Content Index in Unknown state

We are running exchange 2013 with 2 servers in a DAG. On one of the servers we are getting error messages in the event log to do with the search function.

I have looked on the internet for a solution and so far nothing has helped the issue.  I've looked at the content submitters group but I would have thought it would have effected both servers and not just 1.
I've run the script to install the search foundation service but this has not resolved the issue.
Has anyone come across the errors both and resolved the issue?
Thanks

Hi,
Please check the content index status of databases in DAG. If it's unhealthy, please rebuild content index to check result.

  • Exchange Server 2013 Content Index is in "Unknown" state.

    Hi Experts,
We have two Exchange Server 2013 CU3 installed in our customer premises 6 months back on top of Windows Server 2012 OS.
From last week, we are getting the content index status as "Unknown" while checking the "Get-Mailboxdatabasecopystatus".
We have tried to reseed the database by using "update-mailboxdatabasecopy -identity <db> -deleteexistingfiles then we came to know the server is not responding on port 3863.
Attached image is for your reference.
Need support from experts to resolve at the earliest.

    Hi,
I had the same issue and was able to solved by recreate the search index component on the mailbox servers
Recreate the Search Foundation from scratch
Stop and disable the search services and rename the Data Folder  "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\HostController\Data"
Open power shell and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\Installer
    Run the command :  .\installconfig.ps1 -action I -dataFolder "c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\HostController\Data"
    Output should be like
    [PS] C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\Installer>.\installconfig.ps1 -action I -dataFolder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\HostController\Data"
    Configuring Search Foundation for Exchange....
Successfully configured Search Foundation for Exchange
Rename the Index files for the database that are active on the node .
    Start the Search Services
Removed a configuration entry that refers to the ContentSubmitters group. This entry is present in four XML files. Each file is called WcfConfigurator.
you can find each file in the following folder:
    %ExchangeInstallPath%\Bin\Search\Ceres\HostController\Data\Nodes\Fsis\NODENAME\Configuration\Local
Here, “%ExchangeInstallPath%” is the Exchange installation root path, and the placeholder NODENAME represents one of the following names. (There is one name for each of the four files that are to be edited.)
    AdminNode1
    ContentEngineNode1
    IndexNode1
    InteractionEngineNode1
These are text files. You can use Notepad or any other convenient plain text editor to change them. Make sure that you make only the change that is described here.
Each file contains at most one line that contains the following: <AuthorizedRole>ContentSubmitters</AuthorizedRole>
Remove this line, and then save the file. Repeat this operation for each of the four files, and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Search Host Controller service.
Found the Index files in Crawling state as expected instead of Unknown.
Once all the Active copies are healthy and still the copies in failed and suspended state, then you can reseed the catalog files only using the below command
    Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Identity BD\MBserver –CatalogOnly
    Good Luck..

  • Database passive content index state stays FailedAndSuspended even after reseeding

I have a mailbox database with two copies in a database availability group, the active copy is healthy and its content index state reports healthy as well, the passive copy is healthy but its content index state reports FailedAndSuspended.
I tried the: Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy <DBName>\<ServerName> -CatalogOnly more than one time, it completes (says 100KB written) but the state never changes.
I even tried to manually stop the service>delete CI>start the service, the CI folder was recreated (about 1 GB) but still the state is still FailedAndSuspended.
    Please Help!

I found the following warning in the event log,

  • Content Index State Crawling

We have an Exchange database that seems to always have a Content Index State that is crawling.  Some end users have complained about slow searches and indexing issues (which is expected).  We have
stopped the search services and renamed the catalog directory in an effort to rebuild the search catalog, but it just goes right back to crawling.  The database is only about 300GB, so I don't think size is an issue.
Could it be there is some corruption on the database that is causing issues with the index catalog.  We have removed the database from the DAG and tried it as a stand alone database, with the same
    results.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

did you find anything in the event viewer (app/Sys logs).
You may consider restarting Search Indexer service and then check if that gets healthy or not.
If it still doesn't say healthy then you might have to consider Resetting Search Index for problematic Database or all database if all if it is a problem with all databases.
Refer to the link below to get info about how to reset Search index for a database.

  • Exchange 2013: Content Index State Failed

I am running two, two node DAG's with Exchange 2013.
One DAG pair is running 5 databases with Server 2012 Standard and the second DAG pair is running Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard with a single shared database.
No matter what I try, ALL 6 databases show "ContentIndexState: Failed" with "ContentIndexErrorMessage: An internal error occurred for the database or its index.".
I have tried rebuilding the indexes manually, automatically and manually copying the database files between servers.  I also receive errors when trying to failover the databases because the content index state is failed.
In my test environment I have a very similar setup working fine with no issues.
Please let me know what I can try to get this resolved.
The error I receive when running the following set of commands is:

    Hi,
Please check the following article and see if it can resolve your problem.
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2807668
Please check the active database, make sure the content index is healthy. If possible, please rebuild content index of active database. And then reseed passive database copy to check result.

  • Content index state: Failed

    Hi.
I have been restoring the entire Windows after a bigger problem in the past. However, there were data for Exchange server at a completely different disk which was not affected.
But now I can not load up OWA and when you look in the ECP so says the following under databases "Content index state: Failed"
I have tried to repair it but without any success.
The operation couldn't be performed because object '0747478411\MAIL-SERVER01' couldn't be found on 'server'.

Sorry, we can't get that information right now. Please try again later. If the problem continues, contact your helpdesk.

    Hi Jesper,
    Thank you for your question.
By my understanding, we should not simply recover window system, we should performance a disaster recover for Exchange by the following link:

  • Content Index State = 5?

    Hi all,
I have a sort of strange issue. When i look at the database copies check the ContentIndexState column, i would have expected the status to be 'Healthy' or 'FailedAndSuspended' or even 'Crawling'. I have two copies where the status is simply just '5'. Anyone
have some idea what is happening here and how to correct it?
    /Trev

    Hi,
Agree with Andy. Please run the Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy cmdlet against this database copy to check result.
You can also rebuild content index to check result, the time of rebuding index is based on the database size.

  • Mailbox Database Content Index Failed and Suspended

    Hello,
I am having an issue with a Mailbox Database.  The content index shows FailedAndSuspended.  there are no Bad Copy Counts  and it shows as Mounted.  I have no DAG so this is a single database and followed the article
    here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee633475(v=exchg.150).aspx
After it crawled for a little while it went to Failed, then unknown, then crawling, and has finally ended up at FailedAndSuspended again.  I am also popping errors as follows:
    MSExchangeFastSearch Event ID 1004
    MSExchangeIS Event ID 1012
    MSExchange  ADAccess Event ID 4020
MSExchangeRepl Event ID 4087 (Though this is weird as it is a stand alone database why would it try to replicate it?)
    MSExchange Common Event ID 4999
The following Warnings are hitting at the same time:
    MSExchangeFastSearch Event ID 1006, 1009, 1010
    MSExchange Mid-Tier Storage Event ID 6002, 10010
Anyone have any thoughts on a fix for this?

Ok I did a Set-MailboxDatabase "Mailbox Database #" -IndexEnabled $false, then stopped both the MS Exchange Search and MS Exchange Search Host Controllers. Started them again and it showed disabled when I did a get-mailboxdatabasecopystatus. I then went
Set-MailboxDatabase "Mailbox Database #" -IndexEnabled $true. After about 10 minutes got a FailedAndSuspended Status. So here are the logs from event viewer.

  • DAG Big Problem with Content Indexes / Failed on both Servers

    Hello,
i have 20 DBs in a DAG. And for 5 days both! content indexes failed.
I tried to recreate it on the passive server stopping the services and deleting the folders but it does not work. I will try the contentsubmitters group this evening (because this is very cpu consuming).
If that doesn't work what else can i do ?
    Best regards
    Stephan

    Hi ,
Please use the below mentioned blog to have a healthy context index state for your active databases .
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchangesearch/archive/2013/10/28/rebuild-an-index-on-exchange-2013-for-specific-databases.aspx
Then do the following for the passive copies.
Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy -identity "name of the DB" -CatalogOnly
Note : Before updating please suspend the passive database copy and then resume the copy once the update gets completed.
    Regards
    S.Nithyanandham

  • Unknown state or association field

    Hi,
I have a table "client" that has many "request", both have an id attribute that´s the primary key. I need to query the request of a type that belong to a certain type of client. In the Request entity I have the following named query:
    @NamedQuery(name="Request.findByTypeAndClient", query="Select r from Request where r.type = :type and r.client.clientType= :clientType")
The app server starts fine, but when I try just get to the index page I get the following error:
    javax.faces.el.EvaluationException: javax.faces.FacesException: javax.faces.FacesException: Can't instantiate class: 'com.app.web.backing.Index'.. class com.app.web.backing.Index : javax.ejb.EJBException:
Exception Description: Unknown state or association field [clientType] of class [com.app.entity.Request].; nested exception is: Exception [TOPLINK-8030] (Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2006.8 (Build 060829)): oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.EJBQLException
Exception Description: Unknown state or association field [clientType] of class [com.app.entity.Request].
         at com.sun.faces.el.ValueBindingImpl.getValue(ValueBindingImpl.java:190)
Caused by: javax.ejb.EJBException: Exception Description: Unknown state or association field [clientType] of class [com.app.entity.Request].; nested exception is: Exception [TOPLINK-8030] (Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2006.8 (Build 060829)): oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.EJBQLException
Exception Description: *Unknown state or association field [clientType] of class [com.app.entity.Request].*
I've made sure I don't even use that query at the index page.
Why does it happen and how could I fix it?
    I'm using jdev 10.1.3
    Thanks in advance

    That could be a hint...
The Client entity has a list of Requests, and the Request entity keeps a reference to the Client it belongs to. Since what I'm trying to list are the requests, and not the clients, I was expecting I could use the Client reference in the Request entity to make the query. Isn't it possible?

  • Disable "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" for Mointpoints

    Hey Guys,
I wandt to optimize all our SQL Servers and so I want to disable the  "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" option in the Volume Properties.
The SQL Server is installed under D:\SQLSERVER which is a normal folder.
For the root and sub directories d:\ the following solution works:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bf99c428-7fbc-4cd5-9a4a-0c6b69e906ab/disable-allow-files-on-this-drive-to-have-contents-indexed-in-addition-to-file-properties?forum=ITCG&prof=required
But we have Mountpoints for the Data and Log Files under D:\SQLUSRDATA and D:\SQLUSRLOG. When I use the NotContentIndexed Attribute on this direcotry there is no error message. But when I go to  Properties of the Mountpoint folder under General >
Properties The "Allow files..." option is still activated.
Is there a solution to deactivate Indexing on Mointpoints via Powershell?

Your question has nothing to do with scripting.
I recommend that all SQLServer systems have a GP applied that sets the minimum requirements for the server.  This would include disabling the indexing service which serves no purpose on a SQLServer based system.  You should also disable all AV
scanning of SQLServer folders as this can create performance issues and may make SQLServer unstable.  Many AV products will skip database files on purpose.
The indexer will not index SQLServer files unless you have altered its behavior so, mostly, what you are doing is unnecessary.
Post you issues in the SQLServer forum to get the latest requirements and settings for you implementation.
Again thisis not a scripting issue and it should not bemanaged via a  script.  It is a deployment issue and should bemanaged in that way.  YOu can use PowerShell V4 and later DSC SDK to set a standard "Desired State" for you SQLServers.
Use of DSC with  SQLServer should also be worked out with the SQLServer forum MVPs and others there.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Tracker 0.8.3 and file content indexing

    Hi forum,
yesterday I decided to reinstall meta tracker for indexing my system but I had some problems: I don't need to index file contents, I just want to index file names and the possibility to tag files. But in the tracker config dialog there isn't any kind of check box for disabling the content indexing. Does anyone know how to disable file content indexing and why is this option disabled in tracker 0.8.3-1?
    Thanks,
    Rief

    Hi,
A product compatibility is determined by 3 parts:
The product has passed Windows certification requirements and received a logo.
The app publisher or device manufacturer stated this products works with Windows 8\8.1\RT\7....
Windows 8.1 is designed with compatibility in mind.If an app or device ran on Windows 8, our goal is that it should run on Windows 8.1. During Windows development, we test most of the popular products and we are providing compatibility statements based
on this testing. For products we have not tested, compatibility statements for Windows 8.1 are being provided based on the product's compatibility status for Windows 8.
Microsoft will also take user's feedback into account and make updates accordingly, so it might take some time to update a status.
