Contact Work/Home Email Information Lost in Sync

Hi all,
At first I thought I was losing my mind, but I've been through it several times and can confirm that this is what i experience:
1) Go to the effort of categorising contacts' emails as either "home" or "work" on the iphone.
2) Syncing via iTunes (Windows XP Pro, Outlook 2003). Email addresses are synced.
3) The next time a sync is done, the addresses are retained, but all email addresses are flagged as "other" on the iPhone.
It's not a big problem, but annoying if you got the effort of doing it only to have the sync undo it!
I presume it's got something to do with Outlook storing emails as "email 1" email 2" etc?
Anyone know of a workaround?
Cheers

I lost a significant number of contact e-mail addresses due to this sync bug. The contacts had multiple email addresses listed (home and work at least) and after syncing I am left with one e-mail address per contact and that address is now flagged as "other" rather than work or home. This is really unacceptable functionality. I don't know how to store more than one email address per contact and maintain a sync'ed backup on my computer.
Steps to reproduce are as described by ScottMozz in the first post for this issue, but I wanted to add detail on how data was lost during the sync.

In my address book, I have contacts that have multiple email addresses.  (ex:  home and work)   I have created a smart group off of the company name in the contact.  When I send emails, I want it to go to both email address listed in the contact.  Is there a way to make this happen?  Or do I have to have a separate contact for each email address?

I will agree with you on this one. Version 31 and all the fixes so far are a mess. Since I have been here answering questions for a little more than a year now I have learned to wait to upgrade until all the dust settles. I see no end to the dust storm version 31 has caused. I am still on version 24.6 and plan on staying there for the duration. At least until the developers comes to their senses and put out a working product.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless you have the contacts backed up somewhere, you won't be able to restore them.
You and your son should have your own iCloud accounts then you can keep your own contacts and calendars etc and avoid deleting each others.

  • HT204150 We have multiple phones active in the home sharing.   When I sync my phone all of the other phones share contact information.  Is there a way to have each phone keep there contacts without sharing?

Is there a way to have contacts stay exclusive to each phone after syncing?

I don't even see the iMessage option on my iPad anywhere. Maybe it needs to be updated?
Does this have anything to do with iCloud or just iMessage?

  • Work or Home email address

How do I change the settings for how it displays what email address or phone number it is on a contact? For example, in microsoft Outlook I have multiple email and phone numbers for one contact for work, home, cell, other, etc. They are correct in the Outlook program as far as which address or phone they are but they show incorrectly in the contacts list on iphone.
I was bored flying home recently from a trip and manually changed all the contacts in the iphone to the correct information. As soon as I got home and synced they all changed back to incorrect.
    Any help??

To change the property heading for a contact phone number or email, first find that contact in you contact list.
Once viewing the contact information, tap on edit at the top.
Tap on the property you want to edit.
Here you can change the property title to any preset or a custom title.
Also, try creating a test contact on your iphone and see if it syncs back to your computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Contact email type changed when syncing

    hello!
i have quite a few contacts on my iPhone with various emails each one. most of which i took the time in assigning each one either work or home email type/label. but after syncing with my computer (pc / outlook 2003), most of the contacts have the email type wrong/switched.
    any ideas?
    thanks!

Something similar happened with the original iPhone launch, when I for one "assumed" that Notes and Task syncronization would be included. If a Palm could do it, why not the iPhone?
I have since learned to let other people be first adopters and read reviews and comments before buying. This time around I knew about the lack of Task synchronization, but I had not read anything about mail and contact field issues.
Oh well, next time I need to wait a little bit longer I guess. Either that or enjoy living on the bleeding edge of technology (and inter company squabbling )

  • Is it possible to sync your iphone to 2 pc's (work/home)and keep outlook calendar?

I had a iphone but returned it, but now I need confirmation that it is possible to have an iphone sync between to PCs (work / home).  I want to know if its possible to have it sync the phone with two computers.  Home has itunes for music and such, work doesn't have itunes on it - but I need to make sure that my calendar syncs between the two computers.
I am concerned that if I sync at home it will upload fine but then if I try to sync at work it will want to delete all my contact on my computer and replace with what's on the iphone?
So basically - is it possible to have your iphone sync with two seperate pc's?  I use outlook calendar and live my life with it - I must be able to use it on the iphone - can you?
Can you change the way names are stored in the contacts, I have businesses and personal contacts - I want to be able to look up a business not have to remember the name of the person who runs it?

You didn't say what contacts application you are syncing your iPhone with, but almost all give you a choice to list contacts by name or by business. That setting on the computer should transfer to the synced iPhone. Works with my Mac.

  • Iphone calendar sync to exchange is one-way, mail & contacts working

i had a problem where i was getting nothing from the exchange server ( SBS2003 ) in my calendar... but if i added something to my iphone 3g, it would show up in outlook. my iphone 2.2.1, ipod touch 2.2.1, and dev iphone using 3.0b5 all were the same.
Mail and Contacts worked fine, but not the calendars... i could create a new calendar in outlook and the phone would show that i had another calendar, but no actual items were being sync'd.
When i tried to create a new exchange account to test, I was unable to sync, and would get the error: The error is "Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [] User: [] HTTP status code: [409]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly." in the Event Log
I hate when I spend days looking online for solutions and never find out what works because people don't post their successes, so I thought I should post this, because it seemed to fix my problem.
BUT - i should say that when it came down to the registry modification, the entry was already there, and set to /exchange-oma, but i changed it to my newly created virtual directory, and poof, my problem was solved. I found what you see below here: http://sbs.seandaniel.com/2006/02/sync-errors-from-mobile-devices-in.html
...hope this helps someone... not sure what caused it other than my continually formatting and re-syncing my dev phone.
    1. Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
    2. Locate the Exchange virtual directory. The default location is the following: Web Sites\Default Web Site\Exchange
    3. Right-click the Exchange virtual directory, click All Tasks, and then click Save Configuration to a File.
    4. In the File name box, type a name. For example, type ExchangeVDir. Click OK.
    5. Right-click the root of this Web site. Typically, this is Default Web Site.
    6. Click New, and then click Virtual Directory (from file).
    7. In the Import Configuration dialog box, click Browse, locate the file that you
    8. Created in step 4, click Open, and then click Read File.
    9. Under Select a configuration to import , click Exchange, and then click OK.
    10. A dialog box will appear that states that the "virtual directory already exists."
    11. In the Alias box, type a name for the new virtual directory that you want Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access to use. For example, type ExchDAV.
[N.B. In my case I already had an ExchDAV, so I created it as ExchDAV2]
    12. Click OK.
    13. Right-click the new virtual directory. In this example, click ExchDAV. Click Properties. Click the Directory Security tab. Under Authentication and access control, click Edit. Make sure that only the following authentication methods are enabled, and then click OK:
    a. Integrated Windows authentication
    b. Basic authentication
    14. Under IP address and domain name restrictions, click Edit. Click Denied access, click Add, click Single computer, type the IP address of the server that you are configuring, and then click OK.
    15. Under Secure communications, click Edit. Make sure that Require secure channel (SSL) is not enabled, and then click OK.
    16. Click OK, and then close the IIS Manager.
    17. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    18. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MasSync\Parameters
    19. Right-click Parameters, click to New, and then click String Value.
    20. Type ExchangeVDir, and then press ENTER. Right-click ExchangeVDir, and then click Modify.
NoteExchangeVDir is case-sensitive. If you do not type ExchangeVDir exactly as it appears in this article, ActiveSync does not find the key when it locates the ExchDAV folder.
    21. In the Value data box, type the name of the new virtual directory that you created preceded by a forward slash (/). For example, type /ExchDAV.
[OR in may case, it was already set to /ExchDAV so mine needed to be renamed to /ExchDAV2]
    22. Click OK.
    23. Quit Registry Editor.
    24. Restart the IIS Admin service. To do this, follow these steps:
    a. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    b. In the list of services, right-click IIS Admin service, and then click Restart

    This isn't an issue.
If you pay attention to the former steps, you'll notice that only the virtual folder being created has SSL disabled and in the meantime, communications are allowed only from the server himself.
So the IT can be confident in following those steps.
+Unfortunately, so far, those instructions didn't help me.+
    In fact it finally worked.
I just needed to delete and recreate the relationship between the device and the Exchange server.

    Solutions?

No, I never really found an easy solution.  I believe it is an issue with some corruption in the iTunes database on the specific device.  In my case, both my iPad and iPhone now show duplicate stream songs if viewed through iTunes on my Mac, but they show different songs.  A couple years ago I had a similar issue on my iPhone, and Apple support suggested I back up the phone, completely reset it, and then restore it from the backup.  It did work, so I imagine it would probably work for my current issues with the iPhone and iPad.  But resetting and restoring an iPad or iPhone always makes me a little nervous that something will get lost.  When I did reset/restore the iPhone, I do have to say, the restore process was 100% perfect and I did not lose any data at all even though Apple support said I might.  If you try to go that route, I would suggest backing the device up both to a computer through iTunes, and to the iCloud so that you have a double backup.
None of this really resolves the issue with how the iTunes databases are becoming corrupted on the apple devices though, so it is very likely to happen again until they fix it.  I have been unable to determine if there were any specific actions or conditions which caused the corruption to happen in the first place.
Might be worth another call to Apple support, or dropping in the local Apple store if you have one near by.

  • Lost all contacts, pictures, and videos on ios 7, syncing iphone to itunes/icloud how do i restore it back, lost all contacts, pictures, and videos on ios 7, syncing iphone to itunes/icloud how do i restore it back

I updated itunes 11.1.5 and I accidently restored all my settings back to my old phone that was backed up onto my computer, I lost everything that was set up on my phone, contacts, pictures, videos, emails...etc.. how do I get my old setup back without doing a factory data reset?

Restore the device again using the most recent backup.
If there is no more recent backup and the pictures were not copied off the device prior to the original restore, they are gone.  Same goes for videos taken with the device.
Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service, simply sync them back.
Any content acquired from iTunes should be on iTunes on the computer, simply sync it back.

  • Wireless Sync of 2 Blackberry Curve to same home email

My wife and I use a common email address at home via Comcast.  We want to buy two Blackberry Curves to have this primary email and calendar while on the road.  Can we sync to the same email account via wireless so we both get the email copies (or see what is on the server) without using the desktop sync system.  My understanding is desktop sync only syncs at the PC and not wireless, which seems somewhat useless when on the road.  I may have this incorrect however.  My desire is to have all Comcast Server items be sync wirelessly.
Of course, I will have to change my Comcast settings to leave emails on the server even after we open the home Outlook application and the emails download to our PST file.  My thought is the either Blackberrys could delete (manage) the email on the Comcast Server via wireless, but a second item will be downloaded to our permanent PST...if of course this is downloaded first before the Blackberrys delete the item on the comcast server.
    is this possible?
    New Dude

this should work, however I have never tested it. However it will ONLY work for email, and of course as long as you have outlook closed or have leave a copy on the server check marked in outlook.
as for calendar, that will have to be synced through wire, however you can do a sync while you are at home, then while you are away and create a new entry, just send an invite by email to your wife so she has it too, then sync them all when you get back

  • Cannot access conflicts unable to retrieve contact information from the sync server.

ITunes error message Cannot access conflicts unable to retrieve contact information from the sync server.

I got this advice from Gator5000e on Apple Supposrt Communities:
I use Windows 7 so the path to find this file
might be different under a different OS.
Close iTunes. Search on the words "conflicts.synconflicts".
I renamed it  to conflictsold.synconflicts the .synconflicts is the extension so you can't
    rename that.
Then restarted Windows. As a test I made changes to a note in NOTES on each device. Then connected them one at a time to my computer which has iTunes 10 and Runs Windows 7, it worked !

  • Exchange Active Sync loses email address, phone when sync contacts

I have a Treo 680 running Palm OS Garnet 5.4.9 and Versamail 3.5.2  Software version TREO680-1.03-CNG.   We just implemented Exchange 2007 and the phone syncs great for the email and calendar.  But, contacts are flaky.  If I add an email address to a contact on the Exchange side, it never comes to the device.  Instead, the email gets deleted on the Exchange side.   If I add it on the Treo side, the contact updates.  It appears that the contact is a one way sync and the Palm always wins!   Email and Calendar are syncing both ways??   I am syncing the tasks via the USB and that works fine as well,  Any ideas why Contacts seems to be one sided???
Post relates to: Treo 680 (Cingular)

The Contacts should sync both ways, your case might be contact database issue.
if you decide to fix it do these steps:
    READ EVERYTHING BEFORE PROCEEDING
    1. Export your data as a .CSV fie by:
    a. click file in outlook
    b. click import and export
    c. export to a file
    d. comma separated values (windows)
    e. highlight your main contacts then hit next
    f. hit browse and locate a directory to save your file then hit next
    g. hit map custom fields, then hit default map, hit OK then, hit finish.
After exporting Delete all your contacts, If your not comfortable with that copy all your contacts to another folder. But make sure you empty out your Contacts folder.
On the Phone side you need to delete your email (EAS) account, so that it will also clean out your contacts. (double check if contacts are deleted, if not, a hardreset must be done)
Bottom Line. Both Outlook and Phone Contacts must be cleared out. before proceeding.
When contacts on the phone are gone, set up your email (EAS) again (at this point no contacts should exist on the device and outlook)
After sync and emails and calendar are transferred, try putting a dummy data both on the phone and outlook contacts, Sync twice then check if data transferred on both places.
(there is no reason for it not to)
If data in contacts are syncing Import back the contacts to outlook by:
    a. click file in outlook
    b. click import and export
    c. Import from another program or file
    d.  comma separated values (windows)
    e. Hit browse then locate where the file was exported, highlight then hit OK
    f. Leave it in "Allow Duplicates" then hit next
    g. Highlight your main contacts then hit next.
This should import back all you data, after thats done try to do another Sync..
    goodluck

  • How to move contacts (work Outlook) from iPhone to home outlook

    Hi,
I just left my company on Friday and I want to know how I can move my contacts from my iPhone to my home Outlook. Originally the contacts where on my work outlook and being pushed through Exchange. There doesn't seem a way to change this in the iTunes application. There is no options under info/Contacts. Any help would be appreciated.
    KP

You can Export your contacts from your work Outlook and save the file as a .PST file. You can then copy this file to a USB drive, and then Import the Contacts to your Outlook account at home. Then set the sync options in iTunes to sync with your local copy of Outlook contacts, which will put the Contacts back on the iPhone (you will have to delete your work's Exchange account settings on the iPhone: Settings > General > Profile > Remove)
This link: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP030737661033.aspx?pid=CH063566561033 discusses Importing and Exporting Outlook data. Hope it helps.
