Contacts have vanished

My wife has an iPhone 4S, which she has never synced to a computer, nor to iCloud. She was at a high school play last night and texted her sister to see where she was sitting. Then she turned off the ringer and put it in her purse. When the play was over she got a text and noticed it was just the number, and didn't have a name with it. Then she discovered all her contacts were missing. Today, she noticed the battery was dying extremely quickly and she's started getting strange texts from people she doesn't know.
I synced it to my computer to create a backup, but the contacts seem to be gone forever.
I'm concerned about the strange texts and the quick battery consumption. Is there some way her phone could have been hacked? I've heard of an old SMS hack. It just seems like too much of a coincidence that she would suddenly get texts from a couple of different numbers that she definitely does not know right after the strange disappearance of all her contacts.

Same thing just happened to me on the same phone!  Someone please help us!!!

  • Contacts have vanished off phone because I set up iCloud.

Hiya. I set up my iCloud acct today and my "Contacts" have completely vanished and I can't find them anywhere! Have searched support page and user manual to no avail. Please can anyone help?

I was browsing and I saw your post. The way I got my contacts and addresses back was by going to SETTINGS on my iPhone, then to mail, then to my email account and truned all of the settings to ON. I then went to iCloud on my computer, signed in and turned all of the setting to ON. Next, I went to iCloud on my iPhone and turned all of those settings ON. My contacts and addresses reappeared. I had to experiment to get to this solution. The Apple instructions did not explain enough for me to conf
This worked for me, but then again, I tried so many different things, that I may have left something out on how I got iCloud reconfigured to work properly. Good Luck.

  • Used contact categories - now all my contacts have vanished?

My question has to do with Contacts. This is my first blackberry which I've only had a couple of weeks, I was adding some new contacts and came about an option which enabled me to categories my contacts into 'personal' and 'business'.   I selected personal because the contact I was adding was a personal contact. However, when I now open my contacts from the main menu all of the business contacts I have added to date have disappeared.  I have tried to retrace my steps and undo what I have done but I can't figure out how I have managed to this. I have ‘de-selected’ the personal category in the personal contact I added but all my other contacts are still missing.   I’d appreciate your help. Many thanks in advance.

  • My contacts and appointments have vanished

I have an iphone 3gs and a pc running Vista and use Microsoft Outlook  2007. I installed iOS5 and icloud and now all of my contacts and appointments have vanished from Outlook. What should I do? I was due to buy a mac laptop this week to replace my pc but am disappointed with Apple for creating this problem. I have looked on Google and lots of people seem to have similar problems caused by icloud but no one seems to know how to rectify it.

Thanks for replying but I already have outlook on iphone. I have been syncing it all along via usb lead with no problems. Now the info is still on phone but not pc. Strangely some appointments (very few) have remained in calendar but my contacts have all vanished.

  • Iphone crashed, restarted; contacts & email have VANISHED

So I was adding an event into my iPhone Calendar today when all of a sudden it just took the liberty upon itself to randomly restart. The screen blacked out, I saw the ring o'processing, my life flashed before my eyes, and then the apple icon appeared. When it had finished powering back up, the first thing I saw on my screen was the "Add Account" section of the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" option in "Settings".
ALL of my contacts, my email accounts, and all the dates and appointments I had put into my calendar have VANISHED.
I am trying not to panic, but let me tell you, this is panic worthy. I backed my iPhone up with iTunes not too long ago, but do the backups automatically include contacts, calendars, and email information??
I can't find any mention of contacts, calendars, or email in itunes, and I don't even know how to restore my phone using the backup I made recently.
    Can anybody help??
    Please and thank you!

Apple is seriously losing my faith. My next phone may have to be an Android...
Why wait?  Take a sledge hammer to your iPhone and get an Androgyny now!!
Whatever you do, don't read the Androgyny forums about their reliability to make an informed decision before going ahead....

  • All my windows live messenger contact have disappeared of windows messenger and appeared in my phone contact list on my curve 9360, Why, and how can I get them back where they should be?

I went onto windows live messenger today and all my contacts have disappeared from it, but I also noticed that they had somehow now appeared in my curve 9360 phone contacts. How did this happen, and how can I get them back into windows live messenger and out of my phone contacts on my phone? This is driving me crazy, can anybody help please?
My phone is the curve 9360, OS is 7.0.0 bundle 2259 And it was purchased Easter Monday
    Thanks.

Thanks, but I checked iCloud and it has none of them.
If it backed up to my laptop, that died and I just got the new computer. The one that's crashed won't even boot, so there's no way to even tell if it was syncing the contacts along with all the phone photos. Literally happened at the same time - it was because I had the new computer that I was finally able to pull the photos off the phone and make room for the upgrade. It had refused to upgrade for lack of space for some time.
I had thought it was set to sync to iCloud but it vanished from BOTH my phone and the cloud. That's why I'm so angry about it.

  • I am away from home on holiday and all my contacts have disappeared from my iPad2. I have done  hard reset, but to no avail. Is there any other way to get them back other than syncing with my home pc?

I am away from home on holiday and all my contacts on my iPad have disappeared. I have tried a hard reset but they have gone. Is there anything else that can be done other than waiting until I get home to my main pc?

Upon purchase of my iPad 2 I began saving contacts to my IPad Contacts application that is already set up upon purchase of iPad 2.   I then learnt about synching ( push ) my Gmail contacts to the Ipad 2 contacts 'exchange'.   I did this happily and was very pleased with the results however when synching the first time I chose not to delete my iPad 2 contacts I had began saving upon purchase.   This meant upon opening 'contacts' I had three choices 'iPad contacts', 'Exchange contacts' or 'All contacts'.   There is no way to save ipad contacts directly to the 'Exchange contacts' it has to be saved into a file or vcard and then imported in using e-mail or a PC.
A few days in to using push/exchange I also added calendar and notes to the push/exchange as I was happy with the contacts and e-mail.   I did notice some glitches since doing using push/exchange although I think it began when initially I began pushing contacts/mail there may be a slight chance that it began when I turned on calendar and notes facility to the push/exchange. The glitches that began meant sudden blinking during or after saving in calendar, contacts and notes.   Sometimes this would mean the item added was there but also sometimes it would mean that it was not.   Also double entries began arriving on both m iPad and in my Gmail Contacts online.   These were a mix of contacts that I had and had not not created or edited since acquiring my iPad 2 so the was no pattern or obvious reason.   They were all also a mix of contacts from different groups saved in my Gmail contacts.
Today suddenly whilst adding a contact the contacts blinked shut again.   I re-opened to see what had happened wondering if my contact had been saved or not however not only did what I add not get saved but all approx 500 contacts from both my iPad contacts and my Exchange Contacts vanished from my iPad 2.   I opened and closed the contacts to see if they would return but there was nothing.   I also hibernated and then later shut down and restarted the iPad many times to no avail.   I checked my Gmail Contacts account and thankfully all my contacts were still there.   However, it was still extremely frustrating to have everything vanish from my iPad and then not just come back from there especially as he e-mails and calendar seemed to be still working fine with Exhange/push.   Also, why had the contacts saved to the IPad contacts directly vanished also ?!!   For a £800 gadget not including accessories it really is unacceptable !!!
Finally what worked for me was going to 'Settings', then going to 'mail, contacts, calendars' and then selecting the 'exchange' account and then switching 'contacts' to 'off', then I selected 'delete' iPad contacts i.e delete the contacts saved in the iPad contacts group however with nothing there to lose this time and having a feeling that perhaps that may have contributed to the issues/glitches and this contacts vanishing I clicked on the 'delete'.   I really do have a feeling that perhaps the issues may have been due to having two sets of contacts even though there were only a few there in the iPad before they vanished along with the Exchange contacts.   I clicked 'done' and then I didn't hibernate the iPad 2 instead I shut it completely down.
Upon restarting my iPad 2 I went to see if the contacts had returned but unfortunately once again they had not.   I returned to 'settings', then 'mail, contacts, calendars' and then selected 'exchange' from accounts and switched 'contacts' back on i.e enabled this once again and clicked done.   I then once again switched off ( shut down ) my iPad 2 and waited a while.   Upon restarting I again went back to contacts and found some of my contacts finally arrive but not all.   My 'push/'fetch' for exchange is set to every 15 minutes and every push/fetch showed me more and more contacts until finally I had all but one which has still not showed up !   However, I am once again happy and this time I only have one contacts group I.e for exchange and no separate iPad contacts to confuse me or iPad.   I don't know if this will mean all will be okay now as I do feel like perhaps I cannot now trust iPad contacts and maybe need to print out everything and keep this on me also just in case. I'll keep you posted !

  • My contacts just vanished all of a sudden. WTH?

Picked up my phone and my contacts have all vanished.  In messages it's just phone numbers, no names.  Anyone else had this happen?

This also happened to my wife's 4s. It just randomly lost a portion of its contacts and started showing just phone numbers. I too was able to recover them by selecting the iCloud contacts option but I also noticed that, unlike my 5s, she does not have the option to use "On My iPhone" for a default contacts location. I wondered if something got corrupted in her SIM card. I ejected, cleaned, and reinserted it but that did not restore the option. Does anyone else see this same behavior after a random loss of contacts? I'm wondering if a factory reset would remedy this. Both of us are running iOS 7.0.4.

  • After setting up iCloud, many of my Contacts have lost their picture images on my iPad and iPhone.

Any advice on restoring my Contact pictures? Thanks.

This happened to me, after talking with Apple, they said they are aware of the issue and are working to fix the issue by the end of the month (November 2011).
The issue I have is the contact pictures for my iCloud contacts all vanish (the contact remains).  They disapear all at once, randomly, but I've noticed it usually happens after I add a new contact via the iPhone.
The contact pictures are still present on the contacts when I view them on iCloud.com
To workaround, turn off Contact Sync under iCloud settings.  It'll ask if you want to delete the iCloud contacts from your device, agree (don't worry, your contacts are still in iCloud, just not your phone).
Then turn contact sync back on again, and the device will redownload all your contacts, with the pictures intact.
So far I've done had to do this a couple of times.
I much prefer using iCloud for contacts because the contact pictures are full screen, where as contact pictures sync with Exchange get reduced to tiny thumbnails.

  • My notes have vanished!

I have just go into my notes and have just noticed all of my notes have vanished! I didn't delete them as I need them! Has anyone else noticed this and how do I get them back?

Good news everybody - 10.8.3 has finally solved the problem!
There were a few things to do after updating to get it to work though:
Go into the Library folder (hold down the option key and select Library from the Go menu in the Finder)
Type com.apple.notes into the search box
    Delete everything that it finds
Go to System Preferences and select Mail, Contacts & Calendars
Go through each account, first making sure that the IMAP Path Prefix on the Advanced... button is set to INBOX and then making sure that Notes is ticked in the Use With: box.
And that was it! It only took them 7 months and 3 system patches to fix it!

  • BB Curve 9360 - half my contacts have disappeared overnight!

I woke this morning to find half my contacts had vanished! Although, looking at call history, the names were still showing up.  Anyone come across this before? How do I get them back?

  • Help my tool bars have vanished!

When I opened Illustrator CS5 today I notice all of my tool bars have vanished. I would like to know how to get them back. I'm using Windows.

Yay! it worked! The CTRL-AlT-Shift worked. I have to say when I contacted Adobe support they were no help whatsoever, just kept wanting me to buy a new program. I'm disappointed in the company's loyalty to their customers, especially for those of us who will use their products for a long time. While I don't intend to buy every updated version of the software that comes about I intend to buy them. If I'm going to spend $300+ for a program I better get lifetime support for that program.

  • I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.

help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • I just got a new iMac.  I set it up and all of my contacts have disappeared.  They have disappeared on my iPhone and my mac book air as well.  How do I get them back?

All contacts have disapppeared from my iPhone, my mac book air and my new iMac.  How do I get back.  I assume it has something to with iCloud.  Thank you.

Use your computer's backup to transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer per the instructions included with this link, or do the same with both computers networked in some fashion, which shouldn't be hard to do if both computers are connected to the same wireless network.
