phone contact will not be backed up to your gmail account.
Very weird. I can't see this reply on the mobile site, but it quite visible on the desktop.
If one is willing to deal with the extra time to save the contacts as a phone only contact and then manually transfer them between devices, I guess that is their choice for phone management.

  • How to secure the phone contacts of Asha and other...

Phone contacts are very important assets. It is always advisable to take regular backup of important data for safety.
Here are the different methods to secure your contacts and solutions to solve common contacts problems.
    1. Using your phone's sync-and-backup option
To backup the phone contacts using your phone,
go to settings, sync-and-backup, create backup. Mark the contacts and neccessary items you need for backup.
Note: Creating backup doesn't work without memory card.
    2. Using Nokia suite
Install the latest version of Nokia suite from here.
Connect your phone to PC using data cable(set Nokia suite mode on phone) or via bluetooth.
Launch the Nokia Suite, open contacts and follow these:
    2A. Using drag and drop
You can simply drag and drop the contacts to a folder of your computer as shown:
You can also drag and drop contacts from the PC folder back to Nokia suite.
2B. Using Backup/Restore option of Nokia Suite
To backup or restore using Nokia suite, go to tools-backup/restore.
    2C. Using the sync option
You can sync your phone contacts to Nokia suite by default, as well as with Microsoft Outlook.
To sync your contacts to Outlook, open Nokia suite, go to sync-sync options and select Microsoft Outlook in contacts as shown:
After syncing, the contacts of your phone will be copied to both Nokia suite and Microsoft Outlook:
Note: Creating or deleting any contacts in any one of the locations like either phone or Nokia suite or Outlook,  updates the same changes in the remaining two places.
It is highly recommended to use drag and drop method to backup contacts instead of sync for simplicity.
    3. Common problems with contacts and solutions
    3A. Avoiding repeated contacts.
You might have copied all the phone conatcts to SIM card as a backup, but the contacts will be shown twice.
When you have similar contacts in both the SIM card as well as phone, you can change the settings such that either of the SIM contacts or phone contacts are only visible, for this, go to contacts-settings-memory in use and change it to either phone or SIM card.
3B. Deleting the either only SIM or phone contacts.
You can always delete either SIM or phone contacts. Go to contacts-delete all contacts and select either SIM card or phone.
3C. Deleting repeated contacts using PC.
Sometimes the contacts will be repeated in the phone memory itself. To fix this, drag and drop your contacts to a folder and delete all the contacts having parenthesis () as shown:
Now you can delete all the contacts of the phone and copy(drag and drop) the non repeated contacts from the PC back to phone.
    4. Recovering the contacts from a corrupted backup file of the phone using PC
There are situations when restoring data fails due to corrupted backup file.
    To solve this,
    A. Connect the memory card to PC using a card reader.
    B. Enable the hidden folders and extension in view or in the folder options, go to memory card/backup folder and copy the .NBF file to your PC.
    C. Change the extension of the backup file from .NBF to .ZIP.
    D. After renaming, the backup file can be extracted using any compression applications like WinRar or default ZIP manager.
    E. The contacts of the backup file can be found at
    \Backup000\predefhiddenfolder\backup\WIP\32\contacts.
These contact files can now be copied back to your phone using Nokia suite(using drag and drop method).

  • Deleted phone contacts...Help!

I am new to the iphone and have the iphone5s. I have only had the phone for a couple of weeks and didn't install any backup to icloud. While trying to install my email contacts , my phone contacts were deleted. Is there any way to get them back???
P.S. I have now installed the cloud...Better late then never, I guess...

Yikes! I regret to learn that the contacts have been deleted. Did you have them backed up previously with the Backup Assistant? If so, go to vzw.com/backupassistant to ensure that they are saved there. If they are, go to the App Store and download the Backup Assistant application, run it to restore the contacts.
Here is how to backup with iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1382

  • I need to sync my contacts from I cloud to android Phone?

How do I sync my existing contacts from Iphone/ I Cloud to an android phone?

You can use an app like My Contacts Backup to back up your contacts as a vCard that you email to yourself.  You would then need to find a process to import them to your android phone.  Once option is to set up a Gmail account and import them to Google contacts.  You could then sync them to your phone from Google.

  • How to send Motorola Phone Contacts to Mac

Can someone tell me how to send my phone contacts to my Address book via BT?
Also, as a bonus question, does anyone know how to send mp3 songs to my Motorola V360? (It's essentiall the same phone as the RAZR)
    Thanks for your thoughts.

With iSync I synchronize my phone book with the address book. At first you have to configure the V3 RAZR that it is 'known' in the Mac and also the Mac as a known device in the MOTO. And then you have to agree to any action such as a file transfer.
Pictures and mp3 files are sent to the MOTO with a click at the BT symbol above in the right corner near the speaker icon choosing the 'Send File ...' submenue.

  • IPhone 6, manual sync of contacts and calendar with Google?

I usually prefer a manual sync of things like contacts and calendar with Google, rather than an automatic periodic sync. I don't change my calendar or contact list very often, so manual sync works best for me. I could do this with Android, but with iOS if I sync contacts and calendar with Google, and then turn off that syncing, iOS wants to remove my Google contacts and Google calendar events from my phone. So I seem to have no choice, either auto-sync, or no Google contacts and calendar events at all.
Does anyone out there know of a way to manually sync my Google contacts and calendar events when I want to?
How often does the Google calendar and contacts sync get done? Maybe it isn't an issue, if it only does a sync when I change my Google contact list or Google calendar?
Anyways, I really don't like automatic, periodic syncing to a web site happening on my phone if I don't need them to happen.
    Thanks.

I can help you with your calendar problem.
You'll need to export your calendar from google into iCal, and then start making all your changes to your iCal calendar.
I wrote up the procedure with some screenshots here!
    http://take-a-tech-tip.blogspot.com/2011/10/icloud-moving-google-calendars-to.ht ml
    I hope it helps.
About your contacts, I'm not sure I'd be able to give you good instructions since I haven't done the whole procedure myself. I did however, have my Address Books contacts synced with Google.
This post might help you. It talks about moving Google Contacts to your Address Book.
    http://take-a-tech-tip.blogspot.com/2011/09/iphone-google-contacts-sync-and.html
That should get your contacts from Google to your address book. Then, you can set up iCloud to have your contacts synced, and that should put them to iCloud. You can check by going to icloud.com and seeing if it worked. Then, I imagine you would have to disable the Google syncing with your Address Book (if I remember correctly, your computer will tell you it has to do this once you enable iCloud syncing for contacts).
