Context help problem

Salve a tutti,

• What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window but in other cases, both the label and caption appear in the context help window?

I am trying to polish an application, and find that I cannot seem to reliably control which of the label or caption text appears in the context help window because I don't understand what rules are in place to determine which should appear. It seems like if I reate a named constant, then use it's right click menu command "Create Indicator" I get a control with only a Label (as long as I don't add a caption). This then appears in the context help window as the label name followed by the description text (after entering some description text). But if I add a caption, the label name is shown in bracket
s which is a 'feature' I would like to avoid, because I have certain controls where I would like to use a descriptive variable name on the block diagram side without using so much space on the front panel. It seems like there is no way to avoid showing the Label name in the context help for a control/indicator. Is this true?
I thought the purpose of having a seperate caption was to make the text that appears with a control programmatically controllable, but if that control is not extended to what appears in the context help window, it limits the usefulness of the caption and forces me to re-consider some Label names. However, the problem goes deeper than that because then even when I make the label and caption exactly the same, or if I delete (via a select caption text-backspace or select caption text- delete key .. sequence) the caption for a control, the label name in the context help window still appears in square brackets!
Can I have complete control over the context help fo
r a particular control (or has anyone found a third-party context help solution that functions compatibly with LabVIEW 7 in a built application that they will be so kind as to recommend?)
I have used LabVIEW for three years, and I am now using LabVIEW 7.0.

Sorry for that.. I was changing the text of my question and didn't read carefully enough in the preview stage. I wanted it to read "What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window?"

• How to display the master TOC when using Context help in a merged document

I use Robohelp 10. I have created a large Merged Webhelp project and I have set out the project master with nothing in it other than merged projects place markers.
This is the layout of the generated projects etc.
Generate
Master.htm
Redirect.htm (Home page is a redirect to Project 1 Home Page - not in TOC)
mergedProjects
Project1
Home Page.htm
Project2
Redirect.htm (Home page is a redirect to Project 1 Home Page - not in TOC)
Project3 etc.
Redirect.htm (Home page is a redirect to Project 1 Home Page - not in TOC)
I can get the help to work great when I call up the master page, which shows the TOC for the whole project and the default home page. And from the breadcrumb the home link goes to the home page and shows the Main TOC
However when I call a page using context help ID I get a single frame with the selected page. The link to show the TOC shows the TOC but it is the top of the merged project and not the master TOC. The home link in the does display the home page but again the displayed TOC is the one of the current merged project.
The question is :
How can I get the Master TOC to show all the time regardless of what page I call using a context ID or how can I create a link that will take me back to the Master TOC?
I remember when I created a previous help file for chm output I had to modify all the ali files in order for the redirect to work throught the master chm. Surely this is not the case with webhelp?

I am sorry that I didn't get back to all you guys that took to answering my very promptly. Unfortunately I was not in a position to answer to the suggestions made. as I was away from my computer which had Robohelp on.
Anyway, I did try a couple of scripts mentioned, but didn't really have any success i achieving what I need to do.
I set up a redirect which redirected to the main home page. I tried setting the home page in a main sub-project - so the redirect when from any sub project
Generate
Master-project.htm (Home Page = Help_Welcome.htm)
merged Projects
SubProject1
[Home Page = home_redirect.htm (a redirect see below) ]
SubProject 2
[Home Page = home_redirect.htm (a redirect see below) ]
SubProject 3
[Home Page = home_redirect.htm (a redirect see below) ]
home_redirect.htm (a redirect use by sub-topics)

//
This setup works fine as long as I call the master page. The TOC is as I would want. However if I call an ID from my application I get the required page to display and I can get the TOC to show. The problem is that the TOC is from the current sub-project and not the master project as I would want.

• Automatic word wrapping in context help window?

Hello together
I don't get the way how labview does the automatic word wrapping in the context help window. Does somebody know that?
regards
Woodi

I see my problem. Everytime I do just a single carriage return, or a return, the automatic line wrapping doesn't work. But it works fine, if I do two carriage returns.
This is actually not exactly what I want, but at least the user doesn't have to scroll.

• Context help (when in HTML element) no longer works

In Mozilla Thimble:
When the insert cursor is placed in an HTML element, an orange question mark circle appears. This used to have a popup with brief information about the tag, then link to more information in the reference. This circle no longer does any of the above. This change is recent, about a few weeks ago.

Just tried this after your reply and the problem went away (with or without Collaboration option enabled). Context help works now! Perhaps the developer fixed it?
Also, thanks for pointing out Collaborate option. Seems useful.

when i choos some controller and i click context help, the small window open with text "no description available" what's the problem?

All that it means is you did not write the description and tip. It does not get written by itself. Did you even right click on a control and look at the options?

• How can i create a link in the context help from frontpanel elements like knobs and so on

i want to create on context sensitive online help and therefore need to know how i can place a hyperlink in the context help from labVIEW of a frontpanel element

lotto;
You can place your help file in LabVIEW help directory, which should be in \help. If you place your help file in that directory, then when you start LabVIEW, you can access your help from LabVIEW's help menu (there will be an extra entry with the name of your help file.)
To link your control or vi to this help file, open the front panel (or the panel where you edit the control) and open the VI setup. In the help path field write the following:
:\name.hlp
Where "name" in the name of your help file. in the "Help Tag" field you should enter the tag you already assigned to the topic in the help at design time. (I suggest the tag to be similar as the vi or control name.)
After all this, the next time you start LabVIEW,
you should be able to access the context help file to your control or vi by right-clicking on it and selecting "Online Help".
IMPORTANT NOTE: Be aware that you may loose files you locate in special directories in LabVIEW, like the help, because those directories might be overwritten when you upgrade your software. Another option can be to locate your help file in a directory other than LabVIEW's help. The steps are almost the same, except that you won't be able to access your help file from LabVIEW's help menu.
Best regards;

• Possible bug with Tab Control and Context Help?

I created Description and Tip text for each Tab of a tab control I am using on my front panel. I have a subVI that is called by selecting a menu item from my main front panel. The subVI's front panel also has a menu system and a Tab Control. I have Description and Tip text written for each of the tabs on the subVI's front panel.
When I enable context help from the menu of my main VI, the proper help text shows up for the tabs on the main vi and, when I bring up the subVI's front panel, for its tabs as well.
So far so good...
Now I builld the application and run it as an executable. For ALL of my panel tab descriptions, I get the tab's label in bold text, but no description (just a blank area).
Is this a bug in LabVIEW?

I'm still seeing this behavior in LV8.2.1. Does anyone know if/when it was fixed? Also, my tip strips show up in the corner of the monitor when I mouse over a tab (in both the executable and the development version).
I see it still even in 8.5.
The Help part of the bug is still NOT fixeed by NI.
But I dont get the tool tip appearing in the corner of the monitor, it is showing up as usual.

• Context Help in diferents Columns in a JTable

I want to put Context Help in the diferents columns in a JTable (in columns, in headers or cells); but I don't know how I can do it.
Please, if somebody can help me, or simply say me that this is not possible (if is really impossible).

Carlos,
You can write your own F1 listener for JTable (or if you prefer a right click help menu option then a mouse listener). In the listener determine what cell has focus or is clicked over. From this generate a help topicID. Then call showTopic on the CSHManager or Help.
Note the table has an editor component (e.g., JTextField), the make sure that the correct topicID is associated with this editor component.

• How to add context help text to a property node of an XControl?

Hi
anyone knows how to add description for a property node of an XControl which should appear in the context help window of LV?

Solved!
Go to Solution.

Hi Vsh,
You can set the property context help by right-clicking the xcontrol in your Project Explorer, selecting Properties, selecting the "Item Settings" category and clicking on the Property that you wish to write context help for. You will see a box titled "Description" on the right; this is where the context help is defined.
Let me know if you have trouble finding this.

• Context Help window is not displaying any information in Stand Alone App

The context help window displays the vi description, as desired) when running in the development environment. However after building the Stand Alone app, while the I can open the context help window using Ctl-H or the front panel menu Help , the help window in empty. The mouse cursor changes to a "hand" while hovering over the icon pic in the upper right hand corner of the Front Panel but does not invoke any change in the help window.

Any ideas out there?

Mike,
Yes, you should be able to zip it or just change the extension and we can change it back. In the mean time I have replicated what you are talking about with a simple executable. However, I think this might be expected behavior. After all, your executable is not a VI anymore. You can also make a product suggestion to have this changed.

• How to Modify The Text That Appear in Context Help?

Hello,
I searched, but could not find any result.
Actually I am using a code from "Find Example" of Labview. I have modified it for my application and hence, I must modify the context help (as some of its dicription is not true anymore). Would anybody able to suggest me how to do it?
Thanks,

Right click on the VIs Icon and select VI Properties. In the Category drop down ring select documentation. Edit the text. The text in VI description is what will be displayed in LabVIEWs context help.
