Content Collector

I'm trying to figure out how to use Content Collector best. It seems that after I use it to place an object, the content vanishing from the Content Collector. Perhaps the problem is that I'm editing the object after I place it. Are there any good tutorials on the Content Collector?

This is probably what you need:
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-technology-sneaks-2012/indesign-content-collector-/
The default is that when you collect an asset and then place it in another place (another page, another file), that it drops out of the Content Collector. But there are two other options (circled below) where the content can stay in the Collector.
But, if you close the file from which the assets were collected, they will disappear. If you want longer storage, you should create a Library.

  • How to place grouped items into another object with content collector tool?

Is it possible to paste a group into another object (i.e. frame) by using the Content Collector Tool while linking the content?  Paste Into is either deselected or possibly whatever was last saved to the clipboard ends up inserting. I was able to place grouped, linked content into a frame (and later applied a scrollable frame overlay to it) once or twice but can't seem to repeat. Tried selecting the object being pasted into.. holding shift, holding ctrl, all kinds of options, just very confused now.

    Found a potential work-around (I think....).
    1. Use the Content Collector tool and select grouped objects
    2. Select Content Placer tool, check "Create Link"
    3. Place grouped object into doc/onto page with Content Placer tool
    4. Copy placed grouped objects
    5. Paste into frame that will be scrollable later
For now it seems like the link still works

A good tutorial/introduction but I have no idea why in the world would anyone go through all this instead of copy/paste in two key strokes??? this is not a feature, it's just bloat for the sake of being "kind of cool."
as for the actual interface - "you can't drag and drop"  that would make too much sense.... "don't use the esc key" that would make too much sense....

  • Content collector tool changes object names randomly (!)

    Hi there,
I am using the content collector tool to bring identical MSOs and buttons to a horizontal page (which might look the same as the vertical), and when I place all the stuff in the H page, all buttons and so the MSO changes its names adding "numbers" at the end of...
It is a bit frustrating, having to "rename" it all to its original names. As fair as I have read in Adobe Guidelines and tutorial videos, all buttons and MSOs should be named the same, for Analytics purposes... So, is there a way I can do to avoid these inconvenient changes? Or is this not that important and I'm being so fussy about the thing??!
    Thanks!

  • Content Collector Tool - Link Options (InDesign CC)

I've created a link and amended a headline (40pt size) in my print (parent) version and I want to link that change to the headline (20pt size) in my iPad (child) version without losing the type size? I've ticked the boxes of what I want to preserve in the link options panel but when I update the link it still warns me that I will lose any local edit changes (it reverts to the 40pt size headline in the parent version). How do I solve this problem? Thanks.

  • Using "Objects" like Illustrator in InDesign. Is there a modular way to use instances?

    Let me elaborate...
(I see Object Styles but not "Objects" Panel like in illustrator)
    What I want to do?
    1. Use a Name plate in my document that I can tweak later, and the changes reflect in all pages.
    2. I want to be able to change color, effects as well as text.
Example: Name plate that has one Title text box, one Plate number text box, two separate color background boxes, each for the Title and the Plate number
Possible solutions I am aware of?
    A. Use Master Page
Add Name plate to master page.
"Pluck out" the name plate on the page (lift-off as some call it)
Move it to new location, change text (plate number in my case), don't change any box colors.
Color changes to boxes in Master, reflects in all pages. Good!
Issue: Text boxes that have not been edited in the page, still do not reflect new updated text, color changes to box is updated.
    B. Use Find and Replace
Use this to find the name plate text and replace it with new text.
I have not tried it, but I am only wanting to change text style in one text box. Does this feature help to do this?
    C. (please add)
    My Questions:
    1. Is there any other method to accomplish this?
    2. When I have not edited the text, why solution A (plucking out from Master page) does not reflect changes to text? It does show changes to color background!

Thanks Willi Adelberger for this reminder (point1) It helped me to correct one "stuck thinking" I had, and helped to a degree.
I could not locate "Content Tools" but exploring now from Indesign help (content collector... was something else...)
    Stuck mindset!
I was stuck thinking I need an exact same feature (like "Objects" of Illustrator or "blocks" of Autocad or Instances in Max... where each is an instance of an archetype - master)
With that, I saw no need to use styles for the NamePlate I was using. Since it was defined in just the master page, while other pages simply moved it to new positions.
But then I went back and redefined those master objects with styles
    It helped to a degree
I can except for the textual content can control everything of the NamePlate text.
I still cannot simply change text like "PLATE" to "Plate" if I see such a need later (perhaps using find and replace can do).
I have now done the all but I cannot add a logo graphic (if I see a need later) to these name plates!
This is where I am not able to get an answer, if there is indeed a method to do things like referenced "Objects". Change the Object. All instances change.
PS: I ever tried a hack, by putting the text box inside another box and grouping them. So when I pluck from master (lift off) I just get the Group. I believed that since I am not touching the original "text" object in the process InDesign will keep the link intact and change in text on master will reflect changes to the pages. it did not work.

  • Copy mails are not going in journaled mailbox

    Hi,
I have hybrid set up with domains,
    contoso109.com and contoso109cloud.onmicrosoft.com.
Its a new set up with some number of users.
I did set journal rule with below command,
New-JournalRule -Name "Test Journal Rule" -JournalEmailAddress [email protected] -Scope Global -Recipient [email protected] -Enabled $true.
Now whatever the mail sent to or recvied by [email protected]  should go a copy to journal mailbox
    [email protected]
But i am not seeing any copy mails in the inbox of [email protected] .
Is this is some problem in setting up journal rule..?
    appreciate for any help.
    Thanks,
    Shankar

    Hi Shankar,
I have some tests in my lab.
The following cmdlet can be used to send all email messages that pass through
    [email protected] to [email protected]
New-JournalRule -Name "journal rule test1" -JournalEmailAddress "[email protected]" -Scope Global -Recipient
    [email protected] -Enabled $true
If you need to journal to external address, you need to create and configure the external SMTP journal recipient.
Here is a thread for your reference.

  • OT: What is CS6's equivalent to the "Donut"?

CS6 is out, the best roundup I've seen is at InDesign Secrets.  It all looks great especially creating forms!  BTW if you want to moan about the endnotes ommision I truly sympathise with you but start a new thread!
However just for fun my question is - what is the CS6 equivalent to the universally despised and never used Content Grabber tool, aka as the "Donut"?
My pick is it's the Content Collector and Placer Tools.  I haven't used it, but just looking at it my first thought is why the heck can't you just use the standard selection tool?  And why two tools?  Perhaps it's different in actual practise.  I don't know.  But it sure looks awkward....

I've not tried InDesign CS6 yet but here's my take on some of the noted new features
    Creating Interactive Forms
So what? You get a "Sample Library" you get some additions to the Buttons panel? Big whoop. I bet it doesn't work very well for complex forms.
    Alternate Layouts
Sounds great, I'm not sure if the alternate layouts are dynamic (make one change in one layout and it happens in the other, or if content can be unlinked between documents, or if they're standalone documents residing in one document?) But it sounds promising.
    Liquid Layout
An improvement to "Layout Adjustment" by the looks of it.
    Content Collector/Content Placer tools
A fancy Copy and Paste - that a lot of people can't really see the point of this feature
    On-object Link Status and Control
They added a node to the frame to let you know if a link isn't working - AMAZING
    Primary Text Frame
Finally got the Master Text Frame working properly - and renamed it
    Text Frames that Auto-Size
Something that a plugin developer did a while ago - it was good, looks like they've adapted it.
    Flexible Columns
Great - it seems to be related to the Text Frame Auto size though.
Still can't have different WIDTHS for each column though!
Improved EPUB 2 Export, new EPUB 3 Export
To be expected - it wasn't great in CS5.5 and the new stuff for Epub 3 is a work in progress
Grayscale Preview and Grayscale PDF Export
Well about time - only took them about 10 years
    Align to Key Object
Function taken from Illustrator - it's not a big deal - you could make a Key Object by locking an object before - don't see the difference here
    The Little Things
User Interface tweaks - Wow! They used title case
Placeholder text language options - AMAZING can get that from the web - took a few seconds
Split Window- added another icon to split windows - why?
Complex Calculations in Dialog Boxes and Panels - WOW - a computer doing calculations
Digital Publishing workspace - they put a bunch of useless tools (probably the wrong set of tools into a workspace - you can do that yourself?)
Export to PNG (with transparency) - GREAT can't wait to see what pancake way it exports this - I'll probably still have to export to PDF and save as PDF from photoshop for better quality.
    Extension Manager Sets - Eh?
Accurate screen sizing - seems like they fixed a bug
Keeps with Spans and Splits - Fixed another bug
    Recent Fonts List - AMAZING
Save as IDML- Finally make it intuitive for new users!!!
PANTONE PLUS SERIES color swatch libraries - you can download and install those yourself ...
Name Ranges in XLSX files - Fixed another bug
Export to Interactive As Pages - Fixed the Spreads bug as always on!
Package files includes overlay assets - Surely this should have been already - looks like another Bug Fix.
Overall - I don't see "New Features" I see mostly Old Features Updated and dressed up - Plus a Lot of "Bug Fixes" since CS5.5
Will CS5.5 get thes fixes? OR even CS5? I doubt it.
    Nothing really wowing me here.

  • Create master on object level?

Is there a way to create the same concept of a master on an object (or grouping of objects) level? I'm looking to put several objects on a page (shapes, text, images), group them, and reuse them. I am aware you can do this by using object libraries or exporing snippet files. However, when I make updates to the group, I'd like for it to retroactively update all instances of that group. I don't want to save the group as a flat image and link it, because I'd also like the ability to unlink an instance of the object (or object grouping) so I can edit that single instance without making changes to any other instances of that object (or object grouping).
Please let me know if there is anyway to achieve this, even if it requires a work-around. Thanks!

If you have CS6 or CC, you can use the Content Collector

  • Creating alternate layout --- missing a step --- how do I change setting so not only print options?

Hi - I'm running into an issue when going to Layout/Create Alternate Layout on one of my docs. The following options only appear vs any of the digital options (iPad-H or iPad-V).
Then when I hit the Page Size dropdown, these are the only options that appear.
I'm confused about how to generate a Digital Publishing option from my print doc.
I sense I'm missing an easy step, but can't figure it out. Many thanks in advance for replies.

You can’t have a print layout and DPS layout in the same file. You really need to create a new file at 1024x768 with digital publishing as the intent.
From there you can use the content collector tools or just copy/paste. Alternatively, use the save as command to create a new file and then do the adjustments to the layout.
For follow-ups please post in the DPS forum.

  • CS5-CS6 Pantone Color Differences

Hey Everyone. Long time no see. Congratulations to Peter on getting even further forum kudos. At my current rate of forum visiting this is going to be mostly a fansite.
Anywho. I recently put in CS6 on all the machines here at work (commercial printer, 11 macs) and have been hearing quite a bit of mumbles and grumbles on the new color system for spots. This may be an easy fix.
On CS5 my Pantone Solid Coated colors have a completely different CMYK and LAB breakdown from what CS6 is stating. Not only do the colors break down different and have different LAB values, but they look really different. This wigs my sales critters out as well as the designers. They don't like their Reflex Blue looking purple. We have all of our output devices set to nail Reflex Blue, for example regardless of them being large format flatbed, inkjet rollfed, digital press, offset press.
I migrated my Pantone Solid Coated from CS5 and have all the color settings the same in terms of color management and am still getting the breakdown differences. This creates an issue for me with the devices that don't have a horribly great spot library and require CMYK breakdowns they take advantage of (whether naturally doing well with CMYK or doing trickery like Fiery CMYK to CMYK conversions to make the output devices play nice). Even the Pantone+ Reflex Blues don't match between CS5 and CS6.
This is just really confusing for me. We have several ink vendors and they don't use the Pantone+ system for their inks. I don't even know what ink vendors have embraced it. We work with ink vendors varying from #2 and #10 in terms of market dominance, so it isn't a question of us just working with Brand X ink vendors.
    Any clues?
On a non color related note. Am I the only one who found the content collector and content placer tools to be indispensible tools? Every time I look down at the conveyer I say "oh conveyer, how did I live without you?" I unmapped copy and paste and ripped the option key off my keyboard.

I migrated my Pantone Solid Coated from CS5 and have all the color settings the same in terms of color management and am still getting the breakdown differences.
One thing that's different in CS6 is the solid ink libraries are now always Lab definitions. As far as I can tell unchecking the Ink Manger's Use Standard Lab Values for Spots never has any affect. Even if you load the older libraries the CMYK conversions from a solid ink color will be color managed and the CMYK values will change depending on the document's CMYK profile.
If you really need the legacy CMYK breakdowns you might have to use the old PANTONE solid to process.acb library, which is defined as process CMYK and uses the same CMYK builds as the older PANTONE solid coated library.

  • InDesign CS6 and CS5 tools are incomplete

    Hello all,
Why is Configurator 3.1 missing so many InDesign tools?
    Content Collector tools are missing.
And especially missing are the Stroke/Fill activation buttons; the Default Fill/Stroke buttons; the Swap Fill/Stroke buttons; the Formatting Affects Container/Text buttons; the Apply Color/Gradient/None buttons; the Normal/Bleed buttons.
These main omissions make it impossible to make a custom tool panel using Configurator 3.1.
    Or is there a way?
    Best to you,
    Mike Witherell in Maryland

In Configurator 3.1.1, the Content Collector tools were added.
Still, there is no Stroke/Fill/Default/Swap/Formatting Affects Container/Text; no Apply Color/Gradient?None; nor any Normal View / Bleed view buttons.
Is there a way around these limitations?
    Best,
    Mike Witherell in Maryland

  • Same image, different sizes

I need to export the same image in different formats, for iPhone, iPad, Web etc.
Actually, I import into one frame and then  - Copy/Paste into/Fill Frame Proportionally - on the other frames.
Is there a simple way to do this in one shot? I can write a script to do this, but I was wondering if there was some sort of Command I was missing…
    Thank you

Are yout talking about Alternative Layouts with the same content?
Use the Content Collector and Placer tools and use the same image or content several times. If you work with object styles (as you should ALWAYS do) you can specify a auto fitting property in that style.
With Liquid Layout you can specify the behavior of any frame how it resizes if the page gets or has different sizes.

  • Automaticaly building pages from XML input?

    Hello, folks
First: I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, if so bear with me, please.
We want to make an iPad application with a very tight deadline. For that we would need to process real fast about 70-90 pieces of news in InDesign with the less human intervention as possible (desired aim:none).
Each piece of news would have 1-3 pages of content with one or two pictures. We have build a set of templates with master pages for all of them (About 6-7 very simple variants).
We would like to define a workflow that would satisfy our needs and I believe something as I will describe next would serve them. What I would like from you, please, is telling me if that would be feasible, and if it is a good approach and, if so, what would we need to accomplish it:
We can place our content formatted as XML into a folder or set of folders.
This folders would act as hot folders, detected by InDesign (InDesign Server? Enfocus Switch?)
The software (ID server?) detects the presence of new content and then places the XML into the InDesing template assigned to that folder.
As we would have used XML-tagged frames in the templates (using InCopy or the content collector), the template would include vertical and horizontal versions (alternative layouts). So, InDesign would be doing automatically what a human would do by hand: Pick template, insert XML, save as ID document.
The software (enfocus switch? InDesign server?) would then place each appropriated final InDesign document in an oputput folder.
If we could manage to achieve the assignation of an article AND its upload and inclusion into an Adobe DPS folio in our account that would be SWEEEEEEET... But maybe that would be asking too much.
The human intervention would be then limited just to sieve the unwanted pieces of news and tweak minor things here and there.
So the question is: How does it sound? Whacky? Feasible? Way too expensive/complex? Any better/simpler idea?
    Thank you
    Gustavo (Posting from Madrid)

    Hi Gustavo,
maybe you already got help on this question. Production of iPad publications for several languages and/or formats can be challenging, I totally agree. And I think you have found a good way to solve the workflow. And I think this would be possibly to build aswell. We are you our own software, Ctrl InDesign Application Server (CIDAS) to build workflows around InDesign Server. And we have done some near what you descreib here. So if you need software to watch folders and trigger scripts on one or more instances of InDesign Server, and if you need coding help, contact me and we can give you some pricing.
    Regards
    Tobias

  • Publishing Across Different Mediums

This is more of a high-level question than anything.  My company provides education in various formats - and we use the same content in various mediums, mainly print and online.  We currently have a writer develop the content in Microsoft Word, then we take the content and put it into In-Design, and then we have to put it into an online course (spread across many pages using a "next" and "previous" navigation).  We are interested in cutting down all of the copying and pasting and duplicate work.  It is rather frustrating having to duplicate our work, and when we go back to make changes, having to make those changes in multiple places.
Does anyone know of an optimal way of publishing this content?  Ideally, we would want one place where we can make a change and it will auto-update or we can "push" the changes to those other locations without copying and pasting and reformatting every single time.

That is the purpose of InDesign's Content Collector and the Edit menu > Place and Link command and the ability to even remap styles from one layout to a different layout, though it has the same linked content. Therefore, if you edit the first document, the other documents will get the same textual update.
