Contacts sorting on first name after sync

I have my address book set to sort by last name and all is well there. When I sync my contacts, the sort order changes to first name. Is there something I am missing?

Murphy's law... As soon as you ask the question you find the answer. I found the Ipod settings for first/last and all is now ok on the iPod.

  • When I sync my contacts with Outlook, the iphone shows them sorted by first name.  I want them sorted by last name.

I have my contacts stored in Outlook (sorted by last name).  When I sync to my Iphone, the contacts are sorted by first name.  I have checked the Settings and show and file are checked as Last, First.  What can I do to change this sort?

On the phone, go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars select the account you want and scroll down to the settings for Contacts.  You can change display and sort order there.

  • Icloud contacts sorted by business name, how can I sort by first name?

my icloud contacts are sorted by business name, but I want to sort by first name.

    Group on this formula:
    month ()
This will group numerically 1 through 12.
Then simply DISPLAY the month name in your group header using this formula:
    MONTHNAME ()

  • Contact sort by Last Name

I  know this question has been asked before, but it's been a while, and I'm hoping someone has come  up with a solution.
My gmail contacts are sorted Last name, First name, but my contacts are sorted by first name.  While this is extremely frustrating, to make matters worse, my car uses the list, lust it is sorted by first name.
Please, please, please tell me there is a way to sort the contact list by Last name.

Not quite sure that answers the OP question though!   One solution is to download a free replacement dialer from the market, such as Dialer One, which allows the sorting of all contacts by Last Name, First Name

  • Iphone4s; Contacts : I want to order my contacts through their first name

Good Day ! I just wanna ask if there is a possibility that i could sort my contacts through their first name because on my iphone (3Gs) it is possible.
    Example : John Smith
                     Steve Jobbs
-What I actually would like to happen is that the name "John" will come first before "Steve" but in Iphone 4/4s, the order will be "Steve Jobbs" then "John Smith" because of their last name.
I've tried the solution, Settings -> Mail,Contacts,Calendars -> Contacts (then Sort and Display Order)
But the thing that I want still haven't solved. Is there any way that I could work this out?
I hope someone could help me/us solve this. Thank you ! Godbless.

Well, I don't know what to tell you, the only way to sort/display contacts on your phone is through those settings.

On the iPhone tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Contacts off then back on then reset the device.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Address book names are now sorted by first name.

After installing Snow Leopard my mail it is now sorted alphabetically by the first name, not the last. How do I change it back?

I just talked to an Apple Product Specialist about the change in Address Book searching with Snow Leopard. Here is where it stands right now:
In all previous versions of Address Book, the user could simply type 'T' to instantly go to contacts with last names that start with 'T' (and businesses that start with 'T').
In Snow Leopard, Address Book can no longer search with one letter the way it did before; it uses a 'Spotlight' type of search where the user must type the full name in order to get an exact match. This type of searching is useful for finding documents on the Mac or searching the Internet, but is totally inefficient for finding contacts in Address Book.
It sounds like someone at Apple decided this was a better way to search for contacts, because this change in search method is described in the new Address Book 'Help' file; it says, "As you type, Address Book begins to search all the information on the cards, including notes, and displays matching contacts, with the matching text highlighted in each card." For example, let's say someone used to type 'T' to search for a contact named Bill Tilman. Now what happens is that Address Book stops at the first person who's first name starts with 'T', and highlights all the T's in the person's card (the T in 'telephone', the T in 'Street', etc. The user must now scroll through all their contacts manually to find Bill Tilman, or else manually type out the complete name 'Bill Tilman'. (If they just type 'Bill', they will only get the first person named Bill.)
I hope Apple will reconsider and will allow Address Book to do the quick one-letter searches by last name (as opposed to 'Sort' by last name, which it still has) like it used to. (Or at least make this a choice in Address Book Preferences.) This would also be more compatible with the way iPhone searches for contacts; when you select a letter in the iPhone's contacts, it finds contacts who's last name starts with that letter, as well as businesses, just like Address Book always used to.

  • Address Book contacts alphabetized by first name on ipod

Using iTunes 7.6, I have synced my contacts from Address Book onto my ipod Nano (2nd generation.) They appear on the ipod, but using first name to sort (alphabetize). Very inconvenient! In Address Book I have Preferences set to sort by last name, although also set to have first name listed first. Why would it change when syncing to my ipod and how can I fix? Thanks in advance for help. I have searched discussions and Apple Support.

Ha...as far as I can tell, the AB will not sort. Please post here if you find out otherwise!
Also: can it "Look for Duplicate Entries" across selected groups? It doesn't seem like it!

  • Contact, Calendar and Notes Disappeared after Sync

    Please help!
After sync Contacts, Calendar and Notes to pc (Outlook), all are disappeared in iPhone but can't find them too in the pc. Have opened Outlook to retrieve the data but still can't find there.
However pic, videos and apps are found both in iphone and pc after sync.
Million thanks for your great help!

Did you previously ever open Outlook on your computer before?
If not, you may have lost your information.
You could possibly restore your iPhone from a backup.
Check if there is one first.
You can do that by going to Edit-> Preferences in the iTunes program
From there, click on Devices, and you will see a list of backups that were created.
To possibly get your contacts back, you could restore from a back-up and attempt a sync again.

  • Contact with same first name as previous, overwrit...

PC Suite 6.84. When I create a new contact with the same first name as an existing contact in PC Suite, and then I save it to the phone, the new contact info overwrites the old!
    For example:
    first name: Airlines
    last name: United
    So that entry is there.
    But then if I add:
    first name: Airlines
    last name: US Air
The United Airlines entry is not longer there, only the US Air entry.
I want "Airlines" as all the first names because then they should all be grouped together in the contacts list (sorted by 1st name).

What phone model do you have ?

  • Contacts - listed by first name, not last *!@

    OSX 10.3.9
I have imported my contacts from my Address Book, but instead of listing alphabetically by last name, as they appear in the Address Book or when I import them into Palm, they show up Alphabetized by first name.
    How do I change this?

In order to list the Contacts by Company Name as opposed to First/Last you have to save them as such on your Address Book on your computer first.
Under each contact that you wish to list under Company, select edit and check the box under the First & Last name that says "Company". This will save you that view both on your Address Book and on the iPhone once you sync it again.
Alternatively you can check the "This is a company" from the pull down menu under "Card". There may be a way to select all and do them all at once but I am not aware of it.
    Hope it helps.
