Contacting the Mods.

I have been a member of this forum for a long time and have noticed that the only answer given by those with Sage or Guru tags to most problems is to contact the mods.
So if that is the only way to reach BT without the hassle and incompetence of using other methods, then I think that anyone with a problem should just save themselves some time and use the link below.
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951
And also this thread or a new one should be made sticky.
Not good for the mods, but if BT did there job correctly then visiting this forum would not be needed.

I don't agree. This forum is primarily a customer to customer affair, with the moderators on hand to keep us in check and to provide practical assistance when issues can't be resolved between us.
Sometimes it's obvious from the outset that customer discussion is unlikely to add anything and the enquirer is referred to the mods straight away. I'm not going to do a count, but if anyone wants to I'm sure they would find that this happens in a minority of cases, not with "most problems". A good number of resolutions are achieved at customer level; when that's not the case and referral to the mods is necessary, at least much of the basic groundwork will have been done to take the mods direct to the core.
The mods are a small team that does a good job with limited time and resources. Encouraging people to go straight to them without any filtering on the forum would be a great way of rendering the service unworkable. Some would contend that that would be a good thing, forcing BT to do something about the often woeful standard level of customer care; I say pigs might fly. "Not good for the mods" would ultimately translate into "not good for us".
BT and its competitors, indeed most large service companies, generally provide a decent product. But they are almost universally hopeless when things go wrong. The economics are simple - it's cheaper to lose a few disgruntled customers than to provide grand customer service for all. That's not defending the indefensible, it's facing the facts of big business. It's not something I find palatable, but I lost the political argument ages ago and we have to deal with the consequences in the best ways we can. Bumping off a good niche is not a sensible way, however principled it might be.

• Any further steps before I contact the Mods?

The usual problem has arisen of slow internet speeds.
My connection is a wired connection; usually sees around 1.8 Mbps, two computers. Nothing has changed about our house set-up, and speeds started dropping very noticeably on Sunday. We have a BT Home Hub 2. As an intuitive reading, if I can stream a YouTube video at 480p without running into buffering trouble, it's working as normal. At present, it can only stream at 144p.
So far I've:
- checked our speed with the BT Speedtester.
Exchange to Router is 1.8Mbps
Router to Device is 0.76 Mbps (not sure if this is normal or not, as I don't run speed tests when everything's fine).
- done a 17070 line test: can't hear any noise on the line.
- no unknown devices on the network
- reset the Hub today; no improvement to speeds.
- tested speed on the other computer; similar issues with streaming on that computer.
- tried removing filters and other phones.
- run a few tracerts; I'm seeing very high pings (>100, sometimes ranged up to 300 or higher) to the first hop after my router (esr11.miltonkeynes4.broadband.bt.net); see attached picture.
I live roughly 4km from our exchange, so the slightly high line attenuation in the attached ADSL details below is to be expected, and is what we normally have.
So, if anyone can spot anything I haven't or suggest I try anything else, please do comment. Otherwise, I assume my next step should be sending in a report to the mods and seeing if they can help?

you have a connection speed currently of 1.8mb but the high noise margin of 12 is not helping - normal noise margin is 6db. your connection time is only <3hrs is that because of the manual resets? manual resets actually make your conenction worse not better so a stable connection and no more resets will help
can you run btspeedtester and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results.
are you conencted to the test or master socket? do you have other sockets in other rooms?

• Phone not working. Perhaps one for the Mods)

I have tried all the usual things to no avail.
I really need the phone line to be working A.S.A.P as there is a careline fitted for emergency 24 hours a day, as my wife as well as being an amputee is prone to Epilepsy and falling and can get help at the press of a button or by the automatic fall detector.
I have completed the forms for priority repair, but this no doubt will take a little time to come in to effect.
I have reported the fault on-line and have been allocated a VOL number for the repair.
Is there any way this can be given priority under theses circumstances?
To enable the free call diversion do I just call 150 on my mobile or is there a different number?
Any help is appreciated.
Ray.

• Contacting the technical team

After having been cut off half way through a live chat with the offshore team last night and no joy in getting any help there out of hours I followed the email link to post a query. The technical guys responded extremely quickly this pm while I was at work and asked me to provide further details.... Can I just reply to their email or will that go off into some email wastebin at BT end? The reason for the q is that the email address looks generic. Or do I have to raise another query via the website to respond to their email? If the latter then since the online chat is now the preferred route (it's back in their window of open hours) the website doesn't seem to have the link to be able to raise the email query window. I know I'm being thick but there you go....!

Hi mwb3008 ,
If they have emailed you then you can email them back, but for security BT will only accept the email address in which you had raised the fault.
Please quote your fault ref number
The BT email address may look like this "BT Customer Services <[email protected]>"
Also if you need any help from the community on this forum then just let us know. Some of the basic information like adsl line statistics can tell alot about the connection, you can always post them here and we can suggest ways in which may help you get your broadband back to normal.
If you still need more help one of the "experts/sages" on this forum can provide you with a link to contact the MODS who are a British BT Specialist Team.
cheers,
James

• Saying thanks to the mods

I know many contributors to these forums say thanks to mods in each individual thread but not being a regular forum contributor I thought I would start this thread.
I have had BB speed problems for months, which affected my Vision ‘on demand’ usage (the dreaded V04 message). Contacted India, spoken to engineers, had an engineer visit. The visiting engineer changed my telephone plate to an ADSL v1.0 type (no filters needed on any extension) and disconnected the earth wire. No real success.
Raised a compliant though the BT.com pages, then contact the mods direct, since then things have improved. Took a couple of goes but I now have speeds of just below 3.0mbps and have been able to watch the on demand stuff. I have been connected now for almost five days, no restarts / resync. I trust it will now remain stable, but only time will tell.
Contacting the mods is a one to one exchange and they appear to claim ownership of your problem. At least they make the effort, so a BIG thanks, especially Stephanie.

Hi brightspark.
I am sure the mods will appreciate you making the effort to show your appreciation, cos I don't see mannnny threads saying thanks to the mods.
Hope your line stays stable

• Contacting the forum mods - method changed.

Going by this thread:
http://community.bt.com/t5/Forum-Guidance-Ideas/Thanks-Mods-Admin/td-p/138227
it seems that the forum mods have changed their preferred method of contact from:
[email protected]
to filling out a detailed contact form:
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951
Looking at the form it seems to be a better way of reporting problems that require intervention from the forum mods.
Just thought I'd bring this up and also thinking it would be a good idea for one of the forum mods to create a sticky in each section of the forums so that people can see how to get in contact with the mods.
Kind regards... Tom

• HT5030 whem installing itunes i get this message "this installation package could not be opened. Verifiy that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"

whem installing itunes on my mums new computer which is windows 7 i get this message everytime "this installation package could not be opened. Verifiy that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"

Let's check your Windows system.
1. Have you done all the important windows updates and service Packs on your system. If not do it now. START button, type in Windows Update and ENTER. Select 'CHECK FOR UPDATES'
2. Let's check your Windows system files for possible file corruption
SCAN and repair possible Windows system file corruption:
Go to command prompt (START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES right mouse click "command prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator"
type in
sfc /scannow
let Windows fix any system files that need to be repaired.
Restart the computer if it did actually repair any files.
3. Check your system for possible Malware. But you have to do it in WIndows Safe Mode.
Start your computer in "Safe mode with networking", go to this link download a free version of Malwarebyte.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
Install and perform update immediately, then do a full SCAN. Remove malware if it indeed finds any. Restart computer to regular windows to let Malwarebyte complete the removal.
To start your computer in safe mode
Press and hold the F8 key as your computer starts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the "safe mode with networking" option, and then press Enter. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your screen. To exit safe mode, restart your computer and let Windows start normally.

• Windows Server 2012 Used: Error Message from Windows 7 PC: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator.

We are using Windows Server 2012 Standard installed in VMWare / Virtual machine and to access this we use vSphere client and Remote Desktop Connection / service was already enabled and was working fine with User PCs / laptops remote desktop into the server
2012, until it gave an error message of: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator. whilst logging into the server.
We DON'T use Active Directory nor and we don't use domain and not looking to use it any-time soon.
I checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and it says the grace period has expired and the licensing mode for the remote desktop session host server is not configured. I have checked the Remote Desktop Gateway has been stopped and I tried to start it and it
resumed to stop, here I assume its where the licensing part comes in to re-enabled this.
I have been trying to follow these articles online: http://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/27/deploying-remote-desktop-gateway-rds-2012/ and http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install the overview part that I cannot get into,
because I think we have to be is AD DS for this which we don't. Is there a way around this for non domain / just standalone set-up? Is it a must / requirement we need to be in a domain in order for Remote Desktop Connection to work?
Also, we have a Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs - 10 (software and licence key), will the licence key work for the Windows 2012 Server Standard? We do not want to install the other Server mentioned which comes with CAL / licence key as its time consuming
to reinstall other programs. I have installed Server role service of Remote Desktop Licencing and automatically installed other associated services needed. in the RD Licencing Manager, the Server had a red cross and I "Activate Server"
where I followed: http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install in Install Licences section and I have used the licence key of CAL - 10 mentioned above; it stated I have successfully completed the install licences wizard and displayed:
10 Windows Server 2012 - RDS Per User CAL installed, and in the RD Licensing Manager the server turned into a green tick and added the licence.
I then tested the Remote desktop connection from my PC and the same error message was there and checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and the same error messages was there. I haven't restart the services of Remote Gateway / the server itself; do I really
need to reboot server?
Any advice / guidance would be very much appreciated and this is a urgent matter.
Thank you for your time.

• Every time I launch Firefox it pops up an error stating "Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem."

Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem.
The statement above is in the pop up error box every time, when I launch Firefox. If I click ok in the box Firefox then opens. How do I fix this initializing/launch problem?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
• Mavericks install failed on my late 2008 MBP. Says I should contact the software provider. Want to do a system restore, using Time Machine, but latest date to use is from last year - even tho did a backup before the download?

I downloaded the free Mavericks upgrade to my late 2008 MBP on Friday. I made sure to plug in my external hard drive so that Time Machine could back up beforehand. (I should say I'm not clear about the different kinds of backups that Time Machine does - I just plug it in and let it go.).
So have tried several times over the weekend to install, it takes 46 minutes each time - only to tell me it can't do it. There was an error message of needing to contact the software provider (or something similar). After searching the internet (on my husband's computer - since my MBP is rendered useless right now) I decided maybe I should wait on Mavericks and just do a system restore. However, when I plugged in the Hard Drive and proceed to System Restore, the latest date available is one from September of 2012 (14 months ago)... I've wondered if the date might be wrong? But I'm afraid to choose it because I'm not sure what I would lose. It might take me back to Snow Leopard rather than Lion... (however, the version on Restore was 10.8.1 which is Mtn Lion, right? Even tho it was last year...)
Some sources online say that I should go into applications and delete the install -- but I can't get to anything on my computer.
I tried to do a reboot in safe mode - but not sure if it worked...
I did look on the installer log error and the latest error is:
Local Host Report crash [378]
Can anyone help me? (Using simpleton, non-techie language?
Thanks

• "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" Help?

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
# Open Internet Options from control panel.
# Click the Connections tab.
# Click the LAN Settings button.
# Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
Can anyone help?

I enjoy reading (mostly fantasy novels), and I have been known to dabble in astronomy.
I must say I am bit of a geek as well when it comes to fantasy and sci-fi books and movies, and I have been known to dabble into anything ranging from studying German to playing the guitar (so far quite badly, but I’m getting there!), though at the moment my main personal interest is astronomy. I am originally from Italy so at least I have the Italian language covered pretty well!
Working in BT:
I have been with BT since the 25/09/06 (I still remember the date!) and I initially worked taking billing calls. Since then, I have gained experience in pretty much every other aspect of customer service working via all sorts of mediums (calls, emails, Live Chat, blogs, Twitter, and – obviously – forums). I have been a moderator on this forum since its Beta inception and I now work with SeanD as Community Manager. My time in BT has been challenging at times but I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience and wouldn't change it!

Working in BT:
I have been with BT since 2006 and thoroughly enjoy my time here. I started out in broadband sales, helping customers place orders when they were unable to do so online. I have also worked on the old BT Shop Sales, Customer Services, doing orders and billing and BT Business live chat. I started working on BT’s Social Media programme in 2008 and have been a moderator since the old Beta forum. I am now one of the community managers and absolutely love my work.

The truth is ALL stores should receive inventory and that list is no longer needed nor do I have enough time to support it. Also, we will never release counts.
Give your store time to receive any additional shipments and check with them this evening.
