Contextual menu placement "stuck"

Sometimes, when in Finder, if I bring up a contextual menu, either by right-clicking the mouse, or ctrl-clicking, the contextual menu itself shows up somewhere far away from the cursor. It doesn't matter where on the screen the actual right-click happens, even on my secondary screen, the contextual menu itself appears in the same place as thought it's stuck.
If I close the Finder window and open a new one, it's back to normal (contextual menu appears close to the cursor), but after a little while, it's back to being stuck somewhere else.
I first became aware of this yesterday, so I think it's a pretty new problem, and I can't think of anything I've done with my system to account for it.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any ideas how to fix it (other than just closing the Finder window and re-opening it)?
Thanks,
Scott

Yes - it happens with or without the second monitor hooked up.
Haven't found a solution yet... and it's still happening. I have rebooted my MBP, repaired permissions, etc... all the usual stuff. I thought I'd try deleting the contextual menus preference file, but there doesn't appear to be one in either ~/Library/Preferences or /Library/Preferences
On further testing, the problem appears to be related to particular Finder windows (as vs. Finder-wide)...
Once the problem reappeared, with two Finder windows open, both were exhibiting the problem. I then closed one of the windows and opened a new one. When using contextual menus in the new Finder window, they were placed fine, but on the still open 'old' Finder window, the contextual menus were still appearing in the wrong place.
Weird...

  • Contextual menu items remain after Bitcasa removal - why?

    Hello there.
I'm looking for a solution of Bitcasa context menu items that won't go away. After removing the app they still appear in the Finder context menus. I already searched the usual places like Keyboard Shortcuts, Services, etc. but couldn't find any entry that explains why it is still there.
Anyone got an idea why I can't remove it?

Okay. You got me on the wrong foot there. Sorry for being touchy.
I contacted the Bitcasa support and did everything they wrote on their support pages and more. I even got terminal commands from them to remove everything Bitcasa manually:
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/Bitcasa.app
    rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.bitcasa.*
    rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.Bitcasa.*
    rm -f /Users/*/Library/Preferences/com.bitcasa.*
    rm -f /Users/*/Library/Preferences/com.Bitcasa.*
    rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.bitcasa.*
    rm -r ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.bitcasa.Bitcasa.plist
    rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.bitcasa.*
The problem seems to be that I actually removed everything identifiable as part of Bitcasa code. And that's the only reason I cant't get rid of this darn menu. I'm not a programmer but I usually know my way around when it comes to apps. What puzzles me is the fact that there seems to no source for this contextual menu item.
    Is that even possible?

  • Right-click contextual menu in Firefox 4: Is there a way to move/remove "Open in new tab?"

I don't really like tabbed browsing, but "Open in new tab" is the first choice in the right-click contextual menu. I would like to have "Open in new window" be the first choice.
So is there a way to edit the contextual menu to change the order of menu items or delete them entirely?
    Thanks in advance.

This UI change is really stupid and useless. People got used to some specified menu items order. Changing this order could only annoy and anger.
Also the reload button has been relocated. This is another example of stupid Firefox 4 UI change. The good news is that it could easily be relocated to its original place.
It looks like the Firefox developers are suffering from idleness and boredom.

    Fellow Developers,

             InterfacePtr<IActionManager> actionMgr(theApp->QueryActionManager());

  • Organize the Finder's contextual menu ....

    Hi,
In the Finder, the contextual menu includes in the bottom many added menus. Automator is there and all the other contextual menu plugin I added over time. Some of them have many items for the same app and should be separated from each other.
I know I can create personalized menus with FRUIT MENU or with OPEN MENU X, but they do not work on the contextual menus that are added by the system.
Is it possible to separate these added contextual menu with separators ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert

I did not say you cannot delete them, I said those built-in to the OS cannot be deleted. Those installed by you or third-party software in either the Library or Home/Library's contextual menu items folders could be removed. But I wouldn't delete anything without knowing the consequences of doing so. Many contextual menu items have a purpose even though you may not have yet discovered the purpose.
You can simply create a ContextualMenuItems (Disabled) folder and place the ones you don't wish to use in the folder. You can create a similarly named folder in all three Library folders - one for each.
You could use a third-party preference pane like Diabloting - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - that can manage contextual menu items, preference panes, fonts, etc. by moving them into and out of their normal folders.
I might wonder what is behind this effort?

  • Contextual menu strings missing

When I right click in safari, many of the strings of text are not found.
instead of the contextual menus, it says:
    localized string not found
    open link in new tab
    localized string not found
    add link to bookmarks
    localized string not found
    help!

It's a little unclear to me what you mean by the "selection box for the trackpad contextual menu". Do you mean a check box that's in the Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences under the Trackpad tab? There are several check boxes there, exactly which one are you asking about?
Remember, the version of Mac OS X 10.4.6 that comes with the MacBooks is different from the version of Mac OS X 10.4.6 that would be installed on a MacBook Pro, for example. It's actually newer and has a couple of additions like the "Place two finders on the trackpad and click button from secondary click" option.

  • Contextual menu keyboard shortcut

I've searched around and can't find an answer to this one.
What's the keyboard shortcut to access the contextual menu?
For example, when I select a text layer and press T, how can I change the font, size, anti-aliasing, etc. without using the mouse?

    Ryan,
I know a shortcut trick for getting access to the font family, font style, font size, and anti-aliasing input boxes while the text tool is selected.
Type your text; press the numeric keyboard enter key; press the standard key board enter key. This will place focus on the font family input box. Use arrow keys or start typing desired font family name. Press Tab key to jump forward one field...Shift Tab will jump back one field.
Don't hit enter while in these fields as you'll lose focus. If you do, you'll need to press the numeric keyboard enter key again.
When you are finished, press Control T to place focus back on the text tool. You'll need to do this to get commit/cancel type option.
For more options, you would need to use the Character palette. If you click in one of the Character palette fields, you can use the same shortcuts to cycle through the palette.
Ed gave you the shortcut to navigate the Menu bar with the type tool selected. Look at the word File in the menu bar when you hit Shift F10. Use the Underlined letters to navigate. So, Shift F10<W<C<C Enter will open the character palette.
Easier still, make a keyboard shortcut to call up the character palette.

  • Pages - Contextual Menu Synonym Suggestions - So Simple, Still Missing.

There are a couple of threads regarding this issue, but I see that most of them are locked, and so far I have not been able to find a satisfactory solution. I suspect this is because there is no solution, yet, and with this post I am hoping to prompt someone to develop an adequate solution, or point me in the right direction plugin-wise.
The problem: No drop down contextual menu synonym suggestions in Pages.
Before everyone hops on to tell me how to OPEN the dictionary / thesaurus application through the contextual drop down menu in Pages, I just want to let you know: I am aware. This is inadequate on several levels.
I and those people who have posted before, but remain unsatisfied, are not looking for a way to open another program, take the time to sort out irrelevant information, have to re-type the word, get or read through all the different definitions of the word. etc. etc. What is wanted is an exact replica (or better) of the Microsoft word contextual drop down menu, which is clearly superior. This menu simply has the option of "synonyms >" and then lists many synonyms in an adjacent drop-down menu. Should you want to change the word you've selected to a different more appropriate word, you simply select the word you want and it replaces the original. Simple, slick, uncomplicated, and indispensable.
Now, I am uncertain if this sort of feature has a copyright, and that would be the reason Apple has not included this feature, nor any third parties built some sort of plugin that will do this, but it is a feature without which making a switch to Pages as a main word processing program is not possible, which sadden's me.
Let me be clear, I am only interested in a solution that mimics the MS Word contextual menu synonym suggestion feature, or somehow improves upon it (if possible). Wasting time trudging through the ponderous options Pages currently offers is unnecessarily tedious. I hope an alternative feature for Pages is either out there, or will be soon. Thank you for your time.
    Jonner.

So, thank you for letting me know about the plug-in situation with Pages. That is to bad. Maybe someone who is interested will see this post and decide to develop a plug-in with this feature! That would be sweet. As I've said, I am planning to stay with MS Word, so your advising me to do so is a bit vestigial. You do follow up with information that clarifies my point by framing just how long Pages has gone without such an obviously useful feature, so thanks for the assist. :-)
I managed to find the direct feedback link all by my own self quite a while ago, and have utilized that excellent feature, I'm sorry I didn't relate this information in my prior reply. As far as your statements about my expectations about Apple responding at all, or incorporating my suggestion into future product revisions, well, as you have taken so much time and trouble to let me know exactly how unconnected you are from them, how can you expect me to believe you'd actually know anything about it? I'll leave it up to fate. Meanwhile, you've done your duty as an International Mac Using Volunteer. I really was not under the impression that Apple consulted with any users on this forum. I understand that the tone of my original post had an "I want to be persuasive" vibe. I didn't put much thought into the nature or purpose of these forums, but was just finding a place to vent. I find it a little hard to believe that no Apple employees ever read these forums, and that nothing that is said here ever actually makes its way into their thoughts, one way or another, but I understand, since I have such incomplete knowledge of the nature of these forums (after all, I am only a "level 1"), that I have erred. I get the overall feeling that you feel my post is irrelevant, or obnoxious, or both, and I am sorry if I mis-posted. I do appreciate you taking the time to respond to it despite this, but they've really sort of been "non-response-responses," haven't they? Sometimes thats the only type of response a person deserves, or can expect though. So, thank you again, anyways.

  • Custom tuning menu, menu bar, and contextual menu transparency levels?

I'm not talking about simply toggling menu bar transparency (which you can already do in 10.5.5 using System Preferences), but I'd like having the chance to tune transparency level for different objects.
Is there any way to tune:
    1) menu
    2) menu bar
    3) contextual menu
    transparency level?
(possibly individually for each of the three categories)
    This would be cool.

You can't - all the template navigation menus are not made to be changed.
If you want anything different, then you need to open the Inspector and go to Page and then check the box where it says 'hide navigation menu' and then you can build your own text based menu by using text boxes or shapes etc. and then use hyperlink to link to your pages. In this way you have full control over colour and placement.
The template navigation menus were not made to be changed.

  • Can't access in  Finder Contextual Menu  the sub-menu named More

    Hi!
I was trying to learn how to use Automator, in the web page
    http://www.macosxautomation.com/automator/examples/ex03/index.html
and I realize that I can't access in Finder Contextual Menu the sub-menu named More for choose Automator > Create Workflow... from the sub-menu.
Someone can help me to configure the finder in order to

That page is out of date since it doesn't reflect the change in Snow Leopard that did away with the More contextual menu. Try this. System Preferences->Keyboard->Keyboard Shortcuts->Services->Development->enable Create Workflow. Close the prefPane, select the object, CONTROL-click->Services->Create Workflow.
If that solves your issue, then send a message to the page's developer and ask them to update it.
BTW, see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2241804 for a four-parter by Sal Saghoian on *Automation in Snow Leopard*

  • No "decrypt" choice in contextual menu - need to decrypt an encrypted external hard drive

I have a Firewire 800 external hard drive that I had previously encrypted using the contextual menu.  I want to change the password on this drive so I'm trying to decrypt it and re-encrypt it while assigned a new password.  I have Filevault 2 enabled on my iMac but this shouldn't affect this external drive.  I also have a Firmware Password enabled on this iMac, but again, this shouldn't prevent a "decrypt" option in the contextual menu.
"Encrypt" is present in the contextual menu.  When I attempt to use this option it appears to allow me to assign a new password.  When I click "Encrypt" I get this message:  "The target Core Storage volume is already encrypted."  It's true that the drive is already encrypted, that's why I'm trying to decrypt it.
I'm running the latest version of Mountain Lion on a late 2012 iMac. I've searched online for someone with a similar problem, but haven't found this problem reference.  Does anyone have any idea as to why "decrypt" is not an option on this external drive, but it is on similar external drives that are also already encrypted.  Thanks.

Thanks for your help, Linc.  By the way, I mistakenly said I had Filevault and Firmware turned on.  Actually, they are NOT enabled on the iMac.  Here's what I got in my Text Edit window:

  • Contextual menu on links in mail doesn't work

I had hoped that this annoying bug was fixed in release 10.10.1 of Yosemite. It is not and I have to ask the question.
There is a contextual menu in mail if you option click on a link:
The problem is: it doesn't work! All the three options do nothing. I submitted it to Apple but unfortunately it wasn't fixed. Somebody else has this problem and was able to fix it? It is quite annoying, like almost everything these days in Yosemite.
I've don't a clean install of Yosemite several times. Didn't fix.

    Hi cchauvin08,
If you can't post your page on the web for others to see,
then perhaps you can paste the relevant markup/code. For example,
what type of inputs are you using? You said "text box" do you mean
a TextArea or a TextField? What does the widget constructor for
that particular validation field look like? What does the markup
look like, including the markup for the <form> tag?
We're going to need more info due to the fact that some of
these validation widgets have multiple configurations (types of
    validation).

  • Contextual Menu Not Working

    Hi!
My Contextual Menu doesn't work in Safari, nor in Mail - possibly not in other apps, as well, but I haven't really checked. For instance, say I select a word on a web page. If I try to "right-click" by putting down two fingers on the pad and clicking - nothing happens. Also, if I hover over a word, and do <controlcommandd>, no Dictionary pop-up. Dictionary is the main thing I use the CM for, but no other options are available.
It used to work, but I don't know what I might've done to change this. I've tried clearing CM items from both /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ and ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ and restarting, but no go. I can't think of anything I might've installed that would coincide with the problem. Any ideas, folks?

That's odd, I've only seen "system flippers" in relation to trying to open an older PPC app on an Intel.
Certainly the command for rebuild Launch Services should not give that.
I'd run Verify Disk from /Utilities/Disk Utility and also Repair Permissions and see what it turns up.
    1. Navigate to Utilities/DiskUtility and launch Disk Utility.
    2. Choose your volume (usually the second icon)
    3. Choose "First Aid" tab
    4. Click on "Repair Permissions"
Also run "verify" disk. If the disk needs repair:
    Repair Disk:
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc or Install Disk 1 that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

  • How to Edit "Open With" in contextual menu

For instance, while right clicking on a jpeg the "Open With" pop up displays Pixelmator, which is no longer installed, it also shows Photoshop Elements, but that version is on a backup disk, not the current disk, also there is no option to open in Apperture, which is installed and active.
Is there a way to remove old or unwanted applications and put in current applications into the Contextual Menu?

Yes, LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Multiple entries for same apps showing next to 'Open With' in contextual menu since last backup

I did a back up of my MBPs internal drive recently, using Carbon Copy Cloner - since then there are multiples of the same icons for all apps under 'Open With' in the contextual menu. I seem to remember there being a command line that could be entered in Terminal to fix this, but I can't find it anywhere.
    Can anyone help?

Yes, LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
