Contacts cause crash and return to home screen after iOS4 upgrade

After upgrading our iPhone 3GS to iOS4, it crashes when clicking on contacts from the Phone app. The Contacts app itself will not open. This is making it extremely difficult to even use the phone to call anyone.
The same issue is also described in the following forum posts:

Check Settings > Store and make sure the Apple ID that is shown is the same as the one used to buy the apps in question.
Also, try a Reset (hold down the sleep and home buttons, ignore the red Off slider, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons).

  • Mail inbox shuts automatically and returns to home screen

    Hi everyone,
My iPhone3GS mail inbox displays and even updates for a few seconds then quits automatically to the home screen every time. This only started happening after only 4 days of usage without no apparent reason. I am devastated as I need to send emails on the move. Worked fine for the past 3 days though and I haven't done anything unusual at all.
I have noticed a few threads regarding this issue but I haven't seen any real answers so far.
    Can anyone help? Thank you.

Well I had some success in correcting this situation. I have five accts with one of my earthlink accts causing all the problems. I had gone through all the suggested corrections and much more many times over with no success. This last time here is what I did...
1 I deleted the offending acct from my iPhone
    2 I reset my iPhone
3 I went into the webmail portion of my earthlink acct and deleted all emails that were not from my contacts list. This included all the junk, spam and returned emails for the first 50 emails. I made sure that at least the first 25 emails (as that is my setting on the iPhone) were clean.
4 I reset my email acct password on the webmail
    5 Then restarted my iPhone
6 I added back my offending acct
7 It reloaded the first 25 emails, which were now clean of spam and whatever else might be lurking
This solved it, at least for now. I had previously done all of this many times over, except for the clean out and re-passwording of my email acct. So it would seem that offending emails can cause the iPhone to crash. Maybe it has something to do with the lack of a Junk filter on the iPhone. I don't understand enough of these things to know, but it all works for now. Hope this helps someone.

  • Why do all my apps never open and return to home screen?

I installed my apps, but now every time I try to open one I am immediately returned to the home screen and can't use anything. Any ideas?

GREAT, thanks for the fix to a bizarre problem that was driving me crazy! You can always count on Apple discussions, can't say the same about this whole "2.0 transition", it's been a bit rough and I can't get push contacts or calendars from MobileMe to work, but I'll give things a couple of days to get back on track.
I had a strong feeling things would be difficult today after the WWDC keynote, particularly the whole push functionality given the myriad of syncing problems we've had to deal with in the previous non-push world

  • Running ios5.1.1 on original iPad. system constantly crashes and returns to home page when on the web. using safari.

Running IOs 5.1.1 on original Ipad. System constantly crashes returning to the home screen when in internet. Using Safari browser. is there anything I can upgrade or clear to help??

There are a few things that you could try. First try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Cover Flow Crashes and Exits to Home Screen

Hey, guys! I'll want to report this to Apple as well. When I flip through album art using Cover Flow slowly, I don't get any problems. But when I try to go long distances, Cover Flow lags then eventually exists back to the Home Screen. Does anyone else get this problem?

    Hi,
I don't have this problem with my iPod Touch, you can send feedback to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html

  • Why does my iPhone 4s stop midstream and return to home screen?

Had my phone checked at genius bar yesterday and they say everything is working just fine. But midstream of different applications, it stops and returns to homescreen. I try turning off and then on again, and it continues to happen, with various applications. Any thoughts? Also not holding charge as I think it should........

Thanks. I am reviewing the apps. I wonder if the number of photos, which is quite large, on the phone could somehow be contributing to faulty operation. I want to get the photos off the phone, but don't want to lose them on the computer. Do I turn off cloud backup from phone? I know this is off subject, but just wondering if this could be part of the problem.

  • My photos will not load on the iPhone. Both directly accessing 'Photos' and from 'Camera roll' results in applications shutting down by itself and returning to home screen

    Help please

Ighnot, are you jailbroken? Cause I am and I have the same problem except worse. I can't save a single pic, every single time I get the thumbnail grey box with jpg in it and the actual pic is black. Only way I get pic is by zooming in then taking screenshot and I still get the stupid safari toolbox and address bar in the pic

  • What should i do if my contact app freezes and goes to home screen by itself?

Hi, does anyone know how to deal with this kind of problem?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • ITunes connect screen after iOS4 upgrade

    Hello Everyone,
Only thing that has changed in the last 24 hours is the software on the phone to the new iOS4. It has happened 2x this AM where I will pull my phone out of my pocket and it is displaying the plug into iTunes message, and I am only able to make emergency calls. If you open the little information button on the bottom right hand near the slider bar it shows the IMEI as unknown along with the SIM as unknown. Haven't seen anything online like this for the 3GS as of yet, hopefully I am not the only one. When I get home I am thinking about downgrading the OS. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks
    nick

I had a similar problem. iPhone found wifi, lost wifi, accepted password, lost password, saw networks, lost networks, displayed network address, lost the address.
If your iPhone is experiencing intermittent wifi connections try this Trouble Shooting Guide http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
If it turns out you have a hardware problem and you're still under warranty take your phone to the Apple Store and have them fix it. If you're out of warranty you can try the fix I did to get my wifi back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1azZWWkmSg

  • I am having an issue where safari keeps crashing and returning to the home screen on an ipad1

safari on my ipad1 keeps crashing and returning to the home screen. rebooting does not fix the problem neither has a full reset through itunes from a backup or setting up as a new machine. Cab nay body help?

If restoring from a backup doesn't help, you must have something corrupt in the backup - like a Safari bookmark perhaps - or something in the Safari history. Try the last tip in this list first.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Close Safari and all apps. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Cache. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
