Continually having to Render

I am working on a project with multiclips, 5 camera shoot, stereo audio. All the clips in the multiclip/sequence (and the entire project for that matter) are of the same frame size (1920x1080), all same video rate (29.97). All clips are Apple ProRes 422. Quicktime Video in Sequence Settings is set to that too.
Everything I thought to check looks like it's all set correctly, and every clip is the same. But when I hit play, it starts to stutter after a few seconds. I realized that the whole timeline needs Rendering (green line across the top). After I Render, if I choose a different angle from the multiclip, it also needs to render, and then if I go back to the clip I just finished rendering - it needs to be Rendered again!
Can someone please help me figure out what this issue is. I've tried several things to try to get it straight, but am at a loss here.
Thanks in advance.

Apple Pro Res 422 HQ is a 22MBp/s format so you have to times that by five which equates to 110MBp/s that your drive needs to supply to your editing system.
The bright Green on your timeline is FCP's way of telling you that 'I may drop frames trying to do this but I'll give it my best shot' rather than the orange ' you can try and play me but I'm warning you I ain't happy about doing all of this without rendering'.
I doubt a two x drive internal RAID will do it if you don't have a RAID card installed in the computer (would have to be a Mac Pro)
A good tool is AJA's system test tool that comes with their KONA software and hardware. You can set this to do a diskwhack test on your hardrives and see what speeds you'll get off of them.
You can download the KONA software for free without the hardware but just bear in mind it'll install all the easy setups for your FCP system as well.

  • Can I edit between Premiere Pro & After Effects without having to Render??

Im trying to edit these videos my method was look through the long videos and select clips I want and export them so I could work on AE..
The thing is that the videos loose a lot of quality when I render them on export.
Yes I know I could use After Effects and cut the clips in there but the problem is that it doesnt really cut the clip it just shadows out the rest of the video.
Light Blue: Section I want Shadow Blue: Rest of video
This is bothering me when I try to use time remapping..
or is there any way to actually chop it off??? so that there wont be no shadow..
or is there any way to work between them withouth having to render..

The thing is that the videos loose a lot of quality when I render them on export.
Then you are using wrong settings, plain and simple.
This is bothering me when I try to use time remapping..
How so? Nothing stops you from adding additional keyframes at the trim marks, pre-compose the layer or whatever.

  • HDV Always having to render?

Hello, I--after over two years--got a project we shot on a difficult JVC HDV U100 format digitized and onto a hard drive. I am very excited to get this project underway. My problem: when I drag the footage onto the time line the red line appears that prompts me to render. This is with no effects and nothing done to the footage. Will I have to render always? I hope not. Is there any way I can edit it in a lower format then bump it up to the HDV? I do not have the capibilities to re import, as the process to import required $500 of renting the camera for a few days. Let me know if I can start editing without having to render every bit of footage when I drag it into the time line.
    thanks,
    Johnny

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

  • Is it possible to avoid having to RENDER clips?

New to FCE - still working my way through -
But - My question is - I have a small flip - making videos for the web page only- I find that this camera serves my purpose well.
Do I have to render every clip after I bring it in to the time line? When watching the tutorials it appears this is not necessary for certain types of vide files.
Since I am not willing to upgrade my camera - is this something I must deal with? Or is their a trick in the way one can import/export files where I can avoid having to render.
I just want to make sure I am not overlooking a simple setting during set up - etc....
    Thanks
    gh

You need to get your media into a format with with which FCE works natively before you bring it into the program.
Depending on what format the camera shoots, you can probably use a free utility called MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/) to convert.

  • Editing 16:9 anamorphic dv pal without having to render

    hi
i have some quicktime files which i believe to be dv pal 16:9 anamorphic.
    quicktime info window says this:
    DV, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), Millions
i would like to edit this footage natively in final cut (ie. not having to render stuff)
if i drop a file onto the final cut timeline it asks me if i would like to set the sequence settings appropriately. if i say yes then it places the video on the timeline with a red bar indicating i need to render.
if i set the sequence settings how i think they should be (dv pal anamorphic etc) than i can place video on the timeline without it asking me to render green bars) BUT in this case the video does not look correct. the frame looks cropped.

Your settings are so messed up its not funny, as is your terminology. You keep mentioning cropping whereas it sounds like there is no cropping going on at all, letterboxing yes, but cropping no.
I'm sorry if my terminology is messed up.
If I watch the footage in quicktime everything is ok. If I refer to the picture not looking correct, i mean that the footage in the final cut canvas window does not look the same as when viewed in quicktime. By cropped I mean that parts of the picture are missing, so if i looked at a picture of a man standing in quicktime and i could see his feet, i would not be able to see his feet in the final cut canvas. This could be in addition to the aspect ratio looking wrong (fat or skinny people). As far as I'm concerned, the aspect ratio being wrong or right can be entirely separated from whether or not the picture has been cropped.
That your clips are apparently upper field DV suggests that the person who supplied them to you did not have a clue.
Yes I would tend to agree. However, they did leave me a nice little note explaining this.
That your clips when displayed Anamorphic 16:9 are "too fat" suggests that they are not 16:9 at all but in fact they are normal 4:3. (Which again suggests that the person who supplied them to you did not have a clue.)
If i look at the pictures in quicktime they look correct. ie. people do not look too fat or thin, a square is square etc. if i take the quicktime window width and divide it by the window height, the ratio is the same as dividing 16 by 9, hence me thinking that the pictures are 16:9.
None of this helps you in the muddle you're in though. Drop me an email off list and/or drop me one of your source clips in my iDisk public folder (member name: andymees) and I'll see if I can help you figure this out.

  • Continually having to Re-Render

    Hello All,
My current saga/battle with rendering continues. For the first time (on a project basis), I am having to re-render each time I move away from my project and return. For example, I am working on a piece in FCP. I render the video and audio, I go to STP to work on a composite narrative piece. When I return to FCP (I didn't import anything yet), it needs to be re-rendered. I have not encountered the need to do this so frequently on other projects. Any idea what's going on?
    Thanks.
    DG

    David S.
I think you hit it. I went back and looked at all of the files I am using in my piece. The material coming from my camera was matched well. However, I discovered that the soundtrack I'm using was m4a format. I think this caused a lot of rendering struggles. I've switched/converted to aiff.
    Thanks.

  • Having to render every single little change I make!

I know this has been asked before and discussed before and I've gone over every instruction that people have posted but I still have the problem of having to re render every single little change I make. If I shorten a clip I have to re render it if I move it a little to the left I have to re render it. Even making changes to one clip can then mean I have to re render all the other clips that I haven't even modified. I've done everything people suggest to do. I convert my footage to a format that FCE likes and will work with yet I still have to keep re rendering every little thing I do which makes the simple task of editing a music video together take forever.
Can anyone please suggest anything that I may be missing as this is getting really frustrating!!??

Cool, as soon as I can get back in front of my Mac I'll get that posted up for you. In the mean time I just thought I would post up the process I've been following and maybe you'll spot something that I'm doing wrong.
Firstly the Camcorder I'm using films in 720p HD in mpeg4 H.264 format in widescreen/16:9. Now I read on another forum that the H.264 is no good for editing in FCE so I would need to convert to something compatible. I was pointed to a program called "Mpeg Streamclip" which is what I now use to convert to an acceptable format. If you are familair with the program the process I follow is to Open up the clip I want to convert and select the option "Export To QuickTime" It then gives me the options available for this. Firstly I choose DV-PAL from the dropdown list and then slide the quality slider up to MAX. The DV-PAL option defaults at 4:3 so in another dropdown menu I change that to 16:9 to preserve my widescreen. I then select "Make Movie" and it creates a copy in .mov format and DV-PAL. I have FCE setup to work with DV-PAL (all formats) as previously mentioned and from the instructions I've followed I should now be able to work with clips un hindered by having to re render.
Now I am doing green screen footage and using the Chroma Key filter which I understand does need to be rendered but from what I have read I should only have to render once and from then on I should be ok without having to re render.
I am very new to video editing and am a music engineer mainly but in the interest of being an independant artist I'm trying to do as much by myself as I can.
Thanks for any help you can give, it will be much appreciated.

  • Burn to DVD without having to render?

In need of some help! I've been having the worst problems rendering - it's just taking TOO long and I'm leaving Friday to Prague and absolutely must have this film on DVD before I leave. Is there ANYWAY to burn the project to a DVD without the time consuming render process? Anyway that I can get the film right on DVD from the Timeline? please help me!!!

The quickest way I know is to ditch your render files, Export to QT movie, then whack that onto DVD using DVD SP and let it go!
But why is everything taking too long?
What format are you working in?
Do your Timeline and Clip settings match-up?
What processing power do you have?
    How much free HD space?
Are your Media Files on your System Drive?
Give full and accurate information and you'll get educated answers - we're not mind readers.

  • How to avoid having to render...?

I am fairly new to editing and all it involves, so apologies if some of this is very obvious/basic stuff.
I often have to edit footage provided to me by other people, because of this i cannot control what cameras the footage is shot on or what format the files are delivered to me on. The files are generally wmv, MTS, or MP4 files. The bain of my life at the moment is having to constantly render files in Final Cut Express.
What do i need to do to avoid rendering? What settings do i need to amend? i am fairly comfortable with video converters, but i am not sure what settings need to be the same in FCE and the video clip so that they work harmoniously and without the need for editing...?
In am based in the UK
    Thank you very much!

You'll find most of the basic information you need to know in the user's manual.  Among that information is the fact that FCE works natively (no rendering) with only two codecs: DV and AIC.  All other codecs need to be converted to one of those two PRIOR to importing into FCE.
You may want to look into purchasing FCP X (just released) which works natively with many, many more codecs.

  • Why always having to render?

Hi. Using a JVC GZ-HD7 with FCE4 in full High Definition. I find I have to render after every edit before I can play it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong - or is this just how it is? FCE EasySetup config is Apple Intermediate Codec at1080i50 at 25fps and ItemProperties are VidRate 25fps FrameSize 1920x1080 Compressor Apple Intermediate Codec DataRate 8.7MB/sec PixelAspect Square FieldDominance None Alpha None Composite Normal. Thanks. Kev

Theoretically 1920 is better, but you have to see what the chip aspect ratio is in the camera. If it's 1920 then you'll get no loss by compressing to 1440, though the full 1920 will be marginally better. if the chip is 1440, you will actually get reduced quality because the image is being scaled up to 1920.
If you keep rendering you're losing any benefit of 1920 because the image is being scaled down to the 1440 format that would have been done in the camera when you shoot with it.

  • Having to render everything

I'm having to spend a lot of time waiting for every clip dragged to the timeline to be rendered before it can be viewed. Anyone else have the same issue? It could be the file format, though it's QT PAL 768x576 25 frames. Converted from a Canon camcorder and I wonder if this might be the root of the problem, though so far everything I've used has produced the same result. My brand new MacBookPro is performing like an old and very stressed out PowerMac. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm having to spend a lot of time waiting for every clip dragged to the timeline to be rendered before it can be viewed. Anyone else have the same issue?
    Lots of users do.
It's because, as you suspect, there is a mis-match of clips and Sequence settings.
Right click a Sequence and select Item Properties to find the Sequence settings, the same can be done for a clip.
    QT PAL 768x576 25 frames
Something wrong here, should be 720x576

  • Review project without having to render

Good day everyone...  I am a rookie still in diapers when it comes to After Effects...  I am teaching myself from online videos on how to use it, and one thing I see on pretty much every tutorial is that a project is built, all effects are added and they are able to play it back to view how their project is going. Again I am new so I do not know the terminology, but when I create my project and hit the space bar on the timeline, it takes forever to play it once as if it is being rendered and then I can play normally. So the moment I make a little change, I have to do this procedure all over.  Is this the normal process or is there a faster way to playback ones project to see how it is flowing? Any help or info appreciated.  Thanks

Don't use the spacebar. Use RAM preview. See "Preview video and audio".
But, yes, to perview your composition, After Effects does have to render the frames. If you make a change, it has to render the frames again. There are a lot of tips for speeding things up here: "Improve performance"
If you're new to After Effects, I strongly recommend that you start here: "Getting started with After Effects". It really helps if you start with these basics, if only because it gives you the terminology to ask questions here.

  • Continually having to repair permissions

Until a couple of months ago, I ran 10.6 on my MacBook Pro (late '09). As time went by, I had to go to Disk Utility and repair permissions more and more often, after running into sluggish performance, freezes or the system simply not restoring after it gone into hibernation. After awhile, I was having to do it at least bi-weekly. Finally I upgraded to 10.9 (10.9.3 at the moment), hoping it might fix whatever is ailing my system, but now I'm having to repair permissions at least weekly, including just now. I'm at a point where I'm thinking maybe I should rebuild my system, but of course, I'd like to avoid that. I've done some searching through the communities but haven't seen anything exactly like this situation. I'm wondering if anyone may have ideas, based on their experience, what may cause this kind of situation?
Thanks in advance for any guidance/ideas ...

  • Editing DVCPro HD Without Having to Render

    Hey All,
I'm editing a project I shot with the Panasonic HVX-200 in 720 24p...I've imported the footage successfully onto FCP 5, but I have to render the footage every time I place it into my sequence.
Is there a way around this? This is my first time editing HD, so it might be a problem with my settings, but I think I've done that correctly...
Any help/advice would be much appreciated...

Click on your timeline and press APPLE-0 (zero) and see what your presets are. Typically if you create a new project, THEN choose an Easy Setup, the Sequence 1 will have the old settings. Creating a new sequence after you choose an easy setup is a good trick.
Plus...if your footage is 720p24 but 24 over 60 (59.94 fps) then choosing a 720p24 easy setup won't work for you, as it is 23.98. Look at your clips settings.
