Contents Table in InDesign

Hi All,
I am creating a auto contents table in indesign, I have got it so it gives me the list I want, the problem is styling it, the problem I am having is I can't get the titles in the contents to change there style automatically, at the moment they are the same style that are in the magazine, so my contents is all in a large font size which Isn't good.
Any ideas?

>just got to work out how to get the numbers aligned on the right now...
Set a right-aligned tab as part of the TOC paragraph style. If you are likely to change the column width, you can use Find/Change to change the right-aligned tab to a right indent tab when you're done, and the numbers will move with the width of the frame.

• Why can't I update a table of contents in Windows InDesign CS 5.5?

I have clicked in a table of contents frame, but on my layout menu, "udpate table of contents" is grayed out.
I have "moved" my table of contents from an InDesign doc I created weeks ago into a new doc. I can update it in the old doc, but when it's copied into the new doc, the update option is no longer available.
Why can't I updated it once it's in another doc so I can use its TOC styles & layouts rather than having to redefine those all over again?
Thanks!

Loading the TOC style gave me the fonts I wanted, but not the dots & the page numbers that were in the doc from which I loaded the styles. My TOC has no page numbers now, but I do like the font.
Is there a trick to getting the page number display with the dots to show up?

• [CS3][VBS]Converting a CALS table to Indesign table in XML

Hi!

I have an xml-file with tables that I want to import into Indesign. It works fine when I use the Import CALS tables as Indesign tables in "Import options", but the problem is when I do this some emphasis elements inside the "entry" elements isn't found when I try to use XMLRules to format the emphasis elements in the document...
The structure of the table can be like this (in general):
Tabell
table
tblgrp
tbody
row

Some text...<emp Type = "bold">bold text</emp>

Some text

some text

row
tbody
tblgrp
table
Tabell

When I import the Table as CALS tables to Indesign tables, the table structure is collapsed into just a <Tabell> element. I assume this is the reason why the <emp> element isn't found.

I try to solve this by NOT importing CALS tables to Indesign tables. I see then that the whole table structure is intact in the structure panel and the <emp> elements are also found by the XMLRules, but the contents is not put inside a table in the indesign document. To put the table elements into a table in Indesign I use the Command: "ConvertElementToTable" but this doesnt work very well. I use it in XMLRules like this:

Public Property Get xpath()
xpath = "//Tabell"
End Property

Public Function apply(myXMLElement, myRuleProcessor)
With myXMLElement
.ConvertElementToTable "row", "entry"
End With
apply = False
End Function

Does anyone have any experience of importing XML-tables in Indesign and formatting them? I could really need some to put the xml table into Indesign tables...Please help!

In advance thanks!

Hi!
Just check the checkbox "Import CALS tables as Indesign tables" in the XML import options dialogbox. Then it should go automatically.
The problem with this approach is that the entire table structure is collapsed to a single table element in the struture. If one want to do some xml-prosessing at row or cell level one need to to this outside indesign or not import CALS as Indesign tables. The big question is if there is some easy way to convert a CALS table to an Indesign table inside Indesign after one have imported the data and prosessed the row and cell elements...
Hope anyone knows more than me about this....
Anyway, mkarthic, I hope my answer helped you to import your CALS tables!:-)

Hello,
Thanks.
Yes, that worked fine. But the small XML file below, containing some titles and a table, does not work. I assumed that I could drag and drop the <informaltable> element onto the page and get a rendered table.

• Workflow for exporting xml from Excel and importing into table in InDesign

Hello,
I have worked out how to get data from a .xlsx into a table in InDesign. However, the workflow is still a little clunky and I am looking for way to automate the process further. My current workflow is as follows (files can be download here: http://visual360.co.uk/xml.zip)
xml is exported from .xlsx by mapping the schema (see what_I_get.xml)
assign tags to table and individual cells in InDesign
This is the clunky bit: edit the what_I_get.xml to:
remove the indentation (this seems necessary as otherwise when I get to stage 4, all the imported text is also indented)
add tag for table in InDesign (p10_table)
add tags for individual cells (p10_c11 etc.)
import the produced what_I_want.xml in the structure panel of InDesign.
Can anyone point me in the direction of how to automate step 3 above?
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Hi Mike,
Thanks very much for the reply. I am not at all familiar with XSL/XSLT. I have given it a quick google and it seems like it could be quite a steep learning curve to master. Maybe if I explain the whole context here, it may allow you to point me in the direction of a tutorial that provides a step by step approach to achieve my final goal. Alternatively, you may be able to suggest a whole new workflow.
I am in the process of updating this document: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/students/insessional/assets/documents/IS_Brochure_2014-15.pdf
The tables on pages 10-21 contain lots and lots of repeated information. We want the layout to in this format so that each group of students has all the information relevant to them on a single double spread. However, the challenge of using this approach is that it is very high maintenance to ensure the duplicated information is kept in sync - even using a copy / paste approach.
I was hoping to overcome this by using a single source of data (eg. a spreadsheet) which would then feed into the InDesign. This workflow seems to be overcomplicated by the apparent need to use xml as the "middle-man".
Ideally, I would like to press the export button in Excel and get this information into the the correct cells in the tables on pages 10-21 without a significant amount of manual labour - after all, my reasons for investigating an automated approach in the first place was to avoid the manual entering of data ie. the scope for error...
An alternative approach maybe to skip Excel altogether and just use .xml. However, I am not sure that this is possible as Indesign only seems to allow you to import each element once. Maybe you could correct me here...
I am happy to invest a certain amount of time in developing this approach as once it is in place, it will save a huge of proof-reading time year after year, especially as inconsistencies still persist despite our best efforts to weed them out.
If you could let me know your thoughts on this and maybe identify a tutorial that would help me, I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks again!

• Exporting Table from Indesign to tagged text.

Hi, all!
I need to export table from InDesign to tagged text by the script.
I found ExportAllStories.jsx in samples.
It's good example but I have some questions
1. In my document more then one table and I need to export only some of them. So, how can I export only one of them? May be Tables have some "labels" or something other differential sign?
2. How can I ser encoding type of distanation file (by the default InDesing set <ASCII-WIN>, but I'm need to set <Unicode>).

• How to place multiple column tables in InDesign Layout by importing from XML

Hi,

• Bullet problem when creating text frames and tables in InDesign CS5

Every time I create a new text frame or table in InDesign CS5 and paste information there, the first row in the table or several lines of text come out with bullet points. I'm sure this is a setting or style at some point I created and now am unsure of how to delete. I would like the new text frames and tables to not include bullet points as a default when imported or pasted. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Defaults for text in the current document are made with no text selected. Turn off bullets and they should stay off (but check the styles, too, you might have accidentally set a bulleted style as the defualt and you should change the default style instead). If this is happening in all files, you need to do it with nothing open to reset the default for all new documents (existing files, unfortunately, need to be fixed one at a time).

• Finding then combining content from several indesign documents in one document

Hi everyone,
I wonder if someone can help...
I'm trying to write scripts for indesign server which I want to:
a) search for,
b) pick out, then
c) put together content from one or many indesign documents into a template on the server starting at a pre-defined point in the template.
After that we produce a pdf of the document to pass on / do whatever. I've got so far with the scripting documentation but I'm stuck! This is what I've done so far:
1/ create a document template with a script
2/ add text elements to the document template (header and footnote, title, body text i.e. intro and data, and the contact details)
3/ add text / content from another indesign file into this document (so far only done it with a .txt file) ...
... I'm stuck on the indesign documents at the moment. I have looked at various options, the most appropriate way I can see in the manuals to get content from one document to another is by duplicating. My understanding is to do this you have to target the text in the source document, duplicate it and then add it into a text frame on the target document. It's the targettting of the text and surrounding elements in the source document I'm battling with.
any ideas on how I go about this effectively?

The story so far...

(I am using a fixed value as an insert point as the template I'm using will always have inserts starting on page 3).

• Place the links(Pictures and Excel table) to Indesign

Dear All,
We need place some Microsoft Word files into Indesign. and in the word files, contain some link for pictures, Microsoft excel tables. and we need use the C++ to build a InDesign add-in to do the following things( Indesign CS5, Windows 7, VS2008):
Place the word files into InDesign
Find and automatically insert the pictures link files into Indesign
Find and automatically insert the Microsoft Excel table into Indesign.
My Questions are:
Does Indesign CS5 SDK provide those APIs?
Can we build a standalone application to do those jobs?
if C++ can't do this, what kinds of Development tools can do those jobs.
Great thanks for any inputs.
My Best Regards,
Jerome

Hi Pudgesan,
You can paste data from an Excel spreadsheet into an InDesign or document. The Clipboard Handling preference settings determine how text pasted from another application is formatted.
If Text Only is selected, the information appears as unformatted tabbed text, which you can then convert to a table.
If All Information is selected, the pasted text appears in a formatted table.
If you want more control over formatting the imported table, or if you want to maintain spreadsheet formatting, use the Place command to import the table. If you want to maintain a link to the spreadsheet, select the Create Links When Placing Text And Spreadsheet Files option in File Handling preference settings.
Hope this helps.

• Is it possible to import xml into Adobe Muse to populate content similar to InDesign?

Is it possible to import xml into Adobe Muse to populate content similar to InDesign?

The only way I see this would be possible is through using JS that you can insert using the Object -> Insert HTML option, you may grab the XML to HTML code from here - http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_to_html.asp
In order to test this out, simply download the sample XML file from the following location - http://www.w3schools.com/xml/cd_catalog.xml and save it somewhere locally. Now add this file to your Muse project using File -> Add Files for Upload option, it would then appear within the Assets panel.
Add the code to your page and update the path referencing the file cd_catalog.xml to assets/cd_catalog.xml. Now on previewing the page in browser, you should see the populated HTML from the XML.

• A script that can be used to track text content changes in indesign?

Is there a possibility a script that can be used to track text content changes in indesign. My Indesign software's version is CS3. As you can see below, I have deleted some texts and added some. I did it in another software.
I have been searched for a long time. Because of my poor English, I still can't come up with any Object Model related to the script yet.
Here is some idea of mine:
Use the script tracking my revising texts. When I add some new texts, the texts will be underlined. When I delete some texts, the position of the first character of the removed text will be added a small red triangle or something.
Thanks in advance.

Hidden dragon, what does that mean?
I can't comprehend fully what you said.
Is IDML short for Indeisgn Markup Language?
I think you are telling me that I can open the Indeisgn document by using the software InCopy. Then I have change some contents. InCopy will help me tracking the revision.

• Adding rows to linked Excel tables in InDesign

Hi there, I have figured out how to link Excel documents to tables in InDesign, but is there a way to add additional rows to the tables in InDesign? If I do that, whenever the Excel link is updated, it deletes the new rows I've added.
We have data that goes in the cells below the linked table and it needs to be in the table so that they'll resize automatically when longer or shorter data is pulled in (vs. just being a totally separate text box/table outside of the linked one).
Help!

Hi, yes, I did add blank rows but the difficulty is that for each instance (20+) the cells below vary, and are also "tagged" with variable data tags (so it brings in outside data via an xml feed) so that's only done in InDesign and not in excel... Therein lies my dilemma. Ideally if I could be "free" about what text, cells, etc. I can put in below the linked cells, that'd be lovely.

• Creating PDFs from PowerPoint Tables that InDesign Can Handle

Hi - I just posted the question below on the InDesign forum, but I think it may actually be a Microsoft-Adobe-pdf issue. Any help is much appreciated.
Hi All, this is my first post on the Adobe Community. I problem cropped up in the last week and i am going crazy. Please help!! I am running on a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.
I have been using a workflow to create tables in InDesign for months with no issues:
1. Calculate a complex table in Excel
2. Paste the table into PowerPoint for formatting
3. Copy the table in PowerPoint, then paste it back as a pdf image
4. Option-click on the pdf image on the slide to save it as a pdf file
5. Go to a frame InDesign that already has a linked image, re-link to the new pdf file.
This workflow has been very helpful because I have a lot of complex and carfully formatted tables I need to get into InDesign. Now, since upgrading both my Microsoft Office 2011 and my Adobe CS6 SW it not working.
I can copy, paste-as-pdf, save the pdf file. But when I try to link to it in InDesign it get the message "Failed to open the pdf file."
I can still link to older pdf files with no problem, and I can use this work flow on text-only pdf files from PowerPoint. The pdf files that contain tables are not linking into InDesign. I have tried to do the past-as-pdf into Microsoft Word and the behavior is the same.
All the pdf files look fine in Acrobat.
Thank you very much for any assistance.
-Cecelia

It's a matter of efficiency as much as anything else. I read too many
reports here of people having problems printing previewing or working
with PDFs and it often comes back to preview.
It's fine for JPGs but PDFs? No, especially those generated by InDesign.
Why open them in preview only to find a problem when Reader or Acrobat
are far better applications? It just seems horribly inefficient to have
preview set as the default for PDFs only to find an problem and then
have to quit preview and open Reader or Acrobat.
