Contacts and Calendar Server, Pointless?

Hello!
MLS N00B here, not really much experience with ML Server. Only had it a few weeks, and the new Profile Managaer instead of WGM thing really messed me around, seems unstable and a little too new.
Anyway. Todays discussion comes in the shape of Contacts and Calendar server. What are they actually for?
Profile Manager pushed a payload to all users (by default) so they know where the calendar and contacts server is. This seems to be a side effect of activating the services in the Server app. However, the client computers don't actually seem to use them in any way.
No contacts, not even the Directory contacts (searching via directory is enabled) are visible in the Contacts app. Nothing 'network' based in calendars either.
Group calendars are also a mystery to me.
My question is. Where would you create a 'Group' based contact list, or a 'Group' specific calendar? and make them available automagically (using PM) to all users within that group?
I've tried creating Wiki specific calendars and assigning the correct groups and permissions, but I can't see how I'd get them in to iCal. I've even tried adding extra iCal payloads to the groups in PM and using the URL field - still nothing.
Any help is welcome, thanks guys

The 'server' Contacts and Calendars services in OS X server don't work the way you would expect — like the functionality you would see on a server app like Microsoft Exchange. That is that various users can have shared resources and/or you have server owned resources that you then make available to users/groups with individual, fine-grained permissions.
You can have 'shared' server Contacts & Calendars in OS X Server but what you have to do is setup a (dedicated) user account on which you then create various calendars and address book(s). Then in the Calendar & Contacts apps on OS X and iOS you make accounts on the clients and use that pseudo account on the server as the account — not each individual users' account on the server. So each (real) user 'shares' the pseudo user's account with, obviously, full read-write access.
It ain't beautiful... but it works.

  • I have updated to lion. Set up an iCloud so contacts and calendar are shared between iMac iPhone 4s and iPad 1. But iTunes is telling me to update the software on the iPad and iPhone, but it just gets stuck contacting the software server. What should I do

I have updated my iMac to lion so I can use iCloud to share contacts and calendar between iPhone 4s and iPads 1.  Somehow it seems to have worked although still not sure how to move stuff in and out of iCloud.  iTunes is telling me to update the software on the phone and iPad. When I try to do this it just gets stuck with a box saying connecting to software update server. This has never happened before.  I cannot update or restore either the phone or the iPad in iTunes although I have synced the info.  What should I do?

Something went wrong with the update, this can and does happen with every version of iOS.
There is nothing wrong with the update.
Simply restore the device via iTunes on the computer.
If iTunes is stating it will take hours to update, that indicates an extremely slow Internet connection and is likely the reason the OTA update failed.

  • Contacts and calendar items disappear when exchange server is off

    Hi All
I've been having this problem for a few weeks now and it's most frustrating. My iphone is setup to sync over the air to our corporate exchange server. It seems that when the server is down for repair/patching ALL my contacts and calendar items disappear from my iphone. This doesn't seem to happen if the phone is out of signal?
I know that I can sync directly with Outlook, however this would then mean that the phone is only updated when synced with my laptop at work. If I sync both over the air AND with Outlook, I get duplicates of everything in my calendar.
I'm not restoring my iphone to factory defaults to get rid of the duplicates and go back to over the air sync only.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get calendar and contacts to work "offline" when the exchange server is down?
Main PC is running Windows 7 and exchange is 2007. This problem is only recent, I think in the last month of two. Nothing has changed other than the last few firmware updates from Apple.

hi, cheers for the info. That would make sense, however how come when I'm out of signal and not connected to wifi, the data doesn't also disappear as that too would render the server "unavailable".
Is there a way to make the iphone keep a copy of the data much the same as "offline mode" in Outlook where you can still browse your email, calendar and contacts when the server is offline, and it picks up where it left off when the server is available again?
I appreciate this may not be a "problem" as such, but is frustrating as all my contacts and calendar live in Outlook and I can't function without them

  • How I migrated my caldav data (Contacts and Calendars) to Mavericks + Server

    Hello,
I write this post to share with you the steps I had to take for correctly migrating my caldav database (containing data for Addressbook and Calendar Server) from a Lion Server to Mavericks with Server version 3.
The problem occured like this : after downloading and installing mavericks (from the Apple Store), and downloading/installing the Server Utility (version 3), everything migrated just fine, except I had an error message during the first launch of the Server utility, but since it eventually launched, and the services were running, I didn't notice anything at first.
But I rapidly saw a big problem : my caldav data was missing. If a client connected to their calendar application, they would get (after syncing with the server) a new empty calendar named "calendar" (this is typical of a fresh empty caldav database). Same for addressbook clients (empty contacts).
So I searched and read several post that helped me greatly :
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3890595
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23581552
BUT, what is different in mavericks, is this :
The postgres cluster that hosts the caldav data seems to have move (again!), and this is by exploring several config files that I figured which was the right socket to use to connect to the good postgres cluster.
The clues were in the file : /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/private/etc/caldavd/caldavd-apple.p list
Where I found the precious parameter (under the Postgres section) :
    <key>SocketDirectory</key>
           <string>/var/run/caldavd/PostgresSocket</string>
What I also figured is that the user account to use for connecting to this postgres cluster is caldav, and not _postgres.
So here are basically the steps I had to take  to reinstall my old database.
    Step #0 :
First, you need to locate the dump of the old postgres database, I found that the migration process seemed to make a dump inside :
This method ONLY WORKS if you have the following file :
    /Library/Server/Migrated/Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Backup/dumpall.psql.gz
If you have that file, you can extract it with the command :
      gunzip /Library/Server/Migrated/Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Backup/dumpall.psql.gz
For the rest of the steps I assume this file is named  /path/to/your/dump.psql
I think (but I'm not sure of it) that THIS precise dump is different than what you would get inside a manual dump, meaning that in this dump you have all the  databases of the cluster. Again I'm not sure, but that's what I think since there are CREATE DATABASE instructions inside it).
If you don't have that file, perhaps you made a dump by hand.
If that's the case, I think that before Step #3 you will have to create an empty caldav database, BUT, I'm not sure the command "calendarserver_bootstrap_database -v" mentionned here will create the caldav in the right cluster (read above). Perhaps we could figured out together if that's your case.
Step #1 : stop the services
    sudo serveradmin stop addressbook
    sudo serveradmin stop calendar
Step #2 : drop the caldav database
    sudo dropdb -h /var/run/caldavd/PostgresSocket -U caldav caldav
If you get this error message :
dropdb: database removal failed: ERROR:  database "caldav" is being accessed by other users
DETAIL:  There is 1 other session using the database.
then go to Step #2a, otherwise, go straight to Step #3
Step #2a : only if Step 2 didn't work, see above ! (taken from here)
    # Connect to the postgres database
    psql -h /var/run/caldavd/PostgresSocket -U caldav
    # Terminate the current sessions
    postgres=> select pg_terminate_backend(procpid) from pg_stat_activity where datname='caldav';
    # Exit postgres
                   postgres=> \q
Step #3 : if your database dump is not from /Library/Server/Migrated/Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Backup/dumpall.psql.gz, then PERHAPS you will have to create manually an empty caldav database (see Step #0)
Step #4 : create the new database from the dump
    sudo psql -h /var/run/caldavd/PostgresSocket -U caldav -f </path/to/your/dump.psql> caldav
A lot of things should be displayed, and I eventually got an error at the end :
psql:DataDump.sql:49844: \connect: FATAL:  database "collab" does not exist
But in my case that didn't affect my migration.
    Step #5 : restart services
    sudo serveradmin start calendar
    sudo serveradmin start addressbook
    I hope that helps you.
    Cheers

iCloud adds a new (additional) Address book to Outlook, it contains the iCloud contacts, if the iCloud contacts and the Outlook contacts are the same there will be duplicates:
Look in one Contact Folder only
Delete the Outlook Contacts (you can't delete the whole folder, only the contents
    These are your choices.

You'd have to think through this, but it seems like if you are using Outlook, and the items vanished from the Outlook client as well as the server, that you could re-populate Outlook using iTunes.

  • Contacts and Calendars on OS X Server

I updated OS X Server  and found today that I had lost all of my Contacts and Calendar information.  As the Server was used to sync this data between my desktop, iPad and iPhone I was somewhat shocked.  Thankfully I managed to manually restore my Contact information but not the Calendar information for the past year.  Does anyone know where this information is stored and how to restore it from a TimeMachine backup?
Since starting this I also note that all of my reminder information has disappeared.  I'm hoping that this could be recovered to save me a lot of time and effort manually rebuilding it all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The OS X Server is on a Mid 2010 Mac Mini Server which has been updated to OS X Yosemite.  It had been running well until the update to version 4.0.3.

    hi.
    Make sure the Calendar app is closed;
    first unhide user library:
From the OS X Finder, open a new window and go to the users Home folder (hit Command+Shift+H to jump to Home instantly)
Pull down the “View” menu and select “Show View Options” (or hit Command+J if you like keyboard shortcuts)
Check the box for “Show Library Folder” then close the View Options panel
go in this folder: users --> <yourusername> --> Library.
    Delete the calendar folder
    enter time machine.
recover the Calendar folder from before you updated OS X Server.
(optional) hide user library. (same steps)

  • Contacts and calendar events disappearing and reappearing

I have three issues, two of which I think are related.
    1.
My contacts disappear on my iPhone 3G. I am set up with MobileMe to auto sync and I don't know if that is getting screwed up somehow? The contact are on my Mac lap top when I go look (thank goodness), and I force a sync and they transfer to my phone fine. This has happened twice now. I have copied my contacts as vCards and saved that file in the downloads folder just in case they get lost on both my laptop and my iPhone - I also do a regular full laptop backup to my Time Machine - is there anything else I should be doing to back up my contact and calendar data?
    2. (possibly related to 1.)
When I am looking at my iCal in the weekly view on my laptop, sometimes several of my appointments are not visible. It is only when I try to put an appointment in that is at the same time as the invisible ones that they suddenly reappear.
    3. One of my contacts will not sync from my iPhone to my lap top? It used to be in both places but for some reason it is now only on my iPhone and even when I sync, it doesn't come into my laptop Address Book.
    Help please!!!

i am having what i think is a very similar problem in that my Exchange (you seem to use only mobileme) contacts partially disappear. i discover this when i check my sms message list and find that many messages show only the phone number when earlier the name was there. a check of the contacts list shows that some have disappeared.
i restarted the phone and checked immediately but it was still gone but after a few minutes they came back.
my theory is that something is going on with messy exchange server syncs with my iphone that could be causing the process to break midway but after a while the phone automatically syncs again.
this issue appears quite rarely for me but enough to be noticed and to be annoying.

  • Any ideas for how to sync to Exchange 2003 - contacts and calendar

    Hi
I am still searching for a mechanism to give me the sync solution I want, which is as follows:
At work I have a PC running Outlook 2003 via an Exchange Server 2003 setup.
At home I have an iMac running Snow Leopard
In the middle I have an iPhone 3G
I want to sync Calendar and Contacts across all three machines.
I want to sync work email between the Exchange server and the iphone, but do NOT need this to sync on my iMac at home
    That's it.
At the moment I can sync email, calendars and contacts successfully between the Exchange server and iPhone, using the over-the-air Exchange Sync on the iPhone. But sadly my iMac will not sync contacts and calendars to the exchange server 2003 as Snow Leopard only supports exchange 2007.
Ironically (because I don't need this bit to work) I have managed to get my iMac to sync with my Exchange server EMAIL, by selecting the Exchange IMAP option when setting up the mail account on my iMac (as opposed to the Exchange 2007 option). However, I cannot get iCal or Address book to sync with Exchange 2003, regardless of the options I select when setting up the new accounts in Address book or iCal. I guess these just do not work with Exchange 2003
I know that I cannot use mobileme as a solution, as you cannot have two over-the-air syncs going on, and I need to maintain my iphone link to the exchange server via activesync
I also know that using itunes to sync via the cable will not work, as this creates separate contacts and calendar files on the iphone and so does not provide the syncing solution I seek.
I have tried using google to act as the middle man between my iMac and Exchange server data - getting the iMac to sync to Google Calandar and Google Address Book, and then using a third party piece of software called gsyncit to sync from google to the .ost outlook file on my PC workstation. This works some of the time, but keeps crashing and leaving me with multiple duplicates to have to sort out - much too much hard work on a regular basis.
So I still do not have a solution. Unfortunately upgrading to Exchange server 2007 is not a solution.....
    Any new ideas out there
    Thanks

I don't think there will be a solution to this. Exchange 2003 just isn't supported.

  • How do I use Active Sync to view SharePoint Lists (Contacts and Calendars) on a Mobile Phone?

We are attempting to use SharePoint 2010 in combination with Exchange 2010 to implement shared calendars and contact lists throughout our organization.  We are able to connect the lists to Outlook 2010, but have been unsuccessful in viewing
the calendars and contact lists from our mobile phones.  How do we use Active Sync to view SharePoint Lists (Contacts and Calendars) on a Mobile Phone?
In trying to answer this question, we have come across a few different possibilities, all of them falling just short of a long term solution for us.  After doing research, we found that Active Sync will only show the default folders of the account.  To
solve this, we downloaded an Add-In for Outlook (CodeTwo FolderSync) to synchronize folders and synchronized our SharePoint list with a new Contact list in the default folder.  The issue we came across with this method is that the Add-In we are using
is not capable of automatic synchronization.  There is a button and it must be clicked after every update is made, which is not ideal for our solution.  We then went to the company (CodeTwo) and found server side software (Exchange Sync) that they
offer which will automatically synchronize the folders.  After installing that on the Exchange Server, we now are running into the issue of not being able to locate the SharePoint lists on the Exchange Server.
Does anyone happen to know how we can get to the SharePoint lists from the Exchange Server?  Has anyone else been able to use shared contacts lists and calendars from SharePoint on their mobile phones using Active Sync?  If so, are we in the right
direction with what we have found so far?
    Thanks,
    Brad

You cannot use ActiveSync for that, but there are SharePoint clients for the iPhone. Windows Mobile 7 natively supports SharePoint with SharePoint Workspace Mobile, part of Microsoft Office Mobile. Android and BlackBerry might also have some apps.

  • HT1692 Have recently installed itunes and outlook on a new computer.  Have multiple email accounts set up in Outlook tho only use contacts and calendar in relation to one of these. Cannot sync itunes with the correct contacts and calendars, Help!

My new computer is 64-bit running Windows 7 pro, SP1 and Microsoft Office 2010 Pro Plus 32-bit
My phone is a 4S runing iOS 6.1.3
Very frustrated now that I have recently installed itunes and outlook on this new computer.  Everything worked perfectly ok on my laptop which was also 64-bit Windows 7 and running 32-bit Microsoft Office 2010 Pro.  I have multiple email accounts set up in Outlook tho only use contacts and calendar in relation to one of these. Cannot sync itunes with the correct contacts and calendars, when I sync the calendar and contacts are empty.  Not sure if there is any way to point itunes to particular address books and calendars.
I have installed and uninstalled itunes 3 times and thank goodness have a backup
    Can anyone help please?
    thanks in anticipation

I had my home computer set up to sync to work's Exchange server. It worked well, but I didn't like seeing work email messages and other programs trying to sync with my default Outlook folder, which was then the Exchange (& work related) .ost file. I know there are various ways to manage those problems using filters, view, subfolders, etc., but it was a hassle for me. I think it could work well for many other folks.
For now, I have published my work calendar and subscribed to that calendar on my home computer. So I have view only access to my calendar on my home computer (and I can add/edit calendar items on my iPad (or Outlook Web Access) when away from work). This is not quite what I wanted, but it may work.
It almost makes me long for the days when I used my Windows Mobile Treo to sync back and forth between exchange at work and outlook at home (but had many sync conflicts as a result).

  • Google contacts and calendar events entered on my iPhone 5s are not syncing with my google account.

Newly entered contacts and calendar events entered on my IPhone 5s are not syncing to google.
    Facts that may be pertinent:
    - I switched from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5s and did the easy option of having it automatically set up like my previous phone, so I did not change any part of the setup. It is possible that it stopped syncing at that time, based on which contacts have synced and which haven't.
    - My gmail account is set up as Exchange, with Mail, Contacts, and Calendars set to sync.
    - Server: m.google.com, Use SSl is on, S/MIME is off (I don't actually know what these are, but maybe they matter?)
    - Fetch New Data / Gmail account is set to Push
    - Contacts and Calendar Default Account is Gmail
    - In the Contacts app under Groups I have only GMAIL checked.
I've read that Google recommends CardDAV, which I gather is not the same as Exchange?
I'm afraid to delete anything and start over, for fear of losing my contacts.
Is there a difference between the gmail account I set up and what the Contacts app calls GMAIL?
If there is anything I should communicate about how things are set up on the Google end, let me know.
    Thanks in advance for help!

    Hello Marsden,
    Try this...
Go to the isync program on your Mac.
Go to Preferences in the main menu
    Hit Reset Sync History
I'm pretty sure this is how I fixed it... so far so good.
Let me know if that works for you!

  • Contacts and Calendar not synching. (Centro, Windows XP, Palm Desktop 6.2.2) Please help!

I originally posted on the Hotsync forum, and it was suggested that I post my question here.  Important information:  My office uses Microsoft Outlook Exchange, and I have my Centro set up to get my emails.  It also wants to sync my contacts and calendar; however, that is completely unneeded for my purposes.  I need to synch my Contacts and Calendar with my Palm Desktop.  If there is something I have to check or uncheck to do so, please tell me how.
    This is my original post:
"When I hotsynch, my memopad, my documents to go, everything seems to synch except my contacts and calendar.
After a few hours on the phone with tech support at sprint, we went for the nuclear option, hard reset, and the temporarily solved the problem, but now it has returned.
    Information that might be important:
I'm getting a failed to backup 1 file error>PmTraceDatabase>Protocol Error: Handheld file could not be opened (4004)>SYNCERR_FILE_NOT_OPEN.  This may or may not be relevent.
Anyway, I appreciate any help with this.  I depend on this PDA phone to keep me organized and there's a slight and embarrasing touch of panic to how I feel now that it is not working correctly."
    Post relates to: VisorPhone

Okay, I'm continuing to do research on this, and here's my suspicion, maybe true or maybe false.  When I set up versamail to get mail from my office's exchange server, it also configured my contact list and calendar to sync as well, and synching with the the exchange server and synching with my desktop software are mutually exclusive.
If this IS true, then hopefully there is a way to set it up so I synch my email only with the exchange server, and leave my contact list and calendar configured to synch with my desktop software.
Any feedback or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Contacts and Calendar Services Broken

I have a new build of Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2 and am having problems with the Contacts and Calendar services.
The server is an Open Directory Master.
I did this build by installing Mountain Lion 10.8 on a new hard drive. I had no interest in migrating any data except for the Open Directory, so I created an Open Directory archive to restore from with the new build. I then removed the old Lion Server boot drive and installed the Mountain Lion Server drive, then installed Server app. I moved the data stores to the RAID before starting any services.
DNS, DHCP, File Sharing, FTP, Mail, Messages, NetInstall, Profile Manager, Software Update, Time Machine, VPN, Websites and Wiki all work normally. I also use Portable Home Directories. I've only dabbled a bit with Mail, Profile Manager and Wiki, but I have not encountered any problems with them. I use the other services rather heavily. Everything is working great except Contacts and Calendar.
    sudo changeip -checkhostname returns:
    Primary address     = 10.0.0.2
    Current HostName    = myserver.mydomain.private
    DNS HostName        = myserver.mydomain.private
The names match. There is nothing to change.
    dirserv:success = "success"
In the Server app both Contacs and Calendars turn on and appear to be working. I have the self-signed certificate created by the sever app assigned to the services. I am unable to log in clients to either Contacts or Calendar service via browser or through iCal or Contacs apps. The apps first notify that a secure connection is not possible. Then when I proceed I get authentication failures, even though the credentials are correct. Removing the certificate from the services has no improvement.
When I run "sudo serveradmin fullstatus calendar" I get the following output:
    calendar:setStateVersion = 1
    calendar:logPaths:LogFile = "/var/log/caldavd/access.log"
    calendar:logPaths:ErrorLog = "/var/log/caldavd/error.log"
    calendar:state = "RUNNING"
    calendar:servicePortsAreRestricted = "NO"
    calendar:servicePortsRestrictionInfo = _empty_array
    calendar:readWriteSettingsVersion = 1
Examining /var/log/caldavd/error.log I find this interesting message:

It seems as though upon setting the data store to the RAID that not all the necessary directories and files were created for the Contacts and Calendar services. Is there a way to create them new? Remember, there is no Contact or Calendar data to save. I am starting with a clean slate.
Assuming the problem lies with the missing directories in my data store location, is there a way to either create the missing directories & files, or just rebuild the two servieces from scratch?

    Back up all files.
Quit the Server application and drag it to the Trash, but don't empty. You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to stop all services. You won't lose any server data.
Put the app back where it was and launch it. Test.

Someone may help me?. Do you need more logs?

    Back up all files.
Quit the Server application and drag it to the Trash, but don't empty. You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to stop all services. You won't lose any server data.
Put the app back where it was and launch it. Test.
