"Contextual Menus" problem accessing them?

Hi
My contextual menus do not show up with the usual click and hold down of my mouse bar
They do open if I hold down ctrl then click and hold.
This has only happened since an install of new hard drive but it is really annoying me especially with firefox and opening new tabs within the same window.
This happens with ALL software not just Firefox, just in case you thought FF was the problem
If anyone has the answer I would be really grateful.

Tough one. I'd start by making a folder on your desktop, and then, migrate over to User/Library/Prefence folder. Select every preference that looks like "com.apple...plist (except the "dock" one), and move it to the folder you made. Now, logout. If it doesn't help. you can put them all back, or not.

  • Problem with contextual menus after 10.9.3 update

Hello, since the update to 10.9.3 i am experiencing problems with contextual menus. The problem is more frequent when I use an external screen.
First problem: I am losing the icons in the top bar of the finder. This happens mostly on external screens.
Second problem: The arrows indicating submenus upon a right click are lost. This problem is also present when I use the internal screen of my Macbook.
Sometimes, the icons in the left menu bar of the finder are also lost (mostly Dropbox):
Is there anything I can do? Is this a known problem?
    My current system:
Macbook Pro Retina 13" (late 2013)
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 Gb Ram
    Intel Iris
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Can no longer access contextual menus on the desktop but still can in Dock

What's going on??? I used to be able to right click my mighty mouse on an icon on the desktop and access contextual menus. Now when I right click, all the icons on my desktop disappear then there is a slight pause before they reappear. If I right click in MS Office the application now crashes. Amazingly the contexual menus still work on the Dock and in Safari. Does this sounds like a virus/malware or is it a bug in my system? Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution to it?

    Hi, xstatical.
If Finder quits when you either:• Control-click an object.
    • Right-click an object using a two-button mouse. This may be due to either:• Installed software that added a bad contextual menu item.
    • Removed software that left a contextual menu item behind. What software did you last install or remove? Does its documentation refer to its use of Contextual Menu items?
Contextual menu items can be installed in two places:(1) Your Home > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder.
    (2) Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder. If the item is in the folder listed in (2), then:
    - Under Tiger or Panther, you'll be prompted to authenticate this operation by providing your Admin password when trashing it.
    - Under Jaguar, you may have to change the Owner to you (via Get Info > Ownership and Permissions) before you can trash it.

  • Using iDVD, I've no problem creating a slideshow, but I want to add three seperate sound files, in this case speeches I've got in iTunes. I want to create three individual buttons/sub menu to access them individually from the photos. Can anyone help

Using iDVD I've no problem creating a slideshow, but am having problems trying to add three seperate sound files in this case three speeches that I hold in iTunes. I want to be able to access them individually and seperately from the photo slideshow. Can anyone advise if this can be done and if it can, how I go about creating the seperate menu and buttons.

If you'd like to integrate the speeches with the slideshow, I'd do that in iMovie where you'll have more control over the timing.  Use chapter markers at the beginning of each speech so the viewer can jump to a particular speech (note that chapter markers advance the viewer to a particular spot -- the viewer keeps watching the rest of the video until the end of everything or until they use the remote's menu button).
If you're just wanting the speeches to be on the DVD so people can listen to the speeches after seeing your slideshow, you could:
    - use iDVD or iMovie to make a "slideshow" with just 1 image matching the length of a speech.
    - create three submenus and use the speeches as menu music.  Here's a (random) video on creating submenus:

  • Is there a way to get the old functionality back to contextual menus?

hi there, since my first post seems to be deleted, i try again.
in systems prior to 10.5, i could access a custom contextual item (including automator workflows) in the finder with a simple ctrl-click on a file and then select the item in in the pop-up menu.
now in 10.5 i ctrl-click on a file, then in the pop-up i have tio select "more" and then select the item i want.
this is very annoying if you use these items a lot.
is there a way around this ?

Non-Finder contextual menu's are in "More" for a reason. Go to any one of the Mac help sites/forums (including this one) and you'll see TONS of posts about the Finder SPOD'ing when the user control-clicks somewhere. The culprit is ALWAYS a poorly written third party contextual menu that the user has added to their system (often without their knowledge as a side effect of some app they installed). To alleviate this problem, Apple moved all non-Finder contextual menu's to "More".
While its not the best solution for those who use third party contextual menus all the time (the minority of users), it is the best solution for the majority of users who rarely use third party contextual menus.

  • Sudden problems accessing webpages and iTunes & App store.

About 2 days ago, my iMac started having problems accessing the iTunes store (and downloading purchases), accessing the App store, and loading webpages (both on Safari and Firefox). The rest of my applications work without problems. At first I thought it might be a internet connection problem, however, I don't have any problems on my MacBook, iPad or iPhone. I tried fixing the disk permissions, but that had no effect. Any ideas on what I should try next. I thought maybe I should do a clean installand then restore my my applications and user data from a backup I will make, however, I couldn't download Mountain Lion because of the problems with the App store (the download stalled at 360k). I know I can download it to my MacBook, but I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced anything similar and what might otherwise be done to fix it.
    Thanks,
    Erich

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Reset the System Management Controller.

  • How do I store VI References in global variables and access them later

From what I know, Labview automatically deletes VI references when they go out of use. Is there a way for me to override this so that I can access a set of preloaded references in a separate VI? Essentially I would like to open the VI's dynamically into the memory, store the references in global variables and access them at a later time. The VI's I'm referencing won't be known until runtime. I know its not the safest way to do it, but it would be the most productive on my end.
    Thank you
    Clay Upton

I'm not sure what you mean by "a later time", but a VI reference will remain valid as long as the VI is in memory. If you don't unload the VIs, the references will remain valid.
If you do need to unload the VIs, for whatever reason, I would suggest the following:
Create a functional global as your interface for obtaining the references.
Feed the paths to the VIs into the VI when initializing it (since you don't know which VIs in advance).
When calling the VI to obtain the references, have the VI check them first (using the Not a Number... primitive). If it sees that they're invalid, it can open a new reference and return that.
You should note that when a VI is removed from memory, the data space is used is released, so if those VIs are expected to hold data (using shift registers, etc.) this will be a problem.
The description I've given will only be usable in certain instances (and it has its intricacies), but you didn't really give any details about what you're actually trying to accomplish.

  • I would like to free up some space on my computer and move my iphoto library to the time capsule and easily access it. Also, would I be able to access them via the TC if I purchased a new computer?

I am using my TC as an external hard drive, I would like to remove my photos from my computer to free up space. I'm wondering:
    1. Once the photos are moved, how do I access them via the TC, AND will i still be able to print them and see them the way they were set up in my iphoto on the computer?
    2. If I purchase a new computer, will I still be able to access them just as easily?
    3. What is the process to move the photos to the TC?
I am afraid that if I "erase" them from my computer I will not be able to access them.

    Are you still using iphoto?
If so you should NOT move the iphoto library to the TC and use it.
Apple says you will corrupt the library doing this.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
Although mostly about FAT32  it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
Now what I cannot tell you is if the same rules apply to the new photo app. Apple might have fixed the problem.
For iphoto you should offload the photos to USB drive plugged into your computer.. or any external drive.. the faster the interface the better.
Apple have explicit instructions for moving the library.

  • Contextual menus crashing apple apps

    Hi,
Just recently I've had a problem with right-clicking to see contextual menus. I notice that this is only in apple applications, such as Safari, Mail, and Text.
I also can't seem to find any folder containing what might be in the menu items so that I can view and possibly delete the offending item.
any ideas? I just tried clearing system cache as well, but nothing changed. I also tried logging in as a different user and that didn't fix it either.
    thanks!
    Dave

3rd party contextual menu items are known to often cause such crashes.
Look in /Library/Contextual menus and homedirectory/Library/Contextual menus.
move whatever you find there out of these directories and see if that clears things up.

  • Problems accessing Time Capsule on windows Vista

I have an iMac running Leopard and a laptop running Vista Home Edition. I'm having some problems accessing Time Capsule from the Vista machine. everytime I click to access the drive, a message appears in the menu bar of the window that says (not responding). I've tried leaving it. I've even changed my entire wireless network to bypass the original g router (belkin) to use TC, so I now have TC as my router, Belkin just setup as a wired broadband modem but I still get the same problem. The mac seems fine, although I have had quite a few issues with drop outs.
both machines have the latest version of Airport Utility and Bonjour.
The laptop is a recent purchase to replace a dead XP machine, this worked fine and I managed to get stuff backed up just before it died, thankgod.
    Any help appreciated.

No problem seeing Time Capsule with iMac, Dell desktop XP Home, Dell notebook XP Pro, and Fusion with XP Pro. All installed according to the installation guide. Installed AirPort Utility on all machines and updated firmware to 7.3.1. To see the other machines, make sure file sharing is on. Firewall on the PCs may need to be turned off. The printer plugged into the USB port also worked with all the XP systems and the iMac with a few missing features on iMac (I am assuming different driver issues). BTW, logging onto the created network and accessing the Time Capsule HD are separate. If you've entered different passwords for the HD and wireless networking when setting up Time Capsule initially (which I did through the iMac first), you'll need to enter them separately with the XP machines. You could also try resetting Time Capsule. Seems to work for others.

  • Does the user have to be the owner of CWM2 objects to access them via OLAP API?

    Hi,
What are required for RDBMS users to use OLAP API? Regarding page 6-9 of Oracle9i OLAP User's Guide 9.2.0.1, following access rights are required.
    CONNECT role
    QUERY REWRITE system privilege
SELECT privilegs on the database objects containing the data to be analyzed
So, I created a new user TEST1 and granted all the priviges above. Then I tried to create a new crosstab using New Crosstab Wizard in JDev903_pre(OLAPConnecton is using TEST1). When I choose a measure that is created in CWM1, I could create a crosstab without problem. But when I tried to create a crosstab from a measure that is created in CWM2 by OLAPSYS user, I recieved the following error.
BIB-9509 Oracle OLAP did not create cusor.
    oracle.express.ExpressServerExceptionError class:OLAPI
    Server error descriptions:
DPR: Unable to create server cursor, Generic at TxsOqDefinitionManager::createCursorManager
    OES: ORA, Generic at TxsRdbSelectStatement:execute()
The curious thing is that I can create a crosstab from the same measure if I use another connection that uses OLAPSYS. Does the user that connects to CWM2 using OLAP API have to be the owner of those CWM2 objects?
    Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Seiji

The user does not have to be the owner of the cwm2 objects to access them. Access to cwm2 objects is based on database security. Therefore, if the user is not the owner of the object (if user is the owner, they obviously have access to the object), then as long as the user has been granted access to the underlying physical object (i.e., the table the dimension or cube has been mapped to), the user will be able to access the object.
