[CONTEST] Gnome 2.20 Wallpapers!

Hi this topic is to advice you that we are recruiting people to design wallpapers for gnome 2.20.
You can place your wallpapers here:
http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=21
Talented people, as karmapolice , are appreciated
Requirements:
1) Transparent Wallpapers (High res > 1280x1024, NOT widescreen)
2) Abstract/Simple/Minimalistic style (as OsX/Vista guidelines but with an ORIGINAL style)
3) Be Original, Vista/OSx look-a-like can't be a gnome wallpaper of course
4) Use gnome logo if you want, but it has to look well with the rest of the background
5) It has to look good with Gummy clearlooks style... and another one with Glossy!
Obviusly the more it is original and gnomish the more it will be considered!
If you have any question, if you don't know what is "Gummy" or "Glossy" ask here.
Post also draft if you want to have a feedback!!!

Hi cimi,
Instead of using transparent png's how about having SVG that can pickup gtk colours?
You could have gtkrc like syntax something like:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<svg
xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
xmlns:cc="http://web.resource.org/cc/"
gnome-desktop:recolor="#ff0000:bg[SELECTED],#00ff00:shade(1.2,bg[NORMAL)">
then any #ff0000 would change to bg[SELECTED] and #00ff00 would change to a
lighter bg[NORMAL].
isn't it _SLOW_?

    new unstable patches for gnome... i think this only works for git but i am not sure...
    if anyone is up for the job i cant thank him enough...

    This behaviour is the same in my box but I don't think it's an arch bug but an upstream issue (its not a bug formally speaking)... maybe it should be reported to the gnome-documents team in order they do more polish to it.

    Hello everyone,
    Here is my submission for the contest with 7 wallpapers (I know it's a lot... but I was inspired so... ^^ )
    For the 2 first ones, I wanted some classic good looking wallpapers with the MSI Dragon being the center of it, with some high quality effects. So here they are, a bright version and a dark one.
    Hope you guys like it.
    For the 5 next ones, I tried something really different. More in an advertising campaign way. Some minimalist looking wallpapers, trying to focus on simple things, no shadow effect. Art on it's purest form, simple but well thought.
    I asked myself why people would chose MSI instead of another brand, so I figured the people who already know that. So I first started with the "Gamers know why" because it's obvious, then went to an iconic e-sport legend ("Legends Know Why") Mr. Patrik 'cArn' Sättermon, I think he and the Fnatic team clearly represent why people should chose MSI. So I used the Fnatic team for the third one "Winners know why", they are clearly one of the best multigaming team of the world and are sponsored by MSI for quite a few years now. (The picture is from the IEM 5 For the 4th one, I noticed that I start to see more and more MSI laptops around me, at college etc, so I thought that "The World knows why". And for the last one I tried to represent the spirit around the MSI Dragon and the whole Gaming part of MSI, that feeling of POWER. So I tried to make that last one a combination of the 2 styles. Representing the Power coming out of the Dragon... in a minimalist way. So here's "Unleash the Dragon". I hope I succeed. And I really hope you like my work. It took me several hours to complete that "campaign" and I'm really proud of it. I used the "#" system in it because as I made it as an advertising campaign, I thought it would be nice if everyone could share that spirit easily.
    The picture of cArn and the one of the Fnatic team are from the internet, the rest comes from my personal pictures (textures and such) and of course everything is homemade.
    Cheers.

  • The xfce-4.4 themes contest discussion

    As stated on http://blog.archlinux.org I posted the files for the contest on my server: http://arch.justdreams.net/xfce44-themings.tar.gz
    I recommend to either fetch shadowhands xfce4-svn packages or the set I offer here http://arch.justdreams.net/xfce4-pkgs/
    I use it already for daily use and didn't encounter serious problems.
    The things you should consider if you like to add an entry.
    · a usable, nice WM theme not too small and not too large, fitting for users from laptop sized screens to dual widescreen setups.
    · a background image, that doesn't steal focus from work (read: no strong contrast, everything in like colors, makes it possible to use (semi)-transparent terminals, scales well over several desktop sizes, also fits on non 4:3 screens)
    · a nice gtk-theme using gtk-xfce-engine (read: come with corporate colors, don't waste space but have usable handles) gtk-xfce-engine stays part of 4.4 (there were discussions to ditch the gtk-xfce-engine in favor of gtk's new standard engine clearlooks)
    · a nice splashscreen theme (no real reglementations apart from colors)
    for xfwm4 themes you wanna read http://www.xfce.org/xfwm4-theme-howto/
    Xfwm-4.4 has some new features:
    - you can use svg instead of png files (check: http://foo-projects.org/pipermail/xfce4 … 21447.html for some details)
    - you can replace the menu button by adding "show_app_icon=true" in themerc
    The files you find in my tarball reflect the way I was working:
    - create the design
    - split design into the shape parts (provided by the xpm picturesthat can actually pick up gtk colours) and the shade parts(transparent pictures on top of xpms either png or svg)
    - build the actual buttons (shape, colour etc)
    - I exported the xpm from gimp and used a whole bunch of sed lines to flip colours to get the pressed and -active state (se the shell script in te directory for details)
    The background image isn't tricky.
    I added my gtkrc file in the tarball. It was mainly created from studying other gtkrc files since I didn't find some serious documentation on it.
    The splashscreen is pretty much straight forward. I added a .blend file for a rendered Arch symbol. You don't have to use it. The old theme used the balou engine - you can use any other or write your own. Doesn't matter.
    XFCE-4.4 is at rc1 at the moment. I think it's gonna take another month b4 it hits the final. After that we will have a poll at the forum to figure which theme the users like best.

    Yeah thanks! I think you can redraw buttons in rezlooks and use my function with CL_CORNER_NONE to get better look with squared theme.
    Anyway what have you *stealed* from my works? yes i like that someone appreciate my works but it's always not fun thinking you've worked for days and someone *copy* your code. I hope this *steals* are originals since that could be an improvement not a simple copy! My engines are based on rezlooks/clearlooks but i've done a lot of original work for them!
    "God bless opensource" as you said, I totally agree, expecially it the ways it comes with original things and not copies!
    Hehehe, by "stealing", I only mean stuff like using that function to draw rectangles instead of just cairo_rectangle, stuff that you suggested anyway... most of the original stuff you do for Murrine would be wrong for Rezlooks anyway.
    Yeah, I'll chat to you on IRC sometime soon, we can discuss some things. I've been very busy with real life recently, haven't had a chance to do any work on Rezlooks for a while, I am still planning on releasing 0.7 at some point though... And yeah, that collaborative engine we talked about will be awesome
    Ok I just want to focus that murrine_rounded_rectangle has to be rewrite for with the next release of cairo (1.4.0) that will be released the next month will have a great performance improvement where lines are drawn aligned. In the current cairo version there's a bug in cairo_stroke which is twice slow than cairo_fill, so unless you fill the stroke of unaligned lines appears slow as aligned ones.
    With next cairo release the "stroke bug" will be fixed and we'll have to rewrite function to get the new performance boost.
    I had found occasionaly this bug yesterday when i was stripping down murrine toghether with benzea and thos, gnome developers.
    If you see in the gnome cvs you'll find new fixing in a lot of engines that get twice as fast by implementing cairo_fill instead of cairo_stroke, waiting new cairo release for reverting it back...

  • GNOME Desktop Too Bare!

    I love Arch and I love GNOME.  The problem is - the default GNOME desktop that comes with Arch is EXTREMELY BARE!  Even after I change the wallpaper and add some new icons.  It just feels so empty.  Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can fix things up?

    Wallpapers:
    (install downloadthemall firefox extension. open all pics in new tabs, when you're done the click address bar, then downloadthemall from menu. this way you get them all in one click)
    http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/wallpaper/
    GTK engine + gtkrc:
    (from repos, searc with pacman)
    murrine, rezlooks
    Icons and window borders (aka "metacity themes"):
    (install by dragging tar.gz packs to theme preferences window, save your favourites to disk until next installation)
    www.gnome-look.org (sort by highest rating)
    Cursor themes:
    (from repos, searc with pacman. These are the default cursors in ubuntu btw.)
    xcursor-vanilla-dmz, xcursor-vanilla-dmz-aa
    Conky is fun too, if you're into that sort of thing. It can be a bit tricky to use alongside a gnome/kde "root window" (desktop) though...
    I myself installed xcompmgr and avant-window-navigator a while ago. fun stuff. pretty too.
    You could also design your own panels backgrounds with "the gimp". curved or "glossy" panels is fun to experiment with

  • [Solved] Multiple wallpapers on MATE with Compiz

    Hi.
    I wanted to make MATE work with Compiz so it would let me have multiple wallpapers with the Wallpapers feature in ccsm. When I set the settings in ccdm, it doesn't work.
    I googled it, and although it showed me a few settings I should change in the configuration editor, it did nothing.
    What should I do so I can make it work?
    EDIT: solved. Basically, I removed nautilus (I don't want to use it anymore) -- it was also conflicting with caja, and set the show_desktop in apps/caja/preferences to false.
    Note: setting the show_desktop to false will mean removing icons from desktop. I don't know how to put them back up, but I will look it up later.

    Ah, of course, Nautilus was managing the desktop. You can turn that off from Nautilus in its preferences so you can still use it as the file manager (if I remember right). Well that's how it worked with Gnome 2 anyway. BTW, isn't Caja their name for Nautilus, so the same thing?
    As for icons, I don't use or want those on my desktop so I've never looked into a replacement functionality but this might be something you have to give up to have Compiz manage the wallpapers.
    p.s. If you're looking for an amazing file manager then check out SpaceFM.
    It's just a file manager, right?
    I'm looking at it right now, it looks amazing.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.6 Background Pictures folder

    Hey guys,
    Like many of you I just upgraded to Gnome 3.6. After upgrade I am experiancing some rather strange behavior, that I was hoping someone would be able to help me figure out.  It is probably embarssingly simple.
    When I go into settings and go to "Background" to change my desktop background I am given a little GUI with four options at the top, "Wallpaper", "Pictures", "Colors", "Flickr".
    Under the "Pictures" option, I see images that I have, at one time or another, used as wallpapers on this computer, but many of them I no longer even have the source files for. I also see no way to add new Picutres to this menu as new potiential backgrounds.  I thought that perhaps the "Pictures" menu was going to pull data from the Pictures folder in my home directory, but alas, it does not.
    So my questions are, how do I add new backgrounds in gnome 3.6?  Why is gnome 3.6 not reading images from my Pictures folder?  And where are these copies of images that I already deleted being stored?
    I did run
    $ sudo find / -type f -name *.jpg -print
    and I can't find anything on my system that would be a copy of these old images.  The sources were jpgs.
    Thanks for the help,
    David

    My apologies for the slight necro-bump but I did a little digging in the wiki and found this very helpful piece of info:
    For any users that don't have any of the default folders such as Pictures, Downloads, etc, you can install and run:
    pacman -S xdg-user-dirs
    xdg-user-dirs-update
    everything in the Gnome places menu will be sorted and putting pictures in the 'Pictures' folder works!

  • Many startup programs in Gnome 2.24 Session preferences

    I see quite a few new startup programs in the new Gnome Session preferences.
    1. AT SPI Registry Wrapper ( what does this do?)
    2. Gnome Keyring Daemon wrapper.
    3. Gnome Settings Daemon
    4. Gnome Settings Daemon helper
    Which of these can be safely removed or disabled?
    I disabled Gnome Login sound and Remote Desktop.
    Thanks.

    1. AT SPI Registry Wrapper - is related with accessibility. I've disabled it to no ill effect.
    2. GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper - sounds important, so I left it enabled. after all, network-manager accesses the keyring (as well as some other programs).
    3. GNOME Settings Daemon - I left this alone because it sounds important. I think, if you disable, you may have problems with wallpapers and other visual styles.
    4. GNOME Settings Daemon Helper - Same as above.

  • [Solved] Wallpapers disappear after running nemo

    Hi All,
    I did search for my issue in the forums but found nothing (maybe the keyword "wallpaper" I used is too broad). I'm using gnome 3.10 and nemo 2.0.0. I create a file like adwaita-timed.xml to display the wallpapers:
    <background>
    <starttime>
    <year>2011</year>
    <month>11</month>
    <day>24</day>
    <hour>7</hour>
    <minute>00</minute>
    <second>00</second>
    </starttime>
    <transition type="overlay">
    <duration>3456</duration>
    <from>/home/ly/wallpapers/7.jpg</from>
    <to>/home/ly/wallpapers/23.jpg</to>
    </transition>
    It works fine until I run nemo. Then the wallpaper is black and it's still black even after I close nemo. Does anybody know what's wrong with my machine?
    Regards.
    Edit: Thanks, Darkcloud.

  • How to change background in GNOME

    I kinda of hate the GNOME developers for making me ask this, but here it goes.
    Is there a way to set the desktop background to an image located in a folder other than my home pictures folder?
    Specifically, I have a folder in my "Pictures" folder titled "Wallpapers".
    Thanks

    example
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:///home/alabala.jpg'

  • Gnome 3 change background script

    I used a public domain perl script (by some Michael Moore) to change periodically the wallpaper under Gnome 2, here it is:
    #!/usr/bin/perl -w
    use strict;
    use warnings;
    my $searchPath = '~/wallpapers/';   # Set to the directory you want to have searched for photos
    my $switchTime = 300;               # Edit to the number of seconds between photo switches
    my @photos = `find $searchPath -type f | grep [jJ][pP][eE]*[gG]`;
    chomp(@photos);
    my $photo;
    while(1)
        $photo = $photos[rand($#photos)];
        `gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename "$photo"`;
        sleep($switchTime);
    Of course, it doesn 't work under Gnome 3, because of the gconftool line.
    I understand it is done this way now:
                  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///home/user/background.jpg"
    But my perl skills are quite limited and my attempts to modify the script to the new way have failed miserably.
    Is here someone more skilled than me can give me some help with this thing??
    It's not incredibly important but I really really liked the wallpaper timed changing.
    Thanx in advance.

    Why not use a XML file? check this out https://github.com/dzup/borednomore  you can either make  your own XML file or use one of those scripts, one is for gconf2tool (gnome 2) and the other for gsettings (gnome 3) its for ubuntu/debian, but i see no difference between the way you guys call gsettings in arch, looks the same to me in debian, you may try it and told me if it does, thanks.

  • Gnome cant open most Jpegs

    Hi Guys
    Did an -Syu yesterday and apart from getting a busted bash, it seems my Jpeg loading in gnome is all stuffed.
    Symptoms are no jpeg wallpapers
    And EOG says 'invalid file format'
    I figured it was the libjpeg-turbo from testing that was to blame.. so I reverted that back to libjpeg, but alas no joy
    I also reverted libgnomecanvas and libexif in the off chance it was one of them.
    I found an old thread where somebody removed and reinstalled  gtk2.. this also didn't help.
    Any ideas??
    EDIT:
    Or even any way to debug it.. I can't even get a 'libjpeg missing' or something.
    Last edited by insanemal (2011-03-02 03:44:05)

    EDIT:
    Found it.
    The broken bash from testing installed during the updates. It would seem that because that was installed, install scripts did not work for a later package. Re-installing all the packages that were installed on the 1st (except the broken bash) fixed the issue.

  • Wallpaper behind gnome-panel using compiz

    When I use compiz to set the wallpaper for me, I have 6 different wallpapers for my 6 'desktops'. I only have a transparent gnome-panel at the top. Problem is, the wallpaper of the first desktop will show on all the other desktops through the panel, and not the wallpaper that was assigned. Is this a common fault?

    The transparency of the gnome-panel is 'fake', in that it actually paints the desktop (done by Gnome without knowledge of Compiz). If you really want a transparent part of the panel, try using the greenscreen plugin for compiz (I think its not developed anymore, and it barely made beta, but its the only thing of its type), google for it. I found it easier in the end to just auto-hide the panel and rely on some alternative like cairo-dock.
    EDIT: Because I'm a nice person, and because I wanted to try it out myself, [url=http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29209]here's the AUR package for the greenscreen plugin. It works on my system, going to try some interesting conkies with it soon.
