Contacts can't connect to the account "Yahoo!".

I have a yahoo account and I check my emails using the Mail app that comes with my MacBook Air.
For some reason, Contacts can't connect to the account Yahoo. It keeps popping out a little window that says:
Contacts can't connect to the account "Yahoo!".
Enter the password for the user "[email protected]"
Password:  [ }
I have entered my password over a dozen times and it tries to connect. A few times the little windows keeps coming back and I have tried re-entering the password. I have checked and double check I enter the right password. Then other times, it comes the same little window but a different message. The window is tittled: The operation could not be completed and under that it says:  No other information is available about the problem.
I have also gone to Preferences for Contacts and then click on "Edit Account...". When I do that, the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" window opens. Next to my Yahoo account I click on "Details". When I do that, a Yahoo little window opens displaying my email address and below there are 3 boxes. First one has my name. Second one has my password. I have tried re-typing my password over a dozen times. Then finally, the last box says Description and there I have Yahoo!
I hope someone knows what is my issue or if there is an issue between Apple and Yahoo where they don't talk to each other well.
Thank you
James

Thank you Linc for looking after my post.
I checked in my Yahoo account under:
Set up your second sign-in verification
Back to account info
Protect your account
Second sign-in verification adds an extra level of protection to your account. Learn more
Get started
and I currently don't have that option activated.
Can you elaborate as where or how can I find out where I could have activated a 2-step verification.
Thank you
James

Talked with Apple support and could not get this resolved.  We first tried going to Mail Preferences and making sure everything on the accounts were correct.  I do have two Yahoo email accounts on this computer.  Next time I called we went to System Preferences - Mail, Contacts, & Calendar's and deleted each account.  Then added them back.  I'm still getting the error message.

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
You may have multiple entries. Delte them all.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, enter the part after the @ sign in the search bar, hit enter

  • When setting up new godaddy pop mail account, I get this error: Internet Accounts preferences can't connect to the account

Trying to set-up new godaddy mail account. Walked through it with the godaddy rep, so the settings are correct. It is a pop account and I merely want it to function within Mail. (I have other accounts like it that work with no problem.) However, when I try to go online with the account, I get this error message: "Internet Accounts Preferences can't connect to the account..." It then prompts me to enter the password for the account and says it is "Unable to verify account or password."
Godaddy says it is an Apple Mail issue because the account works fine in their Workspace. I sent test messages and when I login at godaddy, the messages are there. However, for some reason, Mail won't connect to it. Any ideas?
Thank you. I'm running OS X, version 10.9.4.

Yes. The account is there. There's just a verification with password issue. I had to change my password at Godaddy to include caps, special character, etc., and reinstall the account. Then I had to tweet the settings a bit. But think I have it resolved. Thanks.

  • Have IMAC, Mountain Lion mail. Each time I open mail, the message Mail can't connect to the account "Google" followed by a request for a password of an acct that was previously deleted. How do I get rid of the message? Thanks

I have an IMAC, Mountain Lion. Each time I open my mail, a message box appears with the message Mail can't connect to the account "Google", followed by Enter the password for the user   *****@gmail.com. The full account that appears is an account that I had previously deleted. I cannot prevent the message box from appearing. What do I have to tweak in order for this annoying box to keep reappearing. I have deleted everything I know of in Google mail and my IMAC mail. Thanks for any feedback

From the Mail menu bar, select
    Window ▹ Connection Doctor
Look for the unwanted SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the window that opens. Double-click it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The unwanted one will be selected. Click the minus-sign button to delete it, then click OK.
If there's more than one unwanted account, repeat.

If your password is accepted, and Mail connects to the account, but you're prompted for the password repeatedly, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Note: these steps don't apply if the server rejects the password. That's a different problem.
    Step 1
When prompted for the password, check the box marked Remember this password in my keychain.
    Step 2
Check that the keychain is working.
    Step 3
Check that the default keychain is unlocked.

The easiest way to fix the hosts file is to restore it from a backup that predates the modification, or to copy the unmodified file from another Mac. If you can't do that, then do as below.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open -e /etc/hosts
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Paste into a Terminal window by pressing command-V. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1                              localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1                                        localhost
Below that, you may see some other lines. The first 9 lines should be exactly as above, apart from differences in the blank space within lines. Otherwise you can't use this procedure—STOP and ask for guidance.
If the contents of the TextEdit window are as described, close it, then enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (by copy and paste):
    sudo sed -i~ '10,$d' /etc/hosts
You may be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. Quit Terminal.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
That will fix the hosts file. There is now a copy of the old hosts file with the name "hosts~" in the same folder as "hosts". You can delete the copy if you wish. Don't delete the file named "hosts".

  • Internet Accounts preferences can't connect to the account -

Updating 17th October to Yosemite and working fine until 3rd November.
Mail was suddenly not able to connect to one of my external hosted e-mail accounts. Another account, same external virtual hosting but other domain, username, pwd is still working fine. Account settings in Mail are exact the same for both accounts (IMAP and SMTP). It's now a week trying to find the problem without any result. Very strange is, that Mail is sometimes suddenly able to connect the invalid account: Last week if I was away from the Mac for 20 minutes, coming back, the account was online. I was able to do some mails and cleanup my inbox. It ends if i reboot the Mac. In my network all Mavericks Macs, iPhones, iPads are connecting well this account.
I did a Mail setup just with the invalid account in a clean Guest User. No chance to connect the invalid account. Adding the other working one was just a thing of seconds.
I found that in System Preferences > Internet Accounts for the invalid account a pop-up asks for "Enter the password for …". Doing so it comes up with "Unable to verify account name or password" with the only chance to Cancel. I think there must be a starting point to my problem.
Is anyone knowing about this? Any help is very welcome.

I'll pass this along to all. I have the same smtp issue. I have two Cox email accounts and a number of Gmail accounts. The Cox smtp server goes offline. Gmail is fine. Yesterday I began pressing every button and the following worked, why, beats me.
Open MAIL got to MAIL PULLDOWN then PREFERENCES then ACCOUNTS then SELECT THE EMAIL ACCOUNT and look at ACCOUNT INFORMATION - now at the bottom hit the ARROW at OUT GOING MAIL SERVER (SMTP) which brings up a list of severs SELECT EDIT SMTP SEVER LIST. now this bring up a list of servers  HIT THE ADVANCED BUTTON which brings the properties of the highlighted server below. LOOK AT THE TWO PORT BOXES.
The first selection says USE DEFAULT PORTS (25 465 587)
The second selection asks you to ENTER CUSTOM PORT.
FOR COX: The Cox website says to use port 465. I SELECTED CUSTOM PORT AND ENTERED PORT 465 and exited Preferences AND IT WORKED!!!
    So far so good today.
I have no idea whether this has any relevance to the rest of you using other email servers so good luck.

  • Reminders brings up message: Reminders can't connect to the account "Exchange". This is not my account; it then requests a password for an e-mail address which is not mine. Can anyone help?

Every time I open Reminders it brings up a reference to an account that is not mine and asks for a password for an e-mail address which is not mine. I have to cancel to proceed.

Does anyone else ever have physical access to your computer? Does the address belong to one of your friends/family/contacts? Have you recently had to take in your computer for repair, or given remote access to anyone?
It's very unlikely that you have been hacked - a hacker does not normally add their own email address to your system.

  • Emails will not send - Mail can't connect to the a...

After having no issues with sending emails for years suddenly I am continually getting the following meassge when trying to send emails. Eventually after putting this password in up to twenty times the email will send.
    The message is:
Mail can't connect to the account "mail.btinternet.com:[email protected]" Enter the password for user "[email protected]"
This is happening on all of our computers: Macbook Pro, Macbook Air and Imac and started about 2 weeks ago. It occurs for every sent email.
Any ideas on how to stop this?

I have logged into Bt.com and there is no issues there. Sent an email from there an it was received.
Also spent 2 long hours sharing a screen with someone from BT who obviously didn't know what they were doing as they did not even look in the MAIL preferences.
This is the error message we receive:
The server “mail.btinternet.com” cannot be contacted on the default ports.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
Any reason why there server can't be reached. We have been using these settings for years without issue?
    Thanks

    Hi.
What port is set in your smtp account ?
It could be that your whole account has now been transferred to Critical Path - you can tell this from logging into webmail via bt.com - if it doesn't say BT Yahoo in the title area, you've been transferred and should alter the settings.
This will, of course, probably cause issues for 100s of 1000s of people. An email should have been received titled "The new BT Mail is coming your way", and gives some details including a link of what to do to various devices and mail clients :-

  • Why can't I buy an In-APP purchase? It says that I can not connect to the iTunes Store and that I will have to contact iTunes Store Support.

    Hey everyone
With my iPhone 4S I purchased the NAVIGON Europe App, downloaded needed files and maps within the App and all worked fine. But when I try to buy certain add-ons via In-App purchase I get a window telling me that it can'T connect to the iTunes store and that I have to contact iTunes store support.
This is what I have already tried to make it work:
Reset my iphone via iTunes (set it up as new iPhone)
Changed itunes store payment option from Click&Buy to credit card
    restarted iPhone several times
    scratched my head
checked restrictions under settings in iPhone: all is correct; in-App purchases allowed
    chewed my lip
finally sent a message to the itunes store support.. waiting for their answer
no changes so far. I still get the same error message.
    Any ideas?

You will need to contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

I have the same problem with my 3rd gen Apple TV. I can preview iTunes movies, stream from my Mac, Airplay from my other devices but I cannot rent a movie on iTunes. Every time I try I get "Can't connect to ITunes" and "Unable to sign in". Had technical support review the problem over the phone and they agreed to send me a new one. Same problem. Interestingly enough my 2nd gen Apple TV works just fine.

The iphone is not a storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The exception being itunes purchases.
You need to copy everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to the new one.
