  • Leopard Safari: Contextual Menu Madness

This is ANNOYING. The Safari 3 Beta - Pre Leopard Release - behaved really nicely when choosing the contextual menu. You could right-click anywhere to choose back/forward whatever. The final Leopard is dfferent. If you happen to have the mouse over a word when you right click, the entire word is selected automatically and the contextual menu only displays 'Search in Spotlight/Google etc'.Bloody annoying if all you wanted to do is go back... Now you have to hen-peck between paragraphs. Bad choice guys...

I find these shortcuts quite handy:
To go back press the "command" and "[" keys simultaneously
To go forward press "command" and "]" keys simultaneously

  • How do I get the menu bar to appear on multiple displays without mirroring displays?

I keep finding things about the new Yosemite update that I do not like. The most recent is that apparently you can't have a menubar on multiple displays, unless you mirror the displays. This does not work for me. I want to keep my thunderbolt display as my primary display, but I am working in photoshop on my Cintiqu and I can't afford to drag my mouse all the way back to the thunderbolt display every time I need to access the photoshop menu.
Is there some sort of fix for this that I'm not seeing?
If not I sincerely hope that the apple engineers fix this ASAP.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Multiple entries for same apps showing next to 'Open With' in contextual menu since last backup

I did a back up of my MBPs internal drive recently, using Carbon Copy Cloner - since then there are multiples of the same icons for all apps under 'Open With' in the contextual menu. I seem to remember there being a command line that could be entered in Terminal to fix this, but I can't find it anywhere.
    Can anyone help?

Yes, LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Contextual menu in finder "open with" has multiple entries of same apps

When I use the contextual menu (right click) on documents, the menu point "open with..." shows multiple entries of the same programs. For example when right clicking a PDF, there appears 5 times neoOffice, 2 times Preview, 6 times ... any other application that you could use to open the document. This occurs on all user accounts, only that the multiplicity of listings of the apps is different. So it can't be a preferences problem on my account. What else could be the cause?
This is quite annoying because the apps-list becomes very long and unusable.
Note: I have 2 internal start up disks with OS and apps installed, but only one mounted. That means, there cannot be a duplicate (triplicate...etc) copy of any app accessible at any time.
    Thanks.

if I quit all running applications, it will be pretty hard to put anything in the Trash!
Are you being literal? Like quitting the Finder too? Or what bespeaks you?
Actually, I use Xupport to do that, but I think Onyx and several other Utilities include that option.

  • Mighty Mouse Secondary Button doesn't display contextual menu

Is my wireless MM working correctly?
I have the right click button set to secondary in system preferences.
If I right click on a link in Safari it opens that link in the same web page. However in Apps such as iPhoto, Pages or on the desktop there is no response (other than in iPhoto the picture is 'selected').
If I left click and press CTRL at the same time I get a contextual menu.
The contextual menu on the desktop reads "New folder, New burn folder, Get Info - change desktop background, show view options - toast it - automater, enable folder actions, configure folder actions.
As far as I remember since buying the computer in Dec 06 the right button has never shown these menus.
    I have Toast v 7.1.2
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    jon

Perhaps an explanation of how the MM works is in order and will help. I have to admit that the MM takes some getting used to and a bit of hand coordination. I got the hang of it quickly and have no issues with it.
The exterior of the MM is touch sensitive. It can "feel' your fingers on the exterior and interprets what it senses to determine what it thinks you want to do. I rest my hand on the MM with thumb and ring finger in the area of the side buttons and index finger to the left of the scrollball and the middle finger to the right of the scrollball. The MM is configured in System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Mouse with the Primary click on the left (with my index finger) and the Secondary click on the right (with my middle finger.)
If you click with the index finger to the left of the scrollball, you get a Primary click, with or without the middle finger touching the MM. To get a Secondary click, click with the middle finger to the right of the scrollball, but the index finger must be lifted from the MM.
I use a rocking of my two fingers. When I Primary click my middle finger goes up. When I Secondary click my index finger goes up. (I never could master the side button squeeze, so I turned them off in System Prefs.)

  • Cleanup of Finder Contextual Menu - Open With

How can I clean up the 'Open With' Finder Contextual Menu? It currently has duplicate entries for some applications (and, no, I don't have multiple copies of these applications installed on my Mac).
I tried to rebuild the 'Launch Services' database using a tool called 'Cache Out X,' but that didn't do do the trick.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

    David,
That seems like a logical conclusion. Documentation? I assume you mean:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -h
lsregister: [OPTIONS] [-domain { system | local | user | network }]... [path]...
Search the paths for application bundles and add each found item to the Launch
Services database. For domain specifications, ask CF for the list of application
    locations in the given domain(s).
-kill Reset the global Launch Services database before doing anything else
-lint Print information about plist errors while registering bundles
-convert Register apps found in older LS database files
-lazy n Sleep for n seconds before registering apps if the local cache
    is aleady populated.
-r Recursively register directory contents, do not recurse into
    packages or invisible directories.
-R Recursively register directory contents, including the contents
    of packages and invisible directories.
-f force-update registration info even if mod date is unchanged
    -v Display progress information.
-dump Display full database contents after registration.
    -h Display this help.
Still not sure why /Volumes/* yielded three entries for GraphicConverter. However, when I was searching for all possible occurrences of the application, I did notice something odd: the GraphicConverter application does not include a ".app" extension. All the other applications that I checked include this extension.

  • Spaces with Multiple Displays

I have been using Spaces with my MacBook with an external display, without mirroring to extend my desktop. Overall, it works really well and has certainly made things less hectic when I have 1-8 windows open per application and up to 5 applications.
One thing I figured out by playing is that you can have windows from the same application in different spaces. For example, I have FireFox open with three windows, and can position one FF window in each of three spaces. The only way to do this that I have found is to drag the individual windows from the Spaces view (F8), but it's really useful for me to have web-pages organized by Space (personal, work, Google, etc.). By the way, if I shut down FF or restart the machine, the windows do not "remember" which Space they were in, which is not surprising to me. I assume that is a limitation of FF, not OS X.
Now here is the issue/problem I have experienced several times: Every so often, I will completely "lose" one or more windows. For example, I have two FF windows open in Space 4, then upon switching to another space and going back to Space 4, the windows are gone. They still show up in the list of FF windows (from the "Windows" menu in FF itself), so I think they are still open, but it's like they were assigned to Space 0 or something. There is no way to get to them or bring them back that I have found. There is also no good explanation for why this is occurring or any reproducible set of circumstances.
I can accept that I am pushing the envelope on Spaces using both multiple displays and splitting windows from one application across Spaces, so I am not expecting this to work flawlessly (yet). However, it sure would be useful to be able to recover from this when it occurs.
By the way, as a tip I have mapped my mouse button 3 (external mouse with a scroll wheel that has a button) to show Spaces, which has been very handy for me.
One last thing: Does anyone else think it would be cool to have Spaces act more like true individual Desktops? In other words, be able to set background image per Space and maybe even have different files on each Space/Desktop? Files would be more involved since Spaces are less permanent than a real Desktop, but background images seems like an easy thing to be able to code for.

Just to be clear, you CAN run an application and split its windows across different Spaces by dragging those windows in the Spaces view. So open Firefox in Space 1, open a second FF window in Space 1, then F8 and drag the second window into Space 2 and voila. It's somewhat random what happens when you click on the application icon in the dock when you do this, but it does work.
Good point about the background being very resource-intensive. Never mind.

  • Contextual menu on links in mail doesn't work

I had hoped that this annoying bug was fixed in release 10.10.1 of Yosemite. It is not and I have to ask the question.
There is a contextual menu in mail if you option click on a link:
The problem is: it doesn't work! All the three options do nothing. I submitted it to Apple but unfortunately it wasn't fixed. Somebody else has this problem and was able to fix it? It is quite annoying, like almost everything these days in Yosemite.
I've don't a clean install of Yosemite several times. Didn't fix.

    Hi cchauvin08,
If you can't post your page on the web for others to see,
then perhaps you can paste the relevant markup/code. For example,
what type of inputs are you using? You said "text box" do you mean
a TextArea or a TextField? What does the widget constructor for
that particular validation field look like? What does the markup
look like, including the markup for the <form> tag?
We're going to need more info due to the fact that some of
these validation widgets have multiple configurations (types of
    validation).

  • Contextual Menu Not Working

    Hi!
My Contextual Menu doesn't work in Safari, nor in Mail - possibly not in other apps, as well, but I haven't really checked. For instance, say I select a word on a web page. If I try to "right-click" by putting down two fingers on the pad and clicking - nothing happens. Also, if I hover over a word, and do <controlcommandd>, no Dictionary pop-up. Dictionary is the main thing I use the CM for, but no other options are available.
It used to work, but I don't know what I might've done to change this. I've tried clearing CM items from both /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ and ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ and restarting, but no go. I can't think of anything I might've installed that would coincide with the problem. Any ideas, folks?

That's odd, I've only seen "system flippers" in relation to trying to open an older PPC app on an Intel.
Certainly the command for rebuild Launch Services should not give that.
I'd run Verify Disk from /Utilities/Disk Utility and also Repair Permissions and see what it turns up.
    1. Navigate to Utilities/DiskUtility and launch Disk Utility.
    2. Choose your volume (usually the second icon)
    3. Choose "First Aid" tab
    4. Click on "Repair Permissions"
Also run "verify" disk. If the disk needs repair:
    Repair Disk:
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc or Install Disk 1 that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

  • How to Edit "Open With" in contextual menu

For instance, while right clicking on a jpeg the "Open With" pop up displays Pixelmator, which is no longer installed, it also shows Photoshop Elements, but that version is on a backup disk, not the current disk, also there is no option to open in Apperture, which is installed and active.
Is there a way to remove old or unwanted applications and put in current applications into the Contextual Menu?

Yes, LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Icon for multiple displays?

I downloaded Mavericks yesterday and am looking for the icon that allows for multiple displays.  According to the overview it should be on my menu bar but nothing has shown up.  Is there a setting I need to change?  Or, is there another way I can connect my laptop to my TV through my Apple TV using wi-fi?  Thanks!

Try System Preferences, Displays, check the box to show Mirroring in menu bar.
    Is your Mac capable?

  • Bug or Feature? Array Custom Contextual Menu Destroys "Delete" and "Insert" Element!

    Step to Reproduce:
    - Create an Array (doesn't matter of what type).
    - Ctrl-M (to switch to Run Mode)
    - Notice that:
           - when you Right-Click on the Array borders, you have access to an "Empty Array" menu item among other things
           - when you Right-Click in an Array element, you have access to an "Insert Element Before" and a "Delete Element" menu item among other things
    - Now switch back to Edit Mode and modify the contextual menu in the following way:
            - Advanced>>Run-Time Shortcut Menu>>Edit...
            - Edit>>Copy Entire Menu
            - Switch to "Custom" menu (instead of "Default"): the menu disappears and is replaced by a single ??? item
            - Edit>>Paste: The default menu reappears with the ??? on top
            - Create you favorite custom menu item by editing the ??? item (say: Do Nothing)
    - Save the menu with the control and switch to Run Mode (Ctrl-M).
    - Now try the first 3 steps above: wherever you right-click, you have access to the Custom Menu, but the Array Element contextual menu is GONE.
In other words, you cannot (it seems) define a custom contextual menu for an array without destroying the default contextual menu for its elements.
Therefore, if you want to preserve the ability to Insert and Delete Elements in an array, you have to add these two items to the Array contextual menu and juggle with the position of the right-click to figure out whether or not to display them...

Well, I created in LabVIEW 2012 such a control and added part of the default menu in the way you described with copy-paste as a submenu to an Edit entry in my custom menu and it did not disappear:

  • Installed 10.2.8 and contextual menu doedn't work

    Hi all,
I install 10.2.8 on two iMacs and options in the contextual menu in the Finder are not displaying anymore except the arrows e.g "open with" arrow or the arrow to scroll a long list of options. Has anybody got any ideas what I could do?

    HI Donny,
I haven't had a chance to come back to this computer till now. I reinstalled the Mac OSX 10.2.8 update, I had forgotten that you said to install the Combo version. Only change I have noticed is that the "Open with" arrow on the the contextual menu appears and displays the names of applications when clicked but the actual contextual menu still hasn't any text.
I am getting this strange read out in Disk Utility and if I remember correctly 10.2 should not be displaying all for this but I think only the line with "New Permissions". Would you have a look through it & see do you recognise anything there. I will give the Combo update an install and report back.
    Thanks again,
    Fiachra.
