Contacts appearing just as numbers

I updated my operational system about two days ago. Today 80% of my contacts are reduced to just numbers. I don't use Icloud and I just back-up locally.
Any ideas?

Found solution, using GMAIL.
Copied all contacts saved in vcf file to my gmail account. Over there Gmail will ask merge similar contacts , which is great to avoid duplication.
Turned off icloud contacts on my iphone.
Setup my iphone to sync my gmail contacts. in settings/ account / turned on Contacts
Refresh my email icon to sync with google on iphone
Voila ! It starts to update my contact list.
Go back to icloud if you want sync with icloud, turned on the contacts. It will ask if you want to merge, yes.
Then backup your iphone with icloud again.
Problem disappear and you get back all contacts info saved in the vcf file.

After iOS8 update, my iPhone 5's Favorites show only numbers, not names. They also do not appear in my Contacts list. All other Contacts appear as they should. I am able to call and message all my Contacts.

your post got me to thinkin - in fact I do have memory of having rxd some texts from ATT - these were inititated by them - and have even rxd spam texts from unknown sources- which ended up in the list as "numerical contacts"
I deleted those.....
Now as far as narrowing down - seems like there must be some link from the senders end between their "text name" and their associated number... which makes me wonder - what if they send u a text but don't bother to setup the "text name" stuff ? if they were a stranger on my radar I wouldn't have their contact info...
So perhaps it gets down to whether or not I initiated the conv
if I didn't - yet still put them into my Macbook Pro's Address Book
one might presume the iPhone's text app is smart enough to link that strange phone number to a contact
Perhaps an oversite on the programmers part ?

Does Outlook also backup all contacts with just phone numbers?

Obviously not every contact is going to have an email, but for some reason in outlook I can only pull up the ones with emails.

What is available with your Outlook address book? Does your Outlook address book have a group that includes email addresses only for the contacts you've placed in the group?

There is no setting that provides for this - not on the iPhone, and not under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
But how can I backup/sync ALL contacts from my iphone to outlook or something else?
Contacts on your iPhone are included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the sync process. There is no other backup function available for iPhone contacts.
Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. With Windoze, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007 along with syncing calendar events, or with Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only.

Contacts appearing as phone numbers instead of names...how do i fix this?

I just updated my 4s software today...as soon as it updated, my previous phone calls and messages are now listed by the person's phone number instead of their name...because I do not know everyone's phone number off the top of my head, this makes messaging and receiving calls difficult. How do I fix this?!

How to Fix
1- Dail *228 on your iPhone 4S which is basically recognized as Verizon programmingnumber.
2-   Press “1” to “Program or Activate” your iPhone 4S.
3-   After some time your call will be disconnected and a message will appear saying “Settings updated”.
4-   Open task manager by double clicking on your iPhone 4S Home Button.
5-   Close your Phone, Message and Contacts Apps.
6-   Wait 4-5 minutes and then open your iPhone 4S Message App to verify fix

HT204150 Contacts only show phone numbers, no names?!

My wife's iPhone 4S has suddenly lost its info. All contacts are just phone numbers, no photo stream etc., as if it's lost icloud back up , even it's never been backed up. I've rebooted it (off/on) and no difference.
I've had this happened to my iPhone 5 last year, but not sure what I did and I back mine up every night over wifi.

I have noticed that if you go to the edit button, and if you haven't deleted any of the texts from that number.>tick Edit> tick on one of the texts circles> Delete it> Scroll up to top of all texts, and a Add Contact will appear//Create New or Add to Existing.

I just got back from the Verizon store and the guy went to my settings and under each email, unsynced my contacts. I lost all my contacts, and it's a good thing I had a typed up a back up file on my computer before going but to my joy- IT WORKED! It's been a week and all my contacts haven't moved and have stayed. It's like a regular phone (contact wise).

Contact issue w/ phone numbers

I have a user that is syncing her iPhone with her Enterprise Exchange account (Exchange Server 2010). For some reason some of her contacts are missing phone numbers. They show up in her Outlook 2010 just fine but not on her phone. She can manually input the numbers on the phone but this becomes a pain when she sync's several thousand contacts.
Any ideas/help as to why this is happening would be great. Thanks.

yes, I have a contact with several phone numbers (home, office, mobile...) .
When I want to call him,
I select the entry from the contacts list and
press e.g. the green dialing button.
Now I would expect that the 3 numbers of the contact will be displayed and I have to select one of them.
But the phone starts dialing with the first number from the contact.
I found a way to select the right number:
Select the entry
press "options"
press "show details"
select the right number
press the green button
But if this is the way to handle it, it is not very user friendly.

I did that but nothing has changed. I only have a few contacts. Messages just showing numbers. If I start a message with a name it pulls it from somewhere but then changes to the their number

as it says, I just went to send a text message and noticed all my contacts are just numbers, went into my contacts and there are no contacts there at all, I have not used iCloud nor have I synced my phone with itunes previously, so do this mean they have all just gone! I hope note as I rely on it for my business contacts, I couldn't sync with iCloud because my MacBook Pro is 10.6 so I can't get the app, don't understand whats going on and panicking! They were there this morning and since then I haven't updated my phone or done anything out of the norm. Any help please!

Click on the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the desktop. Select "About this Mac" and it will tell you which operating system you are using. It is a moot point now since it would seem you are not using Time Machine. If you are on Leopard (10.5.x) as your signature indicates then I highly recommend you get Time Machine up and running so that you can recover from such emergencies that you are now faced with. If you are still on Tiger (10.4.x) then upgrade to Leopard and get Time Machine working for you. It has saved me several times already and is worth the price of the upgrade by itself.

Lync 2013 & Windows 8.1: All contacts appearing as "Presence Unknown"

Having an intermittent problem with Lync 2013 running in Windows 8.1. When I first sign-in to Lync (I'm working on an laptop that is part of my organizations domain and I'm logged in before I start Lync) all my contacts show up and for about
1 second or less, I can see that their presence is displayed correctly (Available, Busy, Away, In a meeting, On a call, etc.). Then all of the sudden all contacts switch to "Presence Unknown". My own presence is showing as "Available".
If I try to message a contact, it just shows the spinning dots and then eventually fails. One time the message went through, the recipient said they got the message twice, and for a brief moment - maybe bout a minute - the presence status
for all the contacts was once again available and showing. But then once again changed back to "Presence Unknown". Most of the time if it shows "Presence Unknown" I'm unable to IM the contact.
Sometimes - if I wait long enough - the presence status eventually appears and I'm able to communicate with contacts. But that can take up to an hour or more.
Sometimes after waiting for a bit, I get signed-off automatically. This morning that happened and I got a pop-up message "Server unreachable." If I click on sign-in again, it was able to sign-in and my status was once again
"Available" but all contacts were showing as "Presence Unknown"
Sometimes if I sign-out/in, that fixes things but that works less frequently. Usually the same situation just repeats where initially everything looks correct - everyone's presence is accurate - then immediately changes to "Presence Unknown"
and nobody is reachable.
Rebooting doesn't seem to work all the time but sometimes.
If I connect with Lync2010, none of these issues happen.
Is this a problem with Lync2013? A problem with Windows 8.1? A system setup issue within my organization?

Did the issue happen only for you or for multiple users?
If the issue happen only for you, please try to login to another Windows 8.1 computer and login Lync 2013 with your account to test if the issue cause by your computer. You can also login with other well-worked Lync 2013 client on your computer
to test the issue again.
On your computer, please delete user profile with the following path and then test the issue again:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync

Anytime you have photos in the Camera Roll album on your iPad your computing assumes you will want to copy them. If you don't want to copy those photos then just quit Image Capture or whatever other program starts when you connect. Then start iTunes and go from there.

Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

TS1702 I just updated numbers to newest version and found that numbers quits to home screen when I tap the information icon on "function help", it starts to load the "help" then quits this happens on both my ipad3 & iphone5

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
