Contacts disappear when Exchnage server is unavailable

We had our Exchange server shutdown this weekend for maintenance and this led to unpleasant situation when all Contacts, Emails and Calendar entries disappeared from iPhone. This is completely unacceptable from business perspective. I used Nokia E71 previously and haven't had such issues even if username/password were incorrectly set for Mail for Exchange account. Now I see that iPhone can't be used as reliable device for business trips - what am I supposed to do in case Exchange server goes down and I am somewhere abroad with no contacts, no previously recieved emails, no calendar entries??????
I understand there's a resonable explanation from Apple... but can you at least grant people a choice?
Thanks.
P.S. Hope to see this fixed with the next software update.
P.P.S. Maybe there's a chance someone know a how-to fix it?

I use a (hosted) Exchange server for my mail, and I have full access to pushed emails, my contacts, and my Calendar when the Exchange server is "offline" or I have no data connection. The only information not readily available is the email folders that are not set to Push to my iPhone, and changes that have been made while the iPhone is not connected.
With out knowing all the details, I would suspect your problem may stem from the method of the Exchange server shutdown (did it delete the data from the iPhone somehow?), or the setup on the iPhones, which is not allowing any of the Exchange data to be "kept" on the iPhone.
Since the default for Exchange ActiveSync on the iPhone is to turn Push "ON" for the email Inbox (ONLY), Contacts, and Calendar that's probably not the case, but I would still check in Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars->your Exchange acct->Make sure Mail, Calendars and Contacts are set to "On" so the data is pushed, and also check Mail Days to Sync (No Limit, 1 Day, 3 Days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month are the options), and Mail Folders to Push (by default it's only Inbox, but you can select others).

Technically the limit of 4Gb per folder should have been removed in a recent patch. Personally I an unconvinced as the developers have said so twice before and something else arose to bite people at 4Gb. So the limit probably does not exist anymore and moving mail and compacting will fix it without data loss if it occurs as recent issues have been about displaying mail after the 4Gb point, not storing it.
Use the Ctrl and Shift keys in conjunction with your mouse to make multiple selections.
click followed by Shift+ Click selects everything between the two clicks, including the items clicked.
Holding the Ctrl key while clicking allows you to select or deselect mail to either fine turn the list from shift clicking or to make one of your own.
Ctrl +A selects everything in the list from the current selection to the end.
One option is create an important folder and move your important stuff to it then ctrl +A the whole remaining inbox.

  • Contacts and calendar items disappear when exchange server is off

    Hi All
I've been having this problem for a few weeks now and it's most frustrating. My iphone is setup to sync over the air to our corporate exchange server. It seems that when the server is down for repair/patching ALL my contacts and calendar items disappear from my iphone. This doesn't seem to happen if the phone is out of signal?
I know that I can sync directly with Outlook, however this would then mean that the phone is only updated when synced with my laptop at work. If I sync both over the air AND with Outlook, I get duplicates of everything in my calendar.
I'm not restoring my iphone to factory defaults to get rid of the duplicates and go back to over the air sync only.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get calendar and contacts to work "offline" when the exchange server is down?
Main PC is running Windows 7 and exchange is 2007. This problem is only recent, I think in the last month of two. Nothing has changed other than the last few firmware updates from Apple.

hi, cheers for the info. That would make sense, however how come when I'm out of signal and not connected to wifi, the data doesn't also disappear as that too would render the server "unavailable".
Is there a way to make the iphone keep a copy of the data much the same as "offline mode" in Outlook where you can still browse your email, calendar and contacts when the server is offline, and it picks up where it left off when the server is available again?
I appreciate this may not be a "problem" as such, but is frustrating as all my contacts and calendar live in Outlook and I can't function without them

  • Why do my contacts disappear when i turn my icloud off?

I don't know that much about icloud but i signed into it anyway and have it on. and one day i though no point in having it on so i turned icloud off and the next day i noticed all my contacts where gone. so i paniced. i tried the back up from my computer and that didn't work. i went to setting > contacts and then import froim sim that did nothing so i then re signed into icloud again and they all came back.
I want to turn icloud off but i can't cause then all my contacts disappear.

This happens because when you sync them with iCloud they are moved from your phone to the iCloud server.  If you turn off iCloud you are disconnecting your device from the server so it can no longer access your contacts (or other iCloud data).
If you no longer want to sync your contacts with iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts off and choose Keep on My iPhone.  That will keep a copy of your contact on your phone.

  • Why did all contacts disappear when I turned on iCloud?

Yesterday I turned on iCloud for my contact info, and when I tried to access my contacts some hours later, discovered that all my contacts disappeared from my iPhone4.
When I turned off iCloud for my contacts (iCloud is still on for other stuff) my contacts immediately reappeared.
    What gives?

Thanks for the advice, but after this and other hassles, I've decided to not use iCloud in any way.  I'm sticking with the old way of syncing my iphone via the cable and iTunes as well.  Suits me just fine.
Other than not providing a detailed manual on iOS5 in general, and iCloud in particular, I'm not blaming Apple here.  I used to be on top of my Mac and Apple devices, but somewhere along the road I got left behind, and I just don't have the time anymore to catch up, especially when that means doing so by trial and error.
I'm still an avid fanboy of my Apple computer, iPhone and recently Apple TV.  I'm sure iCloud is wonderful, but having never successfully used it, I don't miss it.
    Thanks again.

  • Contacts Disappear when moved between Groups

I work within Outlook 2007 on my PC. When I move my icloud contacts from one group to another, those contacts disappear totally. They are no longer even in the "Master" contact list. Are they gone forever or is there a way to retrieve them? And is there a way to prevent it from happening again?

I had the same issue as you did -- for a few weeks now I've been suffering through agonizingly slow Contacts performance.
The way I resolved it was:
    1) Quit Contacts
    2) Go to system preferences and go into iCloud, then uncheck contacts -- choosing to delete from mac.
    3) Go into system preferences and to Internet Accounts and again uncheck contacts under any of the accounts it's enabled on (gmail, yahoo, etc).
    4) Go to your user's library folder (easiest way is to open a finder window, hold down the option key on the keyboard and from the Go menu, select Library).
    5) Delete anything referring to Address book or com.apple.address book....   -- check these folders in particular:
         - Address Book
         - Application Support
         - Caches
         - Preferences
    6) Restart your computer
    7) Go back into System preferences and enable contacts from wherever you want (iCloud, etc.)
    8) If it's not quite enabling (appears to enable, but checkbox doesn't show), then do one more restart of the computer.
    9) Now open Contacts and allow it to sync

  • HELP!  Contacts disappeared when deleting mobile me account.

On my iPhone 4S I just deleted my mobile me account from the email accounts because I don't use it for emails.  Then, all my most recent contacts disappeared.  I tried synching thinking they would come back from my computer and no luck.  I tried adding the account back and my phone says that my contacts, emails, etc from my mobile me account will be automatically moved to iCloud.  Help please.

Unless you were also syncing your MobileMe online contacts with a supported address book app on your computer as designed and intended, syncing your iPhone with iTunes accomplishes nothing especially if you don't have the supported address book app on your computer selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences to sync contacts.
If your MobileMe contacts were automatically moved to iCloud, create your iCloud account on your iPhone.

  • MY contacts disappear when my wife deletes them on HER phone

Since upgrading our 3 iphone3gs to ios 5 our contacts have been screwy. While some are complaining they have lost their contacts, ours disappear from other phones when deleted on another phone.
For example, after upgrading I noticed I had my wife and daughters contacts on my phone. So I deleted them and the same contacts deleted from their phone. I have done all of the recommended fixes turning icloud on and off, resyncing, sending a text message and changing a contact name, even restoring my phone and while my wife and daughters contacts reappear, mine don't.
Is the problem that all 3 phones are under my Apple ID or that I have merged them all to icloud. I simply want to delete their contacts off my phone and vice versa and have only mine show in contact list.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    John

Yes, the problem is that you have all 3 phones under the same Apple ID, and possibly you probably use the same computer to sync the 3 phones?
    Try the following, might help:
    1. Creating different Apple IDs that would use the different phones.
    2. Uncheck 'Sync Contacts' option in iTunes, then try Step 3.
    3. On the phone: Go to Contacts -> Groups (Top Right Corner) - see if contacts are synced with a particular email account, and try changing it to another, or use the 'On My iPhone' option if you have manually entered contacts into your phone.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help!  contacts disappear when computer is shut down

Every time I shut down my iMac, my contacts folder completely vanishes. The first time it happened, I didn't know what happened. I rebuilt my address book. Today I had to shut down my computer because I was having a glitch with Safari, and when I rebooted, my contacts folder was gone again.
I was syncing with Entourage, and the contacts vanished from there as well. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions how to avoid this problem?

  • Neeeeeeeeeeed a help my contact disappear when they call me

    dear all
i'll be much obliged if some one can help me to solve this problem , i'm using iphone 3gs & sync my contact by outlook but all my contact start with the area code like "(+2) or (+218) like this so if some one calling me localy his name don't appear just his number due to my iphone didn't apply his number with the number saved with area code so read it as a strange number so it's a very big problem because almost of my contacts i didn't know them before answering

The Show My Caller ID setting controls just the display of your number on the phones of people you call.  Some places do not allow this to be disabled.
    f
Incoming ID should always be displayed, if available.  The Show My Caller ID setting will not change this.
Do you have the full version (including country code) of phone numbers in your contacts?  e.g +1(123)456-7890

  • Contacts disappear...  What is going on?

Every few days some of my contacts are just gone.

I have the same problem, All of my contacts disappear when I try to add or edit something. At first I thought it was some problem with .mac sync, becasue I would get an error when I tried to restore them from sync. I disabled sync for contacts but still they disappear when I use the Address Book. I may try disabling sync altogether and see what happens.
I have a backup that I have to keep restoring "revert to backup" but it's gettting annoying.
Let me know if you find a fix. I'll do the same if I find one.

  • Outlook 2010 "Server is unavailable" error when starting remote app

    All,
I have recently built and configured a new server to run Remote Desktop Services.  It in on Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit.
I have published numerous applications (e.g. Adobe, Visio, Project, etc. as well as Office 2010) to the host server.  Everything works with the exception of Outlook 2010 (client of an Exchange 2010 server).  When I or any of my users try to bring
it up in the RDS portal, it goes through the normal start-up of any Outlook first use and looks for an existing email account.  As it is trying to load the user profile, an error pops up saying "The server is unavailable."  Clicking "Retry" does
    not work at all.
When I run Outlook directly from the RDS host server itself, it loads up and runs fine so I know the RDS server can contact the Exchange server.
Any ideas on why the Outlook application works on the host server but will not work when trying to run it through the RDS Web Access portal?
    Thanks.

  • OSX Server webdav bug? - files and folders disappears when filenames are fewer than 7 characters

OSX Server webdav bug? - files and folders disappears when filenames are fewer than 7 characters
    Dear Community,
i have a BIG problem with Apple webdav.
All files or folders with fewer than 7 characters in filename disappear.
The problems is only between Mac Server and Mac Clients
and exists since OSX Server 1 (Server 10.7, 10.8, 10.9) on ALL Macs i know.
The problem persist ever and occurs in the following settings:
    Mac Server (1.x, 2.x, 3.x) <> Mac Clients (10.7.x, 10.8.x, 10.9.x, 10.6 not tested)
The problem does NOT occur in the following settings:
    Mac Server <> Windows Clients
    Mac Server <> Linux Clients
Linux Server (my Webhoster) <> Mac Clients
Windows Server (my Webhoster) <> Mac Clients
So i think it is not a problem with server itselv or a single client only,
it is probaly a problem with the combination betwen mac servers and mac clients.
This is NOT a problem with MY MacServers/Clients only and not with only one Server.
It occurs in many different Places and many different Machines.
I have contact Apple Support more then tree times (always when i setup a new machine with server.app)
but she said they heard first time about that and she cannot reproduce that problem.
please, can somebody try it out?
    sorry for my bad englisch.
    best regards
    rené

    Supplement note:
The Problem occurs also between OSX Server <> OpenWRT (Linux)
