Content of all smart mailboxes in 10.9 disappeared

Hello,
After installing 10.9 (upgrading) on my Macbook Pro all the content of my various smart mailboxes in my Mail 7 have disappeared.
Why, and especially, how I'll revived the content?
TIA

Hi, I'm not sure but maybe you disabled spotlight ? I do not see smart mailboxes in case of disabled spotlight.
Check this page http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disable-or-enable-spotlight-in-mac-os-x-lion/

  • How do I get my old smart mailboxes back?, annoyingly disappeared after an software upgrade overnight!

My smart mailboxes with a lot of important info have disappeared following a software update, im not terribly computer literate so a step by step answer would be enormously helpful!

Could you give some examples of a smart folder you might have? It sounds like you had a lot.
    To get you started...
VIPs are smart folders for a person.  It's a quick option to view the emails from a person.
If you click on a persons's name in an email you'll see a down arrow. Select Add to VIP.
You can put contacts in groups. For example, friends, family, classmates, team members etc.  Groups are created in Contacts.app.
Create a smart folder for a group:
Sender is member of group > family
Date Received is Today/This Week (example of additional criteria)
My favorite smart folder is named Unread Today.
    Message is unread
    Date Received is > Today
Tip: Once you create a smart folder, take a screen shot so you can recreate it in the future. I also recommend that you setup Time Machine backups.
    Command-Shift-3 takes the entire screen
Command-Shift-4 takes a portion of the screen. <--use this one
    Hope this helps!

  • If I buy a new macbook air for travelling, will I be able to transfer the contents of all my mailboxes across?

I tried to watch an episode of a TV series from my iTunes library and while it looked fine on the Mac screen and sounded fine on the TV screen, on the TV screen the area of the screen where the TV picture should have been was just a chequerboard.  I have recently installed a VPN and Air Parrot - might this be affecting things?  I have watched earlier episodes of the TV series with no problems and I tried an episode from another TV series with the same result.
    Any advice gratefully received! thanks.

    You sure about this? https://www.apple.com/why-mac/better-support/
"Purchase a One to One membership at the same time you get your new Mac from an Apple Retail Store, and you won’t have to spend hours transferring all your stuff. Just bring in your old PC, and we’ll do it for you. A Specialist will move all your files — email, contacts, music, photos, documents, calendar, desktop items — and make sure everything is exactly where it should be. One to One costs just $99, and it includes a year’s worth of one-hour, face-to-face training sessions. It’s like getting a head start before you start."
This is really disappointing.  Buy a $3,000 computer from them and then buy another one for $1,000+ and all they want to do is screw you over, nickle and dime you and price gouge you on setting it up.

  • Mail: smart mailbox contents disappears/search doesn't work & fix is only temporary

Since installing Mavericks (including the Mail update), the contents of my Smart Mailboxes disappears (the Mailboxes themselves are listed, there's just no content) and my ability to get results from Search within Mail disappears.
I have done a lot of searching here and via Google and read other people with similar problems.  I have done the usual magical stuff: resetting permissions (including the version that involves the command "resetpassword"), deleting caches, etc. - but to no avail.
Spotlight clearly knows about all this mail, because I can find it with HoudahSpot, which uses the same database, but somehow Mail is not able to read what Spotlight knows.
Now there is a commonly recommended fix, which is to go to Terminal and type some version of:
    mdimport ~/Library/Mail/V2
This works (as does reindexing the entire disk)!  But only for about a half-hour to an hour, at which point Mail reverts to its previous state.  Running the command again works again, but once again the cure goes away shortly after.  Once again, the Smart Mailboxes are empty and search in Mail stops giving reslts.
Can anyone suggest a real, permanent solution to this problem, besides switching to another email program?

Okay, I think I understand better now.  So I just ran a test, by creating the following rule:
I specifically chose an address (obviously not the one shown) that I had a message from in my Inbox, and a word that was present in the subject line of several messages in my Inbox.  When I ran this rule on my Inbox, it copied exactly the messages I would have expected into the test mailbox.  Are you seeing different behavior with the same rule, or is your rule constructed differently?
If the difficulty is with running the rule, note that (as I said earlier) rules only run automatically on unread incoming messages.  It won't run automatically on existing messages or on messages on an IMAP mail server that you have read on another device using (in which case they will have been marked as read).  If you need to run this in such conditions, you'll have to either run the rule manually or run it via an AppleScript or something similar that is somehow (via something other than Mail) made to execute at certain times/intervals or under certain conditions.
And you're correct, a smart mailbox would be totally inappropriate for what you're trying to do!  It would behave exactly as you guessed.

  • Smart Mailboxes - I use smart mailboxes on my mac pro without issue.  On my iMac OS X v10.7.4 the smart mailboxes disappear when ever mail is restarted.  This does not happen on my mac pro.  Other functions work as intended.

The OS on my iMac is OS X v10.7.4.  No issue setting up the smart mailboxes and they work fine until I restart the imac or restart the mail application.  When I do this the all smart mailboxes (not folders) are gone.  Can someone please point me to where I might look for resolution??

  • Archiving smart mailboxes?

    Morning.
Is it possible to archive the content of a smart mailbox?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

I believe you have to delete them. Mail just archives the mailbox as it is. You can archive old stuff by creating a smart mailbox that only shows items before a certain date (one month ago, for instance), but then you'll have to delete the files yourself. I think you might be able to set something up with Automator so it will archive and then delete the files, but I'm not sure.

  • Automatically delete Smart Mailbox contents?

Does anyone know of an easy way to automatically delete all messages within a specific Smart Mailbox when Mail is opened? I found an Automator action for selecting Smart Folder contents in the Finder, but nothing for Smart Mailboxes.
    Thanks,
    Sky

    Hi Dan,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I do understand the difference between smart mailboxes and real folders, and I suppose either could work for my application. What I'm looking for is an add-on like Johan Carlsson's Get Smart Folder Contents Automator add-on (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/getsmartfoldercontents.html) that works instead with Smart Mailboxes.
Setting up a rule in Mail.app will not work for me as I'm using SpamSieve and have the Junk filters disabled, so again it would have to be an Automator add-on that processes local mail folders.
    Regards,
    Sky

  • Mail VIP list not showing "all VIPs" or useable in Smart mailboxes

    Hi there,
I thought I'd give the Mail app a go again in Yosemite after abandoning it when it all went horribly wrong in Mavericks.
I can't get the VIP list to work properly though. I have VIPs and I can open the VIP list to select an individual VIP (I have about 50) but I want to click on the main VIPs label to see mails from all VIPs. Specifically, I want to limit to the view to Inbox Only, so I can see all messages from any VIP that is currently in my inbox. The problem is, no mail shows when clicking on the main VIPs label, only when I click on individual VIP names. Also, if I create a Smart mailbox, using Sender is VIP, nothing works (no mails are found). I can still select multiple individual VIPs out of the list and that will show them all, but it's a pain and just doesn't seem like the right thing to do. in iOS, tapping on the VIP inbox, lists all mails from VIPs, why not on the mac too?
Anyone else having the same problems?
As a further clue. When you click on one mail box to another, the list of mails instantly changes to show the mails in the new mailbox. This is true if you click from an individual mailbox to the 'group' one. But, if I click from any mail box (that is showing mail) to the mail VIPs group, then the mails from the previous mailbox are still shown, ie the view doesn't re-fresh. I have to click on the main VIPs tab twice to get the mail list to refresh (which then refreshes to an empty list due to the problem above).
    This is driving me mad!

I have worked this out for myself and fixed the problem.
It's down to a bug in Mail (or possibly Spotlight). I had a VIP with an apostrophe in her email address which Mail wasn't handling properly and it was causing the search query to fail. Removing that contact from the VIP list fixed my issue.
Technically, what's happening is that the code wasn't "escaping" this special character and that was causing a syntax error in the search query.

  • Mac Mini: Smart mailbox items disappear after a month in one mailbox but stay for years in others.  All settings are the same!

I have several Smart mailboxes set up on my Mac.
Some of them hold all mail for years and others delete after about a month.
All settings are the same on all mailboxes.

    BDAqua Hi,
I have only 1 E-mail account, It is a POP and the one earlier account that I set up that works fine and saves all E-mails comes form a friend who also runs Apple.  Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
All others are running Bill Gates stuff.
Even when I delete the "Friend Apple" E-mails his messages stay in the smart mailbox.
I deleted the other E-mails as I usually claen out once a week and get rid of junk and adds.  I deleted the other smart mailbox E-mails from my main mailbox figuring that they would stay in the smart box like the other one.
    Still perplexed,
Thanks for the help so far,
    Ron

  • Lost all my mailbox and smart mailbox folders when I had to reinstall Mail

My messages were garbled...a message from one person today was attached to a message from a completely different person sent weeks ago. Called Apple and we removed Mail and plist from the Finder Library. Now my new messages are fine. But I've lost all my Mailbox folders where I organized messages. Can't find the messages on the dotmac server either. Where are those messages? I need to find them.

Mailboxes and messages are located in ~/Library/Mail Check that folder to see if any folders are named for your accounts (e.g., [email protected]). Look in these folders if they contain any messages.
Alternatively, you can do a Spotlight search for a specific message that you know you had. In the Search results, right-click to Show in Finder. This may lead you to where all your other messages are.
Other than re-importing messages from within Mail.app, I don't know how you can restore everything including folder structures, etc. Perhaps someone else in this forum can give pointers. Re smart mailboxes, you can just recreate them once everything is back in.

  • Smart mailbox with two adjacent terms in message content

It seems that there may not be a way to create a smart mailbox that finds mails with "pumpkin pie" in the message but ignores mails that have messages like, for example, "I thought of making a pie when the pumpkin hit me."
    G4 933 mhz Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Wacom Intuos 2 tablet; Epson 2400 Photo; HP Deskjet 6840; LaCie 80gb D2 FWDV

That’s correct. Mail Help’s “Searching your email” article mentions some operators that can be used to combine words in queries, but there seems to be no way to specify a particular sequence of words. Note, however, that:
    1. Results can be sorted by relevance. The messages containing both words in sequence would appear at the top.
    2. If you don’t include the quotes in the query, selecting a message in the search results pane would cause the word sequence to be highlighted in the preview pane if the message contains it -- although you won’t see it if it’s not in the portion of the message that fits in the preview pane.
    3. Mail automatically puts the query in the appropriate field of the Find panel -- which you can open doing Edit > Find > Find (⌘F). This allows you to check whether a particular message contains the sequence by just doing Edit > Find > Find Next (⌘G) while viewing the message, without actually having to open the Find panel at all.
And FWIW, it isn’t possible to search for sequences of words in these forums either, which is a pain, but that’s another story...

  • Smart mailboxs does not show any content.

I have a 27" iMac, late 2009, running iOS 10.10.2.  None of my smart mailboxes show any content.  I have rebuilt my mail and checked the smart mailbox conditions.  I created a new smart mailbox, Unread, Delivered this week, and still no content.   Thanks,

Have you reindexed your mail by deleting these three Envelope files from the Users/Home/Mail/V2/MailData folder and rebooting?

  • All The Notes and All my personalized Mailboxes and Smart mailboxes have disappeared

When I woke up my MacBook Pro and wanted to check email, all The Notes and All my personalized Mailboxes and Smart mailboxes have disappeared.
I only have the standard mailboxes like inbox, sent, trash, etc...
    Anyone can help with this?
    Thanks
    Short background:
I have upgraded recently from Snow Leopard to Lion.
I have lost a lot of software (and had to re-purchase licences and re-install it) but then I have said to myself BE IT! great that I did not lose critical stuff.
I have also said that I will do the Time Machine back-up when everything is working fine....
Well, I think I was a bit too quick with my statement and too slow with the back-up...
    Mugur

You are not getting them from there, you just verifying if you have a back up with notes (you will have to check the date and try to remember if had those at that date and time.) Then you have two ways to go - the apple way and third party way.
1 Apple way - restore from back up (downside is you going to lose changes to your phone since the last back up)
be careful - not to overwrite last back up when you connect your phone, I would find and copy back up file just in case to external drive. You can find location of your actual back up file using that article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
if you expand where it says "where back ups are stored on the computer"
how to restore from itunes back up here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
    2. not Apple way.- there are programs for windows that allow you to look inside of actual back up file.
Google is your friend for that one.
If you don't like my results just adjust search to your liking.

  • All my Smart Mailboxes disappeared except a TODAY one. Is there a library file somewhere that may have been cleaned up?

I woke up this morning to find that all my Smart Mailboxes had fone. The generic TODAY was still there. I had severel hundred of them built up over the past few years of client emails.
All other Folders are still there ... just the Magic ones vanished.... Any thoughts!?

I am having this same issue, and it surfaced when I restarted my Mac. Mail starts up with the "Mail Upgrade" dialog ("Welcome to Mail, To use the new features in Mail...") which goes away quickly after clicking the continue button.
I am running Mavericks 10.9.2 on an Late 2012 iMac.
