Contacts Sort Order

I have recently moved from a Windows Mobile 6.5 device to the iPhone 4 and am struggling with getting my contacts to work properly. (I am having the same issue on my iPad, so I assume it is an iOS issue that I don't fully understand).
On my computer, my contacts are all entered properly in the proper fields of First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, Suffix and so forth. In Outlook and Google Contacts, they all sort properly by Last Name, First Name.
When I sync across to the iPhone, they sort Last Name, First Name UNLESS there is an entry in the Suffix field, in which case it sorts Suffix, First Name!!!
I thought I was missing a bunch of contacts. For Example, all of my P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) contacts were filed under "P" on the handset instead of their last names.
How do I fix this? Short of deleting all of the Suffix fields, I can't seem to figure it out.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike:
Have you solved this problem? Mine is almost exactly the same.
I have a new iPhone 4. Using iTunes, I imported my Outlook Express contacts to the phone. Separately, I imported my Outlook Express contacts to Gmail.
Then I decided to utilize the Microsoft Exchange feature on the iphone to automatically sync my Gmail contacts to the phone.
It seems to have all worked correctly EXCEPT for the sorting function.
More specifically, the sorting function seems to work, but the contact first, middle and last names and suffix fields have been rearranged.
As a result, the sorting is wrong.
As you stated, my Gmail contacts all appear correct.
The problem started with the Microsoft Exchange feature. Previously, when my contacts were imported using iTunes, all the contact name fields were correct.
Do you have any suggestions?

  • E66: Configuring contact sort order when composing...

    Dear friends,
This is probably a silly issue but still, I can't find a solution... I have upgraded my aging Nokia E66 RM-343 to 400.21.013 (this version was suggested by the Nokia Suite and it keeps telling me that this is the latest version). After the upgrade and restoring the phone settings, I am having problems with the contacts sort order when choosing recipients for an SMS message.
I have configured the contact list for the "Last Name First Name" display order, and when making a voice call, the sort order is correct - the contacts are sorted by the last name. However, when writing an SMS message and choosing the recipients, the contact list is displayed in the "Last Name, First Name" mode but it is sorted by the first name which is extremely confusing and inconvenient.
I just do not seem to be able to find where the sort order for the contact list as displayed when composing an SMS message can be configured. Anyone have any suggestion/hint? Thank you very much in forward!
    Best regards,
    Peter

Unfortunately, the 6230i seems to have only one field for the contact name, so it has no way of knowing what is what. I guess the only thing you can do is reinput all the names manually.

  • Contacts sort order after updating to firmware 051...

I am just after updating my E52 with 051.018 Firmware. Before firmware update I done my contacts like this: 01 Val, 02 John, 03 Dad etc... so that when I selected contacts the numbers I most used/dialled come up at the top of the list but now after updating my firmware the contacts at the top of the list are those starting with A  - I have tried going into settings and choosing the order of first name last name but its still the same. I suppose a workaround would be to edit my contacts so that 01 Val becomes AA Val and 02 john becomes AB John but I would really like to keep them as before I updated the firmware if anyone knows a solution. Many thanks,
    Andy.

The problem was solved. It apparently had to do with DNS server settings. I subscribe to Unblock-US here in Canada, and that messed up communication between the Bravia and the Sony servers. I have my DNS settings set on the router level, so what I had to is to simply bypass the router settings by setting new DNS addresses on the Bravia itself. I used the Google DNS for the Bravia:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
Of course, with this configuration, I can no longer access US content on my Netflix on the Bravia television. What I find strange is that this was never a problem prior to the update, so I guess Sony is locking down on geoblocking with this latest update.

  • 160G Classic: sort order of contacts

    Yep,
I am just starting to discover the features of my brand new 160G Classic. I have noticed, that I can choose between first name or last name as the sort order for contacts. But it looks like the contacts are always displayed as firstname and than lastname.
What sense does it make if I sort all the contacts in order of their lastname, but it's their firstname which got displayed first?
Any idea's out there? Did I miss anything? Can anybody confirm that behaviour?
    Thx!

I tried to generated one vcf file for each contact rather than having one vcf file for all contacts. This helped me to work around some addressbook issues with my 4G iPod. But the Problem with my new Classic remains the same.
The list of contacts is still showing "Arthur Dent" rather than "Dent, Arthur" eventhough I have selected "sort in order of last name". This is ridiculous as it prevents efficient browseing of all contacts.
Any ideas, comments, hints or even solutions out there?

  • How to Control the Sorting Order of iPhone Contacts from Outlook?

In a series of editing steps we've loaded ca. 1,900 personal and business contacts from Outlook into a 1st gen iPhone with 2.0.1 software on it. To our surprise we found that while most of the entries were listed and sorted by company, certain entries were listed and sorted by the person's name. It looked random and there didn't seem to be any way to control it on the iPhone.
While troubleshooting the problem we synced up the iPhone with an empty Address Book on a MacBook Pro and found that the sort order flag was indeed set differently on these entries. When we changed the sorting flag of a contact in the Mac's Address Book to "Company" it also changed on the iPhone after the next sync.
Problem: In our business environment it is impossible to switch to Macs for contact administration. We need to do it from Outlook. This is one of several features needed for the adoption of iPhones.
Question: Is there a way to control this flag on the individual iPhone contact entries from Outlook Contacts?

Well, I think we figured it out.
Outlook doesn't offer a sorting flag on person or company name. Instead it uses a separate "File As" string. The problem with our contacts was that this "File As" string was frequently edited to be something else than exactly the personal or company name, e.g. it was set to an abbreviated company name. Once we set the "File As" to any of the defaults offered, i.e. person or company name, the sorting flag in iPhone was properly set through the synchronization.
Obviously, the application logic compares the content of these fields in Outlook and decides how to set the flag. If it can't find the company name in "File As" it defaults to person.
This was an expensive holdup for us. It cost us 2 man days to figure it out. Is there any place where such application logic is described?

  • Other apps don't respect Contact Sort and Display order

I just noticed this on my iPhone 4 and am wondering if anyone else has seen that the Map and Mail apps do not respect the 'Sort Order' and Display Order' settings that are chosen in 'Settings'.
I'm referring to when you get access to your contacts list when inside these apps (when you are composing a new email in Mail and use the '+' icon in the 'To:' & also when in Maps when using the 'contacts icon' to load an address in the 'Search' or 'Direction' fields.
On my iPhone 4 these two apps have the Sort and Display order apparently hardwired in that they don't change the ordering when it is changed in 'Settings'. It used to be that the contact list would always update everywhere to respect the odering chosen in 'Settings'. I thought that this must be an OS issue but for some strange reason on my old iPhone 3G that also has iOS 4 on it, I don't see this seemingly incorrect behavior....so at least in my case it is hardware specific.

    1. I have a simlar problem with my new iPhone.
    2. Settings configured to be "Last, First" (both sort&display).
2a. The Contacts app does not following this setting, but...
2b. The Phone app contact list correctly follows the setting.
    3. In Settings app, configured to be "First, Last" (both sort& display).
3a. The Contacts app follows this setting
3b. The Phone app contact list follows this setting.
    4. Could be that the Contacts app does not depend on the Settings (hard-coded?).

  • 6230i: sort order of contacts

    Hi,
I just sychronizied the contact of my 6230i with Outlook.
The sort order in the contacts menu is First Name, Last Name.
But I like to have it Last Name , First Name.
    How can I change this?
Or is there a good workaround.
    Thanks
    Peter

Sorry for VERY delayed reply, but I've only just seen this. I have the same problem.
Outlook allows you to display either way round, so you could
    1) export your contacts to an Excel file
    2) swap first and last name columns so that last names are in the first name column and vice versa
    3) import contacts back in Outlook
    4) reverse the Outlook display so that it looks as if nothing has changed
    5) re-synch with your phone.
I admit I haven't tried it becasue fortunately my wife prefers first name/last name sequence, but I'm fairly sure this will work.... Good luck
FYI - most Sony Ericsson phones such as T610 & K750i support displaying in either sequence.

  • Contacts sort/display order options

Real Android People app allows control over the sort order (e.g., lastname, firstname) and display order (e.g., firstname lastname).
I can't seem to find out how to set my preference on the Xperia Tablet Z. The app looks really good, but I can't seem to be able to use it the way I use People on my Galaxy Nexus (or on my Toshiba Excite before the XpeTabZ for that matter).
Is there a setting or ??? I'm missing?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Figured that was case. Have already replaced/augmented pretty but less functional Sony Calendar and Keyboard with Google versions. Sadly, Google hasn't made a Google People app available in Play Store.

  • Oracle 10G gives in sorted order without order by ,in 11g it is not.

we are facing a strange problem.
we have M Views on which we perform select operation ,we put joins of M Views and get the results by select operation , the results was in sorted order (asc) and we were not using any order by clause in the select query , this was in oracle 10G.
The compelte schema where these M views are and also the underneath tables are now migrated to oracle 11g using import/export option.
Now the queries which was giving the result set in sorted order (asc), are not given the result set in sorted order anymore. it is in different order but I think at always return the same order not asc or desc but an specific random order .
we can not change the query as of now as there are 1000+ and each query would require a order by statement .
Do we have any parameters which can be change , so that we can force oracle to use a different plan so that it gives result in order ?
the select queries are very simple ones not complicated no extra function or group by is used in most of the queries.
Please suggest possible solutions . Thanks much.

MOS Doc 345048.1 ('Group By' Does Not Guarantee a Sort Without Order By Clause In 10g and Above)
Go to http://support.oracle.com, log in to My Oracle Support, and search for 345048.1 If you don't have a My Oracle Support account, you'll need to contact whoever manages your company's Oracle support and ask them to create an account for you.
Basically, no version of Oracle has ever guaranteed the order of results if you don't specify an ORDER BY clause. In 10g, the only algorithm that was available to implement a GROUP BY happened to sort the results as a side effect. 11g introduced a new algorithm for grouping results that is more efficient and does not have the side effect of ordering the results. Most likely, your query plans have changed to use the more efficient grouping algorithm.
If you want the results to be sorted, you should add an appropriate ORDER BY clause. If you go through the MOS document, there will also be suggestions for ways that you can disable the new grouping algorithm though I would not recommend that.

  • First name last name sort order-how to correct on iphone

    hello all.
i have mobile me (hate that name) set correctly with the sort order of first name first in my extensive contacts list and the same in my address book on my main mac, yet my new iphone stubbornly refuses to order the contacts correctly, instead listing names by second name. as a result i am finding it almost impossible to use effectively as i know very few people by their last names.
    help!
    thanks

I go to Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendar. Then scroll down to bottom choices of Contacts. Set both Sort order and Display to Last, First. It worked for me.

  • Sort order changes when adding a phonetic last name?

I have my contacts sorted and displayed by first name. If I add a phonetic last name to a contact, it changes the order of that person to the top of list. Why wouldn't it leave them in the first name alphabetic order?

Ok this is what I'm doing...
My last name is spelled with "liter."
Siri pronounces that like "a 2 liter of soda."
So I've added the phonetic last name field on the contact card to help her pronounce it like "lighter."
    On my contact info,
    First name: Bill
    Last name: Hinderliter
    Phonetic last name: Hinderlighter
If I delete the phonetic last name field... It sorts the contact perfectly.
If I add it, the contact is placed on top of all the "B's" in the list.
On a side note... I found another website with a temporary fix to this problem. The person there says to use the nickname field instead of phonetic field when getting Siri to pronounce things.

  • How do I change the mailmerge sort order

When I want to send a Mail Merge using Pages to read an Address Book Group sorted by Surname, the resulting merge is produced sorted by First Name. This means every Merge has to be manually sorted, which is time consuming and wrong.
A merge letter I have used successfully for over three years, every time sorted by Surname, now produces the wrong sort order and cannot be changed. If I change the sort order in Address Book Preferences from Surname to First Name and back again the behaviour is unchanged. If I change the Sort order to "by First Name" it stays the same. Nothing seems to reassert the correct sorting order ie by Surname.
    How do I change it?
    TIA

    Basilisk,
Numbers will Mail Merge to Pages in the order of the Rows in the Numbers database. I always use Numbers for merging to Pages because I like the control it gives me of the order of printing but also because of the simplicity and versatility of controlling the content.
It couldn't be easier to move your data from Contacts/AddressBook to Numbers. Here are the simple steps:
In Contacts/AddressBook, Create a Group for your friends or clients that you wish to use with Mail Merge. Drag all the relevant subjects into that Group. (You probably have already done this.)
In Numbers, Create a new document and delete any default Table that appears in it.
Arrange your Desktop so you can see your Group list in Contacts and your new blank Numbers Sheet at the same time.
Drag your Contacts Group to your blank Numbers Sheet, creating a Table in Numbers with all the data of your contacts. You won't see all the data right away because some of it is in Hidden Columns.
Click on a cell in your Numbers Table to activate the table and Hover your mouse pointer over a column label tab in the Numbers Table. Click the menu triangle and Select: UnHide all Columns.
Now you can see all the data and can proceed with organizing it into the order you want the merge to have.
Remember to Save your organized Numbers document before you begin to setup the merge links in Pages. Save the Numbers document each time you make changes to it, prior to doing a Mail Merge.

  • Sort order notes iOS 6.0

Since it is finally possible to sort my Notes with MacOS 10.8.2 I am desperately seeking for the same possibility on my iPhone and iPad (iOS 6.0). It does neither use the sort-order (alphabetically!!!) from my desktop Mac nor am I able to change the sort-order on my iPhone. This is really a pain! Any solution out there???
Please Apple, if you dont want to allow the users to make their own choice of sort order, at least let them use and transfer the sort order they have on their Mac!!!
By the way: same problem with photos! With iOS 6.0 the devices do NOT use (anymore) the sort order of my iPhoto-folders. WHY? Help!

    HI Friend,
You must set the Cellular Data according (Settings>>General>>Cellular>>Cellular Data). Contact your carrier for further information.
Turn on Cellular Data, Roaming and 3G as well, even your carrier doesn't have 3G available.
Did you turn on Restrictions before?
    Hope it will be helpful

The following PowerShell script for your reference:
    $webURL = "http://siteurl";
    $listName = "ListName";
    $web = Get-SPWeb $webURL;
    $list = $web.Lists[$listName];
