Contents of one network folder won't display - spinning beach ball

I have an eMac on a network running 10.3.9 which, even though the user is properly authenticated on the network, it will not display the contents of one single folder. All the other folders' contents display perfectly and the user can interact with the server and its' contents without any problems. All the other users on the network can interact with the folder in question without any problems, which tends to lead me back to a problem on this one eMac.
The folder in question is inside the main share and all the other folders are as well. Again, the user can traverse the directory structure without any problems. She can use any file, read, write, save, change, delete any file without any problems in any folder EXCEPT in this one folder.
When the user tries to access the folder, the result is the perennial spinning beach ball.
I've tried all the usual tricks. Cache cleaning, directory repairs, permission rebuilds, prebinding rebuilds, log file maintenance, etc., etc. to no avail. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Have you tried logging in with any of the other user's credentials from her system?
Also, have you tried a different user account on her system. (With either her or anyone else's login info for the server.)

  • CS6 InDesign Won't Stop Spinning Beach Ball After Opening

My Mac was acting up tonight and it told me some InDesign-related files were damaged in the process. Now when I open InDesign or an InDesign file, I can’t do anything with the application because the beach ball keeps spinning after the application is launched and I have to force quit it. I tried deleting the preference file and uninstall InDesign and install it again and no luck.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I just uninstall and reinstall InDesign and saw this error report:

  • Spinning Beach Ball - Network Issue?

    Hi Folks,
I know there have been posts on this over time but my particular question does not appear to have been answered. My apologies if I missed a response somewhere else in the forums. I'll try to keep it short.
Basically, a month or so ago I started getting the spinning beach ball in any application at various points of time. There was no rhyme or reason it seemed. It could happen when I have one application open, 5 applications open, it could happen in 5 five minutes or 2 hours later. Once the beachball started spinning, it wouldn't go away and it prevented me from using other apps as well, compelling me to do a manual shut down. I typically use only iPhoto, Safari, iDvd, Numbers and Mail. It could happen in any of them.
I've tried everything. Apple tech support had me do an archive and install - didn't work. I got Disk Warrior 4.2. Nope. I deleted plug-ins and did some other maintenance tasks etc., etc. but nothing worked.
Activity Monitor didn't seem to show anything alarming. Same with Console. Apple suggested I bring it into a tech at the local Apple Store. I did that and after 4 days of running their diagnostics, they could not replicate the 'hang' on the applications. That is, they found no problems with the Macbook - hardware or software.
Now I'm wondering (not being a computer savvy person I don't know if this is possible) if this is a wireless internet issue. Could my home network be a source of the application 'hang' (spinning beach ball) that I've experienced? It's the only thing I can think of that is different from my home computer set-up to the store. My router/modem is a SMC Gateway.
Any thoughts are really appreciated. Thanks so much for your brains on this!

  • Help - spinning beach ball w/one minute of Leopard install left on G5.

I just tried installing Leopard (10.5.4) on my G5 single with "archive and install". It worked fine until the end, where I got a message saying that the installation was almost complete - a minute left. After about 10 minutes, I clicked on the "utilities" menu in the menu bar and suddenly got a spinning beach ball. The progress bar stopped moving at the same time. The situation remained the same for over an hour before I shut down my G5.
I rebooted without the install DVD and got an intro video and then Migration Manager kicked in. The video and Migration Manager continued recycling if anything besides migrating system and network prefs. I went for that as I thought that the other bits could probably be transfered later. I got the following error message:
"Networking settings could not be transferred correctly"
I booted into the system. Looong boot up with a yellowish-white screen, then a black one and then finally I got a prompt to set settings, register, etc. Access to the Internet through my router worked, I also suddenly got a prompt that updates to the system were available. I decided things couldn't get that much worse, so I updated to 10.5.5. The system rebooted and things still seem to be working, though I still think the system boot is long compared to Tiger.
Looking at the bright side, I have what seems to be a working system. I also have a folder on the drive labeled "previous system". What do I do now?
    1) Should I boot from the install DVD and run Disk Utility to check disk is OK and permissions are fine?
    2) How do I get all of my user stuff, apps, preferences registration keys, etc. (particularly my Mail prefs, mailboxes, accounts, etc.) transfered from the "previous system"?
    3) Can I just move the OS 9 stuff that was with Tiger to the trash?
I waited as long as I did to upgrade to Leopard, to make sure that Apple had sussed out the upgrade procedure. This obviously still isn't the case.
    Cheers

You can get your stuff back from Previous System, you will find your old system inside stamped by date and time of the installation, inside Users folder you will find your old home folder name which contains all your things like Desktop, Documents, Library, Music, Movies and Public
Just copy and paste things from your home folder to your new home folder and that applies to your Library folder which stores all your settings, preferences and things like Mail, Contacts, keychain passwords. But be careful because if you copy any problematic file, it will probably cause problems.
If you want for example to copy all your mails, copy the Mail (messages) and Mail Downloads (attachments) folders from your old Library folder to your new Library folder, then in order to copy your Mail Accounts settings and the Mail application preferences, copy a file named com.apple.mail.plist from your old /Library/Preferences to the same exact location in your new system and so on, your contacts are inside /Library/Application Support/Address Book and your safari bookmarks are inside /Library/Safari but if it's FireFox, it's inside /Library/Application Support/FireFox
    hope that helps

  • Safari won't open... spinning beach ball

Out of the blue this morning, Safari won't open. I click it, the icon bounces, and then I get the spinning beach ball. If I go to the Force Quit Applications window, it says it's not responding. Any ideas what may be causing this and how to fix it?
    -B

What is the exact wording of the message you see, and what are you doing when you see it?
These are the steps I took this morning, again, along with the wording.  Before these steps, I logged into my account through the Google browser, and verified that I had a purchase in October of OS X Lion:
1 - booted computer under recovery.
2 - Disk Utility - Repair Disk  (Result: The Volume New Macbook appears to be okay)
3 - Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions - (Result:0 Repaired - Permissions Repair Complete)
4 - Reinstall Mac OS - "Your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple - OK
5 - "To Continue, you must agree to the terms and conditions" - Agree
    6 - Select New Macbook - Install
7 - signing into Apple Store  (Result: This Apple ID has not purchased Lion)
8 - rebooted and tried to launch App Store - back to spinning beach balls, along with all other internet apps; Safari, Mail, App Store, iTunes, etc.
Aps not affected: Google Chrome, Outlook (as long as I don't click on an email connected to an HTTPS server) and anything not on the internet.
I hope this helps and thank you for your advice.  I wish I could use my Snow Leopard disks; my dvd drive is broken.

  • Project won't load! Spinning beach ball at opening screen.

So my project is multi-camera, has all externally synced audio, and about 45 min of footage in current timeline. When I created the project, and edited the elements within, all worked fine. But now when I try to reopen the project, I get the spinning beach ball hanging at the opening screen for hours. It just shows "loading project into timeline" forever. It just doesn't want to open. Anyone run into these problems before??

  • Spinning Beach Ball/ Indexing Won't Complete

I turned on my Mac one morning, and as I opened programs, webpages ect. the spinning beach ball would appear, and my Mac would be momentarily frozen. This happened out of no where. I then noticed that the Spotlight indexing had not completed, and would remain at the same completion rate. Would this have anything to do with my Mac constantly freezing up(spinning beach ball), and if so, what can I do to fix it?

    Hi,
As the problem of spinning beach ball is very general and board, see http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html for general troubleshooting.
Cheers and welcome to the discussions.

  • 27 ", late 2010, iMac won't boot after turning on. Spinning beach ball and white screen.

Probably a relatively simple fix, or series of steps, that will return it to normal.

    BD,
It's been a while, but I have since upgraded RAM to 12Gb and gone to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything has run well until recently. Time Machine will not function on a new Seagate, 1TB GoFlex external HD,even though it was properly formatted and HFS journaled. Seagate techs said it seems to be a failing drive, yet it works perfectly on my laptop, a 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion.  The drive completes less than 10% of the backup before it locks everything up on the iMac with the spinning beach ball and a gray screen.  Left it that way for two days and no change.  Removed the drive physically and the iMac works just fine. I am baffled and really a bit frustrated here and wonder if you, or anyone else, has an idea about correcting this? I am suspecting that there is something deeper in the system going on than I am seeing.
I have run a verification of Disc Permissions/Repairs and keep getting this coming up:  "Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x ."
That keeps coming up every time and is not fixed.  I don't know if that has anything to do with that.
    Baffled...

  • Single Project Won't Load - Eternal Beach Ball - File too large?

I had just finished putting in the last still image in a project in iMovie last night when all of a sudden, my whole computer crashed. Another friend had been working on the same project on my machine and had mentioned that occasionally iMovie would randomly glitch but she didn't mention any crashes.
Now when I try to get to that particular project, I get the beach ball and it never goes away. I eventually force-quit the program.
I've cleared preferences files (which allowed me to load videos again, at first it was just sitting in this suspended state of "loading" but would never do anything) and deleted old movies and projects. This is the ONLY project that won't open.
I have 42.16GB available on my HD so I don't think space is an issue. (I could be wrong.) Again, I had just finished the project when everything went wrong.
I have searched the forums for answers and nothing seems to really match my issue. I've tried their suggestions anyway but nothing seems to be helping. (The deleting of preference files did solve the issue of nothing loading, however.)
I tried to copy the project file onto a disc so that I could maybe switch machines but that proved ineffective.
    Help?

In searching other forums, I've seen a plethora of ideas but no real common thread. Someone said that trashing things before a movie is done will corrupt it. I don't believe I initially trashed anythinng necessary for the movie but now I have. Is all hope now lost?

  • Items in iTunes Media folder won't display in iTunes

    Hi there
I just had to restore my Windows 7 PC. The iTunes Media folder has been located on an external drive (iTunes media folder location: G:\iTunes Media) and remained untouched. After restoring the PC and downloading iTunes (current version was on the computer before) I changed the iTunes Media location (in Advanced Preferences) again to G:\iTunes Media and logged in with my apple ID.
Thanks to iTunes Match, my Music is displayed in iTunes. However, all other files such as iTunesU data or iPhone and iPad Apps will not display in iTunes (although they are all right where they were before, in the indicated folder location).
Owing to a couple of print screens I took of my settings before the restore of the PC, I was able to set everything exactly the way it was in the Advanced tab of the Preferences window.
Thank you very much for any hints or advice.
    Simon

Do you only have media on the external (which by the way is not a "library" because it is lacking many parts of a complete library), or do you have a complete iTunes folder with library files and support folders (a true library)?
If only media and you have both drives connected you need consolidate/organize media from one drive to the other.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507 - more information at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22026652#22026652 - and steps 5-8 in https://discussions.apple.com/message/24491967#24491967
If you have your entire library on the external drive, copy the iTunes folder from one drive to the other.  Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the relocated iTunes folder on the new drive.

  • Solution for Windows 7 all-in-one network printer won't print

It took all morning to resolve an issue that came up with my HP printer not printing today after working fine for 2 1/2 months. The problem was that the printer would queue the job, but then I would get a print error. The printer started out as offline, and it showed ready after I downloaded the HP troubleshooting utility, which said that everthing was fine, even it it wasn't.  I tried every solution out there, including reinstalling drivers and restarting the printer, computer and router several times and unchecking boxes.  I finally googled the exact error message I got (you have to type next several times after the "Windows can't fix this problem" message to get it.  It said something about the printer not being able to find the network - unfortunately I didn't copy the exact wording. This finally got me to a website that suggested that Norton security would be the problem.  My computer is new, and it is running Window 7 Professional 64-bit and Norton hasn't been a problem so far on it (though I heard horror stories that Norton can cause a lot of problems in the past).  The instructions said to reset the Norton internet firewall to the default settings, restart the printer, and thankfully everything was back in business.  I don't know why everything was working fine one day, and then suddenly the next morning it isn't working.  I hope that others with the same problem will find this solution can help them.

    Hi FGG,
I understand you're missing a driver for your Officejet Pro 8500 printer. I'd be happy to help you with this!
If you click here you can download the full software package for your printer, including the drivers. Just click next when the page loads (it should be able to detect your operating system) and then scroll down to where it says Driver - Product Installation Software, and proceed to download the HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver. I recommend saving it to your computer to make things easier as well.
If this was not what you're looking for please let me know more specifically what the issue is.
Hope this helps, have a great day!

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death in Sountrack Pro/Logic/iTunes-one solution

I fired up the MacPro this morning to finish an audio project started yesterday. Soundtrack Pro was essentially unresponsive. I got the SBBoD after every action and the material would not play. The project originated in Logic so I tried that - with the same SBBoD result. I opened up both iTunes and QT Player and tried to play a selection - again with the same SBBoD result.
Other programs - Safari, Text edit and non- A/V media programs worked fine.
First attempt at a solution - simple reboot. It did not fix it.
2nd attempt - run DiskWarrior on all media drives. Did not fix it.
I open up Activity Monitor and look for strange things hogging the CPU. Nothing there.
Now I'm worried. Has QT gone kaboom? What would have caused QT to go south when it was working fine yesterday. How do I reinstall it? But why would just QT go bad?
Because I really don't want to start mucking about with system components, I start thinking- beyond QT, what else does audio playback on my system have in common?
Well, the audio output from all these programs goes through my Mackie firewire mixer - and I left it on last night.
For grins, I turned off the mixer and computer, unplugged the mixer's firewire cable from the computer as well as the fw800 drives used for backup and went to have another cup of coffee.
15 minutes later, I plug everything back in, turn on the mixer then the computer and everything works normally.
Hope this helps someone in a similar situation.
    x

    Thanks for that.
I've had something similar but at a more root level. I have a very nice G-Tech mini raid. One of the new ones that's eSata/firewire 800/400/USB. Really nice little unit that I cart around. But sometimes, when I have it plugged in and I power up the MacBook Pro, the computer hangs at the gray screen right after posting. I'm sitting here waiting and nothing happens. Well, not until I unplug the drive and then I get her started.
    Add that to the list.

  • ITunes 8 won't recognize my ipod Classic 80GB (Spinning Beach Ball)

I recently upgraded my iMac G5 to 10.5.5 and iTunes 8. When the first time I synced my iPod Classic after the upgrade, it erased everything on my iPod. Now when I start-up iTunes it works fine, however as soon as I connect my iPod I get the spinning beach ball and iTunes freezes. Sometimes if I leave it connected long enough (at least 15 minutes), it's recognized by iTunes and iTunes asks me to restore the iPod. I have done that, but once the restore is complete iTunes still does not recognize my iPod.
In order to get out of iTunes I need to force quit it. A couple of other things to note. My iMac recognizes and mounts my iPod without any problems, as does Disk Utility. I have performed multiple resets of my iPod, repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and even tried reinstalling iTunes 8.
Apparently a similar problem happened with iTunes 7.7, but I haven't read anything regarding this problem and iTunes 8. Has this happened to anybody else? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Ali Y.,
Have you tested this issue in a different Mac OS X user account? To do so, click on the apple (top left), choose System Preferences and then open Accounts. You will probably have to click on the padlock in the lower left and enter your admin password, then click on the "+" symbol to add an account. Once created, just log out of your current account completely (option also under the apple) and then click on the test account to log into it.
This would be useful in identifying if the issue is with the iPod itself, or maybe file in your original user account that needs to be recreated.
    Hope this helps,
    Raleigh

  • Spinning beach ball won't force quit

Having problems today and yesterday regarding spinning beach ball and inability to force quit. Resort to power button restart.
Both times I was online using Safari browser. Now temporarily using Firefox just to see if this happens again or not. Meanwhile wondering if it is safari or possibly because I've had iwork 09 opened while browsing.
Just as a test while the ball was spinning, unplugged my server connections, then plugged back in. But this wasn't the issue.
In addition, checked preferences when this happened tonight.
Below are the plist files that may reference some help:
    com.apple.pushserviced.plist
    com.apple.BezelServices.plist
    com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Perhaps no concern with the plist files, but would like any feedback.
    Thank you.

I  probably accidentally hit 10.7.2 in my profile here because when I came to forums it was showing this system. Confused at seeing this, I thought it was some sort of klitch.
So when I went to see what the heck was actually going on in my comptuer, to my surprise saw that it was actually Lion 10.7.4 operating system. Please you've got to believe me, it was not reading this previously... snow leopard 10.6.7 or whatever the latest software update had done previously before this strange thing happened.
I have never installed Lion on this computer. I don't even have a disk for Lion. Perhaps the apple tech person a year ago installed it then installed the snow leopard. I have my snow leopard DVD.
Just baffled. Again this machine has been running on Snow Leopard for nearly a year now. Perhaps when I was forced to do a button power shut down, something happened. BTW, had to do this scenario twice in the last two days. Checked my disk utility shows things are ok.
