Contacts Server Super Slow or is it just me?
I just wanted to know if the slow performance of Contacts/Address Book and Contacts server (in Mountain Lion Server) is normal. Mind you I am coming from Marketcircle Daylite, but we're trying to leave it due to cost.
The communication between local Contact/Address Book apps on our office computers and the server just seem abnormally slow to the point of not being efficient to use. We're testing moving contacts from Daylite to Contacts server. Yikes even for barely over 100 contacts the import is slow, the updating on local computers slow. We have over nine thousand contacts.
Here's our setup:
MacMini Server / 2 GHz Intel Core i7/ 8GB Ram
Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2
Setup fake user "sharedcontacts" on server strictly for contacts
User computers all have access to same "sharedcontacts" account via username and password for "sharedcontacts" user account
LAN is gigabit ethernet, business class netgear switch connecting Mac Pros, iMacs, Mac Mini's - 12 computers total, only 5 computers connected to shared contacts.
Other things I don't get:
I can only import the contacts to the server side "sharedcontacts" user account using my local Contacts application. I don't know how to access the actual user contacts on the server itself since I can't open Contacts.app on the server and see them because they're not part of the local user admin account.
I'm not sure how to use/ why there's a directory header on the left side in my Contacts.app application. I can already see the shared contacts for "sharedcontacts" account. Then below is the directory header. Not sure what to do with that and if that could improve performance. Allowing the serach on directory is enabled on Contacts server.
How do I ensure that (for one computer - my boss's) the contacts stay on his computer even when he's disconnected from our local network? He needs these server-based contacts available all of the time.
Any insight would help.

I updated to Yosemite and everything worked great for a few days until earlier. My mac was plugged to my TV via HDMI wen everything hanged. I did a hard reset and the screen was just black during startup. There were the startup sounds but no images from the screen. it did have images at one point where it gave me options to reset my password. I did a couple of hard reboots and pressed Alt/Option or Cmd+Option+P+R based on previous posts. Didnt know which w but I was able to access my account and log in. My big problem right now is that my Mac became super slow. Even at the simple commands/clicks
My mac was okay up until a few hours ago. If anyone knows how to fix this, would really appreciate your help. Thank you!

I just updated my iPad an now it is super slow, I lost all my music, and it keeps stopping whatever I was currently doing an goes back the the home screen. what is u, and how do I fix it?
There are a few things that you could try for the apps abending. First try closing all apps via the taskbar and then see if they work ok when you re-open them : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A second option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If you have iCloud enabled on the iPad in Settings > iCloud then turning it off might also help (but see if the above two things help first).
In terms of your music, is it not on your computer's iTunes ? Music isn't included in a backup so for the update/restore process to be able to copy it back to your iPad it needs it be on the computer's iTunes that you used to update via. If they are iTunes purchased music and you don't have them on your computer or on a backup, then depending upon which country that you are in you might be able to re-download them from the store : re-downloading. -
Just upgraded to Lion now iMac runs super slow.
Things were running just fine now everything from the internet to iPhoto is running super slow. It hangs for about 10 seconds then moves on. Any thoughts on what I can check to clean up performance?

AndyYou should look at the Activity Monitor (located in /Applications/Utilities) to see what applications and processes are using up your Mac's resources.

Super Slow Internet Browsing with Airport or LAN and networking activities.
The people at AppleCare are awesome and way polite. But I am a new Mac user and still in my 90 day apple care plan and have not been able to convince anyone that my internet connection on my MacBook is Super Slow. I have quantified it (350k - 550k download and 150k - 250k upload depending on my location), whereas at work right next to my older PC (which I am still using to go on line with since it is more like 3-5mb download) and my Desk Top PC and My Laptop PC are both more than three times faster for internet browsing and network transfers. The Airport on my MacBook seems to be faster than using the Ethernet cable (which I find weird), but they are both more than three times slower than my PC's no matter where I am working.
Which brings me to my next issue, simply changing channels on the router is not the solution because while I can do that on my router at home or at my office. I can not walk into Starbucks or into the school library or my friends houses and ask them all to "fix" their routers for me. These MacBooks need to get fixed.
This is frustrating and I am still waiting for a real solution.

P.S. - I'm beginning to resent buying my MacBook ProI can post the info you request below, but as I said before, my connection is not dropping, and the problem is not only with Airport. I have an old PC running a 56K modem at home that is faster than my MBP whether I am using Airport or if I connect through my LAN...

Two days ago i was downloading at normal (cable modem) speeds as i have been for the last year, now my itunes downloads are super slow (20 minutes per song and hours for tv episodes). When i try to play a sample of a song it keeps trying to reconnect me (network stalled , rebuffering system) over and over. I am getting data but at an extremely slow rate. whats the deal?

501 0D error, and My macbook pro sudennly super slow.

I´ve got the Macbook pro 13, mid 2012. Suddenly it became super slow. Out of nowhere I swear.
I tried resetting SMC, Pram.
I tried to AHT - and got the 501 0D error.
I tried to reinstall OS X Mavericks - It took me almost 16 hours.
I checked disk utility and repair it, repair permission.
And it is still super slow. Boot up time is long. System is very slow. And I see a lot of beach ball.
What do you think it could be?If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostictest. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary in case your startup drive is failing.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out.
If possible, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. Lion is super slow! Should I reinstall?
Hi,
I have a 13” MacBook Pro that has a 2.7GHz i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. I bought this June at it came pre-installed with OS X Snow Leopard. In July, I upgraded to Lion and initially, my computer just had the spinning beach ball a lot more, but a day or two later, my computer seemed like it was running as normal (I’m assuming this was due to Spotlight indexing everything).
However, of late I’ve noticed my computer is SUPER slow! I first noticed the lag in processing speed when it took five minutes to transfer 1GB to a USB flash drive. (I then transferred the files to a Windows PC and back onto the same flash drive and the entire process occurred in under a minute).It takes over two minutes to start up and anywhere between ten seconds to a minute to open a regular application (i.e. iTunes, iPhoto, Firefox, etc). And my laptop heats up a lot faster these days too!
I’ve looked around the discussion forum and tried all the suggested solutions i.e. resetting the PRAM and the SMC, verifying and repairing the disk/permissions (including the one where you have to go through the recovery partition). But nothing has helped. If anything, it's getting worse! Every time I open disk utility now it says it’ll take 4 hours to verify the disk permissions! AHHH. And it’s not like my laptop is filled with useless files, either; my hard drive capacity is 500GB and it still has 372.7GB available. Oh, and I don’t have a virus either because I’ve run the Sophos anti-virus scan three times.
Normally, I’d have taken my laptop to the Apple Store and asked them to figure it out, but I’m currently in the Philippines and they only have Apple Resellers and fake Apple Stores here. I realise it sounds ridiculous but I’m deathly afraid they are either going to kill my MBP altogether or steal my parts.
I was wondering should I completely re-install Lion? If so, how exactly would I go about doing that? I do have a Time Machine back-up of everything on my 1TB external drive, but I don’t have any back-ups prior to getting Lion because I purchased my external later. Also, if I were to re-install Lion and restore from my Time Machine back-up would all my applications still work? I have Microsoft Office 201, Adobe Pro, Photoshop, etc. and if they get uninstalled, I don’t have any of my installation CDs here!

Thank you!Try to find out what is causing the loss of performance by starting the "Activity Monitor" (from Applications -> Utilities) and sort the processes according to real memory usage or CPU time by clicking at the column headers.
Also have a look at the free Disk space.
According to Apple the minimum hardware requirements for Lion are 2GB of RAM, but I found that not to be sufficient with the Applications I like to be running at the same time. For my workflow I needed 4 GB RAM when on SL, and with Lion I needed 8GB of RAM. The Activity monitor will tell you if you need to upgrade your RAM.
The second bottleneck with Lion is free disk space. Lion will run much more smoothly if you keep a least 10% (and a minimum of 20 GB) of your disk free.
If you find that you do need more RAM, but don't want to upgrade right now, look at the "Activity monitor" to find out which of your processes are fighting for memory and try to avoid running those together at the same time. I found that quite often Safari was eating the available memory and quitting Safari when I did not really need it did help a lot.

Since then the laptop has been practically unusable particularily when it comes to safari, it is either really slow getting to a particular page or just doesnt do anything, no matter how long you wait. Restarting doesnt seem to help, reload view fails as well. Its strange as sometimes its ok for 10 minutes then starts doing this. I know this is bad but I have never backed the laptop up so cant restore to previous version. I am currently looking into which external hard drive to buy so I can start doing regular back ups. I have run EtreCheck in the hope somebody can help!! Results below

Wireless on My New MBP super slow
Hi everyone, I just bought a shiny new 15" Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, love it except my wireless is super slow when using it on my home network. I know I'm not the first to complain of this and that there are plenty of other threads about it, but I've tried some of the solutions on those thread to no avail. So I'm starting my own, can someone please help, I'm dangerously close to doing something irrational to my MBP. Ok here's a breakdown of my problem:
-I'm using a Belkin pre N1 router.
-I pay for 10mbs but I'm getting .5mbs using Airport but if I plug in the ethernet I achieve around 9mbs
-Airport shows a full signal
-My old IMac runs like a stallion on my network using Airport, so does my roommates Vista machine both getting around 8.5mbs
-I've made sure my IMac's and Macbook Pro settings are the same
-I've tried using an open dns, didn't work
-I've change my router from using a WEP to using a WPA, didn't work
-I've tried changing the broadcast signal from 11N/G to just 11N to 11N/G/B to 11G/B to 11B back to 11N/G, when I broadcasted just N wireless speed jump all the way up to 8mbs hooraay!!! until I quit safari and opened it again wireless speed went back to .5mps
-I've tried using every wireless channel 1-11 plus Auto, Again wireless speed jump all the way up to 8mbs hooraay!!! until I quit safari and opened it again wireless speed went back to .5mps
-I've tried doing a special little dance in front of it, didn't work except to make me ready to drop it like its hot this Saturday!!!
Nothing seems to work. I'm making a Apple genus appointment tomorrow but I have a sneaky feeling that it will be fine on their network and they'll tell me it's belkins problem. Which could be the case but why would my IMac and Vista computers work flawless and not my new MacBook. Please, please, please help. Theres plenty of praise for whomever can solve my problem and I can praise like no other. Thanks

I've tried all the previous "fixes" I could find -- wipe and re-install, delete and replace AirPort entry in Network panel, new Location in Network panel, and so on. This is pretty bad... I haven't tried different DNS yet, but I don't see why the DNS should make any difference when my Mac Pro and the old Macbook seem fine with the servers from my ISP.

My 13" MBP MD 101 / A1278 / 9,2 / Mid 2012 is still in production and it is performing like a windows pc; super slow after updating it to Yosemite.I can't afford to upgrade its HDD to SSD and 4GB RAM to 16GB.
Tried everything found on internet, nothing got successful in making it fast as it was once with mountain lion. I hope I could have Yosemite's features and leopard's responsiveness and stability.
I think Apple guys have designed Yosemite only for SSDs only. They should design OS X according to every mac's different hardware, like if I have a spinning old hard drive it should mould itself to the capabilities of it and not demand responsiveness of an SSD.
Please do let me know if anyone have brilliant new idea other than found on the internet.

Brand new iMac: super slow web browsing
Brand new iMac is super slow while browsing the web.
We have cable internet, and the iMac is connected via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. We have a Windows machine connected to the same router.
The Windows machine loads web pages extremely quickly, the iMac takes 20 seconds to a minute to load anything.
Clearly there is a settings problem on the iMac. No idea what.
It isn't the router.
It isn't the broadband connection.
It isn't the DNS server.
Please help!I'm not sure if you understood my original post, however, I will re-iterate it here.
I have several machines connected to the same network.
MacBook Pro
Windows machine
iMac.
Only the iMac exhibits any problems.
Clearly, the ISP is not the issue. The iMac is connected via Ethernet to the same router as the PC.
Clearly the Mac is the problem.
Changing DNS server has no effect. -
My iphone 3 has just started running super slow all of the time. Also about the same time while on a call my screen is freezing black and I am unable to hang up with the caller. It is driving me crazy!!!!
try hard reset ( hold the sleep and home button together for a few second the iphone will restart and then the an apple logo will appear)

I've been using Thunderbird as an IMAP client for Gmail for about 2 years without any problems. Three days ago I saw for the first time the following message at startup: "Unable to load address book file abook-9.mab. It may be read-only, or locked by another application. Please try again later." Subsequent restarts produced the same message, except the abook number would change to abook-12, abook-10, abook-7, etc. Eventually I gave up and continued using Thunderbird. Performance was suddenly super slow. When I tried to move a message from the Inbox to a folder, the message didn't move; I tried twice more, nothing. So I went to look at the folder, and I got the dreaded message (I'm sorry I don't recall the exact wording) "Unable to access local folder [folder] - [something other possible reason] or your hard drive may be full". But if I would just leave this folder selected, eventually the contents would appear. I tried downloading all my folders for offline use, but after an hour or so they all disappeared. Fortunately, I didn't panic; a few minutes later, they started appearing again. The folders were still present in my local directory, but their contents were all gone: The size of my Mail directory went from 3.85 GB to 107 MB and never fully recovered.
So I went online and started searching. I deleted all the .msf files. Same behavior. I deleted the SystemConfiguration folder on my MacBook. Same behavior. I restored my Profiles and Mail directories with their backups from the day before the trouble started. Same behavior.
And just as I was about to start screaming, I restored the Profiles and Mail directories with their backups from 2 weeks before the trouble started. So far things appear to be going well.
I looked at bug 495911 and bug 893786, but I had already tried most of the things people suggested, so I decided to open a new question. One thing that caught my eye is the recommendation to replace the potentially corrupted file 'panacea.dat' with an earlier version. Is it possible that the 'panacea.dat' file from the day before the problem started was already corrupted and that's why I had to go back to 2 weeks before?
Fortunately, none of the folders or messages were deleted on my online Gmail account (as far as I can tell), but this has definitely been a very frustrating experience...Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.
