Contemplating moving to linux

i'm strongly considering moving over to linux completely, mainly because i want to get away from windows and because i'm looking for something new and interesting. for the past few weeks, i've been trying out various distros, but none has impressed me as much as arch, which seems to be the fastest and lightest one i've tried. still, a number of issues, more conceptual than technical, are keeping me from making the switch.
1. i686 vs. x86_64? i have a core 2 duo t5450. is there a reason not to use x86_64? i was unable to get it to work in virtualbox (cpu not detected as 64-bit), so i couldn't test it.
2. minimalism. i've nlited my xp installation iso down to 150mb by removing unused programs, components, and files. the windows directory is 467mb. can i get arch linux down to this size? i try to use the smallest installations possible, but it always seems like the fully installed system is far larger than xp.
3. light programs. on xp, i prefer to use portable applications, simply because they're cleaner (they don't add files all over the place) and often lighter. k-meleon, e.g., is around 8mb and fully self-contained in its directory. miranda is around 6mb. i like how the programs are separated from the rest of the system.
now, based on my experience, it doesn't look like this is possible on linux. first, applications don't seem to be self-contained in this way (i.e., files go all over the place). second, it looks like a whole lot is installed for each application. pcmanfm, e.g., required over 100mb of space. why are these packages so large? am i doing something wrong?
4. my objective is to recreate my xp system. here's a screenshot: http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6729 … hotjd7.png
i suppose the bare minimum i'd need would be:
-wireless
-bluetooth (mouse)
-openbox
-multi-protocol im (pidgin light?)
-light browser (midori?)
-light music and video players
i think i have a good idea of the direction i'd like to take, at least for these, but any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks.

No offense, but most of the stuff in this post has been discussed to death. Real quick:
64-bit: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 99#p452499
Minimalism: The core packages can be slimmed some, but not too much. I wouldn't worry about it - it's not bloat I am a fan of minimalism too.
Light programs: There are many threads on this, etc... for IM, I'd go with bitlbee and your IRC client. For a light video player, MPlayer.
Enjoy!
i realize that and i read through a lot of the discussion, but i was hoping for some simple, focused answers. e.g., regarding 64-bit, i had read about possible incompatibilities.

Well, for a window manager I guess the most minimal choice would be DWM. It's a single binary and it's only a few kb big, but it is still very functional. See suckless.org for more info.
There is a wiki article on light applications:

There's also the common applications list which list quite many light software:

I guess the LnF awards topic is worth mentioning as well:

thanks for the links. i had read through those earlier, but i had not heard of dwm. i'll check it out.
tomk wrote:If you're really stuck on the self-contained-app thing, have a look at gobolinux.org - that's their main selling point.
i wouldn't say i'm stuck on it, as i'd rather have a sprightly system than a barren one, but i value organizational simplicity.
i hadn't heard of gobolinux, but it looks very interesting. i'm trying it out right now.
Runiq wrote:
There is still GoboLinux, which makes apps remain in a single directory, each in its own. I don't use it, though, so can't make any further comments on minimalism or anything else. (edit: Too late. ^^)
On the minimalism thing: It's hard to find linux apps that are "self-contained", they mostly depend on each other. A Linux system is more like a patchwork system of sorts (at least that's what I have always imagined it to be ). It might not always look beautiful, but it works surprisingly well. In addition to that, the need for self-contained apps is usually eliminated as soon as you have decent package management (Yes, pacman, I'm looking at you). Say, if you install pcmanfm, pacman also installs all the libraries it depends on. But, since libraries are shared, when you install another program that needs exactly those libraries, they won't be installed again.
Apart from that, we have a plethora of lightweight apps - see wiki article above. (Many lightweight apps involve the use of the command line, btw). For lightweight IMing, I'd recommend either centerim or mcabber (with transports, as you seem to use msn). There ain't a thing that can beat MPD when it comes to playing music. Mplayer is a jack-of-all-trades for videos.
You can use x86_64 pretty well, though there are still issues with it. Some apps only have i686 binaries, and for these you'll have to install 32-bit libraries (arch isn't a multilib system by default).
[OT]On a sidenote, how in the world did you get your XP to look like THAT? Awesome, man. I wish mine'd look like that. XD[/OT]
one of the problems i have is finding files. e.g., whenever i install a program, it's not clear where the files go. sometimes they go into usr/bin sometimes into usr/local/bin, etc. and then i have no idea where the other files (e.g., dependencies) go. one thing i don't like about windows is that installations often involve files, usually dll files, getting thrown all over the place, into the program files directory, into system32, etc. i'm not sure how much transparency or control i can have with file installations on linux. that's why i was asking.
as for my xp system, it took me several years of learning how to modify system files to get it to look like that. here's a better shot: http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7508 … hotke3.png
some notes:
-bblean as my shell with my own theme
-miranda as the chat program, my own icons
-my own visual style
-run box, open/save dialog, shutdown dialog, copy dialog, etc. all reshacked. in particular, i reshacked appwiz.cpl, batmeter.dll, browselc.dll, comctl32.dll, comdlg32.dll, desk.cpl, explorer.exe, hdwwiz.cpl, inetcpl.cpl, intl.cpl, main.cpl, mmsys.cpl, moricons.dll, msgina.dll, mstask.dll, ncpa.dll, netshell.dll, nusrmgr.cpl, powercfg.cpl, shell32.dll, shimgvw.dll, stobject.dll, sysdm.cpl, timedate.cpl, wiashext.dll, wscui.cpl, wuaucpl.cpl, xpsp2res.dll.
is it possible to do the same on linux? when i say minimalism, i mean minimalism!
R00KIE wrote:Short answers
1) No reason why you shouldn't use x86_64, virtual machines are a different story, just try to boot Arch64
i'll definitely try it.
2) You will not be able to get Arch to use just 150MB but don't worry you will be able to get Arch with everything and the rest packing more punch that vista and still using less than half the space ... the path is forward
well, to be precise, 150mb is the size of the iso. 467mb is the size of my windows directory. still, i don't mind if linux is a little larger as long as it's cleaner, stabler, and faster.
Mr.Elendig wrote:XP is 8 years old now. A lot have happened in 8 years. No, you probably won't be able to get arch in as little disc space as XP without a lot of work. Specially since arch isn't optimized for disc space to begin with. Eg we don't split out -devel stuff.
i know it's old. that's one of the reasons why i'm looking at alternatives. i don't mind doing a lot of work to slim down arch, though.

  • Moving from Linux to Final Cut Pro, Need Help Creating Same Mpeg-4 videos

I am seeking to move into Final Cut Pro to develop these types of videos that I have previously been creating in Linux.
How can Final Cut Pro make these videos in the format specified below (OR VERY CLOSE TO IT)?
Please let me know what settings with screenshots, etc. will make final cut pro output in this way.
MINIMUM output requirements Video codec: Mpeg-4 (divx) with 2400 vbitrate, Audio Codec: MP3 and File container .avi
I look forward to your help, below are the details I've used in Linux, so please help me create these videos using Final Cut Pro.

    Motion estimation=2 (mbd=2)
Trellis searched quantization. This will find the optimal encoding for
each 8x8 block. Trellis searched quantization is quite simply an optimal
quantization in the PSNR versus bitrate sense (Assuming that there would
be no rounding errors introduced by the IDCT, which is obviously not the
case.). It simply finds a block for the minimum of error and lambda*bits.

    Not likely.
Easiest solution is to produce your edited material in FCP and then move the fully rendered, self-contained movie, in whatever format you are producing, to your Linux machine and use its encoder/transcoder.
Compressor will do the job for MP3 and MP4 but you will need to purchase the DIVX codec or transport it to your Mac. You need to talk to DiVX and you need to open the manual for Compressor. Compressor is not easy to learn how to use i na day but whatever you were using on your Linux box was much more difficult to learn.

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
    The MS articles in question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
    and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)

After doing some research, pretty much the only problem people had with installing Linux on machines with Windows 8 or newer was when they had problems with secure boot. Secure boot is a feature that can be enabled in the technical preview as well, however, since my machine is older than Windows 8 machines, it has a traditional BIOS instead of the UEFI firmware used by those machines to operate the secureboot feature. Therefore, my computer is incapable of running secure boot. I ended up double checking anyway, just for kicks, and sure enough secure boot is not being supported on my machine. Beyond that, I don't see how deleting a partition would help me gain access to a live cd, since they don't boot from the hard drive anyway.
You do know you can disable UEFI boot to Legacy boot if you want to install O/S that isn't Windows  on it but then you will not get support for it. And if you install Linux you will have to go to a Linux forum and get support and help from them there.

No issues that i have noticed so far, i can run the itunes visualizer in one screen and watch a movie in the other without the people looking legos. only problem i have found is when you rotate the views with ati's software the screens go funky for a little bit. but idk why youd want to look at your screen sideways anyways. as long as its agp i dont see why it wouldnt work.

Problem solved.  I compiled/installed i2c and lm-sensors (I'm using a 2.4.x kernel).  Both have several options for installing, and I used the first option for each (requires the least amount of work).  I followed all the install instructions of lm-sensors, and the result is the sensor binary, which gives me the same information as the BIOS at the command line (which is what I was hoping for).

Would the Wiki be a good home for hardware howtos?
That's where, for example, I learned how to get my simple USB keydrive up and running. As simple as it was to initialize in the end, I certainly didn't know the two or three required modules starting out.
Since I don't know how much insight an Arch maintainer has into the world of hardware they support I don't know how empowered they will be to come up with a "comprehensive" list or document. Maybe it's easier than I think...I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable than myself to answer that.
Please add your experiences to the Wiki though as a Howto...I have a webcam sitting around here somewhere that would be fun to use...
In terms of autoconfiguring, I'm torn. Although I don't like the stress of spending days Googling and the like for tidbits of info to get a configuration right, I also don't like the mystery behind automated tools that sometimes do and sometimes don't work.
Hmmm...it didn't work...why? What did the automated tool do? Which files did it modify? Where are they? Everytime I migrate to a distro that configures stuff for me, I always find myself leaving sometime later to go back to a distro that doesn't. Bah...
Someday in the future when those tools do work 99% of the time, you can bet I'll take advantage though!
    Good luck!

What problems are you having copying your photos to your computer ? If they were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites (i.e. they weren't synced to the iPad from a computer) then you should be able to copy them over to your PC : Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
If they were synced from a computer and you want yo copy them back to a computer then you will need a third-party app on your iPad to copy them off e.g. Simple Transfer Pro can copy them via your wifi network - photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to a device, so if you do copy them back they may not look exactly the same as the did on the computer that you synced them from (e.g. their dimensions may have changed, colours may look different). To delete synced photos from your iPad change your photo sync selection and resync - to delete all synced photos from a device try selecting and syncing just an empty folder on the Photos tab.

If I understood right, the tests lasts as long as the temperature is still changing, but letting the test run so my GPU has about 95° is not really a goog idea right? I'm on the original bios, 1.10. I would have tried updating to the 1.90 Linux bios version, but have been frightened off by the need, reported here, to put in the original OS recovery DVD and revert to that.
When I'm confident that I can make a copy of the existing 9.04 Ubuntu installation and recover back to that afterwards, I might look at updating the bios.
Does the later bios actually make much difference? A quick browse of what info is available doesn't reveal much. Of course, often if there is a huge mistake in early versions "they" prefer not to highlight it.
I'm limited by not having easy access to a USB DVD drive, so I'm trying to work with thumb drives or across the network.
