Context menu hotkey to open in new tab is different for links (T) & bookmarks (W); using T for bookmark deletes bookmark!--why?

When I want to open a link in a new tab, I right-click and press T. I think that the same key used to work for opening bookmarks in new tabs, also. At least I developed a reflex that always chose T for a new tab, whatever I was right-clicking on. Then a while ago, probably after one of the updates I automatically install (some time in version 3.x), I started noticing something different and extremely frustrating: not only is the hotkey for opening bookmarks in new tabs now different (W instead of T), which is just poor design--but to add injury to insult, when my still-stubborn reflexes pressed T, the bookmark was deleted. Gone. I have thousands of bookmarks, and I make them so I don't have to remember things. If one is lost, there may be no finding the page again.
EDITED:
Having posted this problem, I just realized that I've answered the why-it-happens part of the question. We're left with the why-was-it-allowed-to happen, but that's unimportant if we can put an end to the confusing behavior.
T in the bookmark panel and menus is Cut, which is standard in all kinds of software, and that my lost bookmarks could be restored IF I remembered to paste them again immediately. (I swear I checked it out just before originally posting, and Cut didn't appear, though Copy did. Maybe I was hallucinating.) Anyway, knowing this will help with the long-term problem, but it's still a bad idea to have two different hotkeys for the same operation. Hence what needs to change is using T as the hotkey in the links context menu.
Here's my proposal: Change the hotkeys for "Open in new window" and "Open in new tab" in both the right-click menu for links and the right-click menu for bookmarks. Right now we have:
Links
* Open Link in New Tab (T)
* Open Link in New Window (W)
Bookmarks
* Open Link in New Tab (W)
* Open Link in New Window (N)
N0te that the bookmarks menu is mnemonically backwards; Window should be W. Both menus should be:
* Open Link in New Tab (N)
* Open Link in New Window (W)
Can someone take care of this in an update, please?

This also drives me nuts, I work in research online and use firefox as its tabbed browing is so good, and I ofetn have to open lots of links in rapid succession from web-pages - obviously I use right click T as the fasterst method of doing this, and I use it so ofetn that it is now a reflex.
But, whenever I try to open a bookmark from my toolbar (much less often) I tend to deletye it, and if I am lucky enough to notice before I do anything else I have to go through a laborious process to undo the delete...
Interesting to read the reason above, but I would suggest that this is something that needs to be standardised across all of a browser's context menus, otherwise browsing becomes jarring.
I am all in favour of 'T' opening in a new tab from all context menus, but if this is not do-able I think you should consider picking a different letter. The N & W proposal above is good.
Thanks!

• The only way I can open a new tab is by right-clicking a bookmarked site and selecting "Open in a New Tab." I can't click on the New Tab + or CTR+T or open via File. WHY?!?

The only way I can open a new tab in Firefox is by right-clicking a bookmarked site and selecting "Open in a New Tab." I can't click on the New Tab + or CTR+T or open via File. WHY don't the other means work?

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

• Can't open a new tab with the + for tabs. Can open with Mid mouse button. Nightly.

When I click The + to open a new tab in Nightly, it does nothing. I can open new tabs with mid ouse button, or right click>open in new tab. Just cant open a new tab via the + button. Started 3 updates ago in nightly (3 days ago pretty much).

Are you using a 32 bit Nightly build or a 64 bit Nightly build?
The 64 bit Nightly build for Windows is only generated to test for compilation errors and doesn't undergo all the tests that other builds get, so the risk that something goes wrong can be quite high.<br />
So if you do use the 64 bit version then try the 32 bit version to see if you still have this problem.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

• Top navigation menu items should open in new tab

In a share point 2013 site, i have created top navigation using term set from managed meta data. some of the menu items navigate the user with in the site whereas some other menu items will navigate to the external sites. My requirement is I want to open
external links in new tab and internal links in same tab itself.
Please advise.
Regards,
Chaitanya.

Assuming that internal URL are relative and external urls are absolute, you can use a jQuery script to add target="_blank" attribute to the links.

• Context-sensitive WebHelp topics opening in new tab not window per browser default

hello everyone.  i am generating WebHelp using Robohelp 7. the developer i am working with is new to WebHelp but got the idea pretty quick. i generated a map and he set up the help link to call the correct topic from the application.
at first he could not figure out how to display the navigation pane by default. but then we identified Windows > New Window in the Project Set-up pod and when i changed this from One Pane View to Two Pane View and regenerated the nav pane started coming up.
the problem now is that despite my having unchecked the Use Default Browser Settings, WebHelp opens according to whatever is configured in the browser for "new window" links. for example in Firefox if Options > Tabs > Open new windows in a new tab instead is selected, WebHelp opens in a new tab.  same deal in IE.
if anyone can tell me how to ensure that WebHelp always opens in a new window when the context-sensitive link is used i would very much appreciate it. i used Robohelp extensively some time ago but it has been a while and some of this stuff is not coming back to me.
thanks

Hi there
I'm thinking that if you really want a new window, you will need to resort to some custom JavaScripting. By default, things are probably dependent upon the browser settings.
If you are insistent on having a new window, I might suggest looking at how NetFlix does their popups. They are very pesky and seemingly impossible to turn off!

• Why do I have to click open in new tab or window for my gmail links to open?

Hello, When using Gmail in my Firefox web browser every link I click on to open goes to a new tab with a blank page and the following url - https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&view=bsp&ver=ohhl4rw8mbn4. However, if i right click and open in a new tab/window Firefox will then open the link and send me to the page the link was intended to go. It does this with every link I try and open from Gmail.
I tried using IE and Chrome and when I click the link within the email body, it opens it up with no issues at all.
Firefox is my default browser so I would like to not have to do this all the time. Anyone know what is causing this?
I am using the latest version of Firefox and Windows Vista Premium.

Sometimes we see odd behaviour due to a misbehaving add-ons. I suggest starting by disabling all of your add-ons (Tools->Add-ons) to see if any of them are the culprit.

• Can Firefox open a new tab when I click on a bookmark?

Can I get Firefox 5.01 to open bookmarks in a new tab when I click on them?

Keyboard shortcut is built into Firefox there is no need for an extension, but you will have to make a modification perhaps to a configuration variable.
set the following configuration variable
browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground
to the same value as you have for
browser.tabs.loadInBackground
Opening links in the background with Ctrl+Shift+click or foreground with Ctrl+click
or the other way around is controlled by Tools > Options Tabs > when I open a link in a new tab switch to it immediately.
More information on configuration variables available in

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")<br />

• Set Firefox to open a new tab without selecting it from the context menu by two-finger tapping in Lion

In Snow Leopard, I had somehow set the two finger tap to open a new tab either from a link on a page or from my bookmarks bar, without having to select "Open a new tab" from the context menu. I recently upgraded to Lion and I can't remember how I set this feature-- or is it just not available anymore?

There is a plugin for this and you can configure it as shown in the attached screen to open all links from the web page in a new tab by just clicking on it and not having to follow the native steps

• "Open link in new tab" not working with Safari and new Yahoo Mail won't open in new tabs.  Yahoo says it is a Safari issue.  I don't think so.

Any ideas?
Works fine in classic Yahoo mail.  But in the "new" Yahoo mail, there is not even an option to open in new tab when I right click the message to be opened.  Interestingly enough, I can right click open to new tab on any other link on the same page that the emails are listed in.
Anyone encounter this?  Have a solution?
Thanks.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. Try Yahoo / tabs. If it functions as it should, move the .plist file to the Trash. Otherwise move it back to the Preferences folder.
And check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari. Try again.

• Why not Restore Ctrl-Leftclick Link to Open in New Tab?

Between versions 22 and 24, ctrl-leftclick went away as a keyboard accelerator to open a link in a new tab.
Now there are two ways: rightclick the link and pick a munu item to open in new tab, or middleclick the link.
Rightclick and choose menu item is more difficult, as it requires actually looking at and reading the menu.
Middleclick is not as easy or reliable for most people today since the middle mouse button is usually a wheel and difficult to click with any precision.
I can see no reason why you shouldn't restore Ctrl-Leftclick to open a link in a new tab and lots of reasons why you should. Will you please do so?

Yes, this is caused by their click tracking script. When you hover over a link, it looks normal, but:
&lt;a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57607188/no-deal-yet-government-shutdown-debt-limit-talks-continue/" onclick="return lc_trackclick(event,'9848', 'No+Deal+Yet%3A+Talks+Continue');">No Deal Yet: Talks Continue&lt;/a>
We've seen another site with this issue in the past, but it only affected a few links at the bottom of the page so it wasn't as annoying.
Besides the two workarounds you're using (right-click, middle-click), you could strip those click trackers. Three possible approaches:
(1) Find an extension that works on that site
(2) Remove the tracking manually using a bookmarklet (a script you save to your Bookmarks Toolbar as a button)
(3) Remove the tracking automatically using a userscript (a script that runs in the Greasemonkey extension or the Scriptish extension)
Since anti-tracking extensions are pretty common now, you might check those. Please note that if they aren't coded carefully, they could stop links on some sites from working correctly.
If you decide you're interested in a more tailored solution, you could request a userscript to be developed on this forum: Ideas and script requests - Userscripts.org. Please note that the site does NOT check scripts before they are posted, and takes forever to remove bad ones, so protect your personal information by not installing anything that touches Facebook and cast a skeptical eye on reviews.
