Content filters on public mail i.e. gmail, yahoo etc

is there a way to create content policies on web security appliances on information sent on public mails( gmail yahoo ) or IMs?
it might sound stupid as you cannot control the mail server so filter what can be sent out or not but on the other hand you can monitor the web traffic
:-)

You might be referring to our DLP (Data Loss Prevention) seen on 6.0 and above. Below is a clip from our User Guide, you can search for that section to see if it fits your needs.
DATA SECURITY AND EXTERNAL DLP POLICIES OVERVIEW
In the Information Age, your organization’s data is one of its most prized possessions. Your
organization spends a lot of money making data available to your employees, customers, and
partners. Data is always on the move by traveling over the web and email. This increased
access poses challenges for information security professionals to figure out how to prevent the
malicious, accidental, or unintentional loss of sensitive and proprietary information.
The IronPort Web Security appliance secures your data by providing the following
capabilities:
• IronPort Data Security Filters. The IronPort Data Security Filters on the Web Security
appliance evaluate data leaving the network over HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP to control what
data goes where and how and by whom.
• Third party data loss prevention (DLP) integration. The Web Security appliance integrates
with leading third party content-aware DLP systems that identify and protect sensitive
data. The Web Proxy uses the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) which is a
lightweight HTTP based protocol that allows proxy servers to offload content scanning to
external systems. By offloading the content scanning to dedicated external systems, the
Web Proxy can take advantage of the deep content scanning in other products while
being free to perform other Web Proxy functions with minimal performance impact.

JavaMail supports two standard protocols for reading mail POP3 and IMAP.
As explained in the JavaMail FAQ (you found it, right?), the POP3 protocol
doesn't provide information on unread messages.
As far as I know, only Gmail supports IMAP. I don't believe either AOL or MSN
support even POP3, but I'm not sure.

  • Content filtering for Public WiFi

About 2 years ago, we set up free public wifi for our county park/zoo (we're government) and are using OpenDNS Umbrella services.  During the summer months, we have about 5k visitors/day, and during peak days, about 10k visitors/day.  We only really need a content filter for these people because it's a totally different pipe from our business network.  The OpenDNS solution works good for us, but it gets a little pricey because they charge per AP (we're running Ruckus AP's if anyone's curious).
The cost really hasn't really been an issue, but we're adding another 40 AP's for a different campus (Healthcare setting, residents) and the price per AP will start to add up.
Anyone have suggestions for any other solutions that might work in this scenario?

  • I constantly have to re-log-in on websites (like Gmail, yahoo, etc) during the same session. I get logged out within 15-20 minutes, or using different tabs.

In settings, I allow cookies for these sites, and I don't have this problem with Chrome or IE (hate IE!).
If I open another tab and am there for a minute, then go back to my email (gmail), then I have to re-log-in. This happens to other sites that I have to log into, too (shopping sites, yahoo, etc). Sometimes it does it while I am in the middle of typing an email. FRUSTRATING!!!
    Help??

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.

  • I can log on icloud on pc but when i enter password on my ipad mini first gen with ios8 it tells me wrong password. and i can receive mail but cannot send any mail via icloud, gmail, yahoo never had to set this up with ios7. how do i resolve this?

I updated my ipad mini first gen 32gig (4.3gig free) to run ios8 8.0(12A365) and i have a problem sending emails. i can receive mail but when i send it fails. my dropbox works fine, safari, and other apps work fine on the internet just the receiving of mail. Do i need to add a new outgoing server, though i dont remeber having to do this when i updated to ios7. how do i resolve this?

Here's a troubleshooting article from Apple:  iOS: Troubleshooting Mail
It doesn't seem to cover your specific issue, but have you tried using a different network (either a different wi-fi network, or switching from wi-fi to cellular or vice-versa if you have a wi-fi+cellular iPad)?
For GMail, iCloud and Yahoo, copies of messages are stored on their respective servers, so you could try deleting the account on your iPad, then re-adding each account one at a time to see if that resolves the issue.

  • Mail program that sends/receives in France, i.e. gmail, yahoo, etc.????

I am looking for a mail program that I can use on my iphone that will allow me to send and receive mail on my iphone while travelling in France and Belgium. I have heard that gmail will not send from the iphone while in Europe. If you know of a mail provider that will allow me to send/receive from the the mail program on the iphone, please respond. Thanks so much!

    Jeff,
You may want to try restoring your iPhone first. Restoring will erase all of your data and reinstall the operating system on the iPhone. (Note: Backup all of your data on your computer before restoring!) For information on restoring your iPhone, please read this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744
You also may want to try setting up your premium Yahoo account with the mail settings they provide you instead of the Yahoo presets. You can find many different Yahoo mail settings in this article:

  • Message filters vs Content Filters

    Differences:
    1. Message filters occur earlier in the email pipeline than content filters. Message filters before the email goes into the workqueue. The content filters occur inside the workqueue.
    2. Message filters are currently only administered from the command line. Content filters can be administered from both the CLI and the GUI interface, however, the GUI interface is the recommended mehtod.
    3. Content filters have an inbound and an outbound set of content filters, depending upon the direction of the message. That is, whether it's a relayed email (outgoing content filters) or inbound mail(inbound content filters). Message filters on the other hand, are autmoatically applied to both inbound and outgoing traffic, unless you lock it down to a specific listener. If you only have one listener, you may need to differentiate your flow of traffic by sendergroups or something else.
    4. Message filters and content filters can pretty much have the same conditions and actions. However, message filters allow for if-else conditions, so they are more robust.
    5. You can use message and content filters in unison. For example, use a message filter to insert a custom header that you content filter can key off of. However, this does not work the other way around. You cannot insert a custom header in the content filter and have the message filter key off of that info. Due to the way the email pipeline is set up, message filters come first, then content filters.
    6. Easy of use: content filters are a bit more intuitive and user-friendly. message filters are more advanced, so it has a bigger learning curve.
    7. Content filters used with customized incoming or outgoing mail policies allow you to splinter messages. Splintering messages allow you to split messages up by recipients. Message filters don't allow splintering and are applied to the entire message.

Actually, I just did a test on this and your point is half correct.
It's not the content filter that does the splintering, it's either the incoming or outgoing mail policy that does the splintering.
For example, if you only have one Default outgoing policy and an outgoing content filter that drops the mail if the destination is @yahoo.com.
If you sent in a test email with two recipients: [email protected] and [email protected]
Then the entire message would get dropped since there was only one Default outgoing policy.
However, you can allow for splintering if you had additional custom policies.
    For example,
    1. gmail-recipients
    2. yahoo-recipients
    3. Default policy
In that case, your test email would split into two separate emails and then you could have the content filters apply to each separately.
You are correct that message filters apply to the entire message and does not allow for message splintering.
However, content filtering, message splintering is only applicable if you have additional custom policy, either inbound or outgoing.
So, in additional to the requirement of mutliple recipients, you also need multiple policies, otherwise, have multiple recipients and only one Default policy will affect the entire message also.
Thanks for the attention to detail.
You've missed one of the biggest differences...
Message filters act on a _message_. Content filters act on a message/recipient pair.
If a message is only going to a single person then there's not any difference, but if a message is addresses to multiple people then the message filter will take the same action for all recipients, whilst the content filter will split ("splinter") the one message into multiple messages, with one (or possibly more) recipients each, and then act on each individually.

  • Content filtering after quarantine

    Hi,
does anyone know if it's possible to reapply the content filtering to a mail that has been quarantine by one content filter.
For example if I setup 10 content filters and the 2nd one quarantine the message because of a particular content, the administrator check the mail and after accept it, the mail need to pass trough the remaining 8 content filters and not been immediately delivered to the recipients.
    Is it possible?
    Thank you.

A quarantine action on a content filter does not immediately deliver the message to the quarantine as it is a non-final action (unless you have included a deliver() action on the filter) it only flags it for quarantine - the message will pass through the rest of the email pipeline (including any other content filters) - assuming that it does not get any other final actions (drop, bounce, deliver) the email will then be quarantined (and it can be quarantined in multiple quarantines depending on results from other filters). When the message is released it will be rescanned for viruses if you have antivirus scanning enabled before it is delivered but not be subject to any other filters.

  • How do I create Outgoing Mail Policie,Outgoing content filters and individual content filters?

    IronPort C160.
    async OS 6.5.3
Server 1 and server 2 are communicating through ironport.( and also scanning)
Server 1 we have setup domain abc.lk and yy.abc.lk in same server, this reside on DMZ. same segment ironport is connected,
Server 2: we have setup separate server int.abc.lk which is resided on internal lan.
Server 1 and server 2 should have to communicate internally, but server2 should not communicate to outside the world (eg. [email protected])
How do I create "Outgoing Mail Policies, Outgoing content filters and the individual content filters?
Note: Now server 1 and server2 are communicating internal and also communicating external ([email protected]), I need server 2 not to communicate external ([email protected]) it should be block and also do not block server 2 communicating to server1
    I have attached diagram also.
    Thanks.

    Hello Sumathi,
(Thanks for adding a diagram, that helps understanding your situation)
I think the simplest solution is to create a filter that allows server 2 (based on it's IP) to communicate with the internal domains, and drop the messages when they are targeted to any other domain
    so:
    filter source IP = servers
condition: message to: is NOT abc.lk or yy.abc.lk
    action: drop message
    hope this helps!

  • Mail vs. Gmail IMAP Junk Filtering?

The IMAP setup instructions for Gmail say that it is best to turn off any filtering in the Mail program, as the latter will attempt to download a lot of other stuff and create unwanted traffic.
However, I find that when I turn off junk filtering on Mail, the Gmail junk filter misses a lot of things the Mail junk filter seemed to catch before I went to Gmail IMAP. And, with Mail junk filtering turned off, I can't "train" it to catch junk mail that gets through the Gmail filter.
Is there any way to avoid the increased traffic I get from IMAP Gmail if I turn on my Mail junk filter?

Turn off junk mail filtering on GMail, don't use Mail and use the browser interface to GMail, get another email ISP, configure your own incoming rules for Mail to catch specific junk that GMail's filters miss.

  • IPhone 3G mail with IMAP gmail getting "message has no content"

I have been using a POP3 mail account with no trouble. I switched to gMail, and started getting occasional problems where mail forwarded from my work e-mail would show up as "message has no content" on the iPhone, yet in the gMail web interface, there is indeed content. I have seen that a lot of other people are having this problem also, and it seems to have started with the upgrade to software version 2.1. Does anyone know if Apple is working on this problem? I really need to get this to work, because I am the sole iPhone user here amidst a sea of Blackberry users, and I cannot afford to look like I am the only one having a problem.

have the exact same problem and would appreciate some suggestions and solutions as well.

  • DKIM/DomainKeys Content Filters Best Practices?

    Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone has some best practices on implementing content filters for domain keys/dkim results on incoming mail. I am having a tough time figuring out a good solution to this problem as we have various users who also subscribe to mailing lists, which obviously break domain keys if the server doesn't resign the message?
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
SDN is using Web Page Composer. You should also take a look into WPC for publishing EFP. WPC is based on KM, but has several advantages over XML Forms.
    Regarding the security aspect:
There are several SDN articles / documentations about how to implement an EFP (like: Look & Feel, Framework Pages and Portal Navigation).
You can restrict access for anonymous users - in fact, you'll have to explicitly allow access for anonymous users. If you don't like that your users can access something else than /etc/public/, just don't give the guest user read access. You can alsouse a reverse proxy to allow access to only the necessary KM folders and redirect the rest to the start page.

  • High Amount of Spam on Exchange 2013 - Content Filtering is Enabled but Pfizer Spam Filling Up Everyone's Mailboxes

    Hello
Previously I used Exchange 2010 with Forefront Threat Protection installed and this used to do a good job of stopping all the spam.
However since updating to Exchange 2013 earlier this year and enabling the integrated spam filtering everyone noticed a sudden increase in the amount of spam which was getting through which has been bad for a long time.
We have been living with it but in the last 3 weeks everyone has started getting about 40 emails a day from Pfizer for Viagra. All these seem to defeat the content filtering as Viagra is spelt with an extra I and the email address is always different.
Also images in emails are blocked by default but somehow all the images on these spam messages appear for everyone.
I am not sure the spam filtering is working at all and I'm not sure how to tell as ForeFront gives you a nice graphical dashboard but I can find nothing similar to this in Exchange and PowerShell seems the only way to configure the limited functionality
    of the content filter.
Is there any way to get rid of these messages as it doesn't look very good when they are constantly popping up for everyone?
    Thanks

  • Mail 3 and gmail issues, notes/todo's in Mail

    Hello,
I use Mail 3 with my google mail account using IMAP.
I'd like to use the new notes/todo function provided by Mail. When I create a new note, it will be reset to the default values after a minute or two.
And it doesn't appear in my iCal calender(s) at any time.
I've tried both provided ways to store the notes: as mail on the server and as a local one. The problem is always the same.
When I delete the "notes mail" from my gmail account using the web interface, Mail 3 hangs when I terminate it. Removing the note using Mail 3 solved this.
But has anyone here an idea how I can use the notes feature with my gmail account (IMAP)? And is it possible to see my reminders in the calender?
    Thank's for every good idea,
    Felix

The Gmail app is a direct link to Gmail so deleting from the Gmail app will delete said email however from the default email app that is simply put a forwarding address so the email will not be deleted - It may be deleted or made exempt from future sync'ing but you often find that if the email hasn't fully loaded then it will be seen as unread and will reappear
