Contacts are gone
This past Friday night (6/26/09) my iPhone went dark. I tried powering it on and off, and hitting the home button, but nothing worked. I plugged it into a charger and nothing would come up on the screen. I cleaned the sensor areas to ensure it didn't think it was up against something.
After looking in the help section, I then noticed to hold the power and home buttons both down for 10 seconds. That reset it.
Saturday morning (6/27/09) I upgraded to 3.0 and then found all of my contacts were gone. My calendar entries, my recent phone calls, and my pictures are all still there, but my contacts are gone.
I was able to enter some of my recently called numbers into my contacts, but it would randomly assign old contact photos to the new contacts, matching up random photos to people.
I tried uploading contacts from the SIM card, but nothing happens.
Does anyone know how to recover the contacts? I have seen people having issues with double contacts, but never losing them entirely.
Just an FYI, when upgrading in the past, I connected to my PC at work, but in this case, I upgraded from home where I rarely connect with my iPhone.
Thanks,
Kara
The iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer for contacts with the ability to sync contacts with the supported application on multiple computers.
Contacts are included with your iPhone's backup along with other iPhone data, but it isn't a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for this data.
The iPhone does not support storing contacts or any data on the SIM card, which is limited to a name and 2 phone numbers and maybe a single email address for contacts.
You can try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.
Out of curiousity since I see the same reported often by Windows users, how do you get by without having any contact info available on your computer? If only email addresses are available for your contacts on your computer, and if only phone numbers are available for your contacts on your iPhone and the same with previous phones used, wouldn't it be beneficial to consolidate all contact info into one central location on your computer which can be kept synchronized with your iPhone? For every contact - their name, company, business and personal email addresses, business and personal phone numbers, and business/personal physical and mailing addresses all in one place.

Hello can someone help me I have an iphone 4 and my daughter has an ipod touch we are on the same email address but somehow with in the last 25hrs all of my contacts are gone and only hers on on my phone is there a way for me to get all my contacts back?
If you need assistance with finding any of your restores or attempting to restore from any that happened prior to his incident follow this article

IF you do find a backup that has your contacts; I'd /highly/ recommand turning off your wifi network after the restore is finished because if the issue is with your iCloud your contacts may merge back with her's.
With iCloud you DO NOT want to share the account; bad things happen Evil evil thigns...
But in all seriousness; if two devices have the same iCloud; iCloud is told to merge and sync infomation between hte two and can't tell that it doesn't belong to the same person -
Me and my daughter had been using the same apple id, she was triyng to change it, now all of my iphone contact are gone, what can i do ti get it back , this is very important to me.
Your contacts are helpd on the server, so if you sign out from your iCloud account and sign into another one they will disappear. If you sign back into the original account they will reappear.

While synching my iPhone, a box popped up and said that so many of my contacts are going to change. That happened before and my contacts and my wifes contacts ended up in each others phones. So we just had to go through and delete the ones we didnt want. When I did it this time, half of my contacts are gone and I have all of my wifes. Any way I can get my contacts back?
You should have been sycning them with your computer all along. Sync them from your computer back to the iphone.

while trying to update my version, itunes kept timing out. I successfully updated another phone w/o a problem. After 8 hours of attempting and even trying 2 different computers, I decided to "restore"! My bad!!! Was so frustrated by then I just did it. Now, phone is as if I took it out of the box! Contacts are gone, calendar entries gone etc. Is there any way to get back that info? I checked in outlook, but it appears that none of my back-ups ever "took". Outlook in empty!
The only way you can get back some info is to restore your phone from the most recent backup. Naturally, any data added to the phone since that last backup and current, will be gone.

I have downloaded IOS7 on my 4s and everything worked fine. Now I downloaded IOS 7.0.2 and my notes, reminders, and contacts are gone. How do I get them back? I have backed up my phone, but not after I did the IOS7 update. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Hi kamcop68,
If you have a recent backup available (even pre-iOS7), you may want to try restoring your data from there. You may find the following article helpful:

i have a 3gs that i just updated to 5.0. all my contacts are gone. how can i get them back?
Are your contacts still on your computer? If yes, set one contact up on the phone and sync it, you'll get the option to merge data.
If there are no more contacts on the computer, see if your latest backup still has the info, if you did not sync after you lose the info, they are still part of the backup.

Have you failed to utilize the device as designed? -
I was in a pub in Scotland & used their wi-fi. An update offer that looked legit popped up & I ran it. Took several minutes, rebooted & all seemed fine except all my contacts are gone. Any ideas?
Thanks,
I'll give those drivers a try the next time I install Windows 8. However I still don't understand how they would be any different to what is included in Boot Camp Assistant that came with Mountain Lion. Can you or anyone else confirm that they are different?
Can you also confirm that you have the Bluetooth radios in Device Manager and that you can discover Bluetooth devices under Windows.
Last question - do you run more than 1 partition in Windows? -
I updated the software on my iphone to 7.0.4 and since then all my contacts are gone. I tried to sign into icloud and it said my account is not verified. It said I should go to my mail to see how to verify my account but there is no instruction in my mail
Hi stanlaw,
Welcome to the Support Communities!
The information below should help you with this.
Associating and verifying email addresses with your Apple ID
http://support.apple.com/kb/HE68
How to verify the primary email address for your Apple ID
When you first create an Apple ID (using your email address) a verification email will be sent to that address. If you sign in to your Apple ID from the link in that email, the email address will be verified as the primary email address for your Apple ID. You can also resend the email verification if the email address is not verified:
1. Sign in to My Apple ID to manage your account information.
2. Click Resend under Primary Email Address.
3. Verify your changes by following the link in the email you will receive from Apple and signing back in to your account.
I hope this information helps ....
Happy Holidays!

I have an android and all of a sudden all my contact are gone. How can I get them back?
If you were not syncing and backing up your phone to either iTunes or iCloud, then they are gone. There is no "undo".

My daughter got an iphone. She set up using my apple ID. She deleted all the contacts that appeared on her phone and now they seem to be gone completely. Is it possible that she deleted contacts from the cloud? Are they permanently gone?
The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts. Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.
