Contacts mysteriously vanished!

hi-
my mail, safari, and address book were all open at the same time. all of a sudden i had to force quit all 3. just to be safe, i restarted and repaired permissions.
upon restart, i noticed that there were no names in my ichat account--just addresses.
i checked my address book and there were no addresses in there at all! just minutes before i had over 300 contacts.
then, i checked my .mac (online) address book--there were only 22 contacts in there.
i ran isync just to see what would happen and only 5 of the contacts updated to my computer.
i have everything backed up in other places, however, this still bugs me. what if i didnt? how did my stuff on .mac get lost?
how did my contacts on the computer vanish?
has anyone else ran into this before?
any help would be appreciated.
thanks a lot!

Unfortunately, the "Address Book Lost Data" bug seems to have been around a while - searching through the discussion here will find plenty of references. Hopefully a fix is in the works.
Just a guess on the path of issues:
1) Address Book lost data.
2) Restart Address Book without saving the ".previous" file.
3) Make one minor change, now there is a new ".previous" file with almost nothing in it.
4) iSync to .Mac account "updates" the .Mac file with all the deletions...
Might be variants on this theme....
I've been using the .Mac Backup program, and believe that insulates me from a true loss since I can back up to a point in time. The "time machine" change coming up in the next OS will make this point moot.

  • All of my contacts mysteriously Vanished!

for no reason! All of my contacts are wiped and replaced with a very old set of email addresses!! not even the contacts on my home comp. My favorites are gone. just the numbers are left with no names. ***?? I have no Idea why or how or how to get my phone numbers back. I sync regularly and back up to the cloud. this should not be happening. One thing is that I just recently upgraded to iOS 7, like a month ago.
the only thing I can think of is that I went down to 1% in battery life, which is lower than I usually go but I never actually ran out of power. the phone did not shut down because of lack of power.
HELP, I need all my numbers back!!
    thanks!
    michael

Contacts can come from iCloud, e-ms, Facebook, just the device, ...
knowing where the were will be key to getting them back.

  • Does some of your new contacts simply vanishes? iPhone 4S

At first I thought I hadn't done it properly while entering a new contact (first typing the number and then create new contact), because when I searched it it was not there. Well, many times after that and it kept happening... Now I'm sure: some of my new contacts simply vanishes.. please, anybody know why and how to fix it?
    Thank you!!!

    One account in my iPhone;
I sync it by usb cable with my Macbook pro.
It is happening without any pattern...

  • My contacts just vanished all of a sudden. WTH?

Picked up my phone and my contacts have all vanished.  In messages it's just phone numbers, no names.  Anyone else had this happen?

This also happened to my wife's 4s. It just randomly lost a portion of its contacts and started showing just phone numbers. I too was able to recover them by selecting the iCloud contacts option but I also noticed that, unlike my 5s, she does not have the option to use "On My iPhone" for a default contacts location. I wondered if something got corrupted in her SIM card. I ejected, cleaned, and reinserted it but that did not restore the option. Does anyone else see this same behavior after a random loss of contacts? I'm wondering if a factory reset would remedy this. Both of us are running iOS 7.0.4.

  • Contact pictures vanished.

Firstly I notice that all the contact photos were missing from the iPhone after I'd gone to great length over time to have a large percentage of the 3000 contacts with a matching photo. I thought syncing the iPhone would replace them from Outlook but it has just removed them from there too. I realise that they are probably gone now but it’s a bit of a mystery as they have been fine for over 2 years and there is no apparent settings to control it. Any ideas so it won't happen again.

I'm marking it as unanswered because it's unanswered.

  • Contacts have vanished off phone because I set up iCloud.

Hiya. I set up my iCloud acct today and my "Contacts" have completely vanished and I can't find them anywhere! Have searched support page and user manual to no avail. Please can anyone help?

I was browsing and I saw your post. The way I got my contacts and addresses back was by going to SETTINGS on my iPhone, then to mail, then to my email account and truned all of the settings to ON. I then went to iCloud on my computer, signed in and turned all of the setting to ON. Next, I went to iCloud on my iPhone and turned all of those settings ON. My contacts and addresses reappeared. I had to experiment to get to this solution. The Apple instructions did not explain enough for me to conf
This worked for me, but then again, I tried so many different things, that I may have left something out on how I got iCloud reconfigured to work properly. Good Luck.

  • Surprisingly, My contact data vanished without any connection, How it is possible and what to do to get back from ICloud.

I have an Iphone 4s, I did the back up a month ago with Icloud. yesterday, all of a sudden, without any computer or any connection, My contact data which added during last month (after back up) vanished. I am confused what might has happened and is there any way to get the contact details back?

    Hi Michael Gorsline1,
I understand that you turned off iCloud on your Mac and subsequently lost all of your contacts, notes, and reminders. If your information, remains on iCloud.com, you can merge that information back onto your Mac by signing back into iCloud and selecting the services you would like to sync.

  • Photos mysteriously vanished and iphone won't restore from backup. iOS 6

Ok well hopefully someone has a good answer for this because I know numerous techs that currently work for apple that are going to have some very colorful stories to tell their familes over dinner about an irate customer they were trying to "help" earlier in the day.  After updating to iOS 6 I suddenly realized that not only was every App, contact, and song missing but also every picture that I had on my phone.  I began to sigh a sigh of relief when I realized that after syncing with itunes the Apps, contacts, and songs were replaced with great haste until I realized that I still had none of my pictures.  Mind you alot of the pictures are saved in otehr locations on the computer and some to my email but there are several pictures of my twin baby girls that have been saved over the course of the last 8 months that were only on the camera roll.  I looked into the issue a bit and found a solution that looked promising.  Restore the iPhone 4s to the backup file that was made by iTunes that was before the pictures were all erased.  Followed the manual perfectly only to recieve error messages about how there is not enough space on my hard drive to create a file.  Not only is there more than enough space but the message itself is extremely confusing because I am not trying to make a file....I am trying to apply a file that is already on the C Drive to the iPhone through iTunes.  I have manually went into my hard drive and located where the file is being kept.  Mind you it is all encrypted but after the arduous task of adding up all of the little file's and big file's sizes I have come to the conclusion that this is indeed the backup file seeing as how before all my information got molested I had a little under a gig of space of my phones 13.5 capacity and after adding aaaaaaalllllll the files together in the "backup" folder I came out to a figure of ~12.5.  If anyone is willing to or can help then please do because currently teh words irrate and ****** don't begin to illustrate the anger that is boiling within me at the thought of paying a company for a service and being a loyal customer and then having 8 months of memories ripped away because of some glitch or mishap.  Thanks    (to whoever can help, not to Apple ((Apple can rot and die for all I care))  )

Just had the same problem, did this and it worked.
Delete all of your previous backups, do an new backup from scratch, and then restore from the new backup.

  • Contacts keep vanishing

I am having the same problem EVERY SINGLE DAY SINCE UPGRADING FROM IPHONE 4S TO IPHONE 5S 64GB.
    Few facts:
    -I don't use icloud
-I haven't backed up my phone since I purchased it
It first happened when I restored my new phone. The first two times at the same exact time it seemed around 7pm i lost my contacts. they never came back. I had to do a restore.
Now, throughout the day, evenings i lose my contacts, i go to favorites it still shows numbers, contacts is empty, i flip back and forth a few times on those two tabs and names start to come back in the favorites. few minutes they start to come back, not at all once, few at a time and sometimes the ones that come back go back away for others but after about 10 minutes or so id say they all come back EXCEPT NEW contacts, street addresses, modifications I make to contacts.
    Can anyone help?
Anyone else having the same problem?

    Hard to say.
Do you sync your contacts from a mail account or possibly iCloud? If so, would it be possible you're sharing an iCloud account with anyone?

  • Contact picture vanished

Hi - newbie here!  Skype auto-updated to 7.3.0.101 today & the picture of my contact (yes, singular!) has been replaced with her name.  She can still see my picture.  I have "Show Profile Pictures" ticked but unless I drag the window to an unacceptably large size I can't see her any more.  It was fine yesterday.
I'm hoping this is the right place to ask for help & that someone has an idea of how I can fix this.
    Thanks for your attention.

Same problem, mine started this past Saturday, so i could see contact info. I turned off mobile me contact sync. Restarted mobile me contact sync this morning. Same problem. Contact name present, notes for contact present. Phone numbers and address are not. I shut off Mobile Me sync again for contacts, re-synced with I-tunes, all is good. All info does show up in me.com for contacts just pushes bad info to phone, I cant find anything in mobile me support. called apple care cant help, directed me to mobile me support, who is not available via chat or phone call.
    Anyone have any ideas??

  • Iphoto app and Contacts List vanished

    Dear Apple,
My iPhoto app and Contacts list have disappeared from both my desktop and my Time Machine ( recently restored my internal harddrive from external HD ).
    1)  Can I select just iPhoto for installation from the system disk ?
    2)  I can highlight my complete Contacts list from several weeks ago in Time Machine, but when restored to today, the desired target  ( Contacts ) is grayed out. Do I need to create a temporary "Contacts*" app to be later renamed without a distinctive character ? I have created "Contacts" folder, which is unrecognized by Mail.
    Any guidance would be appreciated.
    Thanks !
    Rob Glass

The iPhoto app needs to be reinstalled form its original source - either the restore disks that came with yoru computer, the pruchased iLife upgrade disks or the App store

  • File transfer using non-blocking sockets - data mysteriously  vanish

    Hello,
I need to pass some big amount of data using sockets. I my appliaction I have noticed that sometimes I didn't get all bytes. To check it out I wrote simple client + server to figure out what is happening. So:
    - I have a sender and receiver application
    - I'm trying to transfer 5MB text file.
    - On receiver side, output file is never larget than 3MB
    - If I put some timeout on sender side (1ms timeout between write operations) everything works fine.
Could someone tell me what I do wrong? Why data disappears and when? The same file transfered using old sockets goes always fine...
    Thanks in advance!

There are at least two problems here.
    A. In the receiver you should test for -1 from the read() immediately, rather than continue with the loop and try to write -1 bytes to the file.
    B. In the sender you are ignoring the return value of client.write(), which can be anything from 0 to the buffer length. If you get 0 you should wait for another OP_WRITE to trigger; if you get a 'short write' you need to retry it until you've got nothing left to write from the current buffer, before you read any more data. This is where the data is vanishing.

  • Contacts have vanished

My wife has an iPhone 4S, which she has never synced to a computer, nor to iCloud. She was at a high school play last night and texted her sister to see where she was sitting. Then she turned off the ringer and put it in her purse. When the play was over she got a text and noticed it was just the number, and didn't have a name with it. Then she discovered all her contacts were missing. Today, she noticed the battery was dying extremely quickly and she's started getting strange texts from people she doesn't know.
I synced it to my computer to create a backup, but the contacts seem to be gone forever.
I'm concerned about the strange texts and the quick battery consumption. Is there some way her phone could have been hacked? I've heard of an old SMS hack. It just seems like too much of a coincidence that she would suddenly get texts from a couple of different numbers that she definitely does not know right after the strange disappearance of all her contacts.

Same thing just happened to me on the same phone!  Someone please help us!!!

Hi, I've iPhone 5. All of a sudden all my contact names are removed from the address book. even though i can see all the numbers with no names associated with it. This came from nowhere. Please help ASAP

The problem is originated from apple itself and should be resolved by apple as well. Is it too much to ask?
I would like to try and put into perspective this statement you've made about 'Apple'., Your contacts were at a point in time on your 'Apple' iphone. That is a given as you would not now be asking about why they have disappeared. To say that at a given point and time they were there and now they are not and THEN to blame apple for this inconsistency is for me at least just a bit much.
So now after me expressing my opinion on your comments lets see if we can't put together some trouble shooting to see if we can't get to your contacts.
IF your contacts were saved to icloud they are still in the icloud only gone from your device. Please read this article about how to use icloud and how to get icloud to send your contacts back to your phone in which they once resided.

Please read this article about how to use icloud when storing contacts.
    Good luck, Friend.
