Content-aware fill with multi-colored background?

I've got a webpage footer to edit and I don't have the .psd file so I'm trying to use content-aware to take out an unwanted part.  Problem is, the background isn't one solid color and the area where I'm making the edit has a diffinitive color change...it's an actual line dividing the footer into two sections.  So, whenever I do the content aware fill it doesn't keep that line or the colors the way they "should" be.
Is this a situation where having the .psd file is a must?
Thanks for your help!
PS CS5 version 12.1 x32
Mac OS X 10.6.8

I used the lasso tool to select first one colour area.  selected the Brush tool so I could Alt click on the background colour, and Alt backspace to fill the selection.   Then I inverted the selection (ctrl Shift i).  Used the lasso with the ALT key to remove the red area from the selection.  Resampled the other background colour, and Alt backspace to fill.
I did wonder if there was more going on in background because the tiny graphic you uploaded has some artefacts and I was not sure if they were supposed to be there, but a simple graphic like that is an easy thing to create from scratch.   When I have to include a logo in magazine artwork, and only have a horrible little sample that I couldn't bare to put on the page, I enlarge it to a useful size, and use it to trace a nice, new, clean graphic from scratch.

  • How content-aware fill with smart objects

I've done a (hopefully) fairly exhaustive search, and don't see anything on how to use these things together...
Open an image as a smart object.  Add a layer for cloning and healing.  Maybe add a curves adjustment layer and/or a hue/sat adjustment layer.  Adjust things as needed.
Decide you want to extend the background on one side.  Increase the canvas on that side.  Select the chunk of canvas.  What process should be used to employ the content-aware fill for that new piece of canvas?  I don't seem to be able to have the smart object layer selected.  If I have another layer selected the fill fails saying there aren't enough opaque (?) pixels.

Oddly, I can't even find any discussion on this anywhere...  There's got to be a better way than what I've tried so far.
At present the only way I've found is to
    duplicate the smart object
    rasterize it
    select the part to fill
    do the content-aware fill
leave the selection on and copy/paste the selection so it's on a new layer
delete the rasterized copy of the smart object
There's gotta be a better/smarter/faster way than this...  How are other people doing this?

  • Content aware fill, fills with black'ish color but not content "CS6 beta"

    Hi guys,
I am working on a pano, which i am rotating and straighting, the idea being to use content aware fill to fill in the gap in the sky. However, when I apply the Content aware fill, I am getting a darkish block of color where i had done my marque selection.
Hopefully this is visable in the image attached
I am not sure if its because of the size of the image (approx 150x30in @ 300dpi) 2.8gb. but i have 96gb of ram so that shouldn't be an issue.
anyway, i thought id share this and hopefully also find a solution
    thanks

Just want to add, that small selections are ok, as in I can do contentaware fill, on small selections, but not across the whole pano.

  • Remove a logo from a video clip with content aware fill?

I know you can remove logo in photos using content aware fill, but you can't do it to a video clip. You can only do it to a frame, but you can't apply it to the entire video. I know photoshop is not a video editing software, but having this sort of feature makes sense for photoshop users especially with content aware fill.

I'm a career software architect engineer of 35 years, and I have to side with Howard on this one.
Like Howard, I feel you're thinking about this way too simplistically.  Trying to work out what best to fill a part of an image with in 3 dimensions (x, y, and time) and have it look believable almost boggles the mind, especially thinking of a general case (your logo example is far to simplistic in itself).  The task is far from a simple looping repeat of what is being done 2 dimensionally on a still frame.  Frankly, it's more likely related to what's done with CGI, where scenes are modeled in 3D (4D actually) so certain elements can be replaced believably.
Think about it...  If CAF is presently replacing part of an image with something it finds through some heuristics in another part of the image, and the stuff in that part of each frame is changing - and it would, because this is video, not still imagery - then it will select differently every time.  What makes you think it would select something that even resembles what it selected for another frame?  What you'd end up with is a frame by frame mishmash that would just make the outline of the selection obvious.
Regarding CAF applied to individual frames, then your finding the result isn't coming out as expected in all the frames of the video (e.g., when you're testing this concept) may indicate a problem with the way you're using the tool, or possibly even a bug.  You might want to describe step by step what you're doing and show the result you're [not] getting.

  • Removing Print from a Photo with Photoshop CS5's Content-Aware Fill

If I have a whole line of type on top of a photo a clients sends me and I want to remove it, can I mark the whole line off with the Healing Brush Tool and proceed? Or do I need to select each letter individually?
    Thank you.

I was able to remove the whole line of typ at once and have Content-Aware Fill do its magic to the whole area where there'd once been type.

  • White lines using Quick Selection Tool in conjunction with the Content Aware Fill.

When using quick selection tool in conjunction with the content aware fill i get a white line where the image join is.
How do i stop this from happening?
Basically, i need the select tool to 'over select' into the next photo so its a seamless fills.
This isn't a complex seletion, its a photomerge with blank, white areas that i am filling in using content away fill.

    thanks for your help.

  • Content aware fill issues?

I am trying to use content aware fill but every time I do the area filled in is always slightly darker? There is only one layer and no adjustment layres. I ahve tried make slightly different selections and it always is slightly darker. I can use the same selection with the patch tool and it works as expected. I can also use the spot healing brush with content aware and that works fine. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I get the same results I thin the content aware feature is good as a strating point but n some cases like a background like the one you have the patch tool might rove better.
this is the patch too or a combination of the content aware feature and the patch tool.
this is with the patch tool.
I don't make feature suggestions anymore for photoshop but i will here.
Te content aware feature requires that one deliberately tell the feature what the content that it should be aware of actually is, I know this feature was thought to be complete, but it is a good start only. It has little practical use in its current state as far as I can tell if it is going to be a serious retouching tool were the result is critical.
the way the feature should work is that the user defines the areas that are be the content it should be aware of it should then have areas that are transitional and there should be safe areas as well which have to be protected and all of these features should have settings as to color transition and darkness and lightness control as well as degrees of content substitution.
The feature has an excellent concept but is weak in execution and little thought was given to the practical side of the feature.

  • Content-Aware Fill working poorly in CC 2014

Content-Aware Fill does a very poor job in CC 2014. Color is off, density is off, texture is off. Is anyone else having this problem?
I had to switch back to the last version of CC in order to work on my current project.

I have absolutely no idea why you are addressing your reply to me, Ziggy,
Besides, it's a non sequitur. Having a "PC with Windows 7" is no indication of having a good machine, not even a poor machine.  It tells us nothing.

  • Photoshop Elements 13 Content Aware Fill Not Working

Hello, all. I am sort of new to Elements 13 and seem to have run into a bit of a blockade. I'm trying to eliminate a tree in the background of a photo with content aware fill capability; however, when I try this it loads as if it's working on it but when it's finished nothing has changed. I thought perhaps it wasn't prominent enough to recognize what to fill (which did seem unlikely), so I went ahead and tried it on something more isolated and still nothing is happening. I feel as though I must have something set incorrectly because a lot of my other tools aren't working either, but I can't imagine what it is I've done wrong.

  • Content aware fill at edge of picture

    Hello all,
I've just purchased and installed CS5.  I love the content aware fill feature.  I have an issue with it for which I'm looking for some suggestions...
I have a photo with a rope that goes through that I want to eliminate.  The background is grass and sky.  The content aware healing works great everywhere except when I extend the area that I want to fix all the way to the edge of the photo.  Away from the edges I get what I expect.  But at the edge, I get black or white "residue" overlayed on the cleaned up area.  Same thing happened when I tried to eliminate a foot that shows up at the bottom edge of the frame.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Charlie

    Some other things to try:
Select the image around the edges, making sure you expand the selection into the "good" pixels a little ways, then use the Edit - Fill function rather than using the Spot Healing brush.  This was the way that was shown in one of the CS5.com videos.
Another thing that might help under certain conditions - if you actually have data beyond the edges of the canvas (which can happen if you've been combining data or have used crop with the "Hide" option rather than Delete:  Try dragging the crop tool around the entire image then selecting the Delete button, then cropping.  I'm not sure but I think Content Aware Fill might be sensitive to image data that extends beyond the edges of the canvas.

  • CS5 64-bit Content Aware Fill kills Healing brush, clone stamp

    Here's the deal:
    1)  Open image for retouching-background layer only
    2)  Make copy of background layer 'cause I never retouch there and CAF won't work on the blank layer I use for all other retouching
    3)  Add blank layer above the previous two layers for clone stamp/healing work--can't use it for content-aware fill
    4)  Find something that will retouch better with CAF than cloning or healing and fix it with CAF on layer 2
    5)  The healing brush and clone stamp now do not work.  I can see them, and the clone stamp continues to preview in the brush correctly, but when clicked nothing happens.
The only solution I've found is to save the image and restart CS5.

Okay, I duplicated your setup exactly with CS5 64 bit on Win 7 x64.  Background layer, copy of background layer, and transparent touch-up layer.
You are unclear about exactly how you're invoking the Content Aware Fill.
I went through exactly the steps you suggested, as evidenced by the following Photoshop Edit log excerpt.  I saw NO difficulties using the Clone tool in the last step.
Are you aware you can use the SPOT Healing Brush, in Content Aware mode, to do what you're doing on the transparent top layer (thereby avoiding the need to work on the background copy layer)?  It is able to deal with the image being on the lower layers.

  • Content-aware-fill and magic-wand-tool

Hello! I use the content-aware-fill to remove some text from a photo. To do so, I use the "Polygonal Lasso Tool", select the text with a generous border and click edit -> fill -> content-aware-fill.
This works fine, but selecting a text with the lasso-tool is very much work. So I tried to use the magic-wand-tool - some clicks and the text is selected, very fast and fine. No applying the content-aware-fill - the text vanishes somehow, but the borders of the text are still visible. I guess you really have to select the text AND some background around it to make content-aware-fill work. But isn't there a way to do this with the magic-wand-tool? Increasing the tolerance didn't work, I would need something like "magic-wand-tool and increase the selected area +20 pixels in all directions".
    What procedure do you suggest?

Are you trying to remove a watermark that says something like "Proof" or "Copyright"?  If so, you won't get much help here.  The best advice in that case is to actually pay for the photo.  It's surprising how many people ask for help doing illegal things.
Please confirm you are not trying to defeat someone's copyright (e.g., post a small part of the image), and I'm sure you'll get more help.

  • Content-aware fill tool

Isn't there a way to subtract areas you don't want the content-aare fill tool to read? For ex., I want to extend an image and only fill using the background of an image... not the object in the foreground. Is there a way to tell it to not look at certain pixels so it will only gab the background pixels to fill with?
    -Kristie

There isn't but you can rerun content aware fill over a few times to have it generate different renditions which may work the way you like.
