Contacts are gone...except when composing a message?

Backstory:
I originally got my iPhone 4S in June of last year. Before moving to iOS, I used Android. To get my contacts to show up on my 4S I added a "CardDAV" account to sync my contacts from my google account to my iPhone. In October of last year, the account password was reset and I lost access to the account. Every time I entered the contacts app, the phone would prompt me to enter the password for my CardDAV account. This persisted for about two months, and then the phone finally just stopped asking me for the account password.
A couple weeks ago, I went to my iCloud settings and flipped the "Contacts" sync to on.. because I planned on upgrading my phone soon. Fast forward to yesterday, I delete the CardDAV account from my settings because it hasn't synced my contacts with Google for over a year. As soon as I delete the CardDAV account, all of my contacts disappear. My contacts app says I have no contacts. I went to iCloud to see if my contacts were backed up like I told it to, and there is only one entry in my contacts, which is myself. Since iCloud didn't save my contacts like I thought it was doing, I finally guessed my password and was able to login to my Google account. After looking, the last time it synced my contacts was October of last year.
If neither iCloud or Google was saving my contacts... where did they go, and how do I get them back?
Thank you for your help!

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to add what I mentioned in the title. While trying to move around my phone to try and find out where my contacts may be, I found that if I go to the messaging app and compose a message, I can type a contacts name in and send them a message as long as I have a thread in the app with them. In the app itself, all of my message threads still show up as phone numbers.

    Hello Brian Delaney,
It sounds like you are trying to send emails but for some reason, thousands show activity. I would start by re indexing the mailbox to help troubleshoot the issue:
    1.Quit Mail if it’s open.
2.In ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData, delete any file that begins with “Envelope Index,” such as Envelope Index or Envelope Index-shm.To show your home Library folder, hold down the Option key, then in the Finder choose Go > Library.
3.Open Mail.Mail creates new Envelope Index files. This process may take a few minutes, depending on how many messages Mail is reindexing.
    Mail (Mavericks): Reindex messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14876
If the issue persists, I would next remove the account, restart the computer, and re add the account:
1.Choose Mail > Preferences, then click Accounts.
2.Select an account, then click Remove.
    Mail (Mavericks): Remove mail accounts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14944
Removing an Exchange or IMAP account doesn’t permanently delete the account’s mailboxes and messages because they’re stored on the mail server. To retrieve the account’s mailboxes and messages from the server, add the account again in Mail.
To add the account again, click the  rather than the  as described above and retest the issue.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

I have this identical problem.  For a while my group texts didnt show up on my ipad.  Then one day they did, maybe everyone in the group started using the same os version or something.  Ever since my first reply to the group there have been complaints of multiple threads.  I can not find a pattern for when my group text's decide they want to create a new thread. (it doesnt happen every time)  Everyone in the group has deleted the thread, we've all toggled imessage on/off etc.  There still hasn't been a solution.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    Thanks,
I'll give those drivers a try the next time I install Windows 8. However I still don't understand how they would be any different to what is included in Boot Camp Assistant that came with Mountain Lion. Can you or anyone else confirm that they are different?
Can you also confirm that you have the Bluetooth radios in Device Manager and that you can discover Bluetooth devices under Windows.
Last question - do you run more than 1 partition in Windows?

  • Upgrade iPhone to the new OS4 and now all my contacts are gone

I took the new OS4 update and now all my contacts are gone! I tried restoring from a previous backup and they're still not there!
    This is very disturbing.
What can one do to restore their contacts (that should have never been deleted in the first place)?

I’ve contacted a friend that works for Mac; He is a bit of a genius. Apparently when you reboot there will be a copy of your backed up phones details from before you installed the new software. I'm currently trying this and just pressing ok to all of the error messages. Looking at the screen on itunes that displays the usage, over time it’s filling up more and more. Maybe also give it a go and see if second time lucky things come back, especially all those contacts. Ill let you know how I go.... I’m definitely considering blackberry after this and I have been an iPhone devotee from the start!! NOT HAPPY JAN

  • All messages are gone after deleting some text messages iOS8

    Hi guys!
I've got a quiet annoying issue. Don't know if that is the hardware or software problem. I've replaced my 6 plus because of camera problems, and after that each time I try to delete ANY message from message app, app just crushed, and each time you're opening it it shows you empty inbox plus "new iMessage" window. That's not the end. Closing the app doesn't solve the problem. All of contact are gone in the same time so iMessage, phone call stop working. The only solution is restart the phone. Open the message app, close it again and open. But all of deleted messages are restored...
Any ideas how to solve the problem?
Erase content and restore from backup doesn't work, plus new update has been released today - still the same problem.
    Thanks for the answers!
    Adam.

    Hello Adam,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Given your previous troubleshooting, the next step for this issue is to reinstall iOS.  If that doesn't work, then the next step is to restore to factory settings.  To reinstall please follow the directions outlined below.
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
    Have a good one,
    Alex H.

I just downloaded the latest update for iphone 4S and connected to icloud for the first time.  I now do not have any contacts on my phone... How do I get my contacts back??

I have had a similar problem, except all of my text messages are gone too! My contacts have slowly started to come back, but it appears that my most recently added contacts are gone, and my messages are also gone still.

  • While synching iPhone, box popped up and said changes will be made to my contacts. If I didnt allow change, it wasnt going to continue to sync. Now half of my contacts are gone and I have all of my wifes contacts. Any way I can get mine back?

While synching my iPhone, a box popped up and said that so many of my contacts are going to change.  That happened before and my contacts and my wifes contacts ended up in each others phones. So we just had to go through and delete the ones we didnt want.  When I did it this time, half of my contacts are gone and I have all of my wifes.  Any way I can get my contacts back?

You should have been sycning them with your computer all along.  Sync them from your computer back to the iphone.

    Hi stanlaw,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The information below should help you with this.
Associating and verifying email addresses with your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE68
How to verify the primary email address for your Apple ID
When you first create an Apple ID (using your email address) a verification email will be sent to that address. If you sign in to your Apple ID from the link in that email, the email address will be verified as the primary email address for your Apple ID. You can also resend the email verification if the email address is not verified:
    1. Sign in to My Apple ID to manage your account information.
    2. Click Resend under Primary Email Address.
    3. Verify your changes by following the link in the email you will receive from Apple and signing back in to your account.
I hope this information helps ....
    Happy Holidays!

  • Synced phone for the first time, and all my contacts are gone. Please help

I had to upgrade the iOS to 5. And all of the contacts are gone. Is there a way to recover them?

How did you get the contacts loaded onto the iPhone in the first place?
If you used iTunes that would imply the "source" of contacts was either on your computer (e.g. Outlook) or perhaps through a one-time upload from an e-mail service like GMail.  In either case, your contacts should (might) still be where they were when you originally put them onto your iPhone.
If all your contacts were manually entered into the iPhone, then you're out of luck since they are not backed up, unless you set iCloud up to sync your contacts (in which case they'd still be in iCloud).

  • My Contacts are gone since I deleted and reentered email accounts

Our email accounts were having issues sending messages so I deleted both accounts then added them again. Now our Contacts are missing, however, when we enter an email address it is still somewhere but when we tap on the Contacts icon there is nothing there.

Did you have a backup of them in Time Machine or iTunes?  If so, restore them.  That's why they very clearly ask you to back up your information before setting up iCloud and before upgrading to iOS 5.
If not, check at icloud.com to see if they are located here.  If they are not, try Apple Support through Express Lane (https://expresslane.apple.com) and see if they have the ability to restore them.  Just don't expect them to.

  • All my contacts are gone.  Any help on retrieving them?

All my contacts are gone from my I Pad. Any help on retrieving them

Have you tried toggling contacts off and back on again? Anything trickle in, thereafter?
If not, restore from your iCloud backup. Go to settings/general/reset/ erase all content and settings. When prompted on how to setup the device, select the iCloud backup : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859
