Contacts show up as "1" in address book

So this is such a messed up problem that the Apple Store, Zimbra Mail, & Microsoft Exchange support teams couldn't answer, nor find any other cases of it happening. I'll explain it as clearly as I can and then get into soft/hardware specs.
I have two mail accounts on my iPhone and iPad 2: my Gmail account and my Outlook Exchange account. The problem does not exist for anyone else in my company, and a lot of people have the exact same setup I do as well. If I am sending an email to an email address that I have not ever emailed before, manually type it in, and send, that email address is automatically added to my iPhone & iPad contact lists as the number "1". These mysterious contacts continue to grow, leaving me with "1's" throughout my contact list. The same thing happens if someone new emails me. If that person has not emailed me before and I reply to their email, the contact too is added as a "1". Lastly, the issue also happens if I send an email from my iPhone or iPad to a "new" contact; they too are added to the list of "1's".
These "new" contacts do not show up as "1's" within Outlook, Outlook Web, Zimbra, or Zimbra Desktop; they show up only as email addresses. Also, these "new" contacts are not being added to my gmail contact list either.
To better illustrate this, here are screen shots of this in action.
Image 1: This is an email I received from tech support over at Voxel. The tech copied another "new" email address to the chain he had established with me. (Note: His contact had already been changed to a "1")
Image 2: This is a shot of the contact details when I tapped on the "1" in that email.
Image 3: I replied all to his email with the new address being added to the conversation. As soon as I hit send, that new address that was now part of the email chain was auto-added to my contact list as a "1".
Image 4: This is the contact details as they can be seen AFTER replying to him via email. Prior to me replying, his contact information only showed up as an email address. (see Image 1)
So there you have it. Great mystery that is quite annoying to say the least.
Here are all the details that I can think of giving you.
Devices:
- iPhone 4 running iOS5.0 (9A334) [please note that the issue had been going on since May, back when I was running 4.3]
- iPad 2 running iOS5.0 (9A334)
- HP Envy running Windows 7 64-bit (primary machine used to sync)
- Dell Latitude E6510 Windows 7 32-bit (work computer running Outlook & Zimbra)
Other
- Running Outlook 2010
- Gmail & exchance email addresses are both on iPad & iPhone

I have  exactly the same problem.
I am using iOS 7 and Zimbra 8 using Active Sync protocol.

How can I use apple mail (linked to gmail) and get it to only do autofill on the contacts that I have in apple address book? Everytime I write an email on the Apple mail app (as well as in Gmail) it recommends a bunch of emails that are not my contacts. I want it to just autofill for the contacts that I have in my address book. Is this possible? Thank you. I have an Imac Intel version and an Iphone 5 phone.

  • Cannot transfer contacts from iPhone 3GS to Mac Address book

    Hi there
I've been searching for an answer all over these forums and google, but to no avail.
I'm using a 3GS and I'm on Snow Leopard on the mac.
I have tried resetting the sync utility settings and all other tweaks with the phone and the iTunes panels, but I simply cant add any of the numbers that I have added to my phone on to the mac address book. The contacts are transferred to iCloud though. But there is no way to export the iCloud contacts over to the mac address book either. I have to now manually search for all the new contacts I've added (which is a project in itself) and retype it in the mac address book. Pretty ridiculous!!!!!
Is there a fix for this or is Apple wanting everyone to buy Lion to use the dektop version of iCloud.
    Please let me know
    Thanks
    Best regards

    Hi guys
    Managed to find the solution
    1) On the iPhone go to settings > iCloud > Switch off contacts. (Keep contacts on phone)
    2) Then on the mac go to address book and make an archive of your contacts just in case something goes wrong. You can do this by going to File > Export > Create an archive.
    3) Then delete all the contacts and groups from your mac address book.
    4) Then go to iTunes and backup by right clicking on the iPhone on the sidbar.
    5) Sync
Your contacts from the phone should repopluate the mac address book
Hope that helps. It worked for me

  • How to move contacts from iphone to mac's Address book WITHOUT DELETING?

I want to move contacts from my iPhone to the address book in the computer. I'm scared about it deleting contacts in my iPhone instead as I've heard horror stories. Syncing is so freaking confusing???

    So far playing around with it back and forth. My understanding is the following;
    1. Add on iPhone / Sync / Adds to Address Book
    2. Delete on iPhone / Sync / Deletes from Address Book
    3. Add in Addres Book / Sync / Does not add to iphone (with no regards to Advanced option in iTunes)
    4. Delete in Address Book / Sync / Deletes on iPhone (with no regards to Advanced option in iTunes)

  • Retrieving contacts from an ipod or Earthlink address book

My hard drive melted down and I mistakenly thought I had backed some things I actually hadn't. How is it possible to retrieve my contacts from my 80G ipod? From my Earthlink address book?

Thanks for the reply Julian, but I tried that and the only cards that show up in that "contacts" folder are the ones that come with the iPod: ipodcreatedsample.vcf and 2 others.
I brought this to the genius bar at my local Apple store, and they couldn't figure out how to do it, so this one is definitely a challenge. The genius bar advice was: "try to find a solution online." Aaack.

  • Some Contact FILEs cannot be opened in Address Book

Here "Contact Files" indicates the .abcdp files exsiting under:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata/
I have not noticed this before so that I am not sure whether this is specific to Snow Leopard.
There are some contact FILES that, though can be searched by Spotlight and showed in Quick Look, can NOT be opened by Address Book.
After I double clicked one of such contacts, Address Book is activated as normal: no warning message was shown and no abnormal system behavior.
Has everybody experienced the same problem or been aware of the cause/solution?
    Thanks!
btw, I can share such files if you ask.

  • Contacts don't accurately sync with Address Book

The contacts information on my iPod Touch don't totally match with the information in my Address Book on my iMac with Snow Leopard. I just totally Restored my iPod and reloaded everything from my iMac. Most of the contacts came over but not all. I'm missing a couple of groups and some individual entries. In a few cases, there are entries which I remember used to be there but they were previously deleted. They are not now in my Address Book but they did show up in the Contacts. It's like the sync dug back to an older version of the Address Book. Does anyone have any clues or hints?
BTW this is my first use of the Support Communities so please forgive any goofs.

Just to wrap this one up. After a couple of long sessions with Apple support we fixed it by exporting the Address Book and then importing the card images. I lost all my groups, but when I reassembled everything manually the problem was resolved. It appears that something was corrupted in the data. Some of this data came originally from my Palm Pilot and has been passed along through the years as a part of my conversion from Windows to Apple so any number of gremlins could have crept in. All looks fine now and I'm happily exploring my new iPad. I want to give special cudos to Marsha who stuck with me and finally got this squared away.

  • New iphone contacts don't sync to my address book

IF I add a contact to my phone (exp - Living Social) then sync my phone to my computer, the Living Social contact does not show up on my computer in my address book....

    Hey,
I also have this problem - do you have any solution?
I have the most up to the date verion of system on my iphone and of itunes.
I had just tried to sync my contacts from phone to windows contacts, process was quick and uniterrupted. when I unplugged iphone from pc I checked windows contacs file and part of the contacts indeed was copied. But that were only those that were in the SIM card. All of those that I added manually on iphone is not copied onto the computer.
    What can I do?

  • New contacts don't import to Windows Address Book groups

I'm using Windows Address Book(WAB) as my contacts list on my laptop when I sync with the iPhone. I use WAB because it uses Groups and iPhone accepts it.
Today I was browsing through one of my groups on the iPhone and added a new contact, while I was still in the group (Business). I just synced my iPhone and the contact didn't download onto my laptop! Its still on my iPhone and it shows up both in "Business" as well as "All Contacts", but its nowhere to be found on my computer after the sync.
The first time I synced the iPhone, it was with my everyday settings: under Info -> Contacts -> All Contacts is checked.
I tried syncing a second time; however, instead of checking "All Contacts", I selected each group individually such that I'm syncing all my contacts. And this time it worked! I was able to import the new contact into WAB.
Weird! Any ideas why it would sync properly with method 2 but not with method 1?

    BigT,
Contacts created on the iPhone should sync back to WAB using either method (using all contacts or selected groups). One feature that using "selected groups" provides is it lets you specify what group to sync contacts created on the iPhone back into in WAB.
If you notice this happening again, you may want to reset your Sync History. To reset sync history:
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
    3. Click the iPhone tab.
    4. Click the Reset Sync History button.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • How are contact photos in Mac Mail and Address book used?

I am trying to understand who will see my photo (user account picture) that I can see in my contact listing from address book. Will other mac users see this photo when I email them? Will PC users see it? I think it showed up on my blackberry in an email I sent myself. Is that possible?

Nobody can see that picture but you. If you assign pictures to contacts, they will show up as a badge on e-mails from that contact.

  • Moving contacts from Outlook 2007 to Mac Address Book

    Hello all,
I've tried to email VCard attachments of contacts from an Outlook 2007 / Exchange Server account so I can import them into my MAC Address Book. When I look at my sent folder in Outlook, the attachment shows a VCF attachment. When I pick up the email on my MAC using Mail, the attachment always comes back as WinMail.dat which the Address Book doesn't recognize.
Furthermore, I've tried sending the VCard to a Yahoo email address and download the attachment. That worked fine.
Was wondering if someone could help me isolate where the issue may be. Thanks.

If Outlook Express provides for exporting contacts in vCard format, you can send all contacts as vCard attachments to a message sent to an email account you access with the Mail.app. Save the vCard attachments from the message to a created folder on the Desktop and then use the Address Book import feature selecting vCards.
If OE does not provide for exporting contacts in vCard format, it should provide for exporting contacts as a tab-delimited text file.
The Tiger Address Book includes a Text File import selection/option.

  • ISync erased my phone contacts, then it erased numbers in Address Book

Okay, long complicated story, hopefully made short:
    - after syncing my Motorola Razr phone via bluetooth with iSync, I noticed all my contacts were gone.
    - I tried syncing again, and there was no change
    - I tried removing all the files from ~library/Application Support/iSync and then tried syncing again.
    - Now, all the numbers that were previously stored in my phone, are now erased from address book, as well as erasing all events I had in iCal
    - I did a Time Machine backup last week, so I have a backup of the system when address book and ical were normal
    - I want to restore the numbers I lost both in address book, the events I had in iCal, and also get syncing back to normal.
Any ideas on how to do this would be gratefully appreciated. This is a rat's nest that I don't know how to untangle.

I have  exactly the same problem.
I am using iOS 7 and Zimbra 8 using Active Sync protocol.

  • How do I see a list of all my Apple Mail contacts. I do not use address book. I just want to see all the email addresses stored on my Mac

    Hi All,
I have been using Mail for the past three years without need to send a regular mailing list mailout.
I now need to send group emails and all I want to do is browse my contacts aquired over the last three years to create a list. I have not used Address Book for anything other than phone contacts so please do not point me in that dirrection.
There must be a list of all email contacts stored somewhere on the Mac that I can look through. It is an almost impossible task to do this by browsing my inbox/sent folders.
Hope you can help and thanks in advance!
