Contacts on iphone 4 arbitrarily duplicating?

For some reason my iphone 4 is arbitrarily duplicating some contacts
The duplicates are there but have no information inside.
I am syncing contacts with an ipad and several macs and there are no duplicates on any of them, just the iphone 4.
I tried deleting them and they came back
I deleted all contacts and then synced up from mobile me and the iphone duplicated them again.
There are 3-6 duplicates of nearly 20% of all contacts?
What gives? What can I do?
thanks in advance

But then, the contacts from the mac were still there which seems odd to me but, when I unchecked the sync box in itunes I was able to remove contacts there too.
Because of the following which was included with one of my previous posts.
+Syncing contacts direct with the Address Book on your Mac are stored completely separate from the contacts synced over the air with your MM account on your iPhone, which aren't stored locally on your iPhone.+
Contacts synced direct with the Address Book on your Mac via the iTunes sync process are stored locally on your iPhone. Contacts synced over the air with your MobileMe account on your iPhone are not stored locally on your iPhone.
When turning contacts off for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account on your iPhone, the contacts synced over the air are removed from your iPhone since contact with the MobileMe server where these contacts are stored is no longer available. This does not remove the contacts synced direct with the Address Book on your Mac which are stored locally on your iPhone and separate from the contacts synced over the air.
This option is for those accessing a company Exchange account on their iPhone and syncing their company contacts over the air with the Exchange account who also want to sync personal contacts direct with a supported address book application on their personal computer at home. When doing so, you can view business and personal contacts combined or separately with each synced and available separately on the iPhone. The personal contacts synced direct with a supported address book application on the personal computer at home via the Tunes sync process are stored locally on the iPhone and the business contacts synced over the air with the Exchange server are not stored locally on the iPhone. When turning contacts off for over the air syncing or when deleting the Exchange account from the iPhone, communication with the Exchange server for contacts is no longer available so these contacts will no longer be available on the iPhone, but this does not affect the contacts synced direct with the supported address book application on the personal computer at home via the iTunes sync process which are stored locally and completely separate from the Exchange contacts.
The same applies when syncing contacts over the air with a MobileMe account when syncing contacts direct with the Address Book on your Mac via the iTunes sync process.

I have 2 iphones registered under same account, but both phones had different contacts in them, somehow icloud duplicated, exchanged them, and I turned off the icloud on one of them, while doing that it asked me if I want to keep them on my phone or not. I pressed the one saying not to keep them. I deleted all of them and could not restore the contacts, how do I restore it? when I sign in to my icloud account online it only shows the contacts that were on the other phone. plz help

I access a personal iPhone and iPad, and a business iPhone with the same Apple ID.
The iPhone's passcode lock feature is completely separate from another iPhone or iOS device.
All apps, all paid and free apps include DRM protection which is tied to the Apple ID that was used to download the apps. If some apps were downloaded with one Apple ID and then a new Apple ID is created, in order to download an app update that was installed with the original Apple ID requires using that Apple ID and password.

Check that you don't have more than one account in your contacts, such as 'iCloud' and 'On My Phone'.

  • How to delete contacts from iPhone and update changes to PC after synch?

I spend a lot of time deleting old/unwanted/duplicated contacts on iPhone. Then I synch with PC through iTunes and I get two options: 1. MERGE or 2. Replace contacts on iPhone with PC information. If I click MERGE then all those contacts I deleted come back to my iPhone. MERGE seems to be a merely 'collapse' information feature...whether is from PC to iPhone or viceversa.
Obviously I don't want to replace my iPhone contacts with those in PC, because then I will loose all those pictures I took to my contacts...also, all the time spent assigning pictures to contacts will go to trash can.
This is kind of irritating...am I the only one having this problem? Active Synch for SmartPhones or Pocket PC nailed this down beautifully (it knows where the latest/most updated information happened and keeps that one).
    Help please.

Thank you for trying to help.
I don't want to replace the information on my iPhone because in my iPhone where i have the most updated information (pictures assigned to contacts and deleted duplicated/unwanted contacts)...I would like to replace the contacts on my PC instead.
After doing what you are suggesting will I be able to replace information on my PC? Is this what you mean?
    Thank you.

  • Address Book/Contacts/Google/iPhone Sync = Tons of Duplicates?

Hi, folks - I'm syncing my contacts with Google, using the following:
    1. iPhone: Google Sync for Calendars & Contacts using Microsoft Exchange
    2. Macbook: Address Book also syncing to Google under Preferences.
This setup is creating tons of duplicate contacts each day. It's usually the same handful of contacts that get duplicated dozens and dozens of times throughout the day, bloating my few hundred contacts into thousands of entries.
I'm guessing that the set-up below is creating some kind of infinite loop for certain items, and doubles them every time it tries to sync. But I can't find any common characteristics for the items that keep duplicating.
I'm sure the easiest fix would be to turn off option 2, and stop trying to keep my Macbook's local contact list in sync. But that's my way of "backing up" incase my Google account ever gets hosed for any reason.
    Does anybody know:
    1. How I can fix my set-up above to stop the dupe-loop, OR
    2. How to troubleshoot each contact that's duping, fix fields/data etc OR
    3. A better way to auto-backup Google so I don't have to use Option 2 at all?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Have the same problem.
Today, as usual did a sync and was very pleased to find that almost all my contacts on IPhone were duplicated. Weird, not all of them.
The problem is that I have to double check every contact, because the duplication was a bit...weird also. Not all duplicates are the same. One might contain all info about a contact and another one might have only one phone number.
So, this is a BIG problem.
I tried deleting all contacts from my Outlook database and sync.
Oh, the joy of having all your IPhone contacts DELETED without even a warning.
Restored a backup and got all my Contacts back, duplicated of course.
Believe me, I am DEAD AFRAID of using ITunes again. Maybe for the ones that did the programing of it might have some logic, but for me, as well as for many Apple customers with the same problem (and more) I think NOT.
This piece of software must have been written on some crazy after party weekend, because I cannot understand how such a big name like Apple can release such a badly written application.
Do we have an alternative to ITunes?
I am using it for backing up my contacts, because I tend to loose my phone all the time
I would use it for purchasing some interesting software from the store, but, most of the software I like...are not in my country's store :)) (Google Earth, The Discovery software, etc). Way to go!
I do remember Nokia and their little application. So easy to do anything. Apple, weak up!!!

  • Syncing contacts from iPhone back to iMac (Entourage)

Briefly, after both my Time Machine and hard drive failed, I lost all my data. My Entourage contacts re-main on my iPhone, and I want to sync them back to Entourage. I understand the process of "merging,"but I have run into a few obstacles: I am using the latest version of iTunes (7.6.2), by the way. First, under Preferences, I have no options available under "Syncing." Then, when I connect my iPhone, and select "Info," I have no options here, either. I do have a number of contacts in Entourage in my iMac, but, apparently, iTunes no longer recognizes the existence of this program, so I can go no-
where. (My Entourage Contacts have been duplicated in my Address Book, but that doesn't show up, either. Something must be terribly corrupted.) I'm both frustrated and perplexed, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance. pah

Something to check when syncing contacts from iphone back to computer, make sure to open address book and enter at least one contact.
Then when you connect the iphone, you should get a message asking if you want to merge the data.
Click merge and this should copy all contacts from the iphone back into address book.
the same goes with ical also.
Make sure there is at least one event in ical.
Now to move the data in address book and ical to entourage is set in the entourage preferences in the sync services section.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I stop my iPhone 4 from duplicating recurring events?

Recently, my iPhone 4 started duplicating all my recurring calendar events (though they only show up in my Outlook as a single event on a particular day, they show up twice on a particular day on my iPhone calendar . . . one has a purple dot next to it, the other has an orange dot). I sync with Outlook 2007, and don't use MobileMe, iCal or any other Mac utilities to sync with my phone. I can't seem to find anything that resolves this issue for someone who simply syncs with MS exchange server. Please help. It's very annoying. (FYI: I do NOT have "Sync Contacts," "Sync Calendars" or "Sync Mail Accounts" checked under the info tab of my device in iTunes)

Do you have VoiceOver or Speak Selection on?

How do you delete all contacts on iPhone 4S? I have tried to sync and end up w/duplicates and now triplicates. 4,000 contacts have now turned into 12,000 contacts!! I "upgraded" to Lion and hate it - it was so much easier before. I managed to delete on MacBook (to start from scratch there), but cannot delete from iphone or ipad. I am so frustrated! Please help

Hi Cynthia!  If you are syncing from something like Gmail you can go into the iPhones Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>(account you are syncing)> and turn off contacts. It will ask you if you want to delete them from your phone - just click delete.  Exit Settings and turn phone off by power button (not all the way OFF).  Then re-open Settings>mail, Contacts, Calendars>(account you are syncing)> and turn Contacts back on - This is where you need to be careful - When you turn contacts back on you will be prompted to delete or save the contacts already on your phone. CLICK DELETE.  You should now have only your synced contacts on your phone!  Hope it helps!

  • How can I organize contacts in iphone into categories?, How can I organize contacts in iphone into categories?

How can I organize contacts in iphone into categories? I have over 4000 contacts and need to organize them as clients, personal, etc. I used to be able to do this in Blackberry but have not found a way to do it with the iPhone.

I don't think that function is possible with IOS.   The only thing I see is you can put the company that the contact is with for clients.
there maybe an app that can do that, try doing a search.

  • Dilemma: How Can I Transfer My iPhone 3G Contacts to iPhone 5 or iPhone 4 If iTunes Won't Sync It?

Hi. The iPhone 3G has 4.2.1 which iCloud doesn't support. It means my Contacts on the iPhone 3G can't be synced to my iMac because Mountain Lion gets the updated Contacts from iCloud. If I'll buy the iPhone 5 (assuming it great beyond expectations. Almost 4 years with iPhone 3G is great- very durable even if it's made in China; it's the designer that counts when it comes to quality I guess for the most part) or future iPhones I won't be able to transfer all the data, the Contacts especially to iPhone 5 or later? (even If use apps like iPhone Explorer which doesn't actually see the Contacts in the iPhone 3G but if even if it did it still won't be compatible with iTunes to transfer the Contact to iPhone 5).
What could be a solution. Should install onto an USB external drive an earlier OS that has an iTunes that'll work with iOS 4.2.1 so I can primarily backup Contacts? If that's a solution, what OS would that be and what iTunes version?
    Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

I would sign out again, then update your Mac (latest version, not 10.7.3 as shown in your signature), open "Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and then choose iCloud and sign in again. I would also do the same on your iOS device (sign out and in). Make sure to confirm the message when you will be asked to merge the contacts with iCloud.

You have to follow the process outlined here to recover contacts from an iCloud backup: Recovering deleted iCloud contacts from an iCloud backup..  Otherwise, as you have noticed, the recovered contacts are overwritten when your device reconnects to iCloud.

  • HT4528 I have 3 iPhones, one Ipad, and two PC's that I have tried to "connect" using one iTunes account and am having issues.I connected iPhone #3 to one PC, it removed all contacts from iPhone #3, replaced w/ contacts from iPhone #2. How can I get back?

I have 3 iPhones, one iPad and 2 PC's, all using the same iTunes account.  I want to be able to have each iPhone keep their own list of accounts and music list and the I pad different as well.  I want to 2 PC's music list to match.  How do I do this?
Additionally, when I connected iPhone #3 to one PC, it removed the contacts from #3 and replaced it with contacts from iPhone #2.  How do I get those contacts back and prevent this from happening again?

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    or here:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

When I sync recently bought albums to my iPhone I get duplicated tracks.  How can I resolve this.  The duplicated tracks do not appear in my itunes library, just on my iPhone.

It seems to happen with songs that were purchased before synchronizing the new iPhone
I will tell you how I fixed it.
Note: I have iTunes in spanish so I will try to translate and figure out the commands that appear on ITunes in english. I will put my translations into brackets. English is not my native language. I will do my best.
    The workaround is:
1.- Dragg no working songs from iTunes to a folder on the hard disk. (Only for backup purposes)
2.- Deleted those songs from iTunes library.
3.- On the left panel in ITunes click on "Purchased" under the STORE option. All your purchased songs will appear on the right panel
4.- At the bottom and right there is the option : "Download Previous Purchases". Click there.
5.- Click on the option "Are not in my Library" (top right)
6.- The songs you deleted from iTunes will appear.
7.- Downloaded them again. (You have the option to download at the bottom right)
8.- Syncronize your iPhone and that's all.

  • How to delete multiple contacts in iphone 5s

Is there an easy way to delet multiple contacts on iphone 5s annd 5c. I can delete them one at a time, but wondered if theres a way to do some of them but not all.

No, there's no mass delete or partial mass delete option.
If these are iCloud based contacts, you may find it easier to go to www.icloud.com and delete them there.
